Royals sign three more Draft picks

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The Kansas City Royals announced today that they have signed 18 of their 21 selections in last week’s 2021 First-Year Player Draft, adding three more to the list this afternoon.

 

The most recent signees include catcher Carter Jensen (3rd round, 78th overall), infielder Dayton Dooney (6th round, 169th overall) and shortstop Brennon McNair (11th round, 319th overall).

 

Jensen is a graduate of nearby Park Hill Senior High School (MO), where he was named a Perfect Game Preseason All-American this season and was committed to play baseball at Louisiana State University before signing with the Royals. He’s the highest drafted catcher by the Royals since the club selected MJ Melendez in the second round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft.

 

Dooney attended Central Arizona College in 2021 and batted .376/.452/.706 this season, helping the Vaqueros reach the Championship Game of the Junior College World Series. As a freshman at the University of Arizona in 2019, he was named a First-Team Freshman All-American, hitting .323 (51-for-161) with a 1.013 OPS and 53 RBI.

 

McNair graduated from Magee High School (MS), where was named Co-Player of the Year in Division 3A by the Mississippi Association of Coaches this year. During his senior season, he batted .527 with 39 runs, 43 RBI, 12 doubles, and 11 home runs at the plate, while he pitched to a 6-2 record with 65 strikeouts and a 1.42 ERA in 54.1 innings on the mound.

Wilf Family Completes Purchase of Orlando City Soccer Club and Orlando Pride

The DeVos family joins Orlando ownership group as limited partner

 

ORLANDO, Fla.  — The Wilf family has finalized its acquisition of Orlando City Soccer Club, becoming the Club’s new majority owners, it was announced today. The purchase includes Orlando City Soccer Club of Major League Soccer, the Orlando Pride of the National Women’s Soccer League, Exploria Stadium and all related soccer assets, including the Orlando City Academy and Youth Soccer Network, and the Club’s two official training facilities, the Orlando Health Training Ground at Osceola Heritage Park and the Orlando Health Training Ground at Sylvan Lake Park.

 

Mark Wilf, along with his brother Zygi and cousin Lenny, will be managing partners of Orlando City SC and Orlando Pride. Mark will serve as Chairman and Governor. The Wilf family has owned the National Football League’s Minnesota Vikings for the past 17 years and they lead Garden Homes, the family’s real estate firm, a nationwide leader in retail, commercial, and private residential development.

 

“We are humbled to become stewards of Orlando City SC and the Orlando Pride, clubs with strong and established foundations on the pitch, with renowned supporters and a passionate fan base, and in a community we are extremely proud to represent,” said new Chairman Mark Wilf.

The DeVos family will join the ownership group as a limited partner. The DeVos family has been part of the fabric of Orlando since purchasing the National Basketball Association’s Orlando Magic in 1991. Dan DeVos will serve as the family’s lead representative. Dan is chairman of the Orlando Magic and the Orlando Magic Youth Foundation.

 

“We are also thrilled to welcome the DeVos family as part of our ownership group,” Mark Wilf added. “Dan and the DeVos family are synonymous with Orlando sports and community. They are a valued and strong strategic partner as we move forward and work to create sustained success for Orlando City SC and the Orlando Pride.”

 

With the purchase of Orlando City SC and the Orlando Pride, the Wilf family has dissolved its minority stake in 2020 MLS expansion side Nashville SC.

 

The Wilf family will be formally introduced and welcomed to Orlando at a media event and availability at Exploria Stadium on Wednesday, August 4. More details on this event will be forthcoming.

Dodgers-Mets trade: McKinney for OF prospect

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired outfielder Billy McKinney from the New York Mets in exchange for minor league outfielder Carlos Rincon. The Dodgers designated right-handed pitcher Jake Reed for assignment to make room for McKinney on the 40-man roster.

 

McKinney, 26, has split the year between Milwaukee and New York, batting a combined .213 (39-for-183) with eight homers and 20 RBI in 79 games. In his 39 games with the Mets, he batted .220 (20-for-91) with five homers and 14 RBI. In parts of four Major League seasons with the New York Yankees (2018), Toronto Blue Jays (2018-2020), Milwaukee Brewers (2021) and New York Mets (2021), he has hit a combined .225 (125-for-556) with 26 homers and 61 RBI. He was originally drafted in the first round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft out of Plano West High School by the Oakland Athletics.

 

Rincon, 23, played in 63 games for Double-A Tulsa this year, batting .263 (61-for-232) with 12 homers and 48 RBI. He has been in the minor leagues for six seasons, batting a combined .244 (386-for-1579) with 84 homers and 259 RBI across six levels. He was signed by the Dodgers as an international free agent on July 2, 2015 out of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

Twins place Kirilloff on 10-day injured list

Willians Astudillo recalled from Triple-A St. Paul

 

CHICAGO, IL – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed outfielder/first baseman Alex Kirilloff on the 10-day Injured List with a right wrist ligament tear (retroactive to July 20) and is scheduled to have surgery later this week to repair the ligament (Dr. Thomas Graham).

 

Kirilloff has played in 59 games for the Twins this season, hitting .251 (54-for-215) with 11 doubles, one triple, eight home runs, 34 RBI, 14 walks and a .722 OPS. Kirilloff spent time on the Injured List earlier this season (May 5-21) after injuring the same ligament in his right wrist.

 

To replace Kirilloff on the 26-man roster, the Twins have recalled catcher/infielder Willians Astudillo from Triple-A St. Paul. Astudillo hit .281 (25-for-89) with three doubles, two home runs, eight RBI and a .701 OPS in 22 games for the Saints after being optioned to Triple-A on June 19. In 41 games with the Twins earlier this season, he hit .254 (31-for-122) with four doubles, four home runs, 12 RBI and a .661 OPS.

Mets acquire outfielder Carlos Rincon

FLUSHING, N.Y., – The New York Mets today announced the team has acquired minor league outfielder Carlos Rincon and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Dodgers in exchange for outfielder Billy McKinney. Rincon will report to Double-A Binghamton.

 

Rincon, 23, has played 63 games at Double-A Tulsa this year, slashing .263/.343/.470 with 12 doubles, 12 home runs, 48 RBI and 33 runs scored.

 

He¬ was originally signed by the Dodgers on July 2, 2015 as a non-drafted free agent. He has spent the entirety of his professional career in the Los Angeles-NL system, slashing .244/.326/.467 with 83 doubles, eight triples, 84 home runs, 259 RBI and 231 runs scored in 441 games spanning five seasons (2016-2019, 2021).

 

McKinney, 26, was acquired by the Mets from Milwaukee on May 25. In 39 games with New York, he batted .220 (20-91) with six doubles, a triple, five home runs, 14 RBI and 15 runs scored. He was designated for assignment on July 16.

A’s agree to terms with 17 of 20 Draft picks; sign two non-drafted free agents

OAKLAND, Calif. – The Oakland A’s agreed to terms with 17 of their 20 selections in the 2021 First-Year Player Draft, the club announced today. The players who have signed or agreed to terms include first round pick Max Muncy, third round selection Mason Miller and each pick from the sixth through 20th rounds. The A’s also signed non-drafted left-handed pitcher Jack Owen from Auburn and first baseman Nick Brueser from Stanford.

 

Muncy was the A’s first round pick out of Thousand Oaks High School. He hit .459 with 11 home runs and 49 RBI in 28 games to help Thousand Oaks to a 29-1 record and the Southern Section Division 2 championship. The shortstop was named the Los Angeles Times and Los Angeles Daily News Baseball Player of the Year and was CIF Southern Section Division 2 Player of the Year.

 

Miller went 8-1 with a 3.30 ERA in 15 games, including 14 starts, for Gardner-Webb University to earn Big South All-Conference honors. He led the Big South and ranked 21st in the nation with 121 strikeouts. The 22-year-old right-hander held the opposition to a .210 batting average, which was the best mark in school history. Miller also spent four seasons at Waynesburg and went 18-12 with a 3.92 ERA and 306 strikeouts in 239.0 innings at the collegiate level.

 

Owen went 2-5 with a 5.47 ERA in 11 appearances for Auburn as a senior last year. He helped lead the Tigers to the College World Series as a sophomore with a team-leading 2.75 ERA. The 23-year-old left-hander was 11-10 with a 4.26 ERA in four seasons at Auburn.

 

Brueser hit .304 with 11 home runs, 34 RBI and a .914 OPS in 52 games for Stanford to earn First Team All-Pac-12 honors. He had a .265 average, 13 home runs and 59 RBI in four seasons with the Cardinal. The 22-year-old right-handed hitter was the National High School Home Run Derby Champion at the 2016 Major League Baseball All-Star Game.

Earthquakes Forward Cade Cowell Joins USMNT Camp

SAN JOSE, Calif.  – San Jose Earthquakes forward Cade Cowell and New England Revolution defender Henry Kessler have been called to the U.S. Men’s National Team camp in Dallas by head coach Gregg Berhalter. The USMNT is currently competing in the Concacaf Gold Cup.

 

Nashville SC defender Walker Zimmerman has been ruled out with a hamstring strain. Per the amended tournament regulations, teams can replace injured players up to 24 hours prior to the quarterfinal. The replacement must come from the 60-player provisional roster.

 

At this point, no official requests for roster changes have been submitted to Concacaf.

 

The United States won Group A with a perfect 3-0-0 record following victories over Haiti (1-0), Martinique (6-1) and Canada (1-0). The U.S. will now face the runner-up in Group C, which will be decided tonight between Costa Rica and Jamaica, in the quarterfinals on Sunday, July 25 at AT&T Stadium.

 

Last Saturday, Cowell, 17, became the first player in Major League Soccer with at least four goals (4) and four assists (4) so far this season.

Orlando City SC Statement Regarding Forward Chris Mueller

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando City SC and Chris Mueller have been involved in contract negotiations for some time, with the forward’s contract set to expire following the 2021 Major League Soccer season. Earlier, Mueller informed the Club that he has signed a pre-contract to join a European team upon the end of his time with Orlando City. The pre-contract was signed in line with all FIFA regulations.

 

As noted, Mueller’s contract with Orlando City is valid through the end of the 2021 MLS season and will continue as a member of the Lions’ roster for the remainder of his time in Orlando.

Split-T Management signs Heavyweight Prospect Antonio Mireles; 2020 USA Super Heavyweight Olympic Trial Champion

NEW YORK – Split-T Management is pleased to announce the signing of its biggest athlete in 6’9″ Iowa-native Antonio Mireles.

 

Mireles, 24 years-old of Des Moines, Iowa is affectionately known as “The Lincoln Giant” because of his tremendous stature and status as a graduate of Lincoln High School in Des Moines.

 

“I am very excited to sign with Split-T Management. They had their eye on me as an amateur. They saw me in a few tournaments and they were impressed. The goal was the Olympics and now I am ready to turn professional,” said Mireles.

 

“I am a boxer, I like to keep my opponents at bay and use my range. I am out in Oxnard training with Robert Garcia and hopefully will make my debut in September.”

 

“I am as excited about signing Antonio as anyone I’ve ever signed,” said David McWater of Split-T Management. “I think he has the ability to be heavyweight champion of the world some day and the opportunity to be a tremendous star.”

 

Mireles, of Mexican-American descent, initially began boxing at the Des Moines PAL at the age of 12 and started competing at 15. He was guided for his entire amateur career by a pair of two strong coaches in John Saunders and Elly Nunez.

 

In his relatively brief, but extremely successful run in the amateurs, Mireles compiled a record of 28-4 with 10 knockouts – culminating in winning the 2020 USA Olympic Trials in the Super Heavyweight division. He was also a 2019 National Golden Gloves Champion, a 2019 Eastern Elite Amateur Champion and a five-time Iowa Golden Gloves Champion.

 

Mireles has already impressed new coach Robert Garcia in his transition to the pro ranks, with Garcia noting his new fighters dedication, boxing skills, and “great power” as reasons for a successful future together.
