0

FLUSHING N.Y., – The New York Mets announced today that the club has claimed right-handed pitcher Stephen Ridings [RIY-deengs] off waivers from the New York Yankees.

Ridings, 27, saw his first major league action in 2021 with the Yankees, making five relief appearances and posting a 1.80 ERA (1 ER/5.0 IP) with seven strikeouts and two walks.

The Huntington, New York native spent the entire 2022 season on the 60-day Injured List with a right shoulder impingement and threw 2.0 scoreless innings with four strikeouts across two rehab outings in September.

In 71 outings (19 starts) across five minor league seasons with the Cubs, Royals and Yankees organizations, the 6-foot, 8-inch righty is 12-8 with a 4.19 ERA (67 ER/144.0 IP) and 204 strikeouts.

The Phillies have selected the contract of outfielder Johan Rojas to the 40-man roster, Phillies President of Baseball Operations David Dombrowski announced today.

Rojas, 22, split the 2022 season between high-A Jersey Shore (70 games) and double-A Reading (60 games) while combining to post a .244/.309/.354 slash line with 20 doubles, seven triples, seven homers, 38 RBI, 82 runs and 62 stolen bases in 67 attempts (92.5%). He finished the regular season with Reading, where he hit .260 with a .720 OPS in 264 plate appearances. Rojas’ 62 steals overall ranked eighth among all minor league players in 2022 and were the most by a Phillies minor leaguer since 2009 (Anthony Gose, 76). The right-handed hitter began the season by stealing 31 consecutive bases without being caught, a streak which ended on June 22.

Following this year’s regular season, Rojas appeared in 12 games with Surprise in the Arizona Fall League, where he posted a .310/.423/.452 slash line in 52 plate appearances with 13 steals in as many attempts. His final game with Surprise, recent winners of the AFL championship, was on Oct. 24.

In 354 career minor league games, Rojas has hit .267 with a .725 OPS and is 129-for-157 (82.2%) in stolen base attempts. He has appeared at all three outfield positions but has primarily played center field. Rojas, who was born in the Dominican Republic, was originally signed by the Phillies as an amateur free agent in January 2018. He is ranked as the No. 5 Phillies prospect, according to MLB.com.

With the addition of Rojas, the club’s 40-man roster currently stands at 37 players.

The last time that the Devils earned a nine-game winning streak was Nov. 17, 2007, to Dec. 7, 2007 (9-0-0).
The Devils highest winning streaks all-time:

Length Season DATES END OF SEASON RESULT
13 2000-01 2/26/01-3/23/01 Lost in 7 games, Stanley Cup final
11 2005-06 3/28/06-4/18/06 Lost in Round 2
9 2005-06 1/3/06-1/21/06 Lost in Round 2
9 2007-08 11/17/07-12/7/07 Lost in Round 1
9 2022-23 10/25-PRESENT TBD

The last time that the Devils won 10 consecutive games was in 2005-06 via Mar. 28, 2006, to Apr. 16, which extended to 11 games. That 11-game winning streak was also earned in the team’s last 11 regular-season games for the 2005-06 campaign. The Devils enter Tuesday’s contest with an 11-0-0 record when captain Nico Hischier records a point in a game this season. The last time the Devils were in first place for their division after the team’s first 15 games to start a season was in Nov. of 2017, per NHL Pr.

Jersey’s team is 7-0-0 vs Canadian-based teams this season, and embarks on its second three-game Canadian road trip this season. The Devils swept Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver via Nov. 1, 2022, to Nov. 5, which marked the first time since Dec. of 1996, that the Devils earned a three-game sweep on a Canadian road trip against those teams.

The Devils’ nine-game winning streak is the longest active winning streak in the NHL and is tied with the Golden Knights for the league’s longest streak for the season:
Vegas: Oct. 24, 2022, to Nov. 10 (9-0-0).

The Devils are currently riding a five-game winning on the road via Oct. 20, 2022, to Nov. 5. The last time the team experienced a five-game winning streak away from the Rock was Oct. 9, 2017, to Nov. 1, 2017. The last time that the Devils earned a six-game winning streak on the road was Jan. 13, 2017 to Feb. 4, 2017. The team’s longest winning streak on the road in a single season is 10 games:
Feb. 27, 2001, to Apr. 7, 2001 (10-0-0).

While the Devils aim for a 10-game winnings streak, head coach Lindy Ruff finds himself in familiar territory. Ruff’s longest winning streak as a head coach is 10 games, which was earned via Oct. 4, 2006, to Oct. 26. Ruff was the HC of Buffalo and it was also the earned in the team’s first ten games of the season.

As of Nov. 14, the Devils ranked first in the NHL in shots against, per game at 24.4, while Carolina ranks second at 26.3. Additionally, as Nov. 14, the Devils are ranked second for shots on goal, per game, at 37.1 behind the Florida Panthers (40.3). Since 1994-95, the franchise’s first Stanley Cup championship, the Devils have finished a season averaging under 25 shots against, per game seven times:

23.7 1997-98
24.7 1998-99
24.7 2000-01
23.2 2001-02
23.6 2002-03
24.4 2003-04
23.1 2012-13

The team clinched a playoff berth in six of those seasons, while winning a Stanley Cup championship in 2002-03, plus advancing to the Stanley Cup final in 2000-01. The team didn’t clinch a playoff berth in the shortened (lockout year) in 2012-13. Since 1994-95, the team’s highest shots per game total is 33.1, which was earned in 1999-00. The team then won its second Stanley Cup championship. The Devils earned their two-fastest goals scored in a single game for franchise history on Thursday, Nov. 3, vs Edmonton, after Ryan Graves (16:45, 3rd per.) and Jesper Bratt (16:52, 3rd per.) scored seven seconds apart. The previous record was Apr. 6, 2001, when John Madden (16:31, 1st per.) and Patrik Elias (16:39, 1st per.) scored eight seconds apart in a 5-2 win vs Boston. The Devils officially announced and revealed their second-ever Adidas Reverse Retro sweater, which turns back the clock and nods to the franchise’s Colorado roots. Side note…On Oct. 12, 2022, Andy Greene officially signed a one-day contract and retired as a Devil. The Trenton, Michigan native’s 923 regular-season games played ranks seventh all-time in franchise history, and third all-time for defensemen in franchise history.

Sacramento State Women’s Basketball claims first win of season with 73-63 victory over Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Senior Kahlaijah Dean finished with a Sacramento State career-high 27 points and junior Isnelle Natabou added 23 more as the visiting Hornets rallied from a nine-point deficit to earn their first win of the season, 73-63, over Santa Clara on Monday night at the Leavey Center in Santa Clara, Calif.

The win improved Sacramento State to 1-1 overall on the year in the first meeting between the two programs since 2011. The Broncos fell to 1-2 overall on the season, suffering their second consecutive loss.

Dean, who had 11 games with 20-or-more points and three of at least 30 points during her four years at Oakland University, finished 11-of-15 from the field en route to a new Hornet career high, adding nine assists and six rebounds in 36 minutes.

Natabou, who finished with 19 points and 20 rebounds two days ago, added a 10-of-14 shooting night from the field en route to her season-high 23 points, topping the 20-point plateau for the seventh time in her career. She added seven rebounds in 33 minutes and is shooting a robust 19-for-26 (.731) from the field overall in her first two games of the season.

Dean’s 27 points were the most by a Hornet since Lianna Tillman finished with 35 at Idaho on Feb. 24 of last season, while Natabou posted her highest point total since scoring 25 against Montana on March 4 of last year. Monday marked the first time that Sacramento State had two players with 20-or-more points since that game against the Grizzlies as Tillman added 21 points to Natabou’s total.

Not to be outdone, sophomore Katie Peneueta joined in the fun thanks to her second consecutive double-digit scoring performance while completing her first career double-double, scoring 14 points on 4-of-7 from beyond the arc and adding a career-high 10 rebounds to go with a pair of blocks while playing all 40 minutes.

Trailing by four after the first quarter and falling behind by nine points with 7:53 remaining in the second quarter, Sacramento State began to methodically chip away at the Santa Clara lead. Freshman Madison Butcher ended a run that saw Dean and Natabou score the team’s first 20 points by draining a three-pointer, kick-starting a 16-6 run over the final seven minutes to take a 38-33 lead at the break.

Peneueta scored nine of those 16 points down the stretch, draining a trio of three-pointers in the final two minutes for the Hornets’ first lead of the night — one they would not relinquish — as Sacramento State shot 57 percent in the opening 20 minutes and posting 11 assists on 16 made baskets.

The two teams traded baskets to start the third, with the Broncos eventually cutting the deficit down to four, but the Hornets hit four of the next five field goals to rebuild the lead back to nine with 6:43 to play in the period. A quick 6-0 burst by Santa Clara whittled that advantage back down to three, but back-to-back baskets by Dean pushed the lead back to eight with one quarter remaining.

Both teams came out firing to start the fourth with the Broncos closing to within four at the media timeout, but Santa Clara went cold from the floor, hitting just two field goals the rest of the way while the Hornets closed the game on a 10-4 run en route to the 10-point victory.

After shooting nearly 47 percent on Saturday against UC Irvine, Sacramento State finished Monday night shooting nearly 54 percent against the Broncos — including a 62 percent clip in the third quarter — notching its highest single-game shooting performance since hitting 29-of-48 (.604) at Northern Arizona on Feb. 3 last season. The Hornets also finished with a 35-29 advantage on the glass, outrebounding each of its first two opponents on the year, and ended the night with 17 assists on 29 makes from the field.

Sacramento State returns to the friendly confines of The Nest on Saturday (Nov. 19) at 7:30 p.m., hosting UC Santa Barbara on Alumni Night.

NHL Morning Skate – Nov. 15, 2022

0

* Pyotr Kochetkov recorded his fifth straight win to begin his career by way of securing his first NHL shutout. Only three goaltenders in the past 27 years have posted more consecutive victories to start their career: Martin JonesSpencer Knight and Frederik Andersen.

* Mikko Rantanen boosted his season totals at home to 9-11—20 (7 GP) and became the first skater to reach 20 points in seven or fewer home contests since Mario Lemieux in 1995-96.

* A number of winning, point and assist streaks will be on the line Tuesday on a nine-game slate, which will also feature the Penguins, Blue Jackets and Ducks each hosting their Hockey Fights Cancer Night.

KOCHETKOV REMAINS UNDEFEATED TO START HIS CAREER
Pyotr Kochetkov made 27 saves for his first NHL shutout and remained undefeated to begin his career as he backstopped the Hurricanes (10-5-1, 21 points) to their 10th win of 2022-23. Carolina, which sits third in the Metropolitan Division, has required fewer games to reach the mark in a campaign only three times in franchise history (11 GP in 2021-22, 13 GP in 2020-21 & 2005-06).

* Kochetkov (23 years, 142 days) became the third goaltender in Hurricanes/Whalers history to record a shutout prior to his 24th birthday, joining Cam Ward (5) and Eric Fichaud (1).

PAGEAU POTS GAME WINNER FOR ISLANDERS AS BARZAL ADDS TO ASSIST TOTAL

Mathew Barzal (0-2—2) factored on the Islanders’ game-opening and winning goal – which was scored by former Senators forward and Ottawa, Ont., native, Jean-Gabriel Pageau (1-0—1) – to help New York (11-6-0, 22 points) improve to 9-1-0 in its past 10 games against Ottawa.

* Barzal (0-18—18) has yet to score this season, but his 18 assists rank third in the NHL behind only Nathan MacKinnon (20) and Leon Draisaitl (19). Only one player in Islanders history has recorded more helpers prior to their first goal of a campaign, defenseman Gary Nylund (21 in 1989-90).

BLUES, FLAMES SKATE TO COMEBACK WINS MONDAY
The Blues and Flames each skated to comeback wins Monday to earn their third and second straight victories, respectively. St. Louis and Calgary’s current success comes on the back of eight and seven consecutive losses, respectively.

* The Blues’ past three contests since ending their skid have included fending off three game-tying goals against the Sharks before posting back-to-back comeback wins versus the Golden Knights and Avalanche – the club is also 1-0 so far on the road during their mom’s tripJordan Binnington, who has been in net for each of those contests and has moved within four of his 100th-career win, made 45 saves – his third-highest single-game save total. The last St. Louis goaltender to make more stops in a road victory was Chris Mason on Nov. 25, 2008 (47).

* A pair of Flames forwards hit career milestones Monday as Jonathan Huberdeau (1-0—1) reached the 200-goal mark during the opening frame which saw Calgary score four – they are the only team this season to score four-plus goals in the first period multiple times. Meanwhile, Nazem Kadri recorded two helpers to reach 300 career assists in Calgary’s highest-scoring game in 2022-23.

RANTANEN SNAGS THE SPOTLIGHT IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES

CAN STREAKS BE EXTENDED TUESDAY? TUNE IN TO FIND OUT
A nine-game Tuesday will put a number of streaks on the line, including the Devils’ nine-game winning streak, Mitchell Marner and Quinn Hughes’ assist streak, as well as a run of six straight victories for Golden Knights rookie goaltender Logan Thompson.

* Marner enters Tuesday with a nine-game assist and point streak (2-11—13), which trails only Leon Draisaitl (11 GP) and Connor McDavid (10 GP) for the longest active point streaks among all players. Only three players in Maple Leafs history have extended their assist streak to double digits, a list Marner is already on: Norm Ullman (12 GP in 1970-71), Darryl Sittler (11 GP in 1976-77) and Marner (10 GP in 2017-18).

* Hughes will aim to extend his career-high point streak to eight games when the Canucks visit the Sabres (0-9—9). Only 10 players in franchise history have recorded a longer assist streak than Hughes’ seven-contest run, with two of those being defensemen: Dennis Kearns (11 GP in 1976-77 & 8 GP in 1975-76) and Doug Lidster (8 GP in 1986-87).

* The Devils can become the first club in 2022-23 to record a double-digit winning streak with a victory against the Canadiens on Tuesday. New Jersey, which has earned victories in front of Akira SchmidMackenzie Blackwood and Vitek Vanecek within their current run, can become the fourth team in NHL history to post a winning streak of 10-plus games while using at least three goaltenders. They would join 1985-86 Flyers (13 GP; Bob Froese, Darren Jensen & Pelle Lindbergh), 1982-83 Flyers (10 GP; Bob Froese, Pelle Lindbergh Rick St. Croix) and the 1972-73 Bruins (10 GP; Eddie JohnstonJacques Plante & Ross Brooks).

* Thompson is 6-0-0 in his past six games and can surpass Linus Ullmark (6-0-0 from Oct. 20 – Nov. 3) for the longest run by a goaltender this season should he and the Golden Knights find the win column Tuesday. Thompson can also match Malcolm Subban (7 GP in 2017-18) for the longest win streak by a rookie netminder in franchise history.

NBA Preview: Brooklyn Nets at Sacramento Kings

0

Two teams that have removed their disguises since Halloween and reverted back to playoff-contending basketball squads hook up Tuesday when the Brooklyn Nets complete a three-game California by visiting the Sacramento Kings.

The Nets were 1-5 and Kings 1-4 before Halloween victories sent them upward in the standings, with Brooklyn winning five of eight and Sacramento five of seven.

The Nets saw a two-game winning streak slip away in a 116-103 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday in a game in which the visitors couldn’t get a handle on versatile big man Anthony Davis, who dominated with 37 points and 18 rebounds.

The Kings have a similar talent in Domantas Sabonis, who not only posted a 21-point, 10-rebound double-double in a head-to-head with Davis on Friday, he followed that with 26 points and 22 rebounds in a 122-115 home win over the Golden State Warriors on Monday.

Acquired by the Kings from the Indiana Pacers last February, Sabonis averaged 14.4 points and 9.2 rebounds in Sacramento’s 1-4 start. But his numbers since then – 20.4 points, 12.9 rebounds – have been difference-making.

As a career-long Eastern Conference player before the February trade, Sabonis has plenty of history against the Nets. He recorded triple-doubles in three of his last six games against them, including one at Indiana in January in which Kevin Durant stole the show with 39 points in a 129-121 Brooklyn win.

Like Sabonis against the Nets in the East, Durant had more than his fair share of success against the Kings while a 12-year Western Conference player for the Seattle SuperSonics, Oklahoma City Thunder and Warriors before joining Brooklyn in 2020.

He’s never faced the Kings as a member of the Nets. In his last seven games against the Kings, all victories, Durant averaged 30.7 points, shot 54 percent and recorded two double-doubles.

Durant has scored at least 26 points in all 14 Nets games this season. He had 27 in a trip-opening 110-95 win over the Los Angeles Clippers Saturday, before putting up 31 in Sunday’s loss to the Lakers.

His season-opening run of 26-point games is the longest since Michael Jordan began the 1989 season with 16.

Nets coach Jacque Vaughn thought his team ran out of gas against the Lakers in a game in which Kyrie Irving (suspension), Ben Simmons (sore left knee), Nic Claxton (irritation in left eye) and Seth Curry (rest) were unavailable on the second day of a back-to-back.

All except Irving are expected back in Sacramento. The Nets are 4-2 during Irving’s team-imposed suspension.

Attempting to complete a comeback after fighting an uphill battle from the opening tip, Vaughn said he took a calculated risk and played Durant the first 20 minutes of the second half against the Lakers. He wound up going 38 minutes.

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Portland Trail Blazers

0

The Portland Trail Blazers will look to continue their strong start to the season when they open a three-game homestand against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night.

Portland has won nine of its first 13 games to sit in a tie for first place with Denver in the Western Conference. The start is even more impressive due to six-time All-Star guard Damian Lillard missing five contests because of a calf strain.

Lillard was in fine form on Saturday, putting up 29 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds, but the Trail Blazers lost 117-112 to the Dallas Mavericks to complete a 4-2 trip. The excursion included victories over the Phoenix Suns and Miami Heat.

Lillard is averaging 28.6 points as one of three Portland players topping 20 per game. Anfernee Simons is averaging 22.3 and Jerami Grant 20.7.

Grant scored a season-best 37 on 13-of-22 shooting against Dallas. He has tallied at least 23 in five of the past six games and is averaging 25.7 during that stretch.

Big man Jusuf Nurkic (adductor soreness) is listed as questionable for Tuesday after missing the previous three games.

The Trail Blazers have routinely dealt with injuries, as Josh Hart is the lone starter who has played all 13 games. Reserves Drew Eubanks and Nassir Little also haven’t missed any time.

Lillard likes how the team has dealt with adversity.

Not much went right for the Spurs on Monday as they were drubbed 132-95 by the Golden State Warriors at San Francisco in the opener of a five-game trip.

San Antonio was outscored 99-69 over the final three quarters. The Spurs shot just 25 percent (10 of 40) from 3-point range while Golden State knocked down 51.1 percent from deep (23 of 45).

Tre Jones missed his first game of the season due to a stomach illness, and San Antonio badly missed the third-year pro, who is averaging 12.3 points and a team-high 6.6 assists.

Spurs forward Jeremy Sochan, picked ninth overall in this year’s draft, was tabbed to start at point guard and had 12 points and seven rebounds in 24 1/2 minutes but committed three turnovers without recording an assist.

Keldon Johnson scored 15 points and Keita Bates-Diop added 12 for San Antonio, which has dropped six of its past seven games after starting 5-2.

The Spurs swept all four meetings with the Trail Blazers last season by an average of 27 points.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks at Utah Jazz

0

The Utah Jazz have a couple of things going for them as they return to Salt Lake City to host the New York Knicks on Tuesday night after a three-game Eastern road trip.

For one thing, they won’t have to face Joel Embiid. The 76ers center had the performance of a lifetime on Sunday en route to leading Philadelphia past Utah 105-98. Embiid scored a career-high 59 points, hitting 19 of 28 shots and 20 of 24 free throws, while also grabbing 11 rebounds, dishing out eight assists and blocking seven shots.

Another bit of good news for the Jazz: They return to their cozy confines at Vivint Arena, where they’ve gone 5-0 this season.

Even with the Sixers loss and their setback in Washington the night before, the Jazz still have one of the best records in the Western Conference (10-5) as they prepare for their first home game in a week. The back-to-back losses this weekend marked the first time Utah has lost consecutive contests through 15 games.

Spacing and decision-making are two areas Hardy blamed for the loss in Philadelphia. The Jazz had 17 turnovers while getting 14 of their shots blocked.

Utah, which has only played one-third of its games at home, will host New York and Phoenix before returning to the road again this weekend.

The Knicks kick off a rough stretch Tuesday night, as they’ll play five away games out West in seven nights. The road trip includes games against Utah, Denver, Golden State, Phoenix and Oklahoma City.

New York dropped a 145-135 shootout at home to the Thunder on Sunday. The Knicks allowed OKC to shoot 62.5 percent overall, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scoring 37 points and Josh Giddey racking up a triple-double of 24 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds.

The Thunder’s huge offensive output nullified big nights from Cam Reddish, who logged a season-high 26 points, Julius Randle (25) and Immanuel Quickley (24). Of note, RJ Barrett didn’t play in the final 21 minutes after missing 8 of 10 shots.
