Rangers recall RHP A.J. Alexy and activate RHP Joe Barlow

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced the following roster moves prior to Monday night’s series opener against the Rockies at Globe Life Field:

 

Right-handed pitcher A.J. Alexy recalled from Triple-A Round Rock.

Right-handed pitcher Joe Barlow activated from 10-day Injured List.

Infielder Andy Ibáñez placed on 10-day Injured List, retroactive to August 29, with left hamstring strain.

Left-handed pitcher Jake Latz returned to Triple-A Round Rock.

Alexy, 23, is scheduled to make his Major League debut with a start in Monday night’s game against the Colorado Rockies, the third starting pitcher to make his MLB debut for the Rangers in the club’s last six contests. He has combined to go 3-1 with a 1.66 ERA (12 ER/65.0 IP) over 16 games/10 starts this season for Round Rock (AAA) and Frisco (AA), averaging 10.5 strikeouts per 9 innings while holding opponents to a .175 batting average and .557 OPS figure. He last pitched for the Express on August 20 vs. El Paso, taking no decision in Round Rock’s 6-1 defeat (5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 78 pitches/53 strikes). He has an active scoreless streak of 10.2 consecutive innings at Triple-A.

 

Originally acquired by Texas in a July 31, 2017 trade with the Dodgers involving Yu Darvish and Willie Calhoun, Alexy was rated by Baseball America as having the Best Fastball in the Rangers organization prior to the 2021 season. He owns a career 13-19 record with a 3.30 ERA and 10.8 strikeouts per 9 innings over 74 games/62 starts spanning five minor league seasons in the Los Angeles-NL (2016-17) and Texas (2017-21) organizations.

 

Barlow was on the Injured List from August 20-29 with a blister on his right index finger. He has a 0-1 record with a 1.08 ERA (2 ER/16.2 IP) over 17 relief appearances for the Rangers since having his contract selected from Round Rock on June 23 for his first Major League action. He last pitched on August 19 vs. Seattle, taking the loss in Rangers’ 11-inning defeat (2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 R-1 ER). He has a 13.2-inning scoreless streak from July 7-August 19, longest by a Texas reliever in 2021.

 

Ibáñez left the game on Saturday vs. Houston after 6 innings due to the hamstring injury. The first date he would be eligible to return is September 8. Ibáñez has batted .260 with 6 home runs and 19 RBI over 62 games for Texas this season in his first Major League action. He had a career-best 11-game hit streak from August 15-27, including multiple his in 7 straight contests from August 20-27.

 

Latz was added as a replacement player from Triple-A Round Rock on August 25, taking the roster spot of a player on the COVID-19 Related Injured List. Latz’s lone outing with Texas was his Major League debut on Wednesday at Cleveland, taking the loss in the Rangers’ 7-2 defeat (4.2 IP, 5 H, 3 R-ER, 0 BB, 4 SO, 3 HR, 84 pitches/57 strikes). He has combined to go 1-1 with a 4.98 ERA over 17 games/15 games started for Frisco and Round Rock in 2021.

Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA – Prior to tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Boston Red Sox made the following roster moves:

 

Placed left-handed pitcher Martín Pérez and right-handed pitcher Matt Barnes on the COVID-19 Related Injured List.

Recalled right-handed pitcher Phillips Valdez from Triple-A Worcester.

Selected right-handed pitcher Raynel Espinal from Worcester. He will wear number 80.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

 

Pérez, 30, is 7-8 with a 4.88 ERA (58 ER/107.0 IP) in 31 appearances (22 starts) for the Red Sox this season. He last pitched Saturday in Cleveland, earning a hold after allowing an unearned run in one-third of an inning.

 

Barnes, 31, has appeared in 54 games with the Red Sox this season. A 2021 All-Star, he is 6-5 with 24 saves, a 3.81 ERA (21 ER/49.2 IP), a 1.07 WHIP, a .202 opponent batting average, and 14.13 strikeouts per 9.0 innings pitched (78 strikeouts).

 

Valdez, 29, has made 25 appearances for the Red Sox this season, posting a 5.56 ERA (21 ER/34.0 IP) with 33 strikeouts. He has also recorded a 3.68 ERA (6 ER/14.2 IP) in 15 games for Worcester, striking out 18 batters and walking eight with a .241 opponent batting average.

 

Espinal, 29, is making his first appearance on an active major league roster. The right-hander has spent the entire 2021 season with Worcester, making 18 appearances (16 starts) and going 9-4 with a 3.74 ERA (38 ER/91.1 IP) and a .203 opponent batting average. Boston selected the Dominican Republic native from the New York Yankees in the minor league phase of the 2019 Rule 5 Draft.

Washington Nationals recall Keibert Ruiz

The Washington Nationals recalled catcher Keibert Ruiz from Triple-A Rochester on Monday and optioned catcher Tres Barrera to Triple-A Rochester following the game on Sunday. Nationals President of Baseball Operations and General Manager Mike Rizzo made the announcement.

 

Ruiz, 23, is the consensus top prospect in Washington’s Minor League system and is the No. 13 overall prospect in baseball according to Baseball America and the No. 19 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com. He joins the Nationals after hitting .308 with six doubles, five homers, 14 RBI, seven walks and 11 runs scored in 20 games with Triple-A Rochester.

 

In his last 13 games with the Red Wings, Ruiz went 21-for-52 (.404) with six doubles, four homers, 13 RBI, five walks and 10 runs scored. On August 24th at Syracuse (NYM), he clubbed his fifth multi-home run game of the season and his first as a member of the Washington Nationals organization. He followed that up with another multi-homer game the next day, the first time he’s recorded multi-homer games on back-to-back days.

 

Ruiz ranks fourth in all of Minor League Baseball with a .616 slugging percentage and ranks ninth with a .993 OPS. All told, he hit .310 with 24 doubles, 21 homers, 59 RBI, 30 walks and 50 runs scored in 72 games between Triple-A Oklahoma City and Triple-A Rochester.

 

The switch-hitting Ruiz has posted a strikeout rate at 12.0% (MLB average: 23.6%) or below in five of his six Minor League seasons, including a 10.4% mark in 316 plate appearances between Triple-A Oklahoma City and Triple-A Rochester in 2021. His 10.4% strikeout rate ranks 19th in all of Minor League Baseball and second-best among all upper level (Double-A and Triple-A) Minor Leaguers. He struck out just six times in 85 plate appearances with the Red Wings.

 

Ruiz appeared in eight Major League games across two seasons (2020-21) for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He homered in his first career at bat, a solo home run off Julio Teheran on Aug. 16th at Los Angeles (AL). In his first game of the 2021 season, Ruiz hit a pinch-hit solo home run off Kyle Hendricks on May 4th at Chicago (NL).

 

A native of Valencia, Venezuela, Ruiz has hit .301 with a .356 on-base percentage and a .453 slugging percentage across 459 career Minor League games. He has hit 100 doubles, six triples, 50 home runs, 258 RBI, 134 walks and 238 runs scored across six Minor League seasons (2015-21). Ruiz originally signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers as a non-drafted free agent, July 20, 2014.

 

Ruiz was acquired by the Nationals from the Los Angeles Dodgers along with right-handed pitcher Josiah Gray, right-handed pitcher Gerardo Carrillo and outfielder Donovan Casey in exchange for right-handed pitcher Max Scherzer and shortstop Trea Turner on July 30th, 2021.

 

Barrera, 26, hit .264 with three doubles, one triple, two homers, 10 RBI, 12 walks and eight runs scored in 30 games for the Nationals in 2021.

Bengals acquire Hill in trade with Giants

The Bengals today acquired DT B.J. Hill from the N.Y. Giants, in exchange for C Billy Price.

 

Hill (6-3, 311), a fourth-year player out of North Carolina State University, originally was a third-round pick of the Giants in 2018. He has played in all 48 possible games (17 starts) during his career, and has 102 tackles, 7.5 sacks and three passes defensed.

 

Price, a fourth-year pro out of Ohio State University, originally was a first-round pick of the Bengals in 2018. He has played in 42 career games (19 starts).

Xavier Arreaga, Alex Roldan and Brad Smith to join Ecuador, El Salvador and Australia, respectively, for September FIFA World Cup Qualifiers; Cristian Roldan and Raúl Ruidíaz call-ups previously announced

SEATTLE, WASH. – Three additional Sounders FC players have been called into international duty for upcoming 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Xavier Arreaga, Alex Roldan and Brad Smith are set to report to Ecuador, El Salvador and Australia, respectively, joining Cristian Roldan (United States) and Raúl Ruidíaz (Peru), who were previously announced last week.

Arreaga, 26, looks to build on an established national team career with Ecuador, already having 12 caps – all starts – under his belt. Arreaga has played in six matches during Ecuador’s 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign so far and scored a goal in a 6-1 win over Colombia. La Tri is set to play three matches in this round of qualifiers against Paraguay on September 2, Chile on September 5 and Uruguay on September 9. The Ecuadorian has scored two goals in 16 appearances for the Rave Green this year.

Alex Roldan, 25, earns his second career call-up for El Salvador, previously getting the nod for the team’s 2021 Concacaf Gold Cup tournament run. He scored a goal in his first appearance with the squad, a 2-0 win over Guatemala in the group stage. Roldan went on to appear in all four matches for the Central American side during the tournament, starting two. El Salvador is scheduled to play the United States on September 2, Honduras on September 5 and Canada on September 8. He has started 18 matches for Sounders FC during its 2021 campaign, scoring one goal.

Smith, 27, continues his international career for Australia, where he has logged 22 caps, including two starts in 2022 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, both of which were victories. Smith had previously appeared in 12 matches (11 starts) during the Socceroos’ 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifying campaign. Australia is scheduled to play China on September 2 and Vietnam on September 7. Smith has started 15 matches for the Rave Green this year, scoring three goals.

Despite a 2-0 home loss to Portland on Sunday, Seattle remains in first place in the Western Conference with 42 points (12-4-6) heading into the international break. Brian Schmetzer’s side returns to action on Saturday, September 11 against Minnesota United FC at Lumen Field (2:00 p.m. PT / JOEtv, Prime Video, Univision, 950 KJR AM, El Rey 1360 AM).

Seven Philadelphia Union Players Receive International Call-Ups

Philadelphia Union players to represent national teams over upcoming FIFA international window

CHESTER, Pa. – Philadelphia Union today announced that seven players have received international call-ups from their respective federations ahead of the upcoming FIFA international window. Andre Blake, Cory Burke, Alvas Powell, Jamiro Monteiro, Olivier Mbaizo, Daniel Gazdag and Jose Martinez have joined their respective countries’ teams for 2022 World Cup Qualifier matches.

Blake, Burke and Powell were called up once again to the Jamaican National Team. The trio, who were all last called up in July for the Gold Cup where the Reggae Boyz made it to the quarterfinals, now prepare for the final stage of World Cup Qualifiers. Blake, who captains the squad, has 48 caps as the starting goalkeeper for the team. Burke has 22 caps for the Reggae Boyz and has scored seven goals in that time, most recently scoring in the group stage of the Gold Cup to secure a 2-1 victory vs. Guadeloupe on July 17. Powell, a stalwart on the Jamaican National Team, has 52 caps. In a 2019 Concacaf Nations League match, Powell scored a brace in a 4-0 win over Guyana for his first international goals. Jamaica will face Mexico on Thursday, Sept. 2 at 10:00 p.m., Panama on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 6:00 p.m. and Costa Rica on Sept. 8. at 9:00 p.m.

Monteiro and Mbaizo join the Cape Verde National Team and Cameroon National Team respectively for the second round of the FIFA World Cup African Qualifiers. Both players were last called up in March ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. Monteiro has earned 10 caps for Cape Verde, nine in Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches and one in an International Friendly. Cape Verde will face Central African Republic on Wednesday, Sept. 1 at 9:00 a.m. and Nigeria on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 12:00 p.m.

This is Mbaizo’s fourth senior team call up for Cameroon as they also prepare for a pair of second round World Cup Qualifiers. He has earned four senior international caps for the Indomitable Lions, his first when he made his debut as a substitute in a friendly vs. Gabon on September 6, 2016. Cameroon will play against Malawi on Friday, Sept. 3 at 3:00 p.m. and Ivory Coast on Monday, Sept. 6 at 3:00 p.m.

Gazdag will join the Hungarian National Team for their four matches in the group stage of the European qualifiers. Gazdag has earned six caps and was most recently called up in June ahead of Euro 2020. In his six appearances, Gazdag has scored one goal in a World Cup qualifying match against Andorra on March 31, 2021.

Martinez returns to the Venezuelan National Team after a standout four-game run with the team in June for Copa America 2021.  Martinez, who has a total of five caps for La VinoTinto, played in all four matches for Venezuela in the tournament. He also notched his first assist for the national team in a 1-1 draw against Ecuador on June 20. Martinez who made his debut for the team in a World Cup qualifier match on June 3, 2021, against Bolivia, will join them again for their matches vs. Argentina on Sept. 2 at 8:00 p.m., vs. Peru on Sept. 5 at 9:00 p.m. and vs. Paraguay on Sept. 9 and 6:30 p.m.
