NHL Morning Skate – Nov. 19, 2022

0

* For the first time in 2022-23 and 20th time in NHL history, 30 teams will be in action as part of a 15-game Saturday.

* Five teams are hosting their Hockey Fights Cancer Night on Saturday, including Connor McDavid and the Oilers who are set to face off against Jack Eichel and the Golden Knights in Edmonton.

Quinn Hughes collected two helpers Friday and climbed the Canucks’ all-time assist list as Vancouver extended its point streak against Los Angeles to 11 games.

Thirty teams will be in action on Saturday in the first 15-game day of the 2022-23 season and 20th in NHL history. In the NHL’s most recent 15-game day on April 29, teams combined for 104 goals (6.9 G/GP), marking the most total goals in a single day in League history.

In anticipation of a Saturday filled with hockey, the NHL Stats & Information team compiled 15 #NHLStats ahead of a 15-game slate (one per game):

1. The streaking Devils carry multiple winning streaks into Saturday’s matinee in Ottawa. New Jersey will look to extend its overall win streak to 12 games, a stretch that has only occurred 17 times in NHL history, and their road winning streak to eight games, which would be the third longest in franchise history.

2. The Flames will visit the Panthers in the first meeting between the two teams since a blockbuster off-season trade on July 22 that saw Calgary send Matthew Tkachuk to Florida for a return that included Jonathan Huberdeau and MacKenzie Weegar – just the second time in NHL history that players coming off 100+ point seasons were dealt for one another during the offseason (also Wayne Gretzky and Jimmy Carson after the 1987-88 season).

3. The Jets will look to extend their home winning streak to six games when they welcome Sidney Crosby and the Penguins to Winnipeg. The Jets, 6-1-0 on home ice in 2022-23, will aim to win seven of their first eight home games of a season for the first time in franchise history.

4. Mitchell Marner aims to extend the League’s longest active point streak to 12 games (3-12—15 in 11 GP) when the Maple Leafs host the Sabres on Hockey Night in Canada. After posting a career-high 13-game stretch in 2021-22, Marner can become the second player in franchise history to post multiple 12-game point streaks – only Lorne Carr has done so to date (14 GP in 1942-43 and 13 GP in 1943-44).

5. The Bruins can match an NHL record by extending their season-opening home win streak to 11 games when they host the Blackhawks – one of two franchises already tied for the NHL mark (11-0-0 in 1963-64). The other team to do so was the Panthers last season (11-0-0 at home to start 2021-22). The Bruins have outscored opponents 39-17 at TD Garden – their +22-goal differential on home ice is six higher than the next closest team in 2022-23 (WPG: +14).

6. Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar (51-147—198 in 193 GP), who has six multi-point games so far in 2022-23, sits two points shy of 200 for his career. He can become the first blueliner in NHL history to reach the 200-point milestone before skating in his 200th career game. Hall of Famer Sergei Zubov (207 GP) currently holds the mark for fastest defenseman to 200 points.

7. Red Wings defenseman Moritz Seider (8-48—56 in 99 GP) and forward Lucas Raymond (29-38—67 in 99 GP) are both expected to skate in their 100th career game Saturday. Among defensemen to start their career with the Red Wings, only three have had more points through 100 games than Seider: Nicklas Lidstrom (12-58—70), Reed Larson (21-47—68) and Yves Racine (12-52—64).

8. Canadiens captain Nick Suzuki has multiple points in three of his last four contests and has recorded eight such instances this season. The only players with more multi-point games during the 2022-23 campaign are Sharks defenseman Erik Karlsson (9), Oilers forward Connor McDavid (9) and Stars forward Jason Robertson (9).

9. Ducks goaltender John Gibson leads the NHL in 2022-23 with 416 saves in 13 appearances while facing an average of 38.5 shots against per 60 minutes (38.5 SA/60) – the only netminder so far this season to make at least 400 saves. Among goaltenders who have appeared in 10-plus games in 2022-23, Gibson ranks 10th in even-strength save percentage (.922).

10. Hurricanes netminder Pyotr Kochetkov can stretch his career-opening win streak to six games, which would trail only Martin Jones (8 GP in 2013-14), Bob Froese (8 GP in 1982-83) and Wayne Thomas (7 GP in 1972-73) for the longest such run in League history. On the other side of the ice, Minnesota’s Kirill Kaprizov has 10-9—19 in 17 games this season and owns a career points-per-game rate of 1.16 – only two active players born outside North America posted a higher points-per-game mark through their first three NHL seasons: Alex Ovechkin (1.27) and Evgeni Malkin (1.26).

11. Stars forwards Roope Hintz (6-9—15 in 10 GP) and Jason Robertson (9-10—19 in 10 GP) each enter Saturday with 10-game point streaks. Should they both extend, it would mark just the second time in Stars/North Stars history that multiple different players had point streaks longer than 10 games in the same season. Brian Bellows (20 GP) and Neal Broten (15 GP) both did so in 1985-86, when the club was based in Minnesota.

12. Predators defenseman Ryan McDonagh is set to face his former team for the first time when Nashville hosts Tampa Bay. McDonagh helped the Lightning earn consecutive Stanley Cup championships in 2020 and 2021 – only Victor Hedman (25:37) averaged more time on ice per game for Tampa Bay during the two championship runs than McDonagh (23:32).

13. The Kraken (9-5-3 in 17 GP) look to earn their 10th win of the season when they host the Kings. Last season, it took Seattle 28 games to hit the 10-win benchmark. The Kraken are 7-2-1 over their last 10 contests, matching a franchise-best 10-game stretch set earlier this season (7-2-1 from Oct. 19 – Nov. 8).

14. After being selected with the first two picks of the 2015 NHL Draft, Connor McDavid and Jack Eichel will face each other in the NHL for the 10th time. Eichel (5-5—10 in 9 GP) has a slight lead in production in head-to-head games against McDavid (3-5—8 in 9 GP). In terms of standings points, both have seen their teams earn an equal 11 points in head-to-head meetings: Eichel (5-3-1, 11 points); McDavid (4-2-3, 11 points).

15. Since Nov. 1, Erik Karlsson has recorded 5-12—17 in eight games which leads all players over that span. Karlsson can join Roman Josi (4-24—28 in March 2022) as only the second defenseman in the last ten years to lead all players in points in a calendar month.

TRIO OF CANUCKS PLAYERS POST MULTI-POINT GAMES IN WIN
Quinn Hughes collected two assists while Brock Boeser (2-0—2) and Elias Pettersson (2-0—2) each posted a multi-goal game to help the Canucks extend their point streak against the Kings to 11 contests (9-0-2 dating to Nov. 24, 2018) – their longest active run versus one franchise.

* Hughes reached and eclipsed the 15-assist mark in 2022-23 (0-16—16 in 14 GP). Only three players in Canucks history have required fewer games in a season to hit the mark: Anatoli Semenov (11 GP in 1992-93), Jiri Bubla (13 GP in 1983-84) and Thomas Gradin (13 GP in 1983-84).

* Hughes posted his 32nd career multi-assist game – only four defensemen in Canucks history have more: Dennis Kearns (53), Alexander Edler (42), Jyrki Lumme (38) and Doug Lidster (34). Hughes, a native of Orlando, Fla., also tied Gary Suter for the most multi-assist games by a U.S.-born defenseman prior to age 24, trailing only Phil Housley (52) and Brian Leetch (50).

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Clippers

0

After a recent solid run of games, the Los Angeles Clippers will try to stay consistent when they host the struggling San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.

The Clippers have won two of their past three games and four of their last six, with the most recent a come-from-behind 96-91 victory at home over Detroit on Thursday. Reggie Jackson led Los Angeles with 23 points in the win, with Marcus Morris Sr. and Paul George adding 16 apiece, Norman Powell scoring 14 and Ivica Zubac tying a career high with 18 rebounds.

It was the first time since Oct. 30 — a stretch of nine games — that George was not the team’s leading scorer.

Most importantly for the Clippers, five-time All-Star Kawhi Leonard was back on the court after missing 12 games. Leonard started for the first time this season and played in just his third game (his first since Oct. 23), scoring six points in 25 minutes.

The Clippers trailed by three points with under 10 minutes to play on Thursday before uncorking a 17-6 run that was capped by Leonard’s driving layup with 4:04 remaining. That gave Los Angeles plenty to get to the finish line.

The Spurs head into Los Angeles dragging the baggage of a three-game losing streak that includes a 130-112 defeat in Sacramento on Thursday. The contest against the Kings was San Antonio’s third in a four-day stretch, all on the road, with losses to the Warriors and Trail Blazers preluding Thursday’s setback.

Devin Vassell led all scorers with 29 points for the Spurs, with Keita Bates-Diop scoring 16 points, Tre Jones adding 15, Jeremy Sochan and Isaiah Roby hitting for 11 apiece and Jakob Poeltl tallying 10 points. San Antonio never led in the game and lost despite shooting 54.8 percent from the floor.

The Spurs played without leading scorer Keldon Johnson, who was ruled out of Thursday’s game just before tipoff with an ankle injury. Doug McDermott also missed the game because of left calf tightness.

San Antonio roared back from 16 points down to tie Thursday’s game three times in the third quarter before Sacramento scored 11 straight points in a run that began late in the period and stretched into the first minute of the fourth. The Spurs never got closer than 10 points the rest of the way.

The Spurs have won just once in their past nine games and are a season-worst four games under .500. And there’s little rest for the weary, as Saturday’s game is the fourth of a five-game road trip and the first of a back-to-back against the two Los Angeles teams.

NBA Preview: Utah Jazz at Portland Trail Blazers

0

The Utah Jazz don’t have much time to celebrate a thrilling 134-133 home win on Friday over the Phoenix Suns, a team that many consider to be the Western Conference favorite this season.

A night after overcoming a 49-point performance by the Suns’ Devin Booker, the Jazz visit the Portland Trail Blazers on Saturday night for another showdown with a team atop the early conference standings.

The winner between the Blazers (10-5) and the Jazz (11-6) will own the best record in the West, for whatever that’s worth at this point in the season.

That’s especially surprising, considering the two teams are winning at a higher rate than expected. As noted by The Oregonian, the Blazers’ over/under for wins was 40.5 coming into the season. Utah, which traded away Rudy Gobert and Donovan Mitchell, had much lower outside expectations, including an over/under of 23.5 victories.

Utah’s chances of winning will be much greater if Lauri Markkanen, the surprising team’s surprising All-Star candidate, has another outing like the one he produced Friday, when he scored a career-high 38 points.

Markkanen’s big night included the game-winning points off a tough 20-point turnaround jumper with 37.9 seconds left, capping his 15-for-18 performance from the field. It was his fourth 30-point game since he joined the Jazz from the Cleveland Cavaliers in September as part of the Mitchell trade.

Utah improved to 10-0 when Markkanen scores at least 18 points. Teammate Jarred Vanderbilt tweeted after the game, “Lauri Markkanen is an All-star. That’s it.”

Hardy said, “I don’t know what the ceiling is on Lauri. I don’t think any of us do based on what we are watching night in and night out.”

The Jazz also received big performances from Malik Beasley, who had seven 3-pointers in a 27-point showing; Jordan Clarkson, who scored 20 points; and Mike Conley, who registered 13 points and 10 assists. It was all needed to outpace the Suns and allow Utah to snap a three-game skid.

The Blazers have their own All-Star who can light up the scoreboard on any night. Damian Lillard had 25 points and 11 assists in Portland’s most recent outing, a tough 109-107 loss to the visiting Brooklyn Nets on Thursday. It was Lillard’s third double-double in a row.

Anfernee Simons added 24 points and Shaedon Sharpe chipped in with a career-best 20 points off the bench, but the Blazers shot just 38.7 percent en route to their second loss in three games.

Blazers forward Nassir Little, who has yet to miss a game this season, is listed as questionable for Saturday due to a left calf injury.

NBA Preview: Minnesota Timberwolves at Philadelphia Sixers

0

The Philadelphia 76ers aim to remain perfect on their five-game homestand on Saturday, playing the second leg of a back-to-back when they host the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Philadelphia won for the fourth time in the past five games, and the third time on the homestand, when it downed the Milwaukee Bucks 110-102 on Friday. Joel Embiid went for 32 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists to power the Sixers to a second-half comeback.

Shake Milton came off the Philadelphia bench to score 15 points and dish six assists. He finished with a game-high plus-minus of plus-17, stepping up after starter Tyrese Maxey exited the game due to a left foot injury.

Maxey, who will undergo an MRI exam on Saturday, had 24 points on 9-of-12 shooting from the floor when he sustained the injury on Friday. He is averaging 22.9 points per game on the season.

A potential Maxey absence from the lineup adds to Philadelphia’s backcourt woes with James Harden already sidelined due to a strained right foot. Harden, who is averaging 22 points and 10 assists per game, hasn’t played since Nov. 2 and isn’t expected to return this month.

The Sixers will look for answers in pursuit of a fourth straight win as they face a Minnesota team that has a two-game winning streak.

After dropping 6 of 7, including the first game on its current four-game road swing, Minnesota has produced two of its highest-scoring performances of the season in back-to-back wins at Cleveland and Orlando.

The Timberwolves jumped out to big early leads in both contests. The 126-108 defeat of the Magic on Wednesday deviated from the 129-124 win over the Cavaliers on Sunday, however, with Minnesota’s ability to maintain its comfortable edge throughout.

Anthony Edwards, who scored a season-high 35 points in Orlando, attributed the wire-to-wire dominance of the Magic of growing chemistry among the Timberwolves’ starting five.

That group is headed by Edwards and Karl-Anthony Towns, who are each averaging 21.9 points per game. Center Rudy Gobert, acquired in an offseason trade with the Utah Jazz, is averaging 14.2 points and 12.5 rebounds per contest, and D’Angelo Russell delivered his best offensive performance of the season with 30 points and 11 assists at Cleveland.

Russell is up to 14.2 points and 6.2 assists per game. With Jaden McDaniels adding another 11.1 points per game, the entire Minnesota starting lineup is averaging in double figures.

Saturday marks the end of Minnesota’s road trip.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic at Indiana Pacers

0

Two rebuilding teams riding high after impressive wins meet on Saturday when the Orlando Magic face the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis.

Orlando held on for a 108-107 win over the host Chicago Bulls on Friday, while Indiana rallied from an early deficit to beat the host Houston Rockets 99-91 for its third straight victory.

Wendell Carter Jr. led Orlando with 21 points, and Jalen Suggs and Franz Wagner scored 20 apiece. Bol Bol added 15 points and 10 rebounds as the Magic snapped a two-game skid.

Orlando sits near the bottom of the Eastern Conference with a 5-11 record, but the team has registered notable victories over the Golden State Warriors, Dallas Mavericks and Phoenix Suns.

The Friday victory over Chicago marked another step forward for the Magic, who led by 19 in the third quarter before falling behind in the final minute. Suggs’ 3-pointer with five seconds left gave Orlando its first win in seven road games this season.

Orlando is looking to reverse a negative trend against the Pacers, having lost 26 of the teams’ past 33 matchups.

The Pacers found themselves down 30-10 in the second quarter on Friday against Houston, and frustration set in when Indiana coach Rick Carlisle was ejected before halftime.

Tyrese Haliburton led the comeback with 19 points, while Myles Turner added 17 and Jalen Smith contributed a career-high 18 rebounds.

Orlando’s imposing frontline will be challenged by Turner, who is averaging 20.5 points and 9.5 rebounds over his past six games.

Indiana also boasts one of the league’s top rookies in guard Bennedict Mathurin, who is averaging 19.6 points.

The sixth overall pick in the 2022 draft, Mathurin is shooting 43.9 percent from 3-point range through 14 games.

The league’s top draft pick was Orlando forward Paolo Banchero, who has missed the past five games due to a sprained left ankle. Banchero, who leads the team in scoring at 23.5 points per game, is listed as day-to-day.

The Magic received some good news on the injury front when guard Gary Harris returned Friday after missing the first 15 games due to surgery on his left knee. Harris had seven points in 24 minutes off the bench against Chicago.

Harris, who is in second season with Orlando following 6 1/2 years with the Denver Nuggets, said his team’s record doesn’t reflect its competitive level.

NBA Preview: Toronto Raptors at Atlanta Hawks

0

The Toronto Raptors hope to get an encore performance from O.G. Anunoby when they travel to play the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday.

The Raptors have dominated the series over the last two seasons. Toronto won three of the four meetings a year ago and scored a 139-109 win over Atlanta on Oct. 31 in their first encounter of the season when the Hawks committed a season-worst 18 turnovers.

Anunoby scored a career-high 32 points and matched his season high with 10 rebounds in Toronto’s 112-104 win over the Miami Heat on Wednesday. The Raptors have won two straight.

Atlanta followed its emotional win over Milwaukee with a poor performance in a 126-101 loss to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday. Atlanta has won five of its last eight, the losses coming against Philadelphia, Utah and Boston.

Anunoby was 13 for 18 from the field against Miami and is averaging 18.3 points and 6.4 rebounds.

The Raptors should also have a healthy Fred VanVleet on Saturday. He returned on Wednesday after missing two games with the flu and scored 23, even though he wasn’t at full strength.

VanVleet leads Toronto’s balanced scoring attack with 18.8 points, along with 6.9 rebounds and 3.5 assists. VanVleet missed the first game with Atlanta but has averaged 16 points against the Hawks in 16 career games.

Atlanta’s Trae Young scored 27 points against the Celtics, but the Hawks continued to have shooting issues. The team scored only 18 points in the first quarter and could never dig out of the hole. The Hawks rank 20th in the league in field goal percentage (.463), 27th in 3-point percentage (.322) and 11th in scoring (114.6).

Young leads the team with 26.9 points and 9.3 assists and is the only player in the league averaging at least 25 points and nine assists. In last year’s lone win against Toronto, Young had 41 points and 11 assists to help the Hawks overcome a 12-point deficit in a game they won 127-100.

Despite the middling shooting success, the Hawks continue to reach the 100-point mark. They have scored 100-plus points in their first 15 games, the fourth-longest stretch to begin a season. Atlanta has reached the 100-plus points mark in 36 consecutive games dating to last season, the longest active streak in the NBA.

The Raptors will be without Pascal Siakam, who has missed five straight games with a right adductor strain. Siakam had 31 points and 12 rebounds against the Hawks in October. Gary Trent Jr. has missed two straight games with right hip soreness and Precious Achiuwa (right ankle sprain) and Otto Porter Jr. (dislocated toe) are also out.

Rangers do not tender 2023 contract offer to RHP Nick Snyder

0

Arlington, Texas — The Texas Rangers today announced that the club will not tender a 2023 contract offer to right-handed pitcher Nick Snyder prior to tonight’s 7:00 p.m. CT deadline, making him a free agent.

The Rangers tendered contract offers to each of the other 32 eligible players on the roster.  The club already had seven players under contract for 2023: RHP Jon Gray, RHP José Leclerc, INF/OF Brad Miller, RHP Jake Odorizzi, LHP Martín Pérez, SS Corey Seager, and 2B Marcus Semien.

The 27-year-old Snyder made 2 relief appearances across a pair of brief stints with Texas in 2022: April 14-23 and May 20-22.  He also averaged 12.1 strikeouts per 9 innings over 41 games with Triple-A Round Rock last season.

Following today’s transaction, the Rangers now have 39 players on the club’s Major League roster.

Twins tender deadline update

0

MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL, MN – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have tendered contracts to all unsigned players on the 40-man roster, including arbitration-eligible left-handed pitcher Caleb Thielbar, right-handed pitchers Jorge Alcala, Tyler Mahle, Jorge López, Chris Paddack and Emilio Pagán, and infielder Luis Arraez.

The Twins now have 39 players on their major league roster: 24 pitchers, one catcher, five infielders and nine outfielders.

Royals non-tender two players

0

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Royals announced today that they will not tender a Major League contract to left-handed pitcher Jake Brentz and right-handed pitcher Nate Webb, both of whom were designated for assignment on Tuesday.

Brentz, 28, made 8 appearances in 2022 before suffering a season-ending injury in April.

Webb, 25, made 27 appearances (1 start) between Triple-A Omaha, Double-A Northwest Arkansas and the ACL Royals in 2022, but missed more than 11 weeks due to injury. He also recorded 5.2 innings across 6 appearances and allowed just one unearned run in the Arizona Fall League.

Astros announce contract tenders

0

Eight of nine arbitration-eligible players tendered contracts for 2023

HOUSTON, TX — The Houston Astros have tendered contracts to eight of their nine arbitration-eligible players. Players receiving contracts for the 2023 season were IF/OF Mauricio Dubón, RHP Cristian Javier, RHP Phil Maton, RHP Ryne Stanek, LHP Blake Taylor, RF Kyle Tucker, RHP José Urquidy and LHP Framber Valdez. The one player non-tendered was RHP Josh James.

The deadline for Major League clubs to tender contracts to their arbitration-eligible players is tonight at 7 p.m. CT.

James, 29, made 30 minor league appearances in the Astros system this season but did not see any Major League action. He finished his year on the Astros 60-day IL, while recovering from a right lat strain. James has been with the Astros organization for the last nine years since being selected in the 34th-round of the June 2014 draft. He made 73 Major League appearances with Houston across parts of four seasons (2018-21).

With the removal of James, the Astros 40-man roster is at 35 players.
