A’s place RHP Jefferies on injured list; recall LHP Sam Moll from Las Vegas

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s placed right-handed pitcher Daulton Jefferies on the injured list retroactive to Sept. 13 with right elbow ulnar neuritis and recalled left-handed pitcher Sam Moll from Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

 

Jefferies was 1-0 with a 3.60 ERA (6 er in 15.0 ip) over five games (one start) in two stints with the A’s this season. He was most recently recalled on Aug. 27 and compiled a 2.70 ERA (3 er in 10.0 ip) over four outings in relief. In his first stint, he started and picked up his first Major League win Aug. 1 at Los Angeles (AL) and returned to Las Vegas when Kaprielian was reinstated from the IL on Aug. 8. The 26-year-old right hander went 5-1 with a 4.91 ERA and .288 opponents batting average in 15 starts overall with the Aviators and issued just 11 walks in 77.0 innings (1.29 per nine innings).

 

Moll joins the A’s for the third time this year. He was most recently recalled on Sept. 3 and pitched 2.0 scoreless innings out of the bullpen at Toronto on Sept. 5. He appeared three times during his first stint from July 3 to 26 and did not allow a run in 2.2 innings (1 h, 3 bb, 2 so). The 29-year-old left-hander began the season at Triple-A Reno in the Arizona farm system and was traded to the A’s for cash in a minor league deal on July 2. Moll went 1-1 with two saves and had a 4.58 ERA in 33 relief appearances overall at Triple-A. He allowed a .231 opponents batting average, including .114 with a .401 OPS against left-handed hitters.

Drew Maggi contract selected from Triple-A St. Paul

 

TORONTO, ON – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed outfielder Rob Refsnyder on the 10-day Injured List with right elbow impingement.

 

Refsnyder has played in 51 games for the Twins this season, hitting .245 (34-for-139) with seven doubles, two home runs, 12 RBI, 21 runs scored, 17 walks and a .325 on-base percentage.

 

To replace Refsnyder on the 28-man roster, the Twins have selected the contract of infielder Drew Maggi (pronounced MAJ-ee) from Triple-A St. Paul. The 32-year-old has played in 86 games for the Saints this season, hitting .261 (74-for-284) with 12 doubles, two triples, 16 home runs, 48 RBI, 53 runs scored, 36 walks, a .364 on-base percentage and an .850 OPS. The 6-foot, 192-pound infielder has spent the last three years in the Twins’ organization after originally signing a minor league contract prior to the 2019 season. He will be in uniform for today’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays, wearing number 89, and is looking to make his major league debut.

 

Additionally, to make room for Maggi on the 40-man roster, the Twins have transferred left-handed pitcher Taylor Rogers to the 60-day Injured List. Rogers, who was originally placed on the 10-day Injured List on July 27, has missed the club’s last 47 games with a left middle finger sprain.

Game Recap: Ti-Cats capitalize on turnovers to take down Stamps

HAMILTON — Simoni Lawrence notched his second pick-six of the season and Taylor Bertolet added five field goals to help the Hamilton Tiger-Cats claim a 23-17 win over the Calgary Stampeders on Friday night at Tim Hortons field to kick off Week 7.

 

Hamilton (3-3) overcame the loss of quarterback Dane Evans, with David Watford earning the win in his first career CFL start. Watford completed 86 per cent of his passes for 149 yards while also adding 35 yards on 10 carries.

 

The opening half was largely defined by special teams blunders from both teams. Both punt return units muffed punts that led to field goals in the first quarter, and another punt return miscue by Calgary (2-5) led to a second Ticats field goal just before halftime.

 

Both offences struggled to find a rhythm against stout defensive fronts in the first half, but a 74-yard catch-and-run by Calgary rookie Luther Hakunavanhu opened things up early in the third quarter.

 

The play led to a QB sneak touchdown by Jake Maier that put Calgary on top, but Hamilton’s defence reclaimed the lead later in the third when Lawrence found the end zone. Hamilton increased the lead in the fourth quarter with two more field goals by Bertolet.

 

Maier took over under centre for Calgary to finish the game and threw a five-yard touchdown to Richie Sindani with 16 seconds left, but the Stamps were unable to recover the onside kick.

 

The Stampeders turned the ball over on special teams in the opening quarter when former Ticat Richard Leonard fumbled a punt return off his facemask. Long snapper Gordon Whyte recovered the fumble to set the offence up in Calgary territory.

 

While Hamilton failed to pick up a first down on the ensuing drive, a four-yard run by Watford moved the ball close enough for Bertolet to make a 47-yard field goal.

 

Calgary turned the tables and took advantage of a special teams miscue on the next drive, as Hamilton return ace Frankie Williams was unable to corral a punt before the ball bounced out of bounds.

 

The Stamps were awarded possession after a review showed the ball was last touched by Calgary defensive back Ramon Richards, and the turnover led to a game-tying 31-yard field goal by Rene Paredes with under seven minutes to go in the first quarter.

 

Hamilton recovered another special teams turnover in the final minutes of the second quarter when a Michael Domagala punt went off the facemask of Calgary’s Markeith Ambles and bounced directly into the waiting hands of Hamilton’s Stavros Katsantonis.

 

Watford and the Ticats’ offence moved the ball into scoring range but were unable to solve the Stamps’ defence, settling for an 18-yard field goal by Bertolet to take a 6-3 lead entering halftime.

 

Hamilton began to move the chains to start the third quarter following back-to-back first down pickups by Tim White, leading to a 49-yard field goal by Bertolet. But Calgary responded with the biggest offensive play of the day, as Mitchell connected with Hakunavanhu for a 74-yard gain that nearly found the end zone.

 

Hakunavanhu bounced off Williams and spun away from Tunde Adeleke before gaining an extra 28 yards, with Adeleke dragging him down at the goal line. Maier finished the drive off with the QB sneak touchdown, and Peredes nailed the extra point to give Calgary a 10-9 lead.

 

But Calgary was not in control for long, as the Ticats’ defence pounced on an opportunity to retake the lead later in the quarter.

 

Mitchell fired a short pass that deflected off the chest of Hakunavanhu and into the hands of Lawrence, who proceeded to power his way to the end zone for the touchdown. Hamilton added two more points on a successful conversion by Maleek Irons on a three-yard run.

 

Bertolet added field goals of 19 and 33 yards in the fourth quarter while Hamilton’s defence continued to frustrate Calgary with constant pressure, including a turnover on downs.

 

Maier came in and led an impressive late touchdown drive that was capped off with a five-yard strike to Sindani, but it was too little too late as the onside kick attempt went out of bounds.

 

Facing a short turnaround, Hamilton will host the Ottawa REDBLACKS to kick off Week 8 on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET. Calgary is off next week before hosting the Saskatchewan Roughriders to close out Week 9 on Oct. 2 at 7 p.m. ET.

TITANS TRAVEL TO SEATTLE TO FACE SEAHAWKS

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Titans (1-0) travel west in Week 2 to face the reigning NFC West champion Seattle Seahawks (1-0).  Kickoff at Lumen Field (capacity 68,740) is scheduled for 1:25 PDT/3:25 CDT on Sunday, Sept. 19. The two clubs last met on Sept. 24, 2017, when the Titans won 33-27 in Tennessee. The Titans have not traveled to Seattle since suffering a loss there Oct. 13, 2013.

 

TITANS LOOK TO REGROUP AFTER WEEK 1
The Titans hosted the Arizona Cardinals last week to begin the 2021 season. Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray accounted for five touchdowns (four passing and one rushing), and outside linebacker Chandler Jones totaled five sacks to help the Cardinals fly out of Nissan Stadium with a 38-13 victory.

Quarterback Ryan Tannehill completed a touchdown pass to wide receiver A.J. Brown and rushed for another score. Dating back to the 2020 season, Tannehill has 14 consecutive games with one or more touchdown passes (tied for fifth in franchise history), and he has registered four consecutive games with at least one touchdown pass and at least one rushing touchdown (tied for second in the NFL since 1970).

Titans running back Derrick Henry, the NFL’s back-to-back reigning rushing champion, began the season with a team-high 58 rushing yards on 17 attempts. On defense, the Titans got sacks from outside linebacker Harold Landry III and defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons, and safety Kevin Byard recorded his 19th career interception to move into a tie for 15th place on the franchise’s career interception list.

THE SEAHAWKS
Head coach Pete Carroll is in his 12th year on the Seattle sideline. He led the Seahawks to the playoffs in nine of his first 11 years on the job, including last year’s division championship after finishing 12-4.

Quarterback Russell Wilson has started every game for the Seahawks since he was a third-round draft pick in 2012. At the conclusion of the 2020 campaign, he ranked second in NFL history for the most passing touchdowns in a player’s first nine seasons with 267 (Peyton Manning, 275), and he became the only quarterback in NFL history with a winning record in each of his first nine seasons.

The Seahawks opened last week at Indianapolis. Wilson passed for four touchdowns, including two to wide receiver Tyler Lockett, as the Seahawks rolled to a 28-16 victory.

SERIES HISTORY

The Titans and Seahawks have met 17 times during the regular season and postseason. The Seahawks lead the series 10-7, although the Titans have won the lone playoff game between the clubs. Seattle has won eight of the last 11 matchups.

The Seahawks visited Nissan Stadium most recently on Sept. 24, 2017. The Titans used 115 rushing yards by DeMarco Murray and two touchdown passes by Marcus Mariota to pull out a 33-27 win. Murray picked up 75 of his rushing yards on a touchdown run.

The last time the Titans and Seahawks met at Lumen Field was Oct. 13, 2013. The score was tied 10-10 at the start of the fourth  quarter, but the Seahawks surged ahead for a 20-13 victory. The Seahawks defense limited Titans quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick to 171 yards and intercepted two of his passes.

In a memorable 2009 season finale at Lumen Field (Jan. 3, 2010), Titans running back Chris Johnson became the sixth player in NFL history to reach 2,000 rushing yards in a season, and he also set a new NFL record with 2,509 yards from scrimmage in a season. His final carry of the day resulted in a one-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to give the Titans a 17-13 win.

The Seahawks began play as an expansion team in the NFC West in 1976. One season later, they were moved to the AFC West and played the then-Houston Oilers for the first time. The Oilers won the initial meeting (Nov. 20) by a 22-10 final score.

In a 1987 Wild Card Playoff game, the Oilers defeated the Seahawks at the Astrodome 23-20 in overtime. It was the Oilers’ first playoff victory since the 1979 season.

The Seahawks migrated from the AFC West to the NFC West to begin the 2002 season, when the league was realigned to eight four-team divisions. The same year Lumen Field opened. Prior to that the Seahawks played their home games at the Kingdome.

GAME RECAP
The Titans returned home in Week 3 of the 2017 season to host the Seattle Seahawks for the first time since 2005. Tennessee  improved to 2-1 on the season with a 33-27 victory.

The first quarter saw eight straight punts from both teams, four from Tennessee and four from Seattle. LBs Jayon Brown and Wesley Woodyard made crucial third down stops that halted the Seattle offense.

QB Marcus Mariota converted a third down on a 17-yard pass to WR Eric Decker to close out the first quarter. On the first play of the second quarter, Mariota ran the ball in for a touchdown but it was called back due to a holding penalty on Decker. Tennessee was forced to settle for a 24-yard field goal by K Ryan Succop to put the Titans on the board, 3-0.

The Tennessee defense took the field and forced Seattle’s fifth consecutive threeand-out. After a late hit by Sherman on Mariota that caused an on-field scuffle, the Titans offense lengthened the lead to 6-0 on a 37-yard field goal by Succop.

In the second quarter, CB Adoree’ Jackson returned a punt 80 yards for a score, but the touchdown was nullified due to a penalty. Seahawks QB Russell Wilson hit WR Doug Baldwin for a four-yard touchdown, but Tennessee responded with another field goal to put the Titans back on top 9-7 heading into halftime.

In the third stanza, Mariota connected with both WR Rishard Matthews for a 55-yard score and TE Jonnu Smith for a 24-yard touchdown, increasing the Titans lead to 23-14. RB DeMarco Murray also ran in a 75-yard score, which tied for his second-longest career rush, to increase the margin to 30-14.

In the fourth quarter, Seattle added a pair of touchdowns by both TE Luke Willson and WR Paul Richardson, but failed to execute a two point conversion. Succop converted his fourth field goal of the day as Tennessee sealed a 33-27 home victory.

49ERS AT EAGLES

The San Francisco 49ers open the 2021 regular season with their second-consecutive road trip as they travel to Philadelphia to take  n the Eagles. After spending the week in West Virginia, the Niners look to begin the season 2-0 for the second time in three seasons. San Francisco has a 19-14-1 overall record against the Eagles, as the teams have split each of the past four meetings. The 49ers aim to win their first game in Philadelphia since earning a 24-23 victory in 2011. The Niners are coming off a 41-33 victory over the Detroit Lions. The team’s 41 points scored were the third-most by the team in a season opener and the most on the road. San Francisco’s offense was led by QB Jimmy Garoppolo, who finished the game completing 17 of 25 attempts for 314 yards, one touchdown and a passer rating of 124.2. WR Deebo Samuel registered nine receptions for a career-high 189 yards and one touchdown on the day. Making his NFL debut, rookie RB Elijah Mitchell registered 19 carries for 104 yards and one touchdown on the ground. RB JaMycal Hasty also added a three-yard touchdown run, while WR Trent Sherfield caught a five-yard touchdown pass from QB Trey Lance on his first career pass. On defense, the 49ers brought down Lions QB Jared Goff three times. DL Nick Bosa, DL Dee Ford and DL Kentavius Street each registered 1.0 sack on the day. LB Dre Greenlaw intercepted Goff and returned the pass 39 yards for a touchdown. The interception was the second of his career and the first interception returned for a touchdown by the 49ers since DT Javon Kinlaw had a 27-yard interception returned for a touchdown at the Los Angeles Rams (11/29/20), also coming off Goff.

 

THE HEAD COACHES

Kyle Shanahan was named the 20th head coach of the San Francisco 49ers on February 6, 2017. He enters his fifth season with the 49ers after spending the previous two seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Atlanta Falcons. Shanahan has 17 seasons of coaching experience at the NFL level, including nine seasons as an offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons (2015-16), Cleveland Browns (2014), Washington Redskins (2010-13) and Houston Texans (2008-09). In six of his nine seasons as an offensive coordinator (2008-09, 2012-13 and 2015-16), and one as head coach of the 49ers (2019), Shanahan has directed an offense that ranked in the top 10 in the NFL in yards gained. In 2019, Shanahan led the 49ers to NFC West and Conference titles en route to a trip to Super Bowl LIV in his third season with the team, winning Coach of the Year honors by Sporting News and NFC Coach of the Year by the Committee of 101. Following the 2016 season, Shanahan was named Associated Press Assistant Coach of the Year, Coordinator of the Year by Sporting News and Assistant Coach of the Year by the Pro Football Writers of America after a record-setting performance by the Falcons offense en route to capturing the NFC South Division Title and an appearance in Super Bowl LI.

 

Nick Sirianni was named head coach of the Philadelphia Eagles on January 24, 2021, following a three-year stint as the Indianapolis  olts offensive coordinator. During the 2018-20 seasons, the Colts combined for a 28-20 record (.583 winning percentage), including a pair of 10-plus-win campaigns, and made two playoff appearances. During an 11-5 season in 2020, rookie running back Jonathan Taylor (1,169 yards) ranked third among the league’s rushing leaders, trailing Derrick Henry (2,027) and Dalvin Cook (1,557), and tied for the most rushing scores (11) by a rookie since Ezekiel Elliott in 2016 (15). In 2018, Sirianni’s first season leading Indianapolis’ offense, QB Andrew Luck was named Associated Press NFL Comeback Player of the Year and earned his fourth career Pro Bowl nod. Prior to joining the Colts, Sirianni spent five years (2013-17) as a member of the Los Angeles/San Diego Chargers’ coaching staff, including two seasons as wide receivers coach (2016-17). Sirianni originally joined the Chargers as an offensive quality control coach in 2013. Sirianni began his NFL coaching career with the Kansas City Chiefs (2009-12), serving as wide receivers coach (2012) and offensive quality control coach (2009-11). Before entering the NFL coaching ranks, Sirianni spent five years at the collegiate level as wide receivers coach at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (2006-08) and as defensive backs coach at Mount Union (2004-05), his alma mater.

PACKERS HOST LIONS IN HOME OPENER ON MNF

The Green Bay Packers return to Lambeau Field to take on the Detroit Lions on Monday Night Football. u This is the second MNF game vs. Detroit at Lambeau in the last three seasons and the third in the last five seasons (2017, 2019). Prior to the 2017 contest, the last MNF meeting was in 1972.

• Green Bay is opening its home schedule vs. Detroit for the second straight year (also Week 2 in 2020).

• Green Bay has won eight straight home openers (2013-20). Since 2007, the Packers are 13-1 in their first game of the season at Lambeau Field.

• This is the first time the Packers’ home opener has been on MNF since 2008 (Week 1 vs. Minnesota). u Green Bay scored 42 points in the meeting at Lambeau last season, the most it had scored at home against the Lions since posting 45 in 2011.

• In his 13th season in the NFL, having previously served as an offensive coordinator for two seasons (Los Angeles Rams, 2017; Tennessee Titans, 2018), a quarterbacks coach for six seasons (Washington Football Team, 2010-13; Atlanta Falcons, 2015-16), and an offensive assistant for two seasons (Houston Texans, 2008-09).
