The Golden Knights joined the Flyers in 1974 (SF vs. NYR & SCF vs. BOS), Penguins in 1992 (DSF vs. WSH & DF vs. NYR), Flames in 2004 (CQF vs. VAN & CSF vs. DET) and Bruins in 2011 (CF vs. TBL & SCF vs. VAN).

* Vegas’ victory also marked the fourth instance in NHL history in which a team overcame a 2-0 series deficit to win a best-of-seven against the No. 1 seed. Chicago achieved the feat in the 1962 and 1965 Semifinals, while Boston also did so in the 2011 Stanley Cup Final.

The Golden Knights will face the Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Semifinals, marking the first-ever playoff meeting between the clubs. Montreal owns a 5-1-0 (10 points) edge in six all-time regular-season games versus Vegas (1-2-3, 5 points).

* The inaugural NHL seasons for the Golden Knights (2017-18) and Canadiens (1917-18) were 100 years apart, which is the largest such gap in League history among two franchises meeting in a postseason series. The previous mark was 91 years, when Vegas and Chicago (1926-27) met in the 2020 First Round.

He became the fifth active defenseman with two series clinchers, a cohort which includes teammate Alec Martinez (0-1—1) who also had a Stanley Cup-winning goal (also Victor HedmanDuncan Keith & Kris Letang).

Marc-Andre Fleury (30 saves), whose teams have reached the round before the Stanley Cup Final eight times, earned the 89th playoff win of his NHL career to surpass Billy Smith and Ed Belfour for sole possession of fourth place on the League’s all-time list.

MacKINNON, MATTHEWS AND McDAVID VOTED HART TROPHY FINALISTS

* Matthews was Toronto’s first Hart Trophy finalist since 1992-93, when Doug Gilmour finished second in voting. Matthews can become the third player in franchise history to win the award, after Babe Pratt (1943-44) and Ted Kennedy (1954-55).

North Carolina Sports Betting Bill Expected to Advance in June

Sports betting legislation in the state has not seen any progress since April, but sponsors expect serious discussions to take place in June.

Senate Bill 688 on Halt Since April

The expansion of sports betting in North Carolina has not seen the expected progress, although supporters of the legislation say there might be an advance in June. Senate Bill 688 (SB 688), which was filed by Senators Jim Perry and Paul Lowe, has been at a standstill since April 8, when it was referred to the Committee on Rules and Operations of the Senate.

The proposed legislation aims to extend sportsbooks beyond the two tribal casinos owned by the Eastern Bank of Cherokee Indians. Legalizing sports betting in North Carolina has a huge revenue potential and would be used to fund education and boost the economy.

Currently, the non-regulated sports betting industry in North Carolina is booming and according to estimates, it might stand at nearly $2 billion. For comparison, the state lottery amounts to $1.5 billion and $1.9 billion annually. Senator Jim Perry said:

“We believe every sheriff knows who the bookies are in their county. We see this going on and we see folks avoiding income taxes on money from illegal gambling.”

Legal Sports Betting Could Be a Powerful Economic Engine

If the legislation is approved, North Carolina might see up to 12 online licenses and will allow owners of sports facilities to launch on-site wagering platforms. Senator Lowe pointed out the negative effect of the pandemic on the education sector and said that allowing sports betting might raise revenue to be used for school construction, among other things.

Spectrum Gaming, a non-partisan consultancy specialized in legalized gaming, carried out a report into the tax implications for the state should sports betting become legal. The results show within 5 years, the revenue from casinos would reach $2.2 billion, while income from sports betting would amount to $367 million. Online gambling revenue would equal $300 million, while revenue from video poker could be $2.5 billion.

House Bill 631 was scheduled for a hearing in the House Commerce Committee on May 11, but was canceled later. Rep. Jason Saine, who introduced the bill, said that legislators have become more welcoming towards the bill, since neighboring Tennessee has reported about $16 million in tax revenue so far this year. Saine believes that there will be clarity regarding the bill by the end of June. Other advocates of the legislation hope to tackle the issue in the upcoming weeks before the break starting in July.

“Look at my resume. It is as good as any, and now is my time to get my opportunity against one of the big names in the division. Guys like Andy Ruiz, Dillian Whyte, Joseph Parker, Luis Ortiz, Joe Joyce or Charles Martin are on my radar. I know these guys are waiting around for title shots, but if they really know is happening in the heavyweight division, they will be waiting a long time for that. They need to fight, and I would like to get one of them in the ring,” said the 2015 Boxcino champion.

“Andrey is willing to fight anyone in the division. There are a lot of potential great matchups for Andrey. We are working to secure one of those top contenders,” said Banner Promotions President, Artie Pelullo.
