Super Wild Card Weekend to Include Monday Night Game Beginning with the 2021 Season

0

The NFL has announced that beginning with the 2021 season, Super Wild Card Weekend (January 15-17, 2022) will conclude with a game on Monday night.

The NFL expanded the playoffs last season for the first time since 1990, adding a third Wild Card team in each conference and in the process creating “Super Wild Card Weekend” – three Wild Card games on Saturday and three games on Sunday.

With the addition of a Monday night game to the 2021 playoffs, Super Wild Card Weekend will now have two Wild Card games on Saturday (4:35 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. ET), three on Sunday (1:05 p.m., 4:40 p.m., and 8:15 p.m. ET), and one on Monday (8:15 p.m. ET).

For the 2021 season, CBS and NBC will both broadcast two Super Wild Card Weekend games while FOX and ESPN/ABC will each have one. The broadcaster for the Monday night game of Super Wild Card Weekend is yet to be determined.

The 2020 playoff expansion ensured that two additional Wild Card teams – one each in the American and National Football Conferences – qualify for the playoffs. The No. 1 seed in each conference will receive a bye in the Wild Card round. The remaining division champions in each conference will be seeded 2, 3, and 4 by record, followed by the next three teams per conference with the best records seeded 5, 6, and 7.

AFC and NFC Wild Card games will feature the 2 seed hosting the 7 seed, the 3 seed hosting the 6 seed and the 4 seed hosting the 5 seed.

GAME NOTES

HEADLINES
GAINING EXPERIENCE: The Jets, whose Kickoff Weekend roster averaged 25.13 years of age (tied for the youngest in the league) leads the NFL over the first two weeks in snaps taken by rookie first-year players • On offense, four different rookies have taken a league-leading 438 snaps, including 100+ snaps by quarterback Zach Wilson, guard Alijah Vera-Tucker and wide receiver Elijah Moore • On defense, four different rookies have taken a league-leading 213 snaps, 100 snaps more than the NFL average, while rookie cornerbacks Michael Carter II and Brandin Echols have both taken at least 75 snaps.

BACKFIELD PRESSURE: The defense is one of just nine teams in the league with at least 10 quarterback hits and 10 tackles for loss • Defensive lineman John Franklin-Myers, the team’s leader in sacks (2.0) and quarterback hits (three), has recorded sacks in consecutive games and is one of just five players since Week 15 of the 2020 season to post a sack in four of his last five games played.

DEFENSE: Over the first two weeks, the Jets defense has ranked in the top three in both opponent’s red zone touchdown percentage (allowing touchdowns on two of seven possessions) and opponent’s third-down conversion percentage, the only team in the league in the top three in both.

RUSHING OFFENSE: Last week vs. NE (9/19), the Jets produced 152 yards rushing on 31 carries (4.9 average), including seven carries of 10+ yards • Those seven 10+ yard runs are tied for the second most in a game this season and only the ninth time in the last 10 seasons they have produced at least seven carries of 10+ yards in a game • Running backs Michael Carter (three) and Ty Johnson (two) each have multiple carries of 10+ yards, while Carter is tied for second among all rookies in carries of 10+ yards this season.

PASSING OFFENSE: Through the first two games, the Jets offense and quarterback Zach Wilson have eight completions of 20+ yards and at least three in each of the first two games • Additionally, five different players have caught a pass of at least 20 yards, including multiple receptions by wide receivers Corey Davis (three) and Braxton Berrios (two).
