Pirates sign 2021 18th round selection A.J. Graham

The Pittsburgh Pirates today signed the following player from the 2021 First-Year Player Draft. The announcement was made by Joe DelliCarri, Pirates Senior Director of Amateur Scouting.

Hit .348 with two home runs, 12 stolen bases, a .414 on-base percentage and .512 slugging percentage as a senior at Gaither High School…His mother, Mindy, played volleyball at Ball State University and is a member of the school’s Hall-of-Fame…His father, Darrell, played defensive back in football at Syracuse and Ball State…Was signed by Pirates scout Nick Presto.

 

The Pirates have now signed 18 of their 21 selections from this year’s draft.

Astros’ pitcher Raley disciplined

Houston Astros pitcher Brooks Raley has received a three-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for intentionally throwing at and hitting J.P. Crawford of the Seattle Mariners in the bottom of the eighth inning of Monday night’s game at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Michael Hill, Major League Baseball’s Senior Vice President for On-Field Operations, made the announcement.

 

The suspension of Raley had been scheduled to begin on Friday, when the Astros are to play a road game vs. the San Francisco Giants at Oracle Park. However, Raley has elected to appeal. Thus, the discipline will be held in abeyance until the process is complete.

 

In addition, Astros manager Dusty Baker has received a one-game suspension and an undisclosed fine for Raley’s intentional throwing. Baker will serve his suspension on Friday.

Rangers Select Contracts of RHP’s Drew Anderson and Jharel Cotton from Triple-A Round Rock; Activate RHP Josh Sborz from Paternity List

Anderson and Cotton will be seeking first Major League action this season

 

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today have selected the contracts of right-handed pitchers Drew Anderson (#58) and Jharel Cotton (#45) from Triple-A Round Rock. The club has also activated right-handed pitcher Josh Sborz off the MLB Paternity Leave List.

 

All three pitchers will be in uniform for Friday night’s series opener against the Seattle Mariners, when the Rangers will have 25 active players for the game.

 

Anderson, 27, will be seeking his Rangers debut and first MLB appearance since August 8, 2020 vs. Cleveland while with the Chicago White Sox. He has spent the entirety of the 2021 season at Round Rock (AAA), going 4-5 with a 3.15 ERA (24 ER/68.2 IP) over 14 games/12 starts while averaging a career-best 11.1 strikeouts per 9 innings. Anderson has logged 16.2 scoreless innings spanning his last 3 starts for the Express. Over his last 2 starts, opponents have batted just .128/.163/.149/.312 (6-47) with one extra-base hit (double), 2 walks, and 11 strikeouts. Primarily a starter in his minor league career, Anderson has totaled 10 games/one start in the Majors over four seasons with Philadelphia (2017-19) and Chicago-AL (2020).

 

The 29-year-old Cotton will be seeking his Rangers debut, his first Major League relief appearance, and his first MLB outing overall since a start on September 24, 2017 vs. Texas while a member of the Oakland A’s. The right-hander has gone 11-10 with a 4.95 ERA over 29 games in his MLB career with Oakland from 2016-17, all as a starting pitcher. Cotton has spent the entire season with Round Rock, going 4-0 with a 3.00 ERA (14 ER/42.0 IP) over 24 games/2 starts with a 1.167 WHIP figure, 12.2 strikeouts per 9 innings, and a .205/.286/.301/.587 opponent slash line.

 

Sborz was placed on the Paternity Leave List on Tuesday following the birth of his first child on Monday. He has gone 3-3 with a 4.46 ERA (18 ER/36.1 IP) over 39 relief appearances for the Rangers this season, ranking among staff leaders in games (39) and relief strikeouts (46).

 

Following today’s trade and these transactions, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club’s Major League roster, along with seven players on the 60-day Injured List.

 

JOHN HICKS OUTRIGHTED: Catcher John Hicks, who was designated for assignment on July 23, has been assigned outright to Triple-A Round Rock. Hicks batted .258 with 4 home runs and 7 RBI over 10 games for Texas from June 29-July 22.

Dodgers activate Corey Seager

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers activated infielder Corey Seager from the 60-day injured list.

 

Seager, 26, has been out since May 15 after fracturing his right hand against the Marlins. The North Carolina native has played in 37 games, batting .265 (39-for-147) with four homers and 22 RBI this season. The NLCS and World Series MVP has been with the Dodgers since being drafted in the first round (18th overall) in the 2012 First Year Player Draft out of Northwest Cabarrus High School and has amassed 92 homers and 329 RBI with a .293 batting average in 578 career games with the Dodgers.

Twins recall Charlie Barnes from Triple-A St. Paul

ST. LOUIS, MO – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have recalled left-handed pitcher Charlie Barnes from Triple-A St. Paul.

 

Barnes has made 13 starts for the Saints this season, going 5-3 with a 4.24 ERA (63.2 IP, 30 ER), 23 walks and 54 strikeouts. The 25-year-old has appeared in one game for the Twins this season, making his major league debut with a start in game one of the July 17 doubleheader at Detroit and taking the 1-0 loss after allowing one run on four hits (1 HR) in 4.2 innings pitched, with one walk and one strikeout. Barnes takes the 26-man roster spot vacated by right-handed pitcher Hansel Robles, who was traded to Boston today.

Yankees Acquire LHP Andrew Heaney

The New York Yankees today announced that they have acquired LHP Andrew Heaney and cash considerations from the Los Angeles Angels in exchange for minor league right-handed pitchers Janson Junk and Elvis Peguero.

 

Heaney, 30, went 6-7 with a 5.27 ERA (94.0IP, 92H, 56R/55ER, 31BB, 113K, 16HR) in 18 starts with the Angels in 2021. The left-handed pitcher has allowed 3R-or-fewer in 11 of his 18 starts this season. He has surrendered 29 of his 56 runs in five games (April 2 vs. Chicago-AL, May 12 at Houston, May 18 vs. Cleveland, June 22 vs. San Francisco and June 29 at the Yankees), going 6-3 with a 3.30 ERA (73.2IP, 27ER) in his other 13 starts.

 

Over eight Major League seasons with the Miami Marlins (2014) and Los Angeles Angels (2015-21), he has gone 30-36 with a 4.57 ERA (589.2IP, 584H, 316R/304ER,169BB, 613K, 101HR) in 109 appearances (107 starts). Heaney earned his first Major League win vs. the Yankees on June 30, 2015.

 

The Oklahoma City, Okla., native was originally selected by the Miami Marlins in the first round (ninth overall) of the 2012 First-Year Player Draft out of Oklahoma State University. He was acquired by the Los Angeles Dodgers from Miami with C Austin Barnes, RHP Chris Hatcher and INF Enrique Hernández in exchange for INF Dee Gordon, RHP Dan Haren, INF Miguel Rojas and cash considerations on December 10, 2014. Heaney was then acquired by the Angels from the Dodgers later that day in exchange for INF Howie Kendrick.

 

Junk, 25, was 4-1 with a 1.78 ERA (65.2IP, 43H, 13ER, 20BB, 68K, 6HR) in 14 games (12 starts) with Double-A Somerset this season. Over four minor league seasons in the Yankees organization (2017-19, ’21), the right-handed pitcher was 16-15 with a 3.72 ERA (254.1IP, 244H, 120R/105ER, 99BB, 230K, 25HR) in 64 games (41 starts). The Federal Way, Wash., native was originally drafted by the Yankees in the 22nd round of the 2017 First-Year Player Draft out of Seattle University.

 

Peguero, 24, combined to go 4-1 with a 2.23 ERA (44.1IP, 28H, 14R/11ER, 16BB, 57K, 3HR) in 21 relief appearances with High-A Hudson Valley and Double-A Somerset this season. Over five minor league seasons in the Yankees organization (2016-19, ’21), the right-handed pitcher was 9-17 with a 4.63 ERA (200.1IP, 201H, 135R/103ER, 86BB, 173K, 18HR) in 69 career games (22 starts). The Cotui, D.R., native was signed by the Yankees as a non-drafted free agent on July 2, 2015.

LHP Tony Watson traded to Giants

 

ANAHEIM – The Angels today acquired LHP Sam Selman, RHP Ivan Armstrong and RHP Jose Marte from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for LHP Tony Watson.

 

Selman, 30, pitched in seven games in relief for San Francisco this season and allowed four earned runs across 8.0 innings pitched with eight strikeouts. In 17 games (two starts) this year for Triple-A Sacramento, he was 1-0 with a 4.03 ERA (22.1 IP – 10 ER) and 24 strikeouts. Selman has appeared in 41 career Major League games across parts of three seasons with the Giants.

 

A native of Austin, TX, Selman was originally drafted by the Angels in the 14th round of the 2009 First-Year Player Draft but did not sign. He attended Vanderbilt University and was a second round pick by the Royals in the 2012 Draft.

 

Armstrong, 21, has spent the 2021 season making 20 relief appearances for Single-A San Jose. The right-hander’s 1.88 season ERA (38.1 IP – 8 ER) ranks fifth in the Low-A West division (min. 30 IP), while also registering a 0.991 WHIP and 10.9 SO/9. Originally signed by the Giants in 2017, Armstrong has appeared in 46 career minor league games (20 starts), going 8-7 with a 3.76 ERA (129.1 IP – 54 ER).

 

Marte, 25, appeared in 24 games (all in relief) this season between High-A Eugene and Double-A Richmond, going 2-0 with four saves and a 3.41 ERA (29 IP – 9 ER) and 50 strikeouts. He began the year with Eugene, converting all three save opportunities and did not allow a run across 6.1 innings pitched, before joining Richmond, where he has a 2-0 record and 3.57 ERA (22.2 IP – 9 ER) in 19 appearances. In five minor league seasons, he has gone 15-22 with a 4.66 ERA (295.2 IP – 153 ER) and 304 strikeouts. A native of Santiago, Dominican Republic, he was originally signed by San Francisco as an international free agent on July 2, 2015.

 

Watson, 36, made 36 relief appearances for the Angels this season, going 3-3 with a 4.64 ERA (33 IP – 17 ER) and 25 strikeouts. He was unscored upon in 27 of 36 outings and stranded 21 of 23 inherited runners. Watson signed with the Angels as a free agent on March 29 after attending Spring Training with the Phillies. In 11 Major League seasons, he owns a 43-28 career record, 2.90 ERA (624 IP – 201 ER), 32 saves and 551 strikeouts across 663 games with the Pirates (2011-17), Dodgers (2017), Giants (2018-20) and Angels (2021).
