The Dallas Mavericks had so much fun playing the visiting Denver Nuggets on Friday night that they are happy to do it again on Sunday.
Dallas cruised to a 28-point win in the first of two games in three days with Denver, but it comes with a bit of an asterisk. The Nuggets played without three starters, including two-time MVP Nikola Jokic, and it showed against the Mavericks.
Luka Doncic notched his fourth triple-double of the season (33 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists) and the 50th of his career after sitting out a game for rest, and it looked easy for him and his teammates. Dallas led by as many as 31 against a short-handed Denver squad.
It doesn’t look like the Nuggets will have Jokic back for the rematch. Coach Michael Malone said Friday night Jokic will remain in health and safety protocols for the third straight game, as will Jamal Murray, who missed Friday’s game.
In addition to Michael Porter Jr., the only other starter with a chance to play is Aaron Gordon, who has missed the past two games with a non-COVID illness.
Denver had no success in stopping Doncic and little in containing Christian Wood, who scored 28 points in the 127-99 win.
The Nuggets need someone to step up if they’re going to flip the script Sunday night. Porter has struggled in the two games Jokic has missed, scoring a total of 15 points and shooting a combined 5-for-23 from the field.
The previous game, a win at Chicago last Sunday, Porter scored 31 points.
Jokic, Gordon and Murray weren’t the only ones sidelined. Ish Smith has missed the last two games with a right calf strain, further depleting the bench. It did give Vlatko Cancar a chance for some minutes, and he logged 23 while scoring eight points.
Bones Hyland was the only reserve to score in double figures. He finished with 17 points on 5-of-16 shooting and was 3-for-11 from 3-point range.
There was little out of the ordinary in the Warriors’ 111-101 home victory over the New York Knicks on Friday.
It was a win that featured six Warriors scoring in double figures paced by Stephen Curry, who paired a team-high 24 points with 10 assists and now ranks third in the NBA in scoring.
Draymond Green added 10 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two blocks. Klay Thompson scored 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting for the Warriors, who claimed their sixth consecutive win at Chase Center by springing to an 18-point lead behind their veteran starting unit.
What continues to bedevil the Warriors is their effort on the road, where they are winless in eight games. Golden State will be in Houston on Sunday to face the Rockets seeking their first road win.
The reigning champions have yet to muster the same consistency away from home. It’s been a bizarre set of circumstances for a team with such a strong veteran presence and one accustomed to dizzying levels of success. The victory over the Knicks provided another snapshot of how the Warriors perform when they are at their best.
The Rockets would appear to be a likely candidate to hand deliver the Warriors their first road triumph. Houston coughed up a 20-point first-half lead in falling to the Indiana Pacers 99-91 at home on Friday, leaving the Rockets with only one victory at Toyota Center this season.
Houston continues to struggle to cobble together complete performances. For a second consecutive game, the Rockets held an opponent below 100 points, even limiting the Pacers to just 10 points in the opening period. However, the Rockets labored initiating their offense without guard Kevin Porter Jr., who was sidelined by lower left back soreness. While Porter has committed an NBA-high 60 turnovers, he leads the Rockets averaging 5.8 assists per game.
Porter is listed as doubtful for Sunday.
Without Porter, the Rockets recorded more turnovers (17) than assists (15) against the Pacers. Their primary ballhandlers in his absence combined for 10 turnovers, with second-year guard Jalen Green responsible for six while Eric Gordon and Daishen Nix posted two apiece.
The Rockets rank 28th in assists per game (21.3) and 26th in assist percentage (55.8) with or without Porter.
Fresh off snapping a five-game losing skid, the Cleveland Cavaliers continue a four-game homestand on Sunday when they welcome the visiting Miami Heat.
Miami continues a four-game road trip with Sunday’s contest, coming in having dropped its first two decisions at Toronto and Washington.
Friday’s 107-106 overtime loss against the Wizards exposed the Heat’s struggles with depth. Just seven players dressed, six of whom logged more than 30 minutes.
As Friday’s contest wore on, the Miami offense sputtered with a pair of second-half quarters scoring fewer than 20 points, followed by only two points in overtime.
Kyle Lowry recorded a triple-double with 24 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds, while Max Strus added 22 points — but shot just 3-of-14 from beyond the 3-point arc.
The last of Strus’ misses came out of a timeout on the game’s final possession.
Miami faces Cleveland still facing numerous roster questions. Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler, both of whom sat on Friday, are listed as day-to-day with knee injuries.
Butler leads the Heat at 20.9 points per game, while Adebayo is averaging 19.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Tyler Herro, averaging 19.6 points and 2.4 made 3-pointers a contest, missed the Washington game with an ankle injury.
Duncan Robinson, Dewayne Dedmon and Gabe Vincent are also all listed as day-to-day.
Cleveland, meanwhile, opened its four-game homestand on Friday with a 132-122, double-overtime defeat of Charlotte. The win was the Cavaliers’ first since Nov. 6 when they concluded an eight-game winning streak.
The Hornets very nearly extended Cleveland’s losing skid, rallying from a 16-point second-half deficit to force extra frames.
Garland’s 41 points came less than a week after he finished with 51 points in a Nov. 13 loss to Minnesota. The 51-point outpouring set the NBA’s single-game scoring-high — for about an hour, anyway. Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid scored 59 points the same night.
Donovan Mitchell added 34 points in the win on Friday. Mitchell is one of just five players in the league averaging north of 31 points per game with at least 11 games played.
While the backcourt duo paced the offense, Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised the total-team effort — particularly in the overtimes.
Kyrie Irving’s last appearance with the Brooklyn Nets occurred on Nov. 1 as controversy swirled around the team.
His next appearance is likely Sunday night when the Nets return home from a four-game road trip to face the Memphis Grizzlies, who will be without star Ja Morant.
Irving is expected to return after sitting out Brooklyn’s past eight games. His last game was a four-point performance when the Nets folded in the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bulls in Jacque Vaughn’s head coaching debut after taking over from Steve Nash.
Irving was the focal point of controversy for posting a link to an anti-Semitic film on Oct. 27, and was handed at least a five-game suspension when he did not apologize following a contentious media session at practice on Nov. 3.
When the Nets suspended him, they stipulated Irving must complete several steps, including meeting with commissioner Adam Silver. They met last week, and Silver said he did not think Irving held anti-Semitic beliefs.
Since Irving’s last appearance, the Nets are 5-3 and — even with allowing 153 points Tuesday at Sacramento — they are defending better recently.
Through Nov. 1, the Nets were allowing 118.8 points, 47.0 percent shooting and 41.2 percent from 3-point range. Since then, Brooklyn is allowing 104 points, 42.3 percent shooting and 35.8 percent from behind the arc.
Brooklyn returns after splitting a four-game West Coast trip. The Nets ended the trek by rallying from an 11-point deficit when Royce O’Neale capped his first career triple-double by tipping in the miss of a Durant jumper with seven-tenths of a second remaining in a 109-107 win Thursday.
Durant scored 35 points and has scored at least 25 in each game. He is the first player with such a streak since Michael Jordan did it in 16 straight to start 1988-89. The last player to achieve the feat in 17 straight was Rick Barry for the first 25 games of the 1966-67 season for the San Francisco Warriors.
Memphis snapped its second losing streak of the season by earning a 121-110 win over the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday when Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 25 in his second game back from right foot surgery.
Morant scored 19 before exiting late in the fourth quarter with a tweaked ankle. The star guard was diagnosed Saturday with a Grade 1 left ankle sprain and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.
Tyus Jones will likely get the start as the Grizzlies have yet to play a game with their expected starting five of Morant, Desmond Bane, Dillon Brooks, Jackson and center Steven Adams.
Teams hoping to become lucky losers in the 2022 NBA Draft lottery get an opportunity to show off their consolation prizes to one another when the Detroit Pistons visit the Sacramento Kings on Sunday afternoon.
The Pistons and Kings both finished with bottom-seven records last season, giving each at least some optimism that luck could land them the No. 1 pick in the draft.
It didn’t pan out. The Kings moved up from No. 7 to No. 4, which was significantly better than the fate that befell the Pistons, who fell from co-favorite to the fifth spot.
After Paolo Banchero (Orlando), Chet Holmgren (Oklahoma City) and Jabari Smith Jr. (Houston) were selected, the Kings had their choice of Iowa forward Keegan Murray or Purdue guard Jaden Ivey.
Sacramento chose Murray, allowing the Pistons to snatch Ivey.
So far: Advantage, Pistons. While the Kings have gotten off to a much faster start in the win column, Ivey has thus far exceeded Murray in stats.
Playing alongside Cade Cunningham until the top pick of the 2021 draft injured his shin recently, Ivey has scored in double figures in 15 of his 16 games and recorded double-doubles in three. His 17 points and five assists in Friday’s 128-121 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers left his season averages at 16.3 and 4.2, respectively.
Ivey went head-to-head with No. 1 overall pick Banchero in the opener and contributed 19 points to a Pistons win. He has yet to face Holmgren, who is injured and out for the season, or Smith, and on Sunday gets his first shot at Murray.
The Kings’ prize rookie has been bothered by a sore back and sat out Thursday’s 130-112 home win over the San Antonio Spurs. The injury is not considered to be serious and he is probable to return Sunday.
Murray has averaged 12.0 points and 3.7 rebounds for a team that has been an early surprise under new coach Mike Brown. The Kings have rebounded from an 0-4 start to win eight of 10, including their last five in a row.
They’ll be looking to complete a perfect 4-0 homestand against the Pistons, having already beaten Golden State, Brooklyn and San Antonio in the past week.
Having denied their fans a first-hand view of the playoffs since 2006, the Kings have taken a “Win One For Sacramento” approach to the season.
The Pistons have lost six in a row, including two straight to open their current six-game Western swing. Cunningham remains out indefinitely with a shin injury that is being reported as a stress fracture that might require surgery.
The Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards are coming off Friday night games that had something in common, as neither was decided in regulation.
From there, there were different routes.
So expect the Wizards to be in a little better shape when the teams meet Sunday night in Washington.
The Wizards beat the visiting Miami Heat 107-106 in overtime for their fifth victory in their last six games.
The Hornets have to search for any positives, particularly after a bizarre double-overtime loss at Cleveland.
Charlotte came back from 10 down in the final 45 seconds of regulation and then was in position to win in the first overtime before ultimately suffering its 10th loss in the last 11 games.
Washington’s stretch of positive results began with a 108-100 victory Nov. 7 at Charlotte.
Kyle Kuzma of the Wizards had a team-high 20 points in that game, beginning a stretch of four outings with 20 or more points in a six-game span.
It’s no wonder Kuzma’s confidence has been soaring. He hit a game-tying 3-pointer to get Friday night’s game into overtime.
The Hornets often bog down offensively late in the games. On Friday against Cleveland, they perked up in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers 35-23.
Charlotte reserve center Nick Richards produced his third career double-double. That came in part because of a career-best 14 rebounds.
More consistency from players such as Richards would be a boost for the Hornets, whose roster tends to have players coming and going in terms of availability. Point guard LaMelo Ball is out again with an ankle injury and has played in only three games.
On the plus side, Gordon Hayward (shoulder) returned to action Friday night.
Hayward was one of four Charlotte players to log 39 or more minutes, so the wear and tear factor might be worth monitoring. Even though it’s early in the season, several of the Hornets have been called upon for extensive duty because of the evolving roster.
While Charlotte’s roster seems limited to some degree, the Wizards are turning to all sorts of producers. Taj Gibson didn’t play in the first half Friday against Miami, then showed up and made key contributions.
Sunday’s game marks the last in Washington’s six-game homestand. The Wizards are 4-1 so far. Three of Charlotte’s four wins this season have come on the road.
Back-to-back wins over a pair of Western Conference contenders to start a pivotal road trip provided a glimpse of the consistency the New York Knicks have been seeking for most of the last two seasons.
But if Friday’s loss to the Golden State Warriors was any indication, that glimpse might have just been a mirage.
The Knicks will look to clinch a winning record on their five-game road swing Sunday afternoon when they visit the Phoenix Suns in the first clash this season between the teams.
Both clubs were off Saturday after falling Friday night, when the Knicks lost to the Warriors 111-101 and the Suns were nipped by the host Utah Jazz, 134-133.
The loss represented a step back for the Knicks, who built just their second winning streak of the season by beating the Jazz 118-111 on Tuesday night before edging the Denver Nuggets, 106-103, the next night.
But the Knicks squandered a chance to take advantage of the defending NBA champion Warriors, who were just 6-9 entering Friday night. Golden State raced to a 35-19 lead after the first quarter, led by as many as 22 points in the second quarter and never allowed New York to get closer than eight points in the second half.
The Knicks still have a chance at their most successful road trip in more than eight years. New York, which finishes the trip at Oklahoma City on Monday night, hasn’t posted a winning record on a road trip of five games or longer since going 3-2 on a West Coast trek from March 25-31, 2014.
A slow start Friday was typical of an inconsistent stretch for the Suns, who have gone 3-5 since a five-game winning streak (Oct. 23 to Nov. 1). Phoenix, which beat the Warriors 130-119 on Wednesday night, had a chance to win a second straight Friday but fell behind Utah by 19 points in the first quarter and trailed by as many as 15 points in the second quarter.
The Suns came all the way back and tied the game twice — once in the final minute of the third and again in the opening seconds of the fourth — before Damian Lee hit a 3-pointer to give the visitors their lone lead at 121-120 with 7:28 left. But Phoenix was 3 of 14 with two turnovers the rest of the way, a span in which it missed nine shots with a chance to tie the score or retake the lead.
Suns point guard Chris Paul missed his fifth straight game with a sore right heel and has already been ruled out for Sunday.
* The first 15-game day of the season was highlighted by all 30 teams in action uniting for a League-wide Hockey Fights Cancer moment of silence.
* The Blues, Devils and Bruins extended lengthy winning streaks, while Alex Goligoski scored an emotional overtime goal to halt the Wild’s three-game slide.
* The Blackhawks are set to retire the No. 81 of Marian Hossa during a pre-game ceremony at United Center on Sunday.
THIRTY TEAMS PARTAKE IN LEAGUE-WIDE HOCKEY FIGHTS CANCER MOMENT OF SILENCE Before teams battled it out on the ice Saturday, the NHL and its players united for a League-wide Hockey Fights Cancer moment of silence. That included the Canadiens and Flyers at Bell Centre, with Montreal following up the pre-game ceremony by earning a multi-goal comeback win courtesy of two game-tying tallies from Cole Caufield (one of which came in the final three seconds of regulation).
* ICYMI: The Canadiens dedicated their Hockey Fights Cancer Night to the children of Leucan, an association that has dedicated itself over the past 40 years to supporting cancer-stricken children and their families. Young Leucan members read the Canadiens’ starting lineup and joined the team on the ice prior to puck drop.
BUCHNEVICH BOLSTERS BLUES TO ANOTHER VICTORY Pavel Buchnevich (2-2—4), Jordan Kyrou (0-3—3) and Robert Thomas (1-2—3) ignited the St. Louis offense and helped the Blues become the third team in NHL history to record a six-game win streak immediately after suffering losses in eight or more consecutive games (also PHI in 2017-18: 6-0-0 & SJS in 2005-06: 6-0-0).
* The Blues (9-8-0, 18 points) trailed the first-place Jets in the Central Division by 11 points prior to the start of their winning streak (through GP on Nov. 9) and have since climbed from eighth place to fourth, finding themselves within six points of the first-place Stars (11-5-2, 24 points) who defeated the Islanders on Saturday and had Jason Robertson (10-10—20 in 11 GP) extend his career-high point streak to 11 games.
NEW JERSEY HAS ONE DEVIL OF A “HEATER” GOING Nathan Bastian became the ninth different Devils player to notch a game-winning goal during their winning streak and Akira Schmid (25 saves) improved to 3-0-0 on the season as New Jersey pushed its winning streak to 12 games – one shy of the franchise record.
* New Jersey became the 18th team in NHL history to post a winning streak of at least a dozen games but just the third to do so after missing the playoffs the season prior (also CBJ: 16-0-0 in 2016-17 & FLA: 12-0-0 in 2015-16).
* The Devils reached the 30-point mark in their 18th game, the fastest they have ever done so (previously 20 GP in 1997-98).
BERGERON HELPS BRUINS BEST BLACKHAWKS TO EXTEND HOME WINNING STREAK Patrice Bergeron (1-1—2), David Pastrnak (2-0—2) and Brad Marchand (0-3—3) each posted multi-point games, while defenseman Charlie McAvoy (0-4—4) put up a four-point performance to help the League-leading Bruins (16-2-0, 32 points) match the 1963-64 Black Hawks and 2021-22 Panthers for the longest season-opening home winning streak in NHL history (11-0-0).
* Bergeron, Pastrnak and Marchand all factored on the same goal for the 88th time, the second most by a trio in franchise history behind only Wayne Cashman, Phil Esposito and Ken Hodge (103). Bergeron, Pastrnak and Marchand passed Johnny Bucyk, John McKenzie and Fred Stanfield (87).
* Bergeron boosted his career totals to 409-590—999 in 1,234 career games and needs one point to reach 1,000 in his NHL career. The Bruins captain can become the fourth player in franchise history to record 1,000 points with Boston and the eighth active NHL skater to reach the milestone.
GOLIGOSKI CAPS OFF EMOTIONAL NIGHT WITH OVERTIME WINNER After being honored in a pre-game ceremony for reaching the 1,000-game milestone on Oct. 20, Alex Goligoski scored the overtime winner with his family in attendance at Xcel Energy Center to cap a come-from-behind win for the Wild. Goligoski was brought to tears during his post-game interview as he talked about his return to the lineup after being absent for 12 of 13 games contested by Minnesota since hitting the milestone.
SHUTOUT PERFORMANCES SHINE IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES Alexandar Georgiev (32 saves) and Tristan Jarry (32 saves) each turned aside all shots they faced to record their first shutout of the season and backstop the Avalanche and Penguins to victory, respectively. More notes from the NHL’s first 15-game day of the season can be found in Saturday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates.
* Georgiev, who has at least 30 saves in nine of his 11 games in 2022-23, registered his first shutout in an Avalanche uniform. Only six goaltenders in franchise history turned aside more shots in their first such performance with the Avalanche/Nordiques, a list topped by Reto Berra (41 on April 9, 2015).
* Jarry secured the 12th shutout of his NHL career to surpass Matt Murray and Les Binkley (both w/ 11) for sole possession of third place on the Penguins’ all-time list.
NOT ONE PATH: REAVES’ FOOTBALL BACKGROUND HIGHLIGHTED AHEAD OF GREY CUP Ryan Reaves’ unconventional path to the NHL is the latest Not One Path feature, shared ahead of the 2022 Grey Cup set for Sunday. Reaves was on a trajectory towards a career in football prior to a knee injury that caused him to miss the gridiron season – his success in the sport included being the No. 1-ranked football player in Manitoba during the same year he was drafted into the Western Hockey League. His connection to the gridiron also includes his brother, Jordan, who is a defensive lineman in the Canadian Football League with the Edmonton Elks.
Chicago will send Marian Hossa’s No. 81 to the rafters of United Center before facing Pittsburgh on Sunday, with the on-ice ceremony beginning at 4:30 p.m. CT ahead of a 6 p.m. CT puck drop. Hossa will be the eighth player to have his number retired by Chicago.
* A three-time Stanley Cup champion, Hossa collected two-thirds of his career playoff points with the Blackhawks and Penguins (66.4%; 99 of 149). He also tallied 186-229—415 in 534 regular-season games with Chicago, his highest assist, point and game totals with any franchise.
* In 2010, Hossa became the first player in NHL history to appear in the Stanley Cup Final in three straight years with a different club each time (a list Tampa Bay’s Corey Perry added his name to in 2022). After losing with the Penguins in 2008 and Red Wings in 2009, Hossa finally hoisted the Cup in his third trip to the Final – and won again with Chicago in 2013 and 2015.

Nevada was defeated by Pacific 76-71 in its home opener on Sunday afternoon at the Lawlor Events Center. Graduate student Megan Ormiston led Nevada with a season-high 12 points while junior guard Victoria Davis came up with 11 points and a career-high six steals.
This year’s Nevada women’s basketball team ranks 12th in the nation and first in the Mountain West in steals per game with a 15.5 mark. Redshirt junior Alyssa Jimenez is three steals away from becoming the seventh player since 2013 to record 100 career steals. She would be the fastest player since 2013 to reach that mark.
Freshman forward Kennedy Lee has proven she can make an immediate impact, averaging 10. 5 points per game. Lee scored 12 points at Saint Mary’s, the first freshman under Levens to score in double figures in a season opener.
The Pack will face Stanislaus State for the first time in a regular season game since 2019. Stanislaus State won 12 games last year and returns three of its top four leading scorers from the 2021-22 season.
Da’Miyah Lewis averaged 12.8 points per game in 19 games while Liliana Marques averaged 12.6 points per game in all 21 games she started in. Taylor Pilot added in 10.7 points per game in 17 games last season.
SEASON TICKETS AND MINI PLANS ON SALE NOW Season tickets and mini plans are now on sale. Season tickets for Nevada women’s basketball start at just $65. Season tickets for youth (8th grade and under) start at just $25 while the Family Four Pack (two adults, two youth) are $37.50 per person. Students receive free admission with their Wolf Card.
Nevada is offering two plans that are flexible for fans to choose the games they want to attend. Each plan will provide fans the ability to guarantee tickets inside Lawlor Events Center for marquee games.
All weekend games not a part of the Nugget Classic and the Feb. 11 game against New Mexico will be followed by a free post-game clinic for eighth grade and under students in addition to autographs with the team.
