BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced following roster moves:

 

Returned left-handed pitcher Chris Sale from his injury rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester and reinstated him from the 60-day injured list.

Reinstated catcher Christian Vázquez from the bereavement list.

Optioned right-handed pitcher Yacksel Rios to Worcester following last night’s game.

Optioned catcher Connor Wong to Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

 

Sale, 32, will start today’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, his first major league outing since August 13, 2019. Since joining the Red Sox in 2017, the left-hander is 35-23 with a 3.08 ERA (178 ER/519.2 IP) in 84 starts. Among American League pitchers with at least 1,000 innings pitched since the start of 2012, Sale ranks first in ERA (3.05), WHIP (1.03), strikeouts per 9.0 innings (11.11), strikeouts-to-walk ratio (5.63), opponent batting average (.219), and opponent OPS (.626). The seven-time All-Star and 2018 World Series champion owns the best strikeouts-to-walk ratio (5.37) among pitchers with at least 1,000 innings pitched in the Live Ball Era.

 

Vázquez, 30, has appeared in 100 games with the Red Sox this season, making 88 starts at catcher and three at designated hitter. He has hit .254 (87-for-342) with a .639 OPS, 16 doubles, four home runs, 37 RBI, and 36 runs scored. Vázquez has thrown out 12 runners attempting to steal against him, the most in the American League.

 

Rios, 28, has made 20 relief appearances for the Red Sox this season, posting a 3.70 ERA (10 ER/24.1 IP) with a 1.11 WHIP. The right-hander last pitched Thursday against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing two runs in 2.0 innings.

 

Wong, 25, made his major league debut this season and has appeared in six games with Boston, going 4-for-13 (.308) and throwing out the only runner who attempted to steal against him. In 27 games with Worcester this season, he has hit .183 (19-for-104) with two home runs, making 25 starts at catcher, one at second base, and one at designated hitter.

A’s place Elvis Andrus on paternity list; recall Vimael Machín from Triple-A Las Vegas

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland placed shortstop Elvis Andrus on the Paternity List and recalled infielder Vimael Machín from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

 

Machín, who returns for his third stint with the A’s this season, last played with the Club on June 26 against San Francisco. In 10 games with Oakland this year, he is hitting .048 with one RBI. In 65 games with Las Vegas, however, he is hitting .304 with an .887 OPS, including nine home runs and 48 RBI.

 

For the year, Andrus is hitting .231 with three home runs, 28 RBI, 10 stolen bases, and a .696 OPS and is fourth among Major League shortstops with 110 games played. He also leads all active players with 315 career stolen bases.

Giants agree to two-year contract extension with Brandon Crawford

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The Giants and shortstop Brandon Crawford have agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension that will keep Crawford in a Giants uniform through the 2023 season. The two-year extension is worth $32 million with a base salary of $16 million in 2022 and 2023.

 

Crawford, 34, is in the midst of one of the best seasons of his career in 2021, currently hitting .296 with 21 doubles, one triple, 19 home runs, 69 RBI and a .904 OPS. He was named an All-Star for the third time in his career (also 2015 and 2018) earlier this year and is on pace to challenge his career-best numbers for homers, RBI and OPS in a single-season. Among qualified shortstops this year, Crawford’s .904 OPS is second-best in the Majors while his 69 RBI are the second-most and his 19 home runs are tied for the fifth-most.

 

Overall, Crawford ranks among the National League leaders in batting average (.296, 9th), slugging percentage (.540, 6th), OPS (.904, 9th) and RBI (69, T-10th).

 

The Bay Area native became the franchise’s all-time leader in games played at shortstop earlier this season, surpassing Hall of Famer Travis Jackson on June 8 at Texas when he started the game for San Francisco. During his 11 seasons in the orange and black he’s been a part of two World Series championship clubs (2012, 2014), won three Gold Glove awards (2015-2017) and also garnered a Silver Slugger award (2015).

 

In San Francisco history (1958-present), Crawford currently ranks in the club record books in games played (1,400, 5th), triples (39, T-5th), doubles (255, 5th), hits (1,196, 8th), RBI (633, 9th), walks (449, 12th) and home runs (125, 17th).

Schwarber, 28, was acquired by the Red Sox on July 29 from the Washington Nationals. Before he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain on July 3, he played in 72 games with the Nationals and hit .253 (67-for-265) with 25 home runs and a .910 OPS.

 

Verdugo, 25, is batting .278 (110-for-395) with 11 home runs and 41 RBI in 105 games for Boston this season, making 61 starts in left field, 26 in center field, and 12 in right field. In his last 17 games, he is batting .328 (20-for-61) with six doubles and two home runs.

 

Gonzalez, 32, has appeared in 77 games with the Red Sox this season, making 30 starts at second base, 12 at first base, nine at shortstop, eight in left field, six at third base, and two in right field. He has batted .202 (49-for-242) with two home runs and a .567 OPS.

 

Houck, 25, started last night’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing four runs (three earned) in 5.0 innings with eight strikeouts and zero walks. In eight major league outings (six starts) this season, he has posted a 2.93 ERA (10 ER/30.2 IP) with 44 strikeouts and seven walks.

LHP WADE LEBLANC PLACED ON 10-DAY INJURED LIST WITH LEFT ELBOW INJURY

 

KANSAS CITY, Mo.,  – The St. Louis Cardinals announced this afternoon that they have placed left-handed pitcher Wade LeBlanc (left elbow) on the 10-day Injured List, and activated right-handed pitcher Jack Flaherty (left oblique strain) from the 60-day Injured List.

 

LeBlanc, 37, who celebrated his birthday last Saturday, exited Thursday afternoon’s game in Pittsburgh after pitching two innings. The southpaw has made eight starts and 12 appearances all-together for the Cardinals in 2021, posting an 0-2 record with a 3.61 ERA compiling 42.1 innings.

 

Flaherty, 25, is returning off the 60-day Injured List with a left oblique strain suffered during a start at Los Angeles on May 31. The Cardinals hurler was 8-1 with a 2.90 ERA in 11 starts when he went on the Injured List and was leading all National League pitchers in wins at the time.

 

Since July 27, Flaherty has made three rehab starts between Memphis (AAA) and Springfield (AA) and increased his pitch count to 75 in his most recent start at Springfield on August 6 vs. Tulsa.

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Friday’s homestand opener against the Oakland Athletics:

 

  • Right-handed pitcher Dane Dunning activated from 10-day Injured List.

 

  • Catcher Yohel Pozo (#37) contract selected from Round Rock (AAA).

 

  • Left-handed pitcher Wes Benjamin optioned to Round Rock (AAA).

 

  • Infielder/designated hitter Curtis Terry optioned to Round Rock (AAA).

 

  • Right-handed pitcher Jimmy Herget designated for assignment.

 

Dunning is the scheduled starter for tonight’s game against Oakland. He was placed on the 10-day Injured List on August 4, retroactive to August 3, with right ankle impingement. Dunning has gone 5-7 with a 4.07 ERA (43 ER/95.0 IP) over 20 games/starts for the Rangers this season, ranking among rotation leaders in wins (T2nd, 5) and starts (3rd, 20). He has gone 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA (9 ER/30.0 IP) over his last 6 starts for Texas.

 

The 24-year-old Pozo (pronounced YOH-hehl poh-zoh) is in tonight’s starting lineup as the designated hitter, batting eighth in what will be his Major League debut. The right-handed batter has produced a slash line of .337/.350/.608/.958 (92-273) with 19 home runs, 13 doubles, 2 triples, and 63 RBI over 66 games with the Express in his first Triple-A action. The Venezuela native ranks among Triple-A West leaders in RBI (2nd, 63), total bases (2nd, 166), hits (3rd, 92), batting average (4th, .337), home runs (5th, 19), slugging percentage (6th, .608), and OPS (10th, .958). Over his last 27 games beginning July 10, Pozo has slashed .407/.419/.735/1.153 (46-113) with 10 home runs and 28 RBI, hitting safely in 22 of those 27 contests.

 

Originally signed by Texas as a non-drafted free agent on August 17, 2013, he was re-acquired by Texas in the Triple-A phase of the Rule 5 Draft on December 10, 2020. He had signed as a free agent with the San Diego Padres on November 13, 2020.  Pozo has spent his entire professional career in the Texas organization, batting .286 with a .750 OPS over seven seasons while playing primarily at catcher. He has also seen significant action at first base.

 

Benjamin made just one appearance for the Rangers after being recalled on August 8. He has gone 0-2 with a 7.53 ERA over 8 games/one start spanning five stints in the Majors in 2021: Opening Day-April 16, May 14, May 25-June 3, June 23-July 2, August 8-12.

 

Terry batted .089 with no home runs and one RBI over 13 games in his first Major League action after having his contract selected from Round Rock on July 23.

 

Herget was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA over 4 relief appearances with Texas from August 2-7. He has spent the balance of the season with the Express, going 2-2 with a 2.63 ERA over 27 relief outings. The Rangers have seven days to trade, release, or outright Herget to the minor leagues.

 

Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the club’s Major League roster, along with eight players on the 60-day Injured List.

DYERSVILLE, Iowa – Following tonight’s “Field of Dreams” Game vs. the New York Yankees, the Chicago White Sox returned infielder Danny Mendick to Class AAA Charlotte.

 

Mendick served as the 27th player for tonight’s game and went 0-1 as a pinch hitter.

LAFC Injury Update on ERIK DUEÑAS

The Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) announced today that midfielder Erik Dueñas suffered a tear of his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL) against Phoenix Rising on Aug. 7, 2021 while on loan with the Las Vegas Lights of the USL. Dueñas will require surgery will miss the remainder of the MLS season.

 

Prior to his injury, Dueñas,16, had appeared in six matches on loan with Las Vegas, playing 224 minutes. Sidelined by an ankle injury earlier in the season, Dueñas saw his first action of the season in a 2-1 Vegas win over the Oakland Roots on July 10.

 

A product of LAFC’s youth academy and one of the Club’s first Homegrown Players,  Dueñas made his professional debut for the Black & Gold on Oct. 14, 2020, becoming the youngest player in LAFC history and the third-youngest player in MLS history when he took the field at 15 years, 362 days old. Dueñas appeared in two MLS games in 2020.

Following its victory over Orlando City SC last night, Liga MX side Santos Laguna has advanced to the 2021 Leagues Cup semifinal stage where it will face Sounders FC; Rave Green to play host at Lumen Field on September 14 in a bid to reach the Leagues Cup Final, with tickets on sale starting today

 

SEATTLE, WASH. – Having secured its place in the 2021 Leagues Cup semifinals with a dominant 3-0 victory over Tigres UANL on Tuesday night, Sounders FC today announced that the club is hosting Liga MX side Santos Laguna in the tournament’s penultimate round, scheduled for Tuesday, September 14 at Lumen Field (7:00 p.m. PT / ESPN2, TUDN, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).

 

Following Santos’ 1-0 defeat of Orlando City SC last night, the Rave Green stand as the lone MLS club remaining in Leagues Cup play.

 

Tickets for the semifinal round go on sale to the public starting today, Friday, August 13, at 2:00 p.m. PT, with a presale window for Season Ticket Members that began at 9:00 a.m. PT. Tickets are available exclusively through Ticketmaster.

 

Additionally, fans are reminded that, as announced on Tuesday evening, as a result of advancing to the Leagues Cup semifinal, Sounders FC’s MLS regular-season match vs. Vancouver Whitecaps FC – previously set for September 15 at Lumen Field – has been rescheduled to October 9 at 6:00 p.m. PT.

 

The Rave Green are competing in Leagues Cup – the official annual single-elimination tournament featuring clubs from MLS and Liga MX, Mexico’s topflight league – for the first time, with a 5-8-2 all-time record against Liga MX clubs, with all fixtures prior to Tuesday’s match coming in Concacaf Champions League play.
