Emi Ochoa Called to Mexico U-18 National Team

Mexico U-18s to play two friendlies against Ireland

SAN JOSE, Calif. – San Jose Earthquakes goalkeeper Emi Ochoa has been called to the Mexico U-18 National Team for a training camp in Cork, Ireland from August 31 to September 9. The training camp will include two friendlies vs. the Ireland U-18 National Team on September 5 and September 7.

Ochoa, 16, signed a Homegrown Player contract with the Quakes ahead of the 2020 season, becoming the second-youngest player to sign a professional contract in Major League Soccer history at 14 years and 191 days.

Ochoa represented the United States at the U-14 and U-15 levels before representing Mexico at the U-16 level earlier this year. He has yet to make his professional debut for San Jose.

Crystal Bradford Injury Update

ATLANTA – Dream guard Crystal Bradford sustained a Jones fracture in her right foot in the third quarter of Atlanta’s game against the Chicago Sky on August 24. Bradford underwent a successful surgical repair this morning at Emory Orthopaedic and Spine Center in Atlanta.

 

While Bradford is expected to make a full recovery, she will miss the remainder of the 2021 Dream season.

 

In her breakout WNBA season, Bradford played 24 games with nine starts, averaging 8.8 points, 3.8 rebounds 1.5 assists and 1.6 steals per game – nearly double her averages in each category from her 2015 season.

BOSTON, MA – Prior to tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox made the following roster moves:

 

Selected right-handed pitcher Brad Peacock to the active major league roster. He will wear number 44.

Reinstated outfielder Hunter Renfroe from the Bereavement/Family Medical Emergency List.

Selected left-handed pitcher Stephen Gonsalves to the active major league roster from Triple-A Worcester. He will wear number 78.

Placed left-handed pitcher Josh Taylor and right-handed pitcher Hirokazu Sawamura on the COVID-19 Related Injured List.

Returned right-handed pitcher Raynel Espinal to the Worcester roster following last night’s game against the Rays.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

 

Peacock, 33, was acquired yesterday from the Cleveland Indians. In 181 career major league appearances (83 starts), he has gone 34-30 with three saves and a 4.01 ERA (247 ER/554.2 IP) for the Washington Nationals (2011) and Houston Astros (2013-20). From 2016-18, Peacock posted a 3.23 ERA (82 ER/228.2 IP), notably going 13-2 in 2017. In 11 games (10 starts) for Triple-A Columbus this season, he went 0-4 with a 7.68 ERA (29 ER/34.0 IP). A Florida native, Peacock last pitched on August 27, allowing three runs in 5.1 innings against Memphis.

 

Renfroe, 29, ranks second in the American League with 10 home runs in August. In 115 games this season, he has hit .258 (105-for-407) with 25 home runs, 77 RBI, and an .817 OPS. He leads the majors with 14 outfield assists, having made 108 starts in right field and three in center field.

 

Gonsalves, 27, has made seven major league appearances (four starts), all with the Minnesota Twins in 2018. He has spent the entire 2021 season with Worcester, going 4-4 with a 4.97 ERA (37 ER/67.0 IP) with 12.36 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (92 strikeouts) in 17 games (10 starts).

 

Taylor, 28, has appeared in a career-high 54 games this season, posting a 3.38 ERA (16 ER/42.2 IP) with 54 strikeouts. In 45 outings since April 30, the left-hander has recorded a 1.83 ERA (7 ER/34.1 IP), a 1.19 WHIP, and a .195 opponent batting average.

 

Sawamura, 33, has posted a 3.09 ERA (16 ER/46.2 IP) with 10.41 strikeouts per 9.0 innings (54 strikeouts) over 50 appearances for Boston this season, his major league debut. The right-hander ranks among American League rookies in appearances (5th) and holds (T-6th, 10).

 

Espinal, 29, made his major league debut last night, throwing 2.0 innings of relief and allowing two runs on two hits and one walk. The right-hander has made 18 appearances (16 starts) for Worcester, going 9-4 with a 3.74 ERA (38 ER/91.1 IP) and a .203 opponent batting average.

The Toronto Blue Jays have reinstated C Danny Jansen from the 10-day injured list (right hamstring strain) and he will be active for tonight’s game. To make room on the active roster, RHP Trent Thornton has been optioned to Triple-A Buffalo.

 

Additionally, LHP Brad Hand has been reinstated from the bereavement list and designated for assignment.

White Sox place Lance Lynn on 10-day injured list; recall Danny Mendick from Triple-A Charlotte

CHICAGO – Prior to tonight’s series opener vs. Pittsburgh, the Chicago White Sox placed All-Star right-handed pitcher Lance Lynn on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to August 29) with right knee inflammation and recalled infielder Danny Mendick from Class AAA Charlotte.

 

Lynn, 34, is 10-4 with a 2.59 ERA (39 ER/135.2 IP) and 152 strikeouts over 24 starts this season, his first with the White Sox. He leads the American League in ERA, opponents average (.204) and slugging percentage (.338) and ranks among the leaders in opponents OPS (2nd, .605), WHIP (4th, 1.08), strikeouts per 9.0 IP (5th, 10.08) and wins (T7th).

 

Mendick, 27, is batting .217 (33-152) with five doubles, two home runs, 20 RBI and 13 runs scored in 66 games over five stints with the White Sox in 2021.

LHP Hyeon-jong Yang returned to Triple-A Round Rock; Club signs RHP Chase Anderson to minor league contract

 

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Tuesday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies at Globe Life Field:

 

Catcher Jonah Heim activated from COVID-19 Related Injured List.

Left-handed pitcher Hyeon-jong Yang returned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Right-handed pitcher Chase Anderson signed to minor league contract and assigned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Heim is in tonight’s lineup as the starting catcher, and he is seeking his first action since the Rangers game on August 20 at Boston. He has batted .208 with 8 home runs and 23 RBI over 68 games for Texas this season, making 59 starts at catcher and 2 as the designated hitter. Heim was scratched from the starting lineup on August 21 at Boston and was on the Injured List from August 24-30. He started 16 of 20 games for the Rangers from July 30-August 20, making 14 starts at catcher and 2 as the designated hitter in that span. His 7 home runs as a catcher this season have set a Rangers rookie record for the position.

 

Yang was added to the roster as a replacement player last Tuesday, with his lone appearance on Saturday vs. Houston (2.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R) marking his first action with Texas since June 11. Yang has a 0-3 record with a 5.23 ERA over 9 games/4 starts spanning two stints for the Rangers this season (April 26-June 15 and August 24-30) in his first career Major League action after a 14-year run in the Korean Baseball Organization.

 

Anderson, 33, has spent the year in the Philadelphia organization before he was unconditionally released on Sunday. Anderson was 2-4 with a 6.75 ERA over 14 games/9 starts for the Phillies this season and also went 1-2 with a 5.71 ERA across 5 starts with Triple-A Lehigh Valley. He was designated for assignment on Thursday ahead of his release. The Wichita Falls native has a career 56-46 record and 4.20 ERA spanning 190 games/176 starts over 8 Major League seasons with Arizona (2014-15), Milwaukee (2016-19), Toronto (2020), and Philadelphia (2021).

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers claimed right-handed pitchers Jake Jewell and Ryan Meisinger from Chicago.

 

Jewell, 28, has appeared in 10 games for the Cubs this season, posing an 0-2 record with a 9.90 ERA (11 ER/10.0 IP) and 10 strikeouts. The right-hander has spent parts of three seasons in the Major Leagues with Los Angeles-AL (2018-2019) and Chicago (2021), going a combined 0-3 with a 7.75 ERA (33 ER/38.1 IP) and 34 strikeouts. In 23 games with Triple-A Iowa, he went 2-1 with four saves and 2.78 ERA with 35 strikeouts. He was originally drafted by the Los Angeles Angels in the fifth round of the 2014 First-Year Player Draft out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M.

 

Meisinger, 27, is 0-0 with a 12.27 ERA (10 ER/7.1 IP) and six strikeouts in seven games for the Cubs. The right-hander has made stops in Baltimore (2018), St. Louis (2019) and Chicago (2021) and is a combined 2-1 with a 7.26 ERA (25 ER/31.0 IP) and 30 strikeouts. In 171 minor league games, spanning six seasons, he is combined 14-13 with 23 saves in 24 chances and a 2.68 ERA (81 ER/ 272.0 IP). He was drafted by the Orioles in the 15th round of the 2015 First Year Player Draft out of Radford University.

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s placed designated hitter Mitch Moreland on the injured list retroactive to Aug. 27 with left wrist tendinitis and recalled outfielder Skye Bolt from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

 

Moreland is batting .227 with 10 home runs and 30 RBI in 81 games with the A’s. He has started 57 games at designated hitter and seven at first base this season, with 55 of his 64 starts coming against right-handed pitchers. Since being reinstated from the injured list on July 16, Moreland is hitting .203 (14-for-69) with four homers and eight RBI in 24 games.

 

Bolt joins the A’s for the third time this season. In his most recent stint with the A’s, he went 4-for-33 (.121) in 14 games from June , and he is hitting .109 in 23 games overall with Oakland this season. Bolt has a .387 average, nine home runs, 29 RBI and a .492 on-base percentage in 51 games with the Aviators. Originally selected by Oakland in the fourth round of the 2015 draft, Bolt was designated for assignment on Opening Day, April 1. He was claimed off waivers by San Francisco on April 5 and sent to their alternate site before being recalled on April 27. Bolt went 0-for-1 in two games before he was optioned on April 28 and designated for assignment April 30. He was traded back to the A’s for cash considerations on May 5.

Astros sign catcher Drew Butera to Minor League deal

HOUSTON, TX – The Astros signed veteran catcher Drew Butera to a minor league contract today. Butera will most likely join the Triple A Sugar Land Skeeters later this week.

 

Butera, who is known as a solid defender, has played in parts of 12 seasons in the Major Leagues (2010-21), most recently with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in 2021 where he appeared in 12 games (all starts, in May). He spent most of this season with the Angels Triple A affiliate, the Salt Lake Bees, where he appeared in 49 games, hitting .222 with seven doubles, a triple, four home runs and 11 RBI.

 

Butera has appeared in 521 Major League games at catcher (390 starts) and in 556 games overall. He also has playoff experience as he saw limited action as a member of the 2015 World Series Champion Kansas City Royals team and was a member of the 2018 Colorado Rockies club that defeated the Cubs in the 2018 NL Wild Card Game. Butera has also caught two no-hitters in his Major League career.

 

In his career, Butera has had ML stints with the Twins (2010-13), Dodgers (2013-14), Angels (2015 & 2021), Royals (2015-18) and Rockies (2018-20). Career ML stats: .196, 556 G, 123 H, 59 2B, 5 3B, 19 HR, 123 RBI.

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers activated right-handed pitcher Evan Phillips from the injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher Mitch White.

 

Phillips, 26, has been sidelined with a right quad strain since August 20 and has appeared in one game for the Dodgers this season, recording the win in 2.1 innings of relief on August 19 against the Mets. On the year, he is 1-0 with a save and a 3.38 ERA (2 ER/5.1 IP) in two Major League games. He has spent parts of four seasons in the Major Leagues, going a combined 2-3 with a 7.13 ERA (47 ER/59.1 IP) and 71 strikeouts for Atlanta (2018), Baltimore (2018-2020), Tampa Bay (2021) and Los Angeles (2021). In his minor league career, he is 19-20 with a 3.76 ERA and 306 strikeouts in 187 games. He was originally drafted by the Braves in the 17th round of the 2015 First Year Player Draft out of UNC Wilmington.

 

White, 25, suffered the loss yesterday, allowing three runs in 3.1 innings against the Rockies. On the season, he is 1-2 with a 3.49 ERA (15 ER/38.2 IP) and 41 strikeouts in 18 games for the Dodgers. The former second rounder out of Santa Clara University is 2-2 with a 3.24 ERA (12 ER/41.2 IP) in 20 career MLB games.
