Canucks Re-Sign Defenceman Olli Juolevi to a one-year contract

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has re-signed defenceman Olli Juolevi to a one-year contract at a value of $750,000.

 

“Last season was an important step in Olli’s development as an everyday NHL defenceman,” said Benning. “We’re glad to have him signed and look forward to his game progressing further next season.”

 

Juolevi, 23, appeared in 23 games during his debut NHL season in 2020.21, recording three points (2-1-3) and 24 shots. He tallied his first career NHL goal in his seventh career game on Jan. 25, 2021, vs Ottawa and finished the season fourth on the team in blocked shots per 60 minutes (5.92).

 

Prior to the 2020.21 season, Juolevi made his NHL playoff debut in Vancouver’s series-clinching game during the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers vs Minnesota. Juolevi also spent two seasons with Vancouver’s AHL affiliate Utica Comets (2018.19, 2019.20), collecting 38 points (3-35-38) and 26 penalty minutes in 63 games.

 

The Helsinki, Finland, native represented Finland at the IIHF World Junior Championships on three occasions (2016-2018), capturing gold in 2016. He was named to the tournament All-Star Team in 2016 with nine points (0-9-9) in seven games, and captained Finland at the World Juniors the next year (2017).

 

The 6’2″, 182-pound defenceman was originally drafted by Vancouver in the first round, fifth overall in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft.

Canucks Re-Sign Guillaume Brisebois to a one-year, two-way contract

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has re-signed defenceman Guillaume Brisebois to a one-year, two-way contract.

 

Brisebois, 24, split the 2020.21 season between the Vancouver Canucks (1 GP), the Utica Comets (0-1-1, 5 GP) and was briefly loaned to the Laval Rocket where he collected a goal and an assist (1-1-2) in 9 games played.

 

The 6’2″, 175-pound defenceman has appeared in 179 career AHL games recording 47 points (11-36-47) and 77 penalty minutes. He made his NHL debut in 2018.19 and has appeared in nine career NHL games, all with Vancouver.

 

On the international stage, Brisebois won a bronze medal with team Canada at the 2015 IIHF World U18 Championship.

 

The Longueuil, QC, native was originally selected by the Vancouver Canucks in the third round, 66th overall, in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Calgary, AB – The Calgary Flames announce today that they have signed defenseman Oliver Kylington to a one year, two-way contract.

 

Kylington, a native of Stockholm, Sweden is entering his 7th season in the Flames organization. He was originally selected by Calgary in the second round (60th overall) in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. The 6’0″, 185 lbs rearguard has played 95 career NHL games recording five goals and 11 assists for 16 points.

Forward was named Calder Cup Playoff MVP with Charlotte in 2019

 

RALEIGH, N.C. – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has signed forward Andrew Poturalski to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Poturalski $750,000 at the NHL level and $200,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level with a $250,000 guarantee.

 

“Andrew is a playmaking forward who has put up excellent numbers at the AHL level,” said Waddell. “He previously spent four years in our organization, and we’re excited to bring back a player we’re very familiar with.”

 

Poturalski, 27, registered 43 points (9g, 34a) in 44 AHL games with San Diego last season, leading all AHL skaters in assists and points. The 5’10”, 183-pound forward has tallied 226 points (77g, 149a) in 299 career AHL games with Charlotte and San Diego. Poturalski played four seasons with the Checkers from 2016-19 and won the Jack A. Butterfield Trophy as the MVP of the Calder Cup Playoffs in 2019. He has skated in two career NHL games, both with Carolina, and made his NHL debut at Minnesota on April 4, 2017. Poturalski played two seasons of NCAA hockey at New Hampshire from 2014-16, posting 81 points (36g, 45a) in 77 games. The Williamsville, N.Y., native was originally signed by the Hurricanes as a free agent on March 8, 2016.

Defenseman made his NHL playoff debut with the Hurricanes last season

 

RALEIGH, N.C. – Don Waddell, President and General Manager of the National Hockey League’s Carolina Hurricanes, today announced that the team has re-signed defenseman Maxime Lajoie to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay Lajoie $750,000 at the NHL level and $75,000 at the American Hockey League (AHL) level with a $100,000 guarantee.

 

“Maxime played well in Chicago last season and was able to step into our lineup during the playoffs,” said Waddell. “We’re excited to bring back a young defenseman with NHL experience.”

 

Lajoie, 23, skated in two games with Carolina during the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs, making his NHL postseason debut in Game 3 of the Central Division First Round at Nashville on May 21. The 6’1,” 196-pound defenseman tallied 21 points (6g, 15a) in 27 AHL games with Chicago during the regular season, ranking fourth in points and tied for fourth in goals among AHL defensemen. Lajoie has played 62 career NHL regular season games, all with Ottawa, earning 15 points (7g, 8a). He has also registered 54 points (11g, 43a) in 134 career AHL games with Belleville and Chicago. Prior to turning professional, the Quebec City, Que., native spent parts of four seasons in the Western Hockey League with Swift Current from 2014-17, posting 119 points (22g, 97a) and serving as an alternate captain during his final two seasons with the Broncos. Selected by Ottawa in the fifth round, 133rd overall, of the 2016 NHL Draft, Lajoie was acquired by the Hurricanes from the Senators in exchange for Clark Bishop on Jan. 12, 2021.

Minnesota Wild signs Forward Will Bitten to a One-Year, Two-Way Contract

SAINT PAUL, Minn. – Minnesota Wild General Manager Bill Guerin today announced the National Hockey League (NHL) club has signed forward Will Bitten to a one-year, two-way contract ($840,000/$75,000).

 

Bitten, 23 (7/10/98), collected 19 points (7-12=19) in 31 games with the Iowa Wild of the American Hockey League (AHL) during the 2020-21 season. The 5-foot-10, 167-pound native of Ottawa, Ontario, set a career-high four-game point streak (3-3=6) from April 30-May 9. He tied his career-best three-game goal streak (3g) from April 30-May 7 and tied his career-high three points April 3 at Texas. Four of his seven goals were the first goals of the game which led Iowa and ranked T-3rd in the AHL. The right-shot winger ranked third on the Wild in shots (77) and T-5th in goals, assists and points. He owns 69 points (28-41=69), three power-play goals (PPG), two game-winning goals (GWG), 61 penalty minutes (PIM) and 257 shots on goal in 145 career AHL games with Iowa (2018-21). He has five assists and 14 shots in 11 AHL playoff contests (2019).

 

Bitten collected 217 points (88-129=217), 122 PIM, 20 PPG, six GWG and three shorthanded goals in 257 career games with Plymouth, Flint and Hamilton of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in four seasons (2014-18) and won the OHL Championship in 2018 with the Bulldogs. He has represented Canada at the 2016 IIHF Under-18 World Championship and won gold with Canada at the 2016 Hlinka Memorial Tournament.

 

Bitten was acquired by Minnesota on Oct. 3, 2018 from Montreal in exchange for Gustav Olofsson. He was drafted by the Canadiens in the third round (70th overall) of the 2016 NHL Draft.

Dodgers recall Zach McKinstry

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers recalled infielder/outfielder Zach McKinstry and placed left-handed pitcher Julio Urías on the injured list with a left calf contusion.

 

McKinstry, 26, returns for his second stint with the team after appearing in 58 games for the Dodgers this season. On the season, he is batting .217 with seven homers and 29 RBI. He has appeared in 10 games for Triple-Oklahoma City, batting .212 with one homer and three RBI. In six minor league seasons in the Dodgers organization, he has hit a combined .268 (338-for-1259) with 31 homers and 152 RBI across five different levels. He was originally drafted by the Dodgers in the 33rd round of Central Michigan University in the 2016 First Year Player Draft.

 

Urías, 25, made the start last night, tossing 5.0 innings of scoreless baseball. The lefty is tied for the Major League lead in wins with 13 and is 13-3 with a 3.29 ERA (51 ER/139.2 IP) and 149 strikeouts in 24 starts this season. In parts of six seasons with the Dodgers, he is combined 25-10 with a 3.23 ERA (136 ER/378.2 IP) and 381 strikeouts. He was originally signed by the Dodgers on August 17, 2012 as an international free agent out of Culiacan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Ralph Garza Jr. recalled from Triple-A St. Paul

 

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed right-handed pitcher Michael Pineda on the 10-day Injured List with a left mild oblique strain.

 

Pineda, who left last night’s game in the third inning after experiencing left side tightness, has made 17 starts for the Twins this season, going 4-8 with a 4.13 ERA (85.0 IP, 39 ER), 17 walks, 73 strikeouts, a .264 opponent batting average (88-for-333) and a 1.24 WHIP.

 

To replace Pineda on the 26-man roster, the Twins have recalled right-handed pitcher Ralph Garza Jr. from Triple-A St. Paul. Garza Jr., who was claimed off waivers from the Houston Astros on August 4, has appeared in three games for the Saints, allowing three runs on three hits in 3.2 innings pitched, with two walks and five strikeouts. The 27-year-old made his major league debut on May 29 and appeared in nine games for the Astros prior to joining the Twins, going 1-2 with a 4.09 ERA (11.0 IP, 5 ER), seven walks, 14 strikeouts, a .262 opponent batting average (11-for-42) and a 1.64 WHIP.

Cubs place RHP Adbert Alzolay on 10-day injured list, recall RHP Trevor Megill from Triple-A Iowa

MIAMI – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Adbert Alzolay on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain and recalled right-handed pitcher Trevor Megill from Triple-A Iowa.

 

Megill, 27, is in his fifth stint with the club this season, having made 12 relief appearances. He has allowed 13 runs in 8.2 innings pitched, along with six walks compared to eight strikeouts. This season with Iowa, Megill has a 5.14 ERA (8 ER/14.0 IP) with one save in 12 relief outings, walking eight and striking out 20 batters.

 

The six-foot eight-inch Megill was selected by the Cubs in the major league portion of the 2019 Rule 5 draft from San Diego and last season spent time at the South Bend Alternate Site. He reached the Triple-A level for the first time in 2019, appearing in 32 games for El Paso and pitching to a 4.47 ERA (25 ER/50.1 IP).

 

Originally selected by the Padres in the seventh round of the 2015 draft out of Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, Megill owns an 11-3 record with 11 saves and a 3.53 ERA (67 ER/171.0 IP) in 114 career minor league games, all in relief.

 

Alzolay, 26, is 4-13 with a 5.16 ERA (61 ER/106.1 IP) in 21 starts for Chicago this season. He has struck out 107 batters and walked 32 with a 1.20 WHIP.
