NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers at Dallas Mavericks

0

The Los Angeles Clippers will play the second leg of a Texas back-to-back on Tuesday night, visiting NBA leading scorer Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks.

Los Angeles scored its third win in the past four games with a 122-106 victory over the Houston Rockets on Monday. Clippers forward Paul George finished with 22 points, eight rebounds and five assists, continuing to shoulder the load with Kawhi Leonard out.

After missing the entirety of last season due to a torn anterior cruciate ligament sustained in the 2021 playoffs, Leonard appeared in two of the Clippers’ first three games this season before returning to the sideline with knee issues.

George, meanwhile, has scored at least 22 points in seven of the past eight games. Los Angeles is 6-2 over that stretch. For the season, George is averaging 24.5 points per game on 45.7 percent shooting from the floor.

Six Clippers who have appeared in at least 10 games are averaging 10.5 points per game or more. Among that group is John Wall at 12.6 points per game.

Wall missed the Monday game due to injury management, but Los Angeles coach Tyronn Lue told reporters afterward that Wall would be available for the Tuesday trip to Dallas.

The Clippers come in to face a Mavericks squad that opened a five-game homestand with a victory over Portland on Saturday. Dallas rebounded from a two-game losing streak to defeat the Trail Blazers 117-112.

Doncic recorded a triple-double of 42 points, 13 rebounds and 10 assists, continuing his impressive opening stretch to the 2022-23 season.

Doncic’s average of 34.3 points per game leads the NBA, outpacing the second-most prolific scorer, Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid, by two points per contest. Doncic also is tied for fifth in the league in assists at 8.1 per game.

As explosive as Doncic has been on offense, Dallas will enter the Tuesday matchup having thrived on defense. The Mavericks are holding opponents to 107.2 points per game, which is ranked fifth in the NBA.

Another statistic of note: Dallas is 7-0 when Josh Green makes a 3-pointer.

The reserve wing, who is averaging 6.3 points per game, is shooting 50 percent from beyond the arc this season. He was 2-for-5 against the Trail Blazers.

As a team, Dallas is attempting an average of 38.3 3-point shots per game and making 13.3 per contest, a rate of 34.8 percent that ranks 18th in the NBA. Los Angeles comes in holding opponents to 34.7 percent from deep, the 10th-best figure in the league.

NBA Preview: Memphis Grizzlies at New Orleans Pelicans

0

The New Orleans Pelicans bounced back from their lowest-scoring game of the season to beat the Houston Rockets 119-106 on Saturday night.

Now the Memphis Grizzlies will try to bounce back from their lowest-scoring game of the year when they visit the Pelicans on Tuesday night.

The Pelicans, who scored just 95 points in an 11-point loss to Portland on Thursday, were much better offensively against the struggling Rockets.

But along the way they saw an 18-point third-quarter lead turn into an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit before they finished strong.

The Pelicans are one game above .500 as they experience ups and downs, but they’re satisfied with where they are overall.

Guard CJ McCollum, New Orleans’ third-leading scorer, has had some hard games shooting the ball of late. In the last four games he has shot 27.3 percent from the floor and 16.7 percent on 3-pointers.

Green is still sorting out his rotation as he incorporates leading scorer Zion Williamson, who missed all of last season because of foot surgery.

If Memphis’ Ja Morant, who was drafted No. 2 after New Orleans made Williamson the No. 1 overall pick in 2019, plays Tuesday, it will be the first meeting between the two young stars in two seasons.

Morant did not play in a 102-92 loss at Washington on Saturday because of ankle soreness, nor did Desmond Bane (toe soreness).

The Grizzlies are 0-3 when Morant or Bane doesn’t play. They’re 9-2 when they both play.

A lot of Washington’s answers came from beyond the arc. The Wizards made a season-high 19 3-pointers on 40 attempts. The Grizzlies couldn’t keep up, making 9 of 28.

In the absence of Memphis’ two leading scorers, who average a combined 53.5 points per game, third-leading scorer Dillon Brooks led the way with 19 points and former Pelican Steven Adams added 12 points and 10 rebounds.

The Grizzlies’ season-low point total marked just the second time this season that they have scored fewer than 100 points.

Memphis is concluding a brief two-game road trip and New Orleans is playing the third game of a six-game homestand.

• Toledo sophomore quarterback Dequan Finn threw for three touchdowns, including the game-winner with 1:18 left to lead Toledo (7-3, 5-1 MAC) to a 28-21 victory over Ball State at the Glass Bowl Tuesday night. With the win, paired with Western Michigan’s loss to Northern Illinois — the Rockets have claimed the MAC West Division Title and will head to the 2022 MAC Football Championship Game on Saturday, December 3rd at Noon ET (ESPN).

• Central Michigan freshman quarterback Bert Emanuel Jr. rushed for 293 yards and the first three touchdowns of his career as Central Michigan rallied from a 17-point deficit to beat Buffalo 31-27 on Wednesday night. The 293 rushing yards are the most by any FBS Quarterback since 2019.

• Ohio (7-3, 5-1 MAC), claimed the Battle of the Bricks victory, defeating Miami, 37-21. Redshirt junior quarterback Kurtis Rourke finished the game 25-for-35 with three passing touchdowns on 362 yards. Rourke surpassed 5,000 career passing yards, putting him among the top five Ohio quarterbacks in program history.

• Eastern Michigan (6-4, 3-3 MAC) used an impressive defensive performance, highlighted by a season-high three interceptions, en route to a 34-28 victory over the University of Akron on Tuesday. The win was Eastern’s sixth of the season and officially qualifies the Green and White for postseason play. It marks the sixth time in program history, and the fifth under ninth-year Head Coach Chris Creighton, that the team has qualified to play in a bowl game. Moreover, it marks bowl eligibility for the fourth consecutive year, which is a program record.

BIG TEN. BIG NEWS.
• With just two weekends remaining in the regular season, all 14 Big Ten teams will take the field this week. The action opens on Saturday at noon ET and features seven conference games and six divisional matchups. The complete schedule can be found to the right.

• Michigan and Ohio State sit atop the East Division standings with matching 7-0 Big Ten records, while Penn State is third at 5-2 in conference play. Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota and Purdue all tie for the West Division lead with 4-3 Big Ten records, followed by Wisconsin in fifth at 3-4.

• Two of the nation’s four remaining undefeated FBS teams call the Big Ten home, as Michigan and Ohio State are both 10-0. The Buckeyes have won 29 straight games against unranked teams, the longest active streak nationally, while the Wolverines are 10-0 for the third time since 1975.

• Three Big Ten teams appear in the AP Poll this week, highlighted by two of the top three teams. Ohio State leads the conference at No. 2, followed by No. 3 Michigan and No. 11 Penn State, while Illinois and Minnesota are each receiving votes. The College Football Playoff will release its latest top 25 rankings on Tuesday, Nov. 15. The Big Ten boasted four teams included in the CFP’s second rankings of the season, which were released on Nov. 8.

• Michigan and Ohio State are two of only three FBS teams in the country with top-10 rankings in both scoring offense and scoring defense. The Wolverines lead the nation defensively (11.2 points per game) and rank fifth offensively (41.4 points per game), while the Buckeyes rank second offensively (46.8 points per game) and seventh defensively (15.6 points per game). The only other team to appear in the top 10 of both categories is Georgia.

• Four additional Big Ten teams rank in the top 25 in terms of scoring defense: Illinois (3rd, 12.5 points per game), Minnesota (4th, 13.1 points per game), Iowa (5th, 13.9 points per game) and Penn State (16th, 19.0 points per game).

• Saturday’s 34-3 victory against Nebraska marked the Wolverines’ fifth win of the season by 30 points or more and the sixth time they have held their opponent to 10 points or fewer. It also marked the third time this season that Michigan has limited its opponent to eight first downs or less and for the third straight week, U-M kept its opponent to one first down or fewer in the third quarter.

• Ohio State’s C.J. Stroud threw for 297 yards on 17-of-28 efficiency and five touchdowns in Ohio State’s 56-14 win over Indiana. The sophomore QB recorded his ninth career game, and fourth this season, with at least five touchdown passes to become the first player in Big Ten history to have consecutive seasons with 30 touchdown passes. His 297 yards put him over 7,000 passing yards for his career, only the fourth Buckeye signal-caller to reach that mark (Bobby Hoying, Art Schlichter, J.T. Barrett).

• Illini running back Chase Brown leads the nation with 1,442 rushing yards this season, with 803 of those yards coming after contact. He also leads the nation in all-purpose yards (1,615) without having return duties. With 98 rushing yards against Purdue on Saturday, Brown moved to second on Illinois’ all-time rushing list with 3,005 yards.

• Eight Big Ten schools – Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio State, Penn State and Purdue – have clinched bowl berths by reaching six victories on the season. The Big Ten will continue to feature the largest bowl lineup in conference history, and the full list of Big Ten postseason destinations can be found on page five.

• Iowa’s Jack Campbell was named a finalist for the 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy on Oct. 26. Now in its 33rd year, the Campbell Trophy is presented annually to the nation’s top football scholar-athlete. The finalists will travel to the 64th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on Dec. 6, where one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 33rd Campbell Trophy and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000. The full list of Big Ten postseason awards candidates can be found on page three.

• Seven Big Ten Conference programs appear in the top 25 of the latest NCAA attendance rankings, including the nation’s top three schools: No. 1 Michigan (110,220 fans per game), No. 2 Penn State (107,749), No. 3 Ohio State (104,359), No. 11 Nebraska (86,732), No. 17 Wisconsin (73,898), No. 20 Michigan State (71,199) and No. 21 Iowa (69,250). Additionally, Big Ten teams own 14 of the top 15 single-game attendance highs this season, including the top 11 spots. Week-by-week attendance details can be found on page five.

• The 2022 Big Ten Football Championship Game will be played at 8 p.m. ET on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium and will be televised nationally on FOX. The winner will earn the Amos Alonzo Stagg Championship Trophy and a chance to play in one of the six bowls that comprise the College Football Playoff, including the Rose Bowl Game.

• This season’s Playoff Semifinals will take place Saturday, December 31, 2022, at the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl and Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl. The Los Angeles region will host the College Football Playoff National Championship on Monday, January 9, 2023, at SoFi Stadium. The College Football Playoff matches the No. 1 ranked team vs. No. 4, and No. 2 vs. No. 3 in semifinal games that rotate annually among six bowl games – the Goodyear Cotton Bowl, Vrbo Fiesta Bowl, Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl, Capital One Orange Bowl, Allstate Sugar Bowl and Rose Bowl Game.

CONFERENCE NEWS & NOTES

Undefeated TCU has clinched a berth in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship. The Horned Frogs are designated as Team A and will occupy
the South bench.

K-State has moved into sole possession of second place at 5-2, while Oklahoma State, Baylor and Texas are in a three-way tie for third at 4-3.
Every Big 12 team still has two conference games remaining.

In Week 12, there is one potential clinch scenario for the second spot in the Championship Game. K-State can clinch the spot with a win AND a Texas loss. Otherwise, the second spot will come down to the final week of games.

After TCU, the next six teams in the standings are still mathematically alive to clinch the second berth in the Big 12 Championship.

TCU is one of just four undefeated teams along with Georgia, Michigan and Ohio State. TCU’s five wins over ranked opponents equals the combined total of the other three (Georgia – 2, Ohio State – 2, Michigan – 1).

No. 4 TCU, No. 18 Texas and No. 19 K-State were ranked in the second CFP Poll (Nov. 8). Updated rankings are released on Tuesday evenings.

FOX Sports’ Big Noon Kickoff will go live from Waco Saturday for the TCU at Baylor matchup. It marks the eighth occasion in seven games this season for a Big 12 television partner pregame show to originate from a Conference game.

The Big 12 is one of three conferences that have 60% of teams bowl eligible: Baylor, Kansas, K-State, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas.

The Big 12 is the only conference in which every team can still reach bowl eligibility.

The Big 12 leads all conferences in scoring (33.0 ppg), total yards (432.2) and rushing yards (178.7) while it is third in passing yards (253.5).

The Big 12’s average home attendance is up over 4,800 from the final 2021 season average. Thus far, an average of 59,877 spectators have attended the 55 home games. Last year’s final average was 55,017.

Every Big 12 team is averaging over 82 percent of stadium capacity and 50 percent of teams are over 100 percent of capacity. The Big 12 has five of the 13 teams nationally that are averaging over stadium capacity.

Home teams have a 21-13 advantage in on-campus Big 12 games. Oklahoma State joins TCU as the only teams still undefeated in home conference
games, as well as all home outings.

Eighty percent of Big 12 teams have had a starting quarterback miss game time due to injury: Baylor, Kansas, K-State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas and Texas Tech.

The Big 12 concluded regular season non-conference games with a .833 (25-5) win percentage, which is second in the FBS while the five losses are tied for the fewest. Every Big 12 team finished with a winning record and the win percentage is the highest since going .900 (27-3) in 2011.

RB Richard Reese only needs 29 more yards to tie the Baylor freshman rushing record, held by Shock Linwood (2013).

Iowa State WR Xavier Hutchinson had 10 receptions for 106 yards at OSU to set a school record of 244 career receptions, surpassing Allen Lazard’s mark of 241.

Kansas’ 525 yards at TTU marked the fifth time this season it has posted 500-plus yards of total offense. It is the most yards in a road game since Sept. 25, 2021 at Duke (530 yards) and the most in a conference game on the road since Oct. 19, 2019 at No. 15 Texas (569 yards).

K-State limited Baylor to three points, the fewest allowed by the Wildcats in series history. It was the fewest allowed by K-State in a Big 12 road game since a 45-0 win at Iowa State in 2003.

The Sooners held West Virginia to 7-of-19 on third-down conversion attempts (37%). It was the seventh time this season they have held an
opponent below a 40% third-down conversion rate.

Freshman Gunnar Gundy’s 83-yard touchdown pass to John Paul Richardson in the second quarter vs. ISU marked the longest pass in the Big 12 this season and OSU’s longest pass since Spencer Sanders hit Tylan Wallace for a 90-yard touchdown at Tulsa on September 14, 2019.

TCU is the first Big 12 team to start the season at 10-0 since Oklahoma State in 2015.

Texas tallied a season-high five sacks and 14 tackles for loss vs. TCU, including eight TFL and three sacks in the first quarter (18 plays).
Texas Tech is 26-of-43 on fourth-down conversions this season, marking the most in a season since at least 2000.

In its first win over Oklahoma since the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2, 2008, West Virginia tallied a season-high four pass breakups to mark its third
consecutive game with at least three PBUs.

The Big 12 Football Weekly Show presented by Old Trapper Beef Jerky is available at 7 p.m. CT each Wednesday through November 30 on Big 12
Now on ESPN+. Chuckie Kempf and Harold Kuntz host the program, which features highlights from previous games, analysis and previews. A media
panel will also make predictions for each week’s games.

Rantanen, Ullmark and Fox Named NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the Week

0

NEW YORK – Colorado Avalanche right wing Mikko Rantanen, Boston Bruins goaltender Linus Ullmark and New York Rangers defenseman Adam Fox have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Nov. 13.

FIRST STAR – MIKKO RANTANEN, RW, COLORADO AVALANCHE

Rantanen compiled 3-4—7, including one game-winning goal as well as the primary assist on Colorado’s other decisive tally, across two contests to power the Avalanche (8-4-1, 17 points) to a perfect week and their fourth straight victory dating to Nov. 4. Rantanen registered 2-1—3, highlighted by his second game-winning goal (also Nov. 4 vs. CBJ) and third multi-goal performance (also Oct. 19 vs. WPG and Nov. 4 vs. CBJ) of the season, in a 5-3 triumph over the Nashville Predators Nov. 10. He then posted 1-3—4, including the primary assist on Cale Makar’s decisive marker, for his 14th career four-point outing and third of the campaign (also Oct. 12 vs. CHI and Nov. 4 vs. CBJ) in a 4-1 victory against the Carolina Hurricanes Nov. 12. The 26-year-old Rantanen, who registered career highs in goals (36), assists (t-56) and points (92) in 2021-22, has recorded 7-7—14 during a five-game point streak dating to Oct. 29. He has appeared in 13 total contests this season, ranking among the League leaders in power-play assists (2nd; 9), points (4th; 23), power-play points (t-4th; 11), goals (t-5th; 10) and shooting percentage (10th; 23.8%).

SECOND STAR – LINUS ULLMARK, G, BOSTON BRUINS

Ullmark went 3-0-0 with a 1.34 goals-against average and .956 save percentage to guide the League-leading Bruins (14-2-0, 28 points) to a 4-0-0 week as they matched their best 16-game start to a season – both in terms of wins and points – in the franchise’s 98-year history (also 1929-30: 14-2-0). Ullmark yielded one goal in each of his first two starts, making 26 saves in a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues Nov. 7 and 31 stops in a 3-1 triumph against the Calgary Flames Nov. 10. He finished the week with 29 saves in a 5-2 win versus the Vancouver Canucks Nov. 13 as Boston set a franchise record and became the eighth NHL team to open a season with nine consecutive victories at home. The 29-year-old Ullmark has made 12 starts (and 13 total appearances) thus far in 2022-23, placing among the top three netminders in wins (1st; 11), goals-against average (2nd; 1.96) and save percentage (3rd; .936). He is the 14th goaltender in League history to win 11 of his first 12 starts of a season and the second to do so with the Bruins, after Ross Brooks in 1973-74 (also 11-1-0).

THIRD STAR – ADAM FOX, D, NEW YORK RANGERS

Fox led the NHL with six assists and eight points (2-6—8), and also scored both of New York’s game-winning goals, as the Rangers (8-6-3, 19 points) went 2-2-0 in four contests. He collected one assist in a 4-3 loss to the New York Islanders Nov. 8, followed by 1-3—4 – his second career four-point outing (also March 25, 2021 at PHI: 0-5—5) – in an 8-2 triumph versus the Detroit Red Wings Nov. 10. Fox then assisted on New York’s lone goal in a 2-1 loss to the Nashville Predators Nov. 12 before closing the week with 1-1—2, including his ninth career game-winning goal, in a 4-1 victory against the Arizona Coyotes Nov. 13. The 24-year-old winner of the 2020-21 James Norris Memorial Trophy has skated in 17 total games this season, placing among the top defensemen in assists (t-1st; 14), points (2nd; 19) and goals (3rd; 5).

A’s outright RHP Daulton Jefferies to Triple-A Las Vegas

0

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s outrighted right-handed pitcher Daulton Jefferies to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today.

Jefferies picked up the win in his first start of the season in 2022 but then lost each of his next seven starts before going on the injured list in mid-May.  He missed the remainder of the season after undergoing thoracic outlet surgery on June 13 and “Tommy John” surgery for the second time in his career on September 9.  The 27-year-old right-hander was 1-7 with a 5.72 ERA and .767 opponents OPS in his eight starts.

The A’s now have three available spots on the 40-man roster.
