NBA Preview: Portland Trail Blazers at Milwaukee Bucks

0

Giannis Antetokounmpo gets an opportunity to demonstrate that his extra free throw-shooting practice will pay dividends when the Milwaukee Bucks open a four-game homestand Monday night against the Damian Lillard-less Portland Trail Blazers.

The Bucks have lost four of six, including 110-102 at Philadelphia on Friday night in a visit that wound up being more headline-grabbing for what happened after the 48-minute affair had ended.

Antetokounmpo had 25 points and 14 rebounds in the loss but shot poorly at the foul line for the third consecutive game, going just 4-for-15.

He responded by returning to the court well after the game for additional work, only to find the arena crew already partway into its nightly routine.

Antetokounmpo wound up pushing a ladder out of the way — it crashed to the court — to attempt to complete a 10-shot drill and found himself having to explain himself afterward following a run-in with the 76ers’ Montrezl Harrell, who seized the Bucks star’s basketball.

Antetokounmpo got in eight of his 10 shots, then noted it’s not a technical flaw that’s resulted in him going 19-for-44 in his last three games.

The same could be said of the Bucks’ shooting in general. They have shot just 42.6 percent overall and 34.1 percent on 3-pointers in their last six games, during which they have lost to the Atlanta Hawks twice, San Antonio Spurs and 76ers by an average of 15 points.

The Bucks have yet to see the Trail Blazers this season. When the clubs last met on Valentine’s Day nine months ago, Portland came away with a 122-107 road win, taking advantage of Antetokounmpo’s absence.

The Trail Blazers didn’t have Lillard in that one, and like Antetokounmpo, he probably wishes he could have his last performance back. He shot just 2-for-14 overall and 1-for-12 on 3-pointers in a 118-113 home loss to the Utah Jazz on Saturday night before leaving in the third quarter with right calf tightness.

The team said Sunday that an MRI exam detected a Grade 1 strain to the soleus muscle in the lower leg. Lillard will be re-evaluated in one to two weeks.

Lillard’s 13-point effort was six points fewer than any previous game this season.

Lillard indicated afterward he planned to take some time off to get the lingering issue right. He had played in six of Portland’s seven games since sitting out four in a row bridging October and November with the same problem.

Anfernee Simons exploded for 31 points in Lillard’s absence in February’s trip to Milwaukee. He had a team-high 23 points Saturday against Utah.

Portland, which has lost three of four since a 9-3 start, will play its next four games on the road. The trip continues at Cleveland, New York and Brooklyn, forcing the club to spend Thanksgiving away from home.

NBA Preview: Boston Celtics at Chicago Bulls

0

The Boston Celtics boast the NBA’s best record and enter Monday’s visit to the Chicago Bulls on a nine-game winning streak.

Boston’s surge began at the expense of the Bulls, whom the Celtics defeated 123-119 on Nov. 4. The team has found its stride — not to mention an even keel — ever since.

Chicago surely can attest to that last part.

After trailing by 19 points in the third quarter of Friday’s game against the visiting Orlando Magic, the Bulls tied the game early in the fourth and grabbed the lead down the stretch.

Nikola Vucevic missed a pair of free throws with 12.2 seconds to go, however, and the Bulls lost an opportunity to extend the lead beyond two points. Orlando’s Jalen Suggs took advantage, swishing a game-winning 3-pointer in the closing seconds to send Chicago to its fourth straight loss and sixth defeat in seven games.

While Vucevic shouldered the blame, Bulls leader DeMar DeRozan, who scored 41 points, stressed that Chicago needs to play better across the board.

Monday begins a stretch that will see the Bulls play eight of their next 10 games against foes with records above .500.

Second-leading scorer Zach LaVine will aim to regroup after coach Billy Donovan benched him for the final 3:43 against Orlando as LaVine struggled to 1-for-14 shooting.

Boston drilled 20 3-pointers during Friday’s 117-109 victory at New Orleans, including a 10-for-16 run from deep in the first quarter.

Jayson Tatum had a double-double of 19 points and 10 assists and Brown joined him with 27 points and 10 rebounds. Derrick White had 26 points while Al Horford scored 18.

Boston’s slimmest margin of victory during the winning streak is three points, while its largest is 25.

* There have been 23 hat tricks scored on 15-game days, including two the last time 30 teams played: Steven Stamkos (3-0—3; TBL) and Cole Caufield (3-0—3; MTL) each did so April 29, 2022. Caufield became the fifth rookie with a hat trick on a 15-game day, with the last before him also achieved by a Canadiens forward – on April 6, 2019, Ryan Poehling scored three goals in his NHL debut as Bob Cole called the final play-by-play of his half-century career.

* A player has scored four goals on a 15-game day three times: Alex Ovechkin (Oct. 7, 2017; 4-0—4 w/ WSH), Mark Jankowski (April 7, 2018; 4-0—4 w/ CGY) and Jack Eichel (Nov. 16, 2019; 4-0—4 w/ BUF).

* The most goals scored by one team on a 15-game day is 10 (including shootout-deciding goals), a mark set by the Canadiens on April 29, 2022 in a 10-2 victory against the Panthers.

* Goaltenders have combined for 38 shutouts on 15-game days, with James Reimer holding the benchmark for highest save count in one of those performances. Reimer made 38 saves Dec. 23, 2017, to backstop the Panthers to a 1-0 victory against the Senators.

* Among goaltenders to play at least one game this season, 17 have recorded a shutout on a 15-game day. Marc-Andre Fleury leads the way with three such performances, while Darcy Kuemper and Martin Jones also have multiple. Details for every shutout on a 15-game day are on page 5 in the PDF below.

* There has been one tandem shutout on a 15-game day, with Ben Bishop (12 saves) and Marek Schwarz (5 saves) combining for the feat in a 4-0 Blues victory against the Panthers on Oct. 25, 2008.

NBA Preview: San Antonio Spurs at Los Angeles Lakers

0

Seeking third straight win, Lakers host ice-cold Spurs

The Los Angeles Lakers will be in search of their season-best third win in a row when they host the struggling and road-weary San Antonio Spurs on Sunday.

Sunday’s game is just the third in an eight-day stretch for Los Angeles, while the Spurs will be on the second game of a back-to-back that began with a loss to the Clippers on Saturday. They will be playing their fifth game, all on the road, in a span of seven days.

The Lakers have won two straight outings, tying their best streak of the season, with the latest a 128-121 victory over short-handed Detroit on Friday.

Anthony Davis racked up 38 points (16 of them in the fourth quarter), 16 rebounds and four blocked shots and Lonnie Walker IV added 17 points.

Austin Reaves scored 16 points, Wenyen Gabriel tallied 15 and Russell Westbrook had 10 points and 12 assists off the bench as the Lakers shot 55.1 percent from the floor and went 35 of 40 from the free-throw line. Los Angeles was up by just two points with 7:39 to play in a back-and-forth game before securing the victory with a 14-6 run over the ensuing 3 1/2 minutes.

It was just the fourth victory of the season for Los Angeles, which had endured a pair of five-game losing streaks.

The Lakers played on Friday without LeBron James, who sat out his third consecutive game with an adductor strain. James’ participation in Sunday’s contest will be a game-time decision.

The Spurs will close out their disastrous road trip looking for their first victory since Nov. 11 after a 119-97 loss to the Clippers on Saturday. Jakob Poeltl led San Antonio with 20 points while Doug McDermott scored 13, Keldon Johnson had 11 and Tre Jones amassed 10 assists in the loss.

San Antonio played without Devin Vassell, who missed the game while nursing an ankle injury.

The Spurs have lost nine of their past 10 outings and have fallen to a season-worst five games under .500. San Antonio never led in Saturday’s contest, which followed setbacks on the road in San Francisco against the Warriors, in Portland and in Sacramento. Those four defeats have been by an average of 21 points per game.

Even though he had just four points in San Antonio’s loss Saturday and has never had more than 14 in his 16 games with the Spurs, 19-year-old Jeremy Sochan is considered one of the future cornerstones of the franchise. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is giving Sochan a lot of trust and some tough assignments, and the rookie is not shy of taking on the task.

NBA Preview: Denver Nuggets at Dallas Mavericks

0

The Dallas Mavericks had so much fun playing the visiting Denver Nuggets on Friday night that they are happy to do it again on Sunday.

Dallas cruised to a 28-point win in the first of two games in three days with Denver, but it comes with a bit of an asterisk. The Nuggets played without three starters, including two-time MVP Nikola Jokic, and it showed against the Mavericks.

Luka Doncic notched his fourth triple-double of the season (33 points, 12 rebounds, 11 assists) and the 50th of his career after sitting out a game for rest, and it looked easy for him and his teammates. Dallas led by as many as 31 against a short-handed Denver squad.

It doesn’t look like the Nuggets will have Jokic back for the rematch. Coach Michael Malone said Friday night Jokic will remain in health and safety protocols for the third straight game, as will Jamal Murray, who missed Friday’s game.

In addition to Michael Porter Jr., the only other starter with a chance to play is Aaron Gordon, who has missed the past two games with a non-COVID illness.

Denver had no success in stopping Doncic and little in containing Christian Wood, who scored 28 points in the 127-99 win.

The Nuggets need someone to step up if they’re going to flip the script Sunday night. Porter has struggled in the two games Jokic has missed, scoring a total of 15 points and shooting a combined 5-for-23 from the field.

The previous game, a win at Chicago last Sunday, Porter scored 31 points.

Jokic, Gordon and Murray weren’t the only ones sidelined. Ish Smith has missed the last two games with a right calf strain, further depleting the bench. It did give Vlatko Cancar a chance for some minutes, and he logged 23 while scoring eight points.

Bones Hyland was the only reserve to score in double figures. He finished with 17 points on 5-of-16 shooting and was 3-for-11 from 3-point range.

NBA Preview: Golden State Warriors at Houston Rockets

0

There was little out of the ordinary in the Warriors’ 111-101 home victory over the New York Knicks on Friday.

It was a win that featured six Warriors scoring in double figures paced by Stephen Curry, who paired a team-high 24 points with 10 assists and now ranks third in the NBA in scoring.

Draymond Green added 10 points, nine rebounds, seven assists and two blocks. Klay Thompson scored 20 points on 8-for-16 shooting for the Warriors, who claimed their sixth consecutive win at Chase Center by springing to an 18-point lead behind their veteran starting unit.

What continues to bedevil the Warriors is their effort on the road, where they are winless in eight games. Golden State will be in Houston on Sunday to face the Rockets seeking their first road win.

The reigning champions have yet to muster the same consistency away from home. It’s been a bizarre set of circumstances for a team with such a strong veteran presence and one accustomed to dizzying levels of success. The victory over the Knicks provided another snapshot of how the Warriors perform when they are at their best.

The Rockets would appear to be a likely candidate to hand deliver the Warriors their first road triumph. Houston coughed up a 20-point first-half lead in falling to the Indiana Pacers 99-91 at home on Friday, leaving the Rockets with only one victory at Toyota Center this season.

Houston continues to struggle to cobble together complete performances. For a second consecutive game, the Rockets held an opponent below 100 points, even limiting the Pacers to just 10 points in the opening period. However, the Rockets labored initiating their offense without guard Kevin Porter Jr., who was sidelined by lower left back soreness. While Porter has committed an NBA-high 60 turnovers, he leads the Rockets averaging 5.8 assists per game.

Porter is listed as doubtful for Sunday.

Without Porter, the Rockets recorded more turnovers (17) than assists (15) against the Pacers. Their primary ballhandlers in his absence combined for 10 turnovers, with second-year guard Jalen Green responsible for six while Eric Gordon and Daishen Nix posted two apiece.

The Rockets rank 28th in assists per game (21.3) and 26th in assist percentage (55.8) with or without Porter.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat at Cleveland Cavaliers

0

Fresh off snapping a five-game losing skid, the Cleveland Cavaliers continue a four-game homestand on Sunday when they welcome the visiting Miami Heat.

Miami continues a four-game road trip with Sunday’s contest, coming in having dropped its first two decisions at Toronto and Washington.

Friday’s 107-106 overtime loss against the Wizards exposed the Heat’s struggles with depth. Just seven players dressed, six of whom logged more than 30 minutes.

As Friday’s contest wore on, the Miami offense sputtered with a pair of second-half quarters scoring fewer than 20 points, followed by only two points in overtime.

Kyle Lowry recorded a triple-double with 24 points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds, while Max Strus added 22 points — but shot just 3-of-14 from beyond the 3-point arc.

The last of Strus’ misses came out of a timeout on the game’s final possession.

Miami faces Cleveland still facing numerous roster questions. Bam Adebayo and Jimmy Butler, both of whom sat on Friday, are listed as day-to-day with knee injuries.

Butler leads the Heat at 20.9 points per game, while Adebayo is averaging 19.1 points and 9.1 rebounds per game. Tyler Herro, averaging 19.6 points and 2.4 made 3-pointers a contest, missed the Washington game with an ankle injury.

Duncan Robinson, Dewayne Dedmon and Gabe Vincent are also all listed as day-to-day.

Cleveland, meanwhile, opened its four-game homestand on Friday with a 132-122, double-overtime defeat of Charlotte. The win was the Cavaliers’ first since Nov. 6 when they concluded an eight-game winning streak.

The Hornets very nearly extended Cleveland’s losing skid, rallying from a 16-point second-half deficit to force extra frames.

Garland’s 41 points came less than a week after he finished with 51 points in a Nov. 13 loss to Minnesota. The 51-point outpouring set the NBA’s single-game scoring-high — for about an hour, anyway. Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid scored 59 points the same night.

Donovan Mitchell added 34 points in the win on Friday. Mitchell is one of just five players in the league averaging north of 31 points per game with at least 11 games played.

While the backcourt duo paced the offense, Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff praised the total-team effort — particularly in the overtimes.

NBA Preview: Memphis Grizzlies at Brooklyn Nets

0

Kyrie Irving’s last appearance with the Brooklyn Nets occurred on Nov. 1 as controversy swirled around the team.

His next appearance is likely Sunday night when the Nets return home from a four-game road trip to face the Memphis Grizzlies, who will be without star Ja Morant.

Irving is expected to return after sitting out Brooklyn’s past eight games. His last game was a four-point performance when the Nets folded in the fourth quarter against the Chicago Bulls in Jacque Vaughn’s head coaching debut after taking over from Steve Nash.

Irving was the focal point of controversy for posting a link to an anti-Semitic film on Oct. 27, and was handed at least a five-game suspension when he did not apologize following a contentious media session at practice on Nov. 3.

When the Nets suspended him, they stipulated Irving must complete several steps, including meeting with commissioner Adam Silver. They met last week, and Silver said he did not think Irving held anti-Semitic beliefs.

Since Irving’s last appearance, the Nets are 5-3 and — even with allowing 153 points Tuesday at Sacramento — they are defending better recently.

Through Nov. 1, the Nets were allowing 118.8 points, 47.0 percent shooting and 41.2 percent from 3-point range. Since then, Brooklyn is allowing 104 points, 42.3 percent shooting and 35.8 percent from behind the arc.

Brooklyn returns after splitting a four-game West Coast trip. The Nets ended the trek by rallying from an 11-point deficit when Royce O’Neale capped his first career triple-double by tipping in the miss of a Durant jumper with seven-tenths of a second remaining in a 109-107 win Thursday.

Durant scored 35 points and has scored at least 25 in each game. He is the first player with such a streak since Michael Jordan did it in 16 straight to start 1988-89. The last player to achieve the feat in 17 straight was Rick Barry for the first 25 games of the 1966-67 season for the San Francisco Warriors.

Memphis snapped its second losing streak of the season by earning a 121-110 win over the visiting Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday when Jaren Jackson Jr. scored 25 in his second game back from right foot surgery.

Morant scored 19 before exiting late in the fourth quarter with a tweaked ankle. The star guard was diagnosed Saturday with a Grade 1 left ankle sprain and will be evaluated on a week-to-week basis.

Tyus Jones will likely get the start as the Grizzlies have yet to play a game with their expected starting five of Morant, Desmond Bane, Dillon Brooks, Jackson and center Steven Adams.

NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons at Sacramento Kings

0

Teams hoping to become lucky losers in the 2022 NBA Draft lottery get an opportunity to show off their consolation prizes to one another when the Detroit Pistons visit the Sacramento Kings on Sunday afternoon.

The Pistons and Kings both finished with bottom-seven records last season, giving each at least some optimism that luck could land them the No. 1 pick in the draft.

It didn’t pan out. The Kings moved up from No. 7 to No. 4, which was significantly better than the fate that befell the Pistons, who fell from co-favorite to the fifth spot.

After Paolo Banchero (Orlando), Chet Holmgren (Oklahoma City) and Jabari Smith Jr. (Houston) were selected, the Kings had their choice of Iowa forward Keegan Murray or Purdue guard Jaden Ivey.

Sacramento chose Murray, allowing the Pistons to snatch Ivey.

So far: Advantage, Pistons. While the Kings have gotten off to a much faster start in the win column, Ivey has thus far exceeded Murray in stats.

Playing alongside Cade Cunningham until the top pick of the 2021 draft injured his shin recently, Ivey has scored in double figures in 15 of his 16 games and recorded double-doubles in three. His 17 points and five assists in Friday’s 128-121 road loss to the Los Angeles Lakers left his season averages at 16.3 and 4.2, respectively.

Ivey went head-to-head with No. 1 overall pick Banchero in the opener and contributed 19 points to a Pistons win. He has yet to face Holmgren, who is injured and out for the season, or Smith, and on Sunday gets his first shot at Murray.

The Kings’ prize rookie has been bothered by a sore back and sat out Thursday’s 130-112 home win over the San Antonio Spurs. The injury is not considered to be serious and he is probable to return Sunday.

Murray has averaged 12.0 points and 3.7 rebounds for a team that has been an early surprise under new coach Mike Brown. The Kings have rebounded from an 0-4 start to win eight of 10, including their last five in a row.

They’ll be looking to complete a perfect 4-0 homestand against the Pistons, having already beaten Golden State, Brooklyn and San Antonio in the past week.

Having denied their fans a first-hand view of the playoffs since 2006, the Kings have taken a “Win One For Sacramento” approach to the season.

The Pistons have lost six in a row, including two straight to open their current six-game Western swing. Cunningham remains out indefinitely with a shin injury that is being reported as a stress fracture that might require surgery.

NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets at Washington Wizards

0

The Charlotte Hornets and Washington Wizards are coming off Friday night games that had something in common, as neither was decided in regulation.

From there, there were different routes.

So expect the Wizards to be in a little better shape when the teams meet Sunday night in Washington.

The Wizards beat the visiting Miami Heat 107-106 in overtime for their fifth victory in their last six games.

The Hornets have to search for any positives, particularly after a bizarre double-overtime loss at Cleveland.

Charlotte came back from 10 down in the final 45 seconds of regulation and then was in position to win in the first overtime before ultimately suffering its 10th loss in the last 11 games.

Washington’s stretch of positive results began with a 108-100 victory Nov. 7 at Charlotte.

Kyle Kuzma of the Wizards had a team-high 20 points in that game, beginning a stretch of four outings with 20 or more points in a six-game span.

It’s no wonder Kuzma’s confidence has been soaring. He hit a game-tying 3-pointer to get Friday night’s game into overtime.

The Hornets often bog down offensively late in the games. On Friday against Cleveland, they perked up in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cavaliers 35-23.

Charlotte reserve center Nick Richards produced his third career double-double. That came in part because of a career-best 14 rebounds.

More consistency from players such as Richards would be a boost for the Hornets, whose roster tends to have players coming and going in terms of availability. Point guard LaMelo Ball is out again with an ankle injury and has played in only three games.

On the plus side, Gordon Hayward (shoulder) returned to action Friday night.

Hayward was one of four Charlotte players to log 39 or more minutes, so the wear and tear factor might be worth monitoring. Even though it’s early in the season, several of the Hornets have been called upon for extensive duty because of the evolving roster.

While Charlotte’s roster seems limited to some degree, the Wizards are turning to all sorts of producers. Taj Gibson didn’t play in the first half Friday against Miami, then showed up and made key contributions.

Sunday’s game marks the last in Washington’s six-game homestand. The Wizards are 4-1 so far. Three of Charlotte’s four wins this season have come on the road.
