LIGHTNING BLANK CANADIENS TO CLINCH SECOND CONSECUTIVE STANLEY CUP

* The Lightning became the ninth different franchise to repeat as Stanley Cup champions and fifth to do so among clubs that joined the NHL in 1967-68 or later, joining the Flyers, Islanders, Oilers and Penguins.

* Tampa Bay’s three Stanley Cup wins trail only Detroit (4: 1997, 1998, 2002 & 2008) for the most titles among all teams since the Lightning entered the NHL in 1992-93.

* Tampa Bay is just the second Florida-based franchise to win at least three titles in either the NHL, NBA (Miami Heat: 3), NFL (Miami Dolphins: 2; Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 2) or MLB (Florida Marlins: 2). The Heat (2012, 2013) and Dolphins (1973, 1974) repeated as NBA and Super Bowl champions, respectively.

VASILEVSKIY AWARDED CONN SMYTHE TROPHY
After posting a 16-7 record (1.90 GAA, .937 SV%, 5 SO) en route to claiming his second consecutive Stanley Cup, Andrei Vasilevskiy won the Conn Smythe Trophy, awarded to “the most valuable player to his team in the playoffs.” The winner was selected in a vote by a panel of the Professional Hockey Writers Association.

* Vasilevskiy (Tyumen, Russia) is the first goaltender born outside North America to be named playoff MVP. Overall, this marks the 17th time a goaltender won the Conn Smythe Trophy since the award’s inception in 1964-65.

* Vasilevskiy, just the fourth active goaltender to win multiple Stanley Cups, became the first netminder in NHL history with four series-clinching shutouts in a single postseason and the third in League history with multiple Cup-clinching shutouts (consecutive or otherwise).

MORE ON TAMPA BAY’S SECOND STRAIGHT STANLEY CUP

Nikita Kucherov (8-24—32 in 23 GP), who also led all players in points during the 2020 postseason (7-27—34 in 25 GP), became the sixth different player in the NHL’s expansion era (since 1967-68) to lead the Stanley Cup Playoffs in points in consecutive years (outright or tied).

Brayden Point (14-9—23 in 23 GP) finished the playoffs with six more goals than the next closest players after also pacing the 2020 postseason with a franchise-record 14 goals. Point had a nine-game goal streak – the second-longest such run in NHL history – and became the first player to record 14-plus goals in consecutive playoff years since Lemieux (1991–1992). The only other players in NHL history to do so are Mike Bossy (1981–1983) and Jari Kurri (1984–1985; 1987–1988).

* After winning his first Stanley Cup in 2019 with the Blues and second in 2020 with the LightningPat Maroon claimed the trophy for a third straight year. Already one of eight different players in NHL history to win a championship in consecutive seasons with different teams, Maroon became the first player to win three straight Stanley Cups since multiple players did so with the Islanders dynasty from 1980 to 1983.

* After playing just 2:47 in the entire 2020 Stanley Cup PlayoffsLightning captain Steven Stamkos dressed in all 23 games for Tampa Bay in the 2021 postseason where he produced 8-10—18 to rank tied for third in NHL scoring and match a career high.

* Ross Colton, who scored the game-winning goal in his League debut on Feb. 24 earlier this year, concluded his first NHL season by scoring the Stanley Cup clincher for the Lightning. Colton became the seventh rookie in NHL history to score a Cup-clinching goal and just the second to do so in the League’s modern era (since 1943-44), joining Mike Rupp in 2003 (w/ NJD).

Jon Cooper and Julien BriseBois have now claimed three championships over the last 10 years as a head coach-general manager tandem, winning two Stanley Cups with the Lightning (2020 & 2021) and one Calder Cup with the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals (2012). Forwards Tyler JohnsonAlex Killorn and Ondrej Palat were also part of each championship.

* BriseBois, who acquired key players such as Maroon, Blake ColemanBarclay GoodrowJan Rutta and David Savard after being named to the position Sept. 11, 2018, became the second general manager in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup multiple times within his first three seasons with that title, joining longtime Canadiens executive Sam Pollock (2 from 1964-65–1966-67).

LIGHTNING RUN IT BACK AND CLAIM SECOND STRAIGHT STANLEY CUP
After the Lightning won the 2020 Stanley Cup in an elongated season that took 363 days due to a pause caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, they are again hoisting the prized trophy just 282 days later. Tampa Bay claimed its third championship in franchise history, adding to titles won in 2004 and 2020, with a 1-0 victory over the Canadiens in Game 5.

* In a regular season that featured strictly divisional play and the birth of new rivalries, the Lightning opened their 28th campaign with a victory against the Blackhawks on Jan. 13 and concluded by hoisting the Cup on home ice for the second time (also 2004).

* The Lightning’s championship journey included the first-ever all-Florida matchup in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, a six-game victory, followed by a five-game triumph over the Discover Central Division’s top-seeded Hurricanes. In an epic final-four rematch with the Islanders, the Lightning emerged from the Stanley Cup Semifinals with their sixth all-time Game 7 victory, setting up a meeting with the Canadiens in the Final.

* After winning the Stanley Cup in a “bubble” in Edmonton in 2020, Tampa Bay hoisted the trophy in front of 18,110 fans at AMALIE Arena. It was the second time the Lightning won the Cup on home ice and fourth time in the last 10 years that any team has done so.

* Tampa Bay (3) is just the second Florida-based franchise to win at least three titles in either the NHL, NBA (Miami Heat: 3), NFL (Miami Dolphins: 2; Tampa Bay Buccaneers: 2) or MLB (Florida Marlins: 2).

* Vasilevskiy is just the third Russian-born player to win the Conn Smythe Trophy, joining Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin (Moscow, RUS; 2018) and Penguins forward Evgeni Malkin (Magnitogorsk, RUS; 2009).

* Vasilevskiy also became just the fourth active goaltender to win multiple Stanley Cups, joining Marc-Andre Fleury (3), Jonathan Quick (2) and Matt Murray (2). Fleury and Murray also won consecutive championships.

* Vasilevskiy became the second goaltender in the NHL’s expansion era (since 1967-68) to claim consecutive Stanley Cup titles while earning every victory for his club across each postseason. The only other to do so in that span was Ken Dryden (1976–1979 w/ MTL).

* Vasilevskiy became the first goaltender in more than 40 years to win the Stanley Cup in consecutive playoff years with a goals-against average under 2.00 in each postseason (min. 10 GP in both) since Dryden accomplished the feat in three straight years from 1976 to 1978. The only other goaltender to do so is Jacques Plante, who accomplished the feat in three straight years from 1956 to 1958.

* Vasilevskiy recorded a streak of five straight series-clinching shutouts dating to the Cup-clinching victory in Game 6 of the 2020 Stanley Cup Final (2021: Game 6 of R1, Game 5 of R2, Game 7 of SCSF & Game 5 of SCF). That is the longest such run by a goaltender in NHL history.

* Vasilevskiy became the first goaltender in NHL history with four series-clinching shutouts in a single postseason. He also became the third in League history with multiple Cup-clinching shutouts (consecutive or otherwise).

KUCHEROV, POINT LEAD PLAYOFFS IN POINTS, GOALS ONCE AGAIN
Nikita Kucherov (8-24—32 in 23 GP) and Brayden Point (14-9—23 in 23 GP) topped the NHL in points and goals, respectively, during the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

* Kucherov, who also led all players in points during the 2020 postseason (7-27—34 in 25 GP), became the sixth different player in the NHL’s expansion era (since 1967-68) to lead the Stanley Cup Playoffs in points in consecutive years (outright or tied), joining Wayne Gretzky (3x: 1983-85; 2x: 1987-88), Guy Lafleur (3x: 1977-79), Mario Lemieux (2x: 1991-92), Rick MacLeish (2x: 1974-75) and Phil Esposito (2x: 1969-70).

* Kucherov became just the third player to record 30-plus points in consecutive playoff years, joining NHL legends Lemieux (1991-1992) and Gretzky (1983-1985 & 1987-1988).

* Kucherov’s combined 66 points over the 2020 and 2021 postseasons trail only Gretzky and Lemieux for total points across two consecutive playoff years. Gretzky (60 from 1987-1988 and 52 from 1984-1985) is the only player to record more assists than Kucherov (51) across two postseasons.

* Point finished the playoffs with six more goals than the next closest players after also pacing the 2020 postseason with a franchise-record 14 goals.

* Point had a nine-game goal streak – the second-longest such run in NHL history – and became the first player to record 14-plus goals in consecutive playoff years since Lemieux (1991–1992). The only other players in NHL history to do so are Mike Bossy (1981–1983) and Jari Kurri (1984–1985; 1987–1988).

* Point became the eighth different player in League history to lead the Stanley Cup Playoffs in goals in consecutive years (tied or outright).

WHERE PAT MAROON GOES, SO TOO DOES STANLEY
After winning his first Stanley Cup in 2019 with the Blues and second in 2020 with the LightningPat Maroon claimed the trophy for a third straight year. Already one of eight different players in NHL history to win a championship in consecutive seasons with different teams, Maroon became the first player to win three straight Stanley Cups since multiple players did so with the Islanders dynasty from 1980 to 1983.

* Maroon joined Ed LitzenbergerAb McDonald and Eddie Gerard as the fourth player in NHL history to claim three-plus straight Stanley Cup wins while playing for two different teams over that span. An NHL player has never won three or more consecutive titles with three or more different clubs.

* Maroon’s three Stanley Cup wins are tied for the most among active players, equaling Sidney CrosbyMarc-Andre FleuryNiklas HjalmarssonPatrick KaneDuncan KeithKris LetangEvgeni Malkin and Jonathan Toews.

* Maroon has been on the winning side in each of the last 12 playoff series contested by his teams since the 2019 First Round (8-0 w/ TBL, 4-0 w/ STL). He is one of two players in the last 36 years to be on the roster for 12 consecutive playoff series wins (min. 1 GP in playoff year), following Jaroslav Pouzar (12-0 from 1984-1987, all w/ EDM). Excluding the Canadiens and Islanders dynasties of the 1970s and 1980s, respectively, Maroon and Pouzar are the only players to have won 12 consecutive series.

STAMKOS PLAYS LARGER ROLE IN CUP RUN
After playing just 2:47 in the entire 2020 Stanley Cup PlayoffsLightning captain Steven Stamkos dressed in all 23 games for Tampa Bay in the 2021 postseason where he produced 8-10—18 to rank tied for third in NHL scoring and match a career high.

* Each of the five highest-scoring players in the 2021 playoffs were Tampa Bay skaters. It marked the second postseason in the NHL’s expansion era (since 1967-68) in which each of the League’s top-five scorers were with the same club – the first was in 1970, when Bruins teammates Phil EspositoBobby OrrJohnny BucykJohn McKenzie and Fred Stanfield combined for the feat.

HOME SWEET HOME
Tampa Bay, which hoisted its first Stanley Cup in front of fans at St. Pete Times Forum in 2004, matched a franchise record for most home wins in a single postseason (9; also 2004) and set one for longest home winning streak in a playoff year (6-0).

CONSISTENTLY CONTENDERS: JON COOPER AND JULIEN BRISEBOIS
Tampa Bay’s Jon Cooper and Julien BriseBois have now claimed three championships over the last 10 years as a head coach-general manager tandem, winning two Stanley Cups with the Lightning (2020 & 2021) and one Calder Cup with the AHL’s Norfolk Admirals (2012). Forwards Tyler JohnsonAlex Killorn and Ondrej Palat were also part of each championship.

MORE ON TAMPA BAY’S SECOND STRAIGHT STANLEY CUP

* The Stanley Cup now has been awarded in six different months: March (6x; first in 1918 and last in 1929), April (40x; first in 1920 and last in 1964), May (27x; first in 1965 and last in 1991), June (27x; first in 1992 and last in 2019), September (2020) and for the first time, July.

* Tampa Bay and Andrei Vasilevskiy went 7-0 following a loss during the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs after having an equal record under that criterion in the 2020 postseason en route to the championship. The Lightning have not suffered consecutive playoff losses since 2019, when they were swept by the Blue Jackets in the First Round.

* The Lightning are just the third team in NHL history to bounce back from a sweep with Stanley Cup championships in each of the next two seasons.

MATCH RECAP: Perea Scores First Goal but Lions Fall at Chicago

0

Orlando returns to play on July 17 following brief international break

ORLANDO, Fla. – Orlando City SC (6-3-3, 21 points) dropped a 3-1 decision on the road to Chicago Fire FC (3-7-2, 11 points) on Wednesday night, marking the first time the Lions have fallen in back-to-back regular season matches since August 23 and 31 of the 2019 MLS season.

Despite the result, Club history was made on Wednesday night with midfielder Andrés Perea scoring his first-ever goal as a Lion in the 34th minute. Additionally, Sebas Méndez made his return to the Orlando lineup, entering the match as a second-half substitute after completing 2021 Copa América duties with Ecuador.

The Lions pushed for the equalizer late into the match, including a bicycle kick attempt by Júnior Urso in the 86th minute, but Bobby Shuttleworth came up with the key save.

Head Coach Oscar Pareja:

“Obviously sad with the result. It is difficult after a loss like this, when you concede the three goals, to see all of the good things that the boys did during the game. We are going without excuses and obviously absorb the result with responsibility. But I have to say, also, that the boys fought for the game the whole time, we just couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net today and we paid the expense of this game with some spaces we gave up at the end. We were risking and trying to send some players in front, especially the third goal. But, until then, I think a lot of good things happened. So we will correct it, we will keep going. I think so far nobody has [praised] the boys for what they have achieved, they have to keep going. It is what the game brings you. Right now we just need to come down and recover all of the people that have been out and we will be back.”

Scoring Recap:

34’ Andrés Perea – ORL 1, CHI 0

Orlando got on the board first, with Andrés Perea netting his first goal as a Lion in the 34th minute. After building up on the right side, Homegrown Mikey Halliday sent a low cross in that was tipped by a Fire defender, only to find the feet of Perea who shouldered off his marker and hammered in the opening goal.

45+1’ Boris Sekulić (Álvaro Medrán) – ORL 1, CHI 1

The home team leveled things just before the halftime break, with Álvaro Medrán finding Boris Sekulić on a cross to the back post for the header goal.

72’ Robert Berić (Álvaro Medrán) – CHI 2, ORL 1

Chicago took the lead with 18 minutes remaining, as Medrán’s through ball split the Lions defense to find Berić for the go-ahead goal.

90+6’ Chinonso Offor (Przemysław Frankowski) – CHI 3, ORL 1

With the Lions pushing for a late equalizer, the Fire countered to seal things off with Chinonso Offor scoring the stoppage-time insurance goal.

Match Notes:

With the opening goal in the 34th minute, Andrés Perea scored his first goal as a Lion in the match that also served as his 40th appearance for the Club.

After missing a chunk of the 2021 season with injury, Uri Rosell earned his first start of season, which also came on his 29th birthday.

Sebas Méndez made his return to the Orlando lineup, entering the match as a second-half substitute after completing 2021 Copa América duties with Ecuador.

Entering as a substitute in the 80th minute, Schaumburg, Ill. native Chris Mueller made his third professional appearance in his hometown on Wednesday night.

Playing all 90 minutes, Rodrigo Schlegel made his first start for the Lions since May 22, a 1-0 win over Toronto FC.

Wednesday’s loss marked the first time since Aug. 23 and 31 of 2019 that the Lions have fallen in back-to-back regular-season matches.

Next Match: The Lions will have over a week off from match play, next returning to the pitch to take on Toronto FC on Saturday, July 17.

Sounders FC to Face Tigres UANL in 2021 Leagues Cup Quarterfinals on August 10

Rave Green one of four MLS teams facing off with four Liga MX sides in single-elimination tournament; Season Ticket Members can purchase tickets via exclusive pre-sale on July 13, with general public able to purchase tickets beginning on July 15 (on-sale dates subject to change)

SEATTLE, WASH. – Major League Soccer (MLS) and Liga MX today announced the participants and schedule for the 2021 Leagues Cup, the official annual single-elimination tournament that features clubs from MLS and Liga MX, Mexico’s topflight league. Sounders FC is set to host Tigres UANL at Lumen Field in the Quarterfinals of the tournament on Tuesday, August 10 at 7:00 p.m. PT.

An MLS-run event, Leagues Cup tickets are not included as part of Sounders FC’s Season Ticket Memberships and must be purchased separately. Season Ticket Members still have the first opportunity to secure seats via a Members-only pre-sale beginning Tuesday, July 13, with additional details to be shared directly with Members. The general public may purchase Leagues Cup tickets beginning on Thursday, July 15. These on-sale dates are subject to change. Sounders FC will communicate further details in the coming days.

This marks Sounders FC’s first appearance in Leagues Cup. The Rave Green are 4-8-2 all-time against Liga MX sides, all coming in Concacaf Champions League play. On August 23, 2011, the club’s 1-0 win over Monterrey marked just the second time an MLS side won a match in Mexico. Sounders FC became the first MLS team to eliminate a Mexican club in the Knockout Stage after advancing past Tigres in the quarterfinals of the 2012-2013 tournament, featuring a 3-1 second-leg win with memorable goals from DeAndre Yedlin and Djimi Traore. Sounders FC has also faced off with Liga MX giants Club América, Chivas de Guadalajara and Santos Laguna in Champions League action, in addition to international friendly matches against Chivas, Club Tijuana and Club Necaxa.

In addition to Seattle and Tigres, the qualified participants for this year’s tournament are Liga MX sides Pumas, León and Santos Laguna, joining MLS clubs Sporting Kansas City, Orlando City SC and New York City FC. Should Club León win Liga MX’s Campeón de Campeones 2020-2021 scheduled for July 18, Chivas would replace León as the next best-ranked club in the combined standings, and León would then participate in the 2021 Campeones Cup.

The competition is being broadcast on Univision and ESPN’s networks and digital platforms in the United States, TSN and TVA Sports in Canada, and Televisa and TUDN platforms in Mexico. Beyond the rivalry, Leagues Cup has taken on an increased focus for both MLS and Liga MX clubs. Concacaf recently announced that Leagues Cup will have a qualifying slot to the Concacaf Champions League, starting with the new format in 2023.

The 2021 edition of Leagues Cup features four clubs from each league in a single-elimination format. Liga MX teams joining the 2021 edition of the competition are the top four teams from the overall standings from the 2020-2021 Liga MX season that are not scheduled to participate in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League. Similarly, the participating MLS teams are the top two teams from each conference based on the 2020 MLS regular season standing not scheduled to participate in the 2021 Scotiabank Champions League. As was announced in March of this year, the MLS clubs will host the opening Quarterfinal matches of the tournament.

The tournament, to be played in its entirety in the United States, is scheduled to begin August 10-12 with Quarterfinal matches. The Semifinals are slated for September 14-15, and further details including venues and kickoff times will be announced following the Quarterfinals. The 2021 edition of Leagues Cup will feature four clubs from each league in a single-elimination format. LIGA MX teams joining the 2021 edition of the competition are the top four teams from the overall standings from the 2020-2021 Liga MX season that are not scheduled to participate in the 2021 Scotiabank Concacaf Champions League. Should Club León win LIGA MX’s Campeón de Campeones 2020-2021 scheduled for July 18, Chivas would replace León as the next best-ranked club in the combined standings, and León would then participate in the 2021 Campeones Cup.

Similarly, the participating MLS teams are the top two teams from each conference based on the 2020 MLS regular season standing not scheduled to participate in the 2021 Scotiabank Champions League. By this criteria, the participating MLS clubs in Leagues Cup are Sporting Kansas City, Orlando City SC, Seattle Sounders FC, and New York City FC. As was announced in March of this year, the MLS clubs will host the opening Quarterfinal matches of the tournament.

The tournament, to be played in its entirety in the U.S., is scheduled to begin August 10-12 with Quarterfinal matches. The Semifinals are slated for September 14-15, and further details including venues and kick times will be announced following the quarterfinals. The Leagues Cup Final, to be played in a neutral venue and announced in the coming weeks, is scheduled for September 22. The full Leagues Cup 2021 schedule is below.

Leagues Cup, sponsored by BODYARMOR, MGM Resorts International and Procter & Gamble, will be broadcast on Univision and ESPN networks and digital platforms in the United States, TSN and TVA Sports in Canada, and Televisa and TUDN platforms in Mexico.

Beyond the rivalry, Leagues Cup has taken on an increased focus for both MLS and LIGA MX clubs. Concacaf recently announced that Leagues Cup will have a qualifying slot to the Concacaf Champions League, starting with the new format in 2023, positioning Leagues Cup as an important part of the North American soccer landscape.

Leagues Cup 2021 kicks off five weeks of MLS vs. Liga MX matchups in August and September, with the MLS All-Star Game presented by Target on August 25 and closed out by Campeones Cup the last week of September.

HOUSTON – Houston Dynamo FC begin a three-game stretch away from BBVA Stadium on Wednesday when they face Seattle Sounders FC at Lumen Field. The Dynamo will take a break for the Concacaf Gold Cup and return to action on July 20 against the Vancouver Whitecaps and travel to Northern California on July 24 to face the San Jose Earthquakes.

Houston enters Wednesday’s game with a four-game unbeaten run after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with FC Cincinnati at BBVA Stadium. Tyler Pasher scored the fastest goal of the regular season for the Dynamo and gave Houston a 1-0 lead in the third minute. Houston conceded a few minutes later to split the points with their first rival from the Eastern Conference this season. Pasher will join four additional players at the Concacaf Gold Cup this month and will not be available for selection on Wednesday.

Dynamo midfielder Matias Vera will return to the gameday roster after serving a one-match suspension for yellow card accumulation last Saturday. Here are three key points ahead of today’s game:

  1. MARIC KEY TO UNBEATEN RUN: Dynamo goalkeeper Marko Maric has tallied 15 saves in the last four games to keep Houston unbeaten since May 29. The shot stopper has the fourth most saves in the Western Conference and tallied seven assists in his last outing on the road against Real Salt Lake on June 26. The 25-year-old earned MLSSoccer.com Team of the Week honors after his performance in Utah, a first for the goalkeeper. Maric is also second in the Western Conference in clearances with 14 and looks for his second clean sheet of the season on Wednesday.

  1. DYNAMO ADDS DEPTH: Dynamo navigate Wednesday’s game with a limited roster after five players reporter for international duty on Sunday. Houston will have a pair of new faces following the signing of defender Griffin Dorsey on Monday and the addition of Teenage Hadebe to the roster. Dorsey’s availability is pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate from the Canadian Soccer Association. Dorsey joined the Dynamo in May as a trial player after three seasons with Toronto FC. Hadebe trained with the full team for the first time on Friday, July 2 following a quarantine period due to international travel.

3.      SEATTLE UNBEATEN TO OPEN SEASON:  Seattle is the only unbeaten team left this season and enter Wednesday’s game tied with Sporting Kansas City for the top spot in the Western Conference. The Sounders earned a 1-1 draw on the road against the Colorado Rapids on Sunday evening. Seattle will be without Will Bruin and Carlos Roldan on Wednesday, but Houston will have to contain Raul Ruidiaz and Joao Paulo who combine for 10 goals and six assists this season. Houston will look to snap a five-game losing streak on Wednesday against the Sounders who also navigate a limited roster due to international duty and injuries.
