The 2021-22 Avalanche posted their best home season in franchise history with a 32-5-4 record (68 points) … Colorado tied Florida for the league lead in home points, ending with the most home points in the NHL for the second straight season after tying Penguins for league lead with 46 in 2020-21 … The Avs are just the third team over the last 30 years to post the league’s best home record in back-to-back seasons (outright or tie), joining the 2016 and 2017 Capitals and the 2007 and 2008 Red Wings … Colorado went 30-3-3 over its final 36 contests at Ball Arena … The Avs posted an 18-game home winning streak from Nov. 11–Jan. 30, the fifth longest run in NHL history … The club had a franchise record 22-game home point streak (20-0-2) from Oct. 30–Feb. 10, the NHL’s longest since 2013- 14 (Anaheim, 20-0-2) … Colorado recently completed its best 60-game home stretch in franchise history going 49-5- 6 (.867) from March 10, 2021 to October 19, 2022.

ALL I DO IS WIN WIN WIN NO MATTER WHAT
The 2021-22 Avalanche equaled the NHL record for the most combined regular season/playoff wins with 72 (56 regular season, 16 playoff), a feat only three teams in NHL history had achieved before … The 2021-22 Avalanche joined the 1995-96 Red Wings, 1983-84 Oilers and 1976-77 Canadiens on that list

RECORD REGULAR SEASON
The 2021-22 Avalanche set a franchise record with 56 wins and 119 points en route to winning their second straight division title and 11th since moving to Denver (13th in franchise history) … It marked the club’s first back-to-back division championships since their NHL-record run of nine straight from 1994-95 to 2002-03 … The Avs clinched the conference’s top spot despite facing a 10-point deficit behind the No. 1 seed on Dec. 3 … The last team to win their conference after overcoming a deficit of 10 or more points was the Rangers in 2014-15 (13) … After sweeping a backto-back from Arizona on Jan. 15, the Avalanche remained in first place in the West over the final 106 days of the regular season … During a span of over two months from Feb 10–April 19, Colorado was first in the entire NHL for all but one day (68 out of 69)

52 2000-01 118 2000-01

ROAD, SWEET ROAD
The Avalanche finished a league-best 9-1 on the road during the 2022 postseason, tied for the fewest road losses by a Stanley Cup champion since 1987 (the 2012 Kings and 1995 Devils were both 10-1) … Colorado earned all four series-clinching wins on the road, including Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final in Tampa Bay … Colorado won its first seven away games to start these playoffs, matching its longest road playoff winning streak in franchise history (1999) and equaling the second longest such streak in NHL history

AINT NO MOUNTAIN HIGH, AINT NO VALLEY LOW
Colorado’s Stanley Cup championship came five years after a last-place finish in 2016-17 …. The Avs became the fifth team in the expansion era (1967-68) to win a title within five years of a last place finish and the first since the 2009 Penguins … Colorado won the Presidents’ Trophy the previous year in 2020-21, becoming the first NHL team to go from worst to first overall in four seasons or less since the Bruins in 1970-71

DOWN BUT NEVER OUT
Ten of the Avalanche’s wins during the 2022 postseason were earned in come-from-behind fashion, including four third-period comebacks … Colorado’s 10 comeback wins tied the 2009 Penguins for the most in NHL history … The Avs trailed in all four of their series-clinching victories, the first team in NHL history to do so

MAGIC YEAR FOR MAKAR
After becoming the first player in franchise history to win the Norris Trophy, Makar followed that up by winning the Conn Smythe as playoff MVP … At 23 years, 239 days, he became the youngest defenseman in 52 years to win the Conn Smythe and just the third overall to do so at age 23 or younger, joining Bobby Orr with the 1970 Bruins (22 years, 51 days) and Serge Savard with the 1969 Canadiens (23 years, 102 days) … Makar won the Conn Smythe just five days after receiving his first Norris Trophy … He became the third player to win both awards in the same season, following Orr in 1970 and Nicklas Lidstrom in 2002 … Makar led the Avalanche and all NHL defensemen with 29 points (8g/21a) in 20 games, the fourth-highest total by a defenseman in Stanley Cup Playoff history … Only Paul Coffey (37) with the 1985 Oilers, Brian Leetch (34) with the 1994 Rangers and Al MacInnis (31) with the 1989 Flames had more.

SUPER JOE ACHIEVES RARE FIRST
General Manager (now President) Joe Sakic, who captained the Avalanche to a pair of titles in 1996 and 2001, became the first individual in league history to win a Stanley Cup as a captain and GM with the same organization … He was just the third to win a championship as a player and general manager with the same franchise, joining Serge Savard of the Canadiens and Milt Schmidt of the Bruins

IN BEDNAR WE TRUST
Jared Bednar is beginning his seventh season as the Avalanche’s head coach … Hired on Aug. 25, 2016, he is the third-longest tenured coach in the NHL behind Jon Cooper (March 25, 2013) and Mike Sullivan (Dec. 12, 2015) … Jared led the 2021-22 Avalanche to their most successful regular season in franchise history (56-19-7, 119 points) and continued that into the postseason with a 16-4 playoff mark en route to capturing the 2022 Stanley Cup … Bednar, who won a Calder Cup with the Lake Erie Monsters in 2016 and a Kelly Cup with the South Carolina Stingrays in 2009, became the first individual to win a championship in the NHL, AHL and ECHL as a head coach … He is the winningest coach in Avalanche history with a 248-172-47 (.581) regular season record … Bednar owns a 40-22-1 (.635) record in 63 postseason games, the best playoff winning percentage among active coaches and the third highest all time (min 50 GP) behind Glen Sather (.706), Toe Blake (.689).

TIP OF CAP
Gabriel Landeskog enters his 12th NHL season and 11th as team captain … Landeskog was the youngest captain in NHL history when he assumed the role at 19 years, 286 days on Sept. 4, 2012, a title he held for four years before Connor McDavid was given the ‘C’ by Edmonton at 19 years, 266 days on Oct. 5, 2016 … Landeskog is the second-longest serving captain in franchise history behind only Joe Sakic (17 seasons, 16 consecutive)

O CAPTAIN, MY CAPTAIN
Jordan Staal scored Carolina’s lone goal at COL (11/12), and he has now scored in back-to-back games (11/10-11/12: 2g) after being held to just one goal through his first 13 contests in 2022-23. Staal scored in consecutive games played twice last season (4/10-4/12: 4g, 4/16-4/21: 3g), and his last goal streak of at least three games came in 2020-21, when he posted a four-game goal/point streak from 2/11-2/17 (5g, 1a). Staal has now tallied 368 points (141g, 227a) in his Hurricanes career and needs one more point to tie Geoff Sanderson (1991-97: 196-173—369) for the 10th-most points in franchise history.

HITTING THEIR STRIDE:
Jordan Staal (1g), Jesper Fast (1a) and Jordan Martinook (1a) connected for the Hurricanes’ only goal against the Avalanche on Saturday, and all three have now found the scoresheet in back-to-back games. Fast (1-1—2, +2) and Martinook (1-1—2, +3) each posted their first multi-point game of the season vs. EDM (11/10), while Staal scored at 19:59 of the second period, just Carolina’s third goal in the final second of any period in the past seven campaigns (Jeff Skinner: 10/28/16 vs. NYR, 3rd; Andrei Svechnikov: 2/18/22 vs. NSH, 2nd). Before this two-game span, the trio had been held scoreless in each of Carolina’s previous five games (10/31-11/9).

HATS OFF
Andrei Svechnikov scored his second hat trick of the season (3g) vs. EDM (11/10), becoming the fifth different player in team history (since relocation) to score multiple hat tricks in a single season (Kevyn Adams: 2005-06; Sami Kapanen: 1997-98; Jeff Skinner: 2013-14, 2015-16; Eric Staal: 2005-06, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2010-11). Both of Svechnikov’s hat tricks came against the Oilers, marking just the second time that any Whalers/Hurricanes player has scored multiple hat tricks against the same opponent in a single season (Kapanen, also vs. EDM). Svechnikov is the first player in franchise history and just the second NHL player since 2018-19 to score two hat tricks in his team’s first 14 games of the season, joining Connor McDavid (EDM, 2022-23), who is also the only other player with multiple hat tricks in 2022-23. Sebastian Aho has also scored a hat trick this season (11/4 vs. BUF: 3g, 1a), and the Hurricanes’ three hat tricks rank tied with the Oilers for the league lead. Before this season, no Hurricanes/Whalers player had ever scored multiple hat tricks prior to the team’s 19th game (Ron Francis, 1985-86), and Hartford/Carolina had never had multiple team hat tricks prior to the team’s 15th game (2007-08: Rod Brind’Amour, Cory Stillman).

NAUGHTY BY NECAS
Martin Necas registered two assists vs. EDM (11/10) for his sixth multi-point game and fourth multi-assist game in 2022-23, both of which are team highs. Necas posted just eight multi-point games and three multi-assist games in 78 contests last season, finishing tied for sixth and tied for eighth on the team in those categories, respectively.

GOAL RUSH
Andrei Svechnikov (3g) posted his fourth multi-point game and team-leading third multi-point game of the season vs. EDM (11/10), with his third goal marking the 100th goal of his NHL/Hurricanes career. He reached the milestone in 297 games, marking the ninth-fewest games needed to reach 100 career goals in franchise history and the fourth-fewest by any player debuting with Carolina since relocation. Selected second overall by Carolina in the 2018 NHL Draft, Svechnikov is also the first player from his draft class to reach the 100-goal plateau. He has earned eight points in his last eight games (10/31-11/12: 4g, 4a), and his 11 goals in 2022-23 rank tied for third in the NHL, trailing only Connor McDavid (EDM, 15) and Bo Horvat (VAN, 12).

Fewest games to 100 career goals, team history (1997-present):
Eric Staal, 2003-07: 268 GP
Jeff Skinner, 2010-2014: 269 GP
Sebastian Aho, 2016-19: 273 GP
Andrei Svechnikov, 2018-22: 297 GP
Erik Cole, 2001-07: 326 GP
Most career goals, 2018 NHL Draft class:
Andrei Svechnikov (Carolina): 100
Brady Tkachuk (OTT): 96
Joel Farabee (PHI): 48
Yegor Sharangovich (NJD): 43
Rasmus Dahlin (BUF): 38

FINNISH FISH
Sebastian Aho tallied two assists against the Oilers on Thursday, marking his fourth multi-point game and third multi-assist game of the season. He has posted 104 multi-point games in his NHL/Hurricanes career, tying Rod Brind’Amour (2000-10) for the fifth-most multipoint games in franchise history. Aho has also recorded 418 points (189g, 229a) in his NHL/Hurricanes career, passing Jeff O’Neill (1995-04: 198-218—416) for the fifth-most points in franchise history. He has tallied 17 points (7g, 10a) this season and ranks second on the team in assists and points.

Most multi-point games, franchise history (1979-present):
Ron Francis (1981-91, 1998-04): 297
Eric Staal (2003-16): 186
Kevin Dineen (1984-91, 1995-99): 132
Pat Verbeek (1989-95): 106
Sebastian Aho (2016-present): 104
Rod Brind’Amour (2000-10): 104

CREASE IS THE WORD
Frederik Andersen was placed on injured reserve due to a lower-body injury, and Pyotr Kochetkov and Antti Raanta will man the crease in his absence. Raanta suffered his second straight regulation loss at COL (11/12) after making a season-high 34 saves on 36 shots against the Panthers on Wednesday. He has now earned a 3-2-1 record, 2.47 goals-against average and team-high .911 save percentage in 2022-23. Kochetkov was recalled from Chicago (AHL) on Tuesday and made his Hurricanes season debut vs. EDM (11/10), stopping 20 of 22 shots to improve to 4-0-0 in his NHL/Hurricanes regular-season career. He is the first goaltender in franchise history, 20th netminder in NHL history and the seventh NHL goaltender in the last 10 seasons (2013-present) to win each of his first four regular-season appearances. Only six goalies have started their careers 5-0-0 since the turn of the century: Antero Nittymaki (PHI, 2004-05), Nolan Schaefer (SJS, 2006), Martin Jones (LAK, 2013), Andersen (ANA, 2013), Charlie Lindgren (MTL, 2016-17) and Spencer Knight (FLA, 2021).

BURNIN’ UP
Brent Burns scored his first power-play goal of the season against the Oilers on Thursday, and he has now tallied seven points (1g, 6a) on the man-advantage this season, tied with Andrei Svechnikov (3g, 4a) for the team high. He ranks third in power-play points among all NHL defensemen in 2022-23, trailing only Cale Makar (COL, 1-8—9) and Rasmus Dahlin (BUF, 4-4—8). The Hurricanes have scored a power-play goal in five of their last seven games (10/31-11/10: 5 PPG), with tallies from four different skaters over that span (Stefan Noesen: 2, Sebastian Aho: 1, Burns: 1, Martin Necas: 1).

HERE TO ASSIST
Jaccob Slavin his third assist of the season vs. EDM (11/10), ending a nine-game scoring drought (10/22-11/9). Slavin has now earned 211 points (36g, 175a) in his NHL/Hurricanes career and needs just one more assist to tie Glen Wesley (1994-08: 176) for the second-most assists by any defenseman in franchise history.

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Golden State Warriors

0

The Golden State Warriors are still trying to find the magic that earned them the NBA title last season and will be looking to get back on the winning track when they host the scratch-and-claw San Antonio Spurs on Monday in San Francisco.

Monday’s contest is the second of a road-home back-to-back and the third game in four nights for the Warriors, who head home after a 122-115 loss at Sacramento on Sunday.

Stephen Curry led Golden State with 27 points in the setback, with Andrew Wiggins adding 26, Jordan Poole hitting for 18 points, Klay Thompson scoring 17 and Draymond Green dishing out 11 assists. Golden State has lost six of its past eight games to fall into 13th place in the Western Conference 13 games into the season.

The Warriors led by 15 points in the first quarter but were down 64-62 at halftime. The game went back and forth in the third quarter, with Golden State up by as many as six before the Kings rallied to go up by seven points on the way to a 98-91 advantage heading to the final period.

A Green layup capped a Warriors rally and pushed Golden State’s advantage to 113-110. But the Kings scored the next nine points to take charge, snapping Golden State’s season-best two-game winning streak. The Warriors had 18 turnovers in the loss.

Thompson, who has been held out for the backend of the Warriors’ last two sets of back-to-backs, likely won’t play Monday.

The Spurs travel to the Bay Area after two off days and for the first game of a five-games-in-seven-days road trip. San Antonio’s most recent outing was a 111-93 win over Milwaukee on Friday at home. The victory was over a short-handed Bucks squad and snapped a five-game losing skid for the Spurs.

Keldon Johnson racked up in 29 points in the win, with Devin Vassell adding 22 points, Jakob Poeltl amassing 15 points and 10 rebounds, Jeremy Sochan and Doug McDermott scoring 10 points each and Charles Bassey grabbing 14 rebounds.

The Spurs led by seven points heading into the final quarter but put the game out of reach via a 16-5 run over the first half of the period. Johnson had seven points and Vassell hit for five in that decisive stretch.

San Antonio is a team with role players rather than marquee attractions and, according to Johnson, understands that it needs to share the ball to be at its best.

After Monday’s game with the Warriors, the Spurs play in Portland on Tuesday, in Sacramento on Thursday and in Los Angeles against the Clippers and Lakers on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.

The Milwaukee Bucks will seek a little payback on Monday when they host the Atlanta Hawks, the team that tagged them with their first loss of the season.

Milwaukee won its first nine games, one of them coming against Atlanta, before the Hawks tripped the Bucks last Monday. Since then Milwaukee has split two games, including a 111-93 loss to San Antonio on Friday, while Atlanta has lost two of three, including Saturday’s 121-109 defeat to Philadelphia.

Milwaukee is dealing with health issues that have thinned the roster. The Bucks played Friday without Giannis Antetokounmpo (left knee soreness), Jrue Holiday (right ankle sprain), Khris Middleton (left wrist), Pat Connaughton (right calf strain), Grayson Allen (illness), Joe Ingles (left knee) and A.J. Green (nasal surgery).

Allen was in the starting lineup when he was scratched minutes before tipoff because of a non-COVID illness. Conspiracy theorists had a field day, as Allen has been the subject of trade rumors.

Jordan Nwora made his first start of the season in place of Allen and scored eight points. MarJon Beauchamp got his third start at forward and scored eight. Veteran Bobby Portis started for the third time and had 16 points and 12 rebounds.

Brook Lopez had two more blocks on Friday and leads the league with 2.7 per game.

Atlanta had an outstanding defensive effort when they beat the Bucks the first time around. That aspect of the game did not show up against the Sixers, who got a season-high 42 points from Joel Embiid.

Turnovers have not been a real problem for the Hawks this season. They commit 13.1 turnovers per game, third-fewest in the league.

Trae Young had 27 points and 11 assists against the Sixers. Young has scored 25-plus points in 155 games and passed Pete Maravich for the seventh-most games with 25-plus points in franchise history.

The Hawks were without reserve center Onyeka Okongwu, who missed the game for personal reasons. But veteran Bogdan Bogdanovic, who has missed the first 13 games because of a knee injury, worked out before the game and is getting closer to returning.

Milwaukee beat Atlanta 123-115 on Oct. 29 before Atlanta won 117-98 last Monday. The two teams will play for the final time on Jan. 11 in The Milwaukee Bucks will seek a little payback on Monday when they host the Atlanta Hawks, the team that tagged them with their first loss of the season.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers at Houston Rockets

0

The Los Angeles Clippers seemed convinced that, even in the prolonged and ongoing absence of Kawhi Leonard, they had discovered the path to consistent success.

With nine members of the rotation. excluding Leonard. averaging more than 17 minutes per game, the Clippers had come to rely upon their depth to wear down the opposition. Their multitude of options served them well on both ends of the court during a stretch of five wins over six games before the Brooklyn Nets pulled away late for a 110-95 victory on Saturday.

The Clippers, who will visit the Houston Rockets on Monday for the third matchup between the teams already this season, must recommit to playing in a manner that best suits their roster without Leonard, who remains sidelined with right knee injury management.

Leonard has participated in only two games this season with the last one coming on Oct. 23 against the Phoenix Suns.

Against the Nets, star Paul George missed 16 of 21 shots yet scored a team-high 17 points. The Clippers got 16 points apiece from Norman Powell and Ivica Zubac, with that duo combining to shoot a robust 12 of 22 from the floor. But Reggie Jackson, Luke Kennard, Terance Mann and Nicolas Batum combined to shoot 6 of 20.

Much like the Clippers, the Rockets fell apart late on Saturday, surrendering a 33-point fourth quarter on the road to the New Orleans Pelicans in a 119-106 loss. Houston led by one point entering the final quarter, led by as many as eight in the fourth, and remained tied with just under three minutes remaining before allowing the Pelicans to close the game on a 13-0 run.

Late losses have been a familiar refrain for the Rockets, who have shown a tendency to rally from sizable deficits only to fall short at the final buzzer. The Pelicans led by as many as 18 points in the second half before the Rockets mustered the will to fight back behind their bench.

What the Rockets haven’t discovered is how to finish the job.

NBA Preview: Phoenix Suns at Miami Heat

0

The Phoenix Suns have played two straight games without injured point guard Chris Paul.

They may be line to be without Paul again on Monday when they visit the Miami Heat.

Paul, who leads the Suns in assists (9.4) and steals (1.7), is listed as day-to-day with a sore right heel. His presence was surely missed on Friday night, when the Suns dropped a 114-97 decision at the Orlando Magic.

The Suns shot just 40.0 percent from the field, and the Magic made 52.4 percent of their shot attempts.

Without Paul, Suns star Devin Booker made just 6-of-19 shots against Orlando.

The other issue for Suns so far is that their 2-3 road record pales in comparison to their 6-1 home mark.

Booker averages a team-best 26.7 points per game, is making 38.4 percent of his 3-point attempts, 86.8 percent on free throws and 47.5 percent on field goals overall.

Deandre Ayton is averaging 14.5 points and leads the Suns in rebounds (7.3).

Mikal Bridges is the Suns’ second-leading scorer (15.7). He is shooting 44.1 percent on 3-pointers, 88.6 on free throws and 55.5 percent from the floor overall.

Cameron Payne is another key Suns player to watch as he starts when Paul sits. For the season, Payne is averaging 12.1 points and 3.7 assists.

However in his two starts with Paul as a spectator, Payne is averaging 22.5 points and 6.0 assists.

Miami, just 5-4 at home this season, is coming off of two straight wins over the visiting Charlotte Hornets.

Heat guard Tyler Herro has missed three straight games due to a sprained left ankle. But in Miami’s 132-115 win over the Hornets, Max Strus stepped up in place of Herro and scored 31 points.

The Heat, who have struggled for much of this season, might have found something in Saturday’s win. They shot 52.7 percent from the floor, including 16 of 41 from 3-point range (39.0 percent).

In addition to Strus, who was 8 of 14 on 3-pointers, the Heat also received 24 points from Bam Adebayo and 20 points each from Jimmy Butler and Gabe Vincent.

Butler and Kyle Lowry each had eight assists for Miami.

Adebayo, who added a game-high 15 rebounds and four assists, was also pleased.

Butler leads Miami in scoring (22.1) and assists (6.1). He also ranks second in rebounds (6.5).

Adebayo leads the team in rebounds (9.1) and ranks third in scoring (18.2). Strus is fourth in scoring (15.5), even though he has started only six of his 13 games.

Lowry is averaging 13.0 points and ranks second on the team in assists (5.8).
