Reds acquire RHP Casey Legumina from Twins

CINCINNATI – Cincinnati Reds Vice President, General Manager Nick Krall today announced the acquisition of RHP Casey Legumina from the Minnesota Twins for IF Kyle Farmer.

Legumina, 25, originally was selected by the Twins in the eighth round of the 2019 first-year player draft out of Gonzaga University. He is rated by MLB Pipeline the No. 26 prospect in Minnesota’s organization.

This season at Class A Cedar Rapids and Class AA Wichita, the Dallas native combined to finish 2-6 with a 4.80 ERA, 3 saves and 92 strikeouts in just 86.1 innings over 16 starts and 17 relief appearances.

In his 2-season minor league career, Legumina is 6-8 with a 4.25 ERA and 3 saves in 25 starts and 23 relief appearances. On Tuesday, he was added to the Twins’ 40-man roster.

Farmer, 32, was acquired from the Dodgers in December 2018, along with OF Matt KempOF Yasiel Puig, LHP Alex Wood and cash, for RHP Homer BaileyIF Jeter Downs and RHP Josiah Gray. He hit .255 in his 421 appearances for the Reds.

White Sox decline to tender contracts to three players

CHICAGO – The Chicago White Sox have declined to tender 2023 contracts to outfielders Adam Engel and Mark Payton and infielder Danny Mendick.

“We appreciate all that Adam and Danny did for our organization in 2022 and during prior seasons. As we have said at other times, a lot of consideration and analysis goes into the club deciding to forego the arbitration process and instead engage with players and their representatives as free agents,” said Rick Hahn, White Sox senior vice president/general manager. “Our plan is to stay in contact with all three players and evaluate their ongoing fit with our club as we move forward through this offseason.”

Engel, 30, batted .224/.269/.310 (55-245) with two home runs, 17 RBI, 32 runs scored and 12 stolen bases last season, his sixth with the White Sox.

Mendick, 29, hit .289/.343/.443 (28-97) with three homers, 15 RBI and 22 runs scored over 31 games in 2022 before suffering a season-ending torn ACL in his right knee on June 22 vs. Toronto.

Payton, 30, went 3-21 (.143) with one RBI in eight games over two stints with the Sox last September.

All remaining unsigned players on the White Sox 40-man roster have been tendered contracts for the 2023 season.

Following the moves, the White Sox 40-man roster decreases to 35.

Colorado Rockies transactions

The Colorado Rockies announced today that they have non-tendered infielder/outfielder Garrett Hampson. 

Additionally, the Rockies have agreed to terms with left-handed pitcher Brent Suter on a one-year contract to avoid arbitration. Suter was claimed off waivers from Milwaukee earlier this afternoon.

Colorado currently has 39 players on the 40-man roster.

Mets roster notes

The New York Mets tonight announced they have opted not to tender a contract to first baseman Dominic Smith and RHP Sean Reid-Foley. All other Mets players are signed for 2023 or will be tendered a contract.

Red Sox announce roster moves

BOSTON, MA — The Boston Red Sox today announced that the club will not tender 2023 contracts to infielder Yu Chang or first baseman/outfielder Franchy Cordero. As a result, both players will become free agents.

The Red Sox will tender 2023 contracts to all 30 remaining unsigned players on their Major League roster.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Eight players are already under contract for 2023: Matt Barnes, Kiké Hernández, Eric Hosmer, James Paxton, Rob Refsnyder, Chris Sale, Trevor Story, and Garrett Whitlock.

Pirates acquire pitcher Dauri Moreta from Cincinnati Reds for infielder Kevin Newman

The Pittsburgh Pirates today acquired right-handed pitcher Dauri Moreta (DOW-ree mo-RETTA) from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for infielder Kevin Newman. With the move, the Pirates’ 40-man roster remains at 40. 

The 26-year-old Moreta made five stints in the Majors in 2022, going 0-2 with 1 save, a 5.40 ERA (23 ER in 38.1 IP), 39 strikeouts, 13 walks and a .227 opponents average in 35 games (1 start) for the Reds. The 6-foot-2, 185-pounder posted 17 scoreless appearances over his last 20 outings of the season after June 19, posting a 2.92 ERA (8 ER in 24.2 IP) with 23 strikeouts and a .195 opponents average in that time. Moreta had 10 outings of greater than 1.0 inning pitched on the season, including each of his final five appearances. 

In 28 games with Triple-A Louisville last season, Moreta went 3-4 with 1 save, a 3.95 ERA (12 ER in 27.1 IP), 28 strikeouts and a .295 opponent average. In 2021, he was named the Reds’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year, an MiLB.com Organization All-Star and was named to the Baseball America Minor League All-Star Second Team after he went 6-0 with 8 saves, a 1.02 ERA (6 ER in 53.0 IP), 58 strikeouts and .164 opponents average in 42 games between Double-A Chattanooga and Louisville.

Moreta made his Major League debut on September 26, 2021, and appeared in five games that season, posting a 2.45 ERA (1 ER in 3.2 IP) with a .154 opponents average. He entered the 2022 campaign ranked by Baseball America as the No. 15 prospect in Cincinnati’s system.

Newman, 29, was the Pirates’ first-round selection in the 2015 First-Year Player Draft. He combined to hit .260 (402-for-1,545)/.303 OBP/.357 SLG with 67 doubles, 11 triples, 20 home runs and 143 RBI in 431 career games over parts of five Major League seasons with Pittsburgh.

Dodgers non-tender Cody Bellinger

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers have non-tendered outfielders Cody Bellinger and Luke Williams, as well as infielder Edwin Ríos.

Bellinger, 27, played in 144 games for the Dodgers last season, hitting .210 (106-for-504) with 27 doubles, 19 homers and 68 RBI. The Arizona native won the National League Rookie of the Year in 2017, hitting .267 with a National League rookie record 39 homers. In 2019, he won the National League Most Valuable Player Award, slashing .305/.406/.629 with 47 homers and 115 RBI. During that campaign, he became the only player in franchise history win the MVP, Rawlings Gold Glove and Louisville Silver Slugger in the same season. He spent parts of six seasons with the Dodgers, hitting a combined .248 with 152 homers and 422 RBI. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the fourth round of the 2013 First Year Player Draft out of Hamilton High School.

Williams, 26, was selected off waivers by the Dodgers on November 8. He played in 79 games last season with San Francisco and Miami. He began the season with the Giants, hitting .250 with three RBI before being designated for assignment on May 21. He finished the season with the Marlins, hitting .235 (27-for-115) with four doubles, one homer and three RBI. He has been in the Major Leagues parts of two seasons, hitting a combined .240 (54-for-225) with nine doubles, two homers and 12 RBI. In seven minor league seasons, he has hit a combined .241 with 24 homers and 174 RBI in 486 games. He was originally drafted in the third round of the 2015 First Year Player Draft by the Philadelphia Phillies.

Ríos, 28, played in 27 games for the Dodgers last season, recording seven homers and 17 RBI. He missed most of the season with a right hamstring strain and finished the campaign with Triple-A Oklahoma City, hitting a combined .259 with nine homers and 39 RBI. He has spent parts of four seasons with the Dodgers, clubbing 20 homers and recording 43 RBI in 112 games. In six minor league seasons with the Dodgers, he hit a combined .291 with 104 homers and 365 RBI. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the sixth round of the 2015 First Year Player Draft out of Florida International University.

Cubs announce roster moves for November 18

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today announced the following roster moves for Friday, November 18, in conjunction with today’s deadline to tender/non-tender 2023 contracts for unsigned players on their 40-man roster.

The Cubs have agreed to terms on 2023 contracts with right-handed pitchers Adrian Sampson and Rowan Wick, thus avoiding salary arbitration with both. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.

Four arbitration-eligible players have been tendered 2023 contracts: outfielder Ian Happ, right-handed pitcher
Codi Heuer, and infielders Nico Hoerner and Nick Madrigal. Overall, a total of 31 players from the Cubs 40-man roster were tendered 2023 contracts today – the four arbitration-eligible players listed above and 27 players not yet eligible for arbitration.

The Cubs have non-tendered three players: left-handed pitcher Brailyn Marquez and right-handed pitcher Alexander Vizcaíno, both of whom were not yet eligible for arbitration, as well as outfielder Rafael Ortega, who was arbitration eligible.

The Cubs 40-man roster now stands at 37 players.

Blue Jays roster moves
