Rangers place LHP John King on 10-day injured list, recall OF Jason Martin
King would be eligible to return to active roster on July 17
Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club has placed left-handed pitcher John King on the 10-day Injured List, retroactive to July 7, with left shoulder inflammation. To take his place on the active roster, the team has recalled outfielder Jason Martin (#50) from Round Rock.
King has gone 7-5 with a 3.52 ERA (18 ER/46.0 IP) over 27 relief appearances with the Rangers this season, spending the entire campaign on the active roster. He earned his team-high 7th win in his last outing on Tuesday vs. Detroit, and the first date he would be eligible to return to the active roster is July 17.
Martin has batted .162 (6-37) with one home run and 4 RBI over 21 games spanning two stints with the Rangers this season (May 26-June 21 and June 27-29). His last game with Texas was on June 27 vs. Kansas City. He has spent the balance of the season with Triple-A Round Rock, batting .286 with 9 home runs and 24 RBI in 25 games.
Following today’s transactions, the Rangers remain at the 40-man limit on the Major League roster, along with eight players on the 60-day Injured List.
Red Sox announce roster moves
BOSTON, MA – The Boston Red Sox today announced the following roster moves:
- Catcher Kevin Plawecki was reinstated from the 10-day injured list.
- To make room for Plawecki on the active roster, catcher Connor Wong was optioned to Triple-A Worcester following Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Angels.
- Infielder/outfielder Danny Santana was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain, retroactive to July 7.
- To fill Santana’s spot on the active roster, infielder/outfielder Michael Chavis was recalled from Worcester.
Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.
Plawecki, 30, was placed on the 10-day injured list on June 22 (retroactive to June 21) with a left hamstring strain. He has made 18 starts and catcher and one at designated hitter this season, batting .254 (16-for-63) with one home run and a .668 OPS.
Wong, 25, has appeared in four games with Boston and made three starts at catcher, going 3-for-11 (.273) and throwing out the only runner who attempted to steal against him. In 16 games with Worcester this season—his first experience at the Triple-A level—he has hit .148 (9-for-61) with one home run, making 15 starts at catcher and one at second base.
Santana, 30, has appeared in 31 games with Boston, making 11 starts in center field, 10 at first base, and one in left field. The switch hitter has batted .167 (16-for-96) with one double, one triple, three home runs, and 10 RBI.
Chavis, 25, has appeared in 20 games over four stints with Boston this season. He is 12-for-58 (.207) with one home run, four doubles, 11 runs scored, and four RBI, making 10 starts at second base and four at first base. Chavis has played in 24 games with Worcester, batting .263 (25-for-95) with six home runs and an .801 OPS.
Cubs roster moves
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated right-handed pitcher Ryan Tepera from the 10-day injured list and recalled left-handed pitcher Kyle Ryan from Triple-A Iowa. Left-handed pitcher Brad Wieck has been placed on the 10-day injured list (retroactive to July 7) with irregular heartbeat and right-handed pitcher Cory Abbott has been optioned to Iowa.
Tepera, 33, landed on the 10-day injured list on June 29 with a left calf strain. He has posted an 0-2 record with a 3.35 ERA (14 ER/37.2 IP), one save and 14 holds in 37 relief appearances for Chicago this season. He has walked 12, struck out 41, recorded a 0.82 WHIP and limited opponents to a .148 average.
In two seasons with the Cubs starting in 2020, Tepera has a 3.55 ERA (23 ER/58.1 IP) with one save, 16 holds and an 0-2 record in 58 relief appearances. He has pitched in all or part of seven major league seasons with the Blue Jays (2015-19) and Cubs, going 12-14 with a 3.62 ERA (110 ER/273.2 IP), 11 saves, 101 walks, 275 strikeouts and 55 holds in 274 games (one start).
Ryan, 29, is in his fifth stint with the Cubs, having posted a 3.38 ERA (1 ER/2.2 IP) in three relief appearances, with two walks and two strikeouts. He was designated for assignment, May 7, and outrighted to Iowa, May 9, then had a fourth stint with Chicago in June. In 17 outings with Iowa this season, Ryan is 2-0 with one save, a 1.59 ERA (4 ER/22.2 IP) and a .075 WHIP while striking out 24 compared to six walks.
Ryan is in his fourth season with the Cubs organization after signing with the club on December 29, 2017. The lefthander appeared in 18 games in 2020, going 1-0 with a 5.17 ERA (9 ER/15.2 IP), four holds and one save. In 2019, Ryan went 4-2 with a 3.54 ERA (24 ER/61.0 IP) and 14 holds while limiting left-handed hitters to a .226 average (21-for-93) in a career-high and team-leading 73 games.
Wieck, 29, has spun 17.0 scoreless innings in 15 outings for Chicago this season, walking 10, striking out 28 and pitching to a 1.18 WHIP.
Abbott, 25, owns a 6.35 ERA (8 ER/11.1 IP) in five relief appearances for the Cubs this season. In eight starts for Iowa, Abbott is 1-3 with a 5.88 ERA (27 ER/41.1 IP), 18 walks and 64 strikeouts, good for an average of 13.9 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.
Cardinals sign free-agent pitcher Luis García
Oviedo optioned to Memphis (AAA) & Martínez moved to 60-day IL
ST. LOUIS, MO., – The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have signed veteran right-handed pitcher Luis García to a free-agent contract, and that he will join the team for its series-opening game this afternoon in Chicago.
To make room for García on the team’s 26-player active roster, right-handed pitcher Johan Oviedo was optioned to Memphis (AAA). Pitcher Carlos Martínez (right thumb sprain) has been transferred to the 60-day Injured List allowing for García’s addition to the team’s 40-player Major League roster.
García, 34, has spent eight seasons in the majors with Philadelphia (2013-18), Los Angeles Angels (2019) and Texas (2020). The 6-2, 240-pound García has appeared in 326 career games (all but four as a reliever) and has compiled a career mark of 14-17 with a 4.26 ERA in 315.0 innings pitched.
García worked in 60 or more games in three of five seasons from 2015-2019, including a career-high 72 in 2015 for the Phillies, and he logged 59 games in 2018.
The Santo Domingo, D.R. native was signed by the Los Angeles Dodgers as an International free agent in 2004 just days before his 17th birthday and he debuted in the States in 2007 with the Gulf Coast League Dodgers. García has appeared in 258 career games in the minors, most recently with Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
In 18 games for the Scranton/Wilke-Barre RailRiders this season, García was 1-2 with a 3.63 ERA, striking out 19 in 17.1 innings of relief with just three walks allowed. García, who was released by the Yankees on July 6, made his last appearance for the RailRiders on June 26.
García joins recent additions to the Cardinals pitching staff over the past three weeks that have included Wade LeBlanc, Brandon Waddell and Justin Miller.
García has been assigned uniform no. 66.

Sergio Santos scores late equalizer; Union earn point on the road playing one man down
CHESTER, Pa. – In their second meeting this season, the Philadelphia Union took on rival New York Red Bulls away at Red Bull Arena on Thursday, July 8. In their first match of the season (May 15), the Union took three points behind an early goal from Cory Burke to win 1-0. This time around, the Boys in Blue walked away with a point after a 1-1 draw. The Union held the slight lead in possession with 54% but were outshot by New York Red Bulls 6-7. Matt Freese got his first start of the season in Andre Blake’s absence and came up with a big save in the 19th minute when he was left one-on-one with Patryk Klimala but was shown a red card in the second half for denying a goal-scoring opportunity. New York was awarded a penalty that Klimala would put away to take the lead. While playing down a man, the Union still managed to control possession for long stretches as they looked for an equalizer. The moment came in the 85th minute when Olivier Mbazio crossed the ball to Sergio Santos who scored on a well-placed header. It was Santos’ second goal of the MLS season and Mbazio’s first assist. With the draw, the Union now have 20 points and remain in third place in the Eastern Conference.

COLUMBUS — Columbus Crew today announced that the Club has acquired forward Erik Hurtado (pronounced: her-TAH-doe) and the player’s associated budget charge via a trade with Club de Foot Montreal in exchange for $200,000 in 2021 General Allocation Money (GAM). Hurtado, 30, is a nine-year MLS veteran who has made 140 regular-season appearances (60 starts) while scoring 19 goals and providing 11 assists.
“We would like to welcome Erik to Columbus,” said Columbus Crew President & General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko. “Erik is a versatile, powerful forward who has valuable experience in our League and provides us with another option on offense. His addition to our roster will ensure that we have another proven MLS goal scorer to call upon when needed, especially during this particularly congested season.”
Hurtado most recently played for CF Montreal after joining the club in February 16 of this year, making seven appearances (two starts) while registering two goals and one assist. Before his time in Montreal, Hurtado played for Sporting Kansas City from 2019-2020, making 28 regular-season appearances (11 starts) while recording seven tallies.
The forward got his MLS start with Vancouver Whitecaps FC, who selected him in the First Round of the 2013 MLS SuperDraft. Hurtado spent six seasons in Vancouver from 2013-2018, making 105 regular-season appearances (47 starts) while netting 12 goals and providing 10 assists. During his time with Whitecaps FC, Hurtado helped the club win one Canadian Championship (2015) and three Cascadia Cups (2013, 2014, 2016).

Blue Jays complete trade with Reds
The Toronto Blue Jays have received OF Darlin Guzman from the Cincinnati Reds as the player to be named later, completing the January 22 trade of RHP Hector Perez.
Guzman, 20, signed as an international free agent with the Reds in 2017. The native of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, just began his 2021 campaign with the Rookie-level Reds of the Arizona Complex League. The 6-1, 165 lb. left-handed hitter owns a .305 batting average with 26 doubles, 13 triples, 10 home runs, and 69 RBI across 98 career Rookie-level games.
A’s place IF/OF Pinder on 10-Day IL, select IF Wilson
OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s placed infielder/outfielder Chad Pinder on the 10-day injured list with a right hamstring strain and selected infielder Jacob Wilson from Triple-A Las Vegas.
Pinder was hitting .216 with three home runs, 16 runs, 13 RBI, and eight walks with a .627 OPS in 46 games played. He has started games at six different positions (15 in left field, seven in right field, five at second base, four at shortstop, three at third base, and one at DH). He leads American League pinch hitters in RBI and is tied for the lead in hits (5) and extra-base hits (2).
Wilson, 30, joins the A’s for the first time this season. He was originally drafted in the 10th round of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft by St. Louis and signed with the A’s as a minor league free agent on Nov. 10, 2020.
