The Devils extended their season-high winning streak to 12 games, after Jersey’s team earned a 5-1 win at Ottawa on Saturday in a matinee contest. The Devils’ longest winning streak is 13 games in a single season via Feb. 26, 2001, to Mar. 23, 2001, which also witnessed the last
time the team won 12 consecutive games. Jersey’s team outscored opponents 61-25 (+36) over the 13-game winning streak noted above. Entering Monday’s anticipated affair with Edmonton, the Devils outscored opponents 51-22 (+29). Jersey’s team earned an eight-game winning streak on the road for the first time since Oct. 8, 2009, to Nov. Nov. 7. That streak extended to nine games, which is the second longest road winning streak in franchise history. The team’s longest road winning streak in a single season is 10 games via Feb. 27, 2001, to Apr. 7, 2001. Jersey’s team swept its second three-game Canadian road trip. For the first time in franchise history the Devis swept Montreal, Ottawa and Toronto on the same roadie. Per NHL Pr, “each of New Jersey’s past six road games have been victories against Canadian clubs – that makes them the first U.S.-based team in NHL history with a road winning streak of 6+ games, all against Canadian clubs. New Jersey represents the 34th instance in League history of a U.S.-based team playing 6+ consecutive road games, all against Canadian clubs; previously, the longest winning streak by those clubs was five games (Boston in 2010-11: 5-0-0 in Canada from Feb. 18 – March 1, 2011).” The team enters tonight’s contest with a five-game winning-streak at home dating to Oct. 28, vs Colorado. The franchise record for winning streaks at home is 11 consecutive games, which was earned from Feb. 9, 2009, to Mar. 20. The Devils next home win will mark 300 career regular-season wins at Prudential Center since the building opened in 2007-08: 299-211-75 Head coach Lindy Ruff extended a career-high 11-game winning streak to 12 games, while his prior was 10 games earned in 2006-07 with Buffalo. The Devils are now 8-0-0 vs Canadian opponents this season. The second longest winning streak this season in the NHL: Vegas: Oct. 24, 2022, to Nov. 10 (9-0-0). The Devils are one of eight teams since 2019-20 that earned a winning streak of 10-or-more games in a single season:

FLA, Mar. 29, 2022-Apr. 23, 13, W

QUICK HITS
Erik Haula earned his first goal of the season at Ottawa, which snapped the Finnish native’s 17-game goal drought. Haula experienced 17 consecutive games without a goal this season, which tied his longest stretch (4 times, prior) without scoring a goal in a single season. The last time Haula experienced 17 consecutive games without scoring a goal in a single season was Jan. 14, 2021, to Feb. 23, as a member of Nashville (0g-4a=4PTS). The Finnish native became the ninth different Devils skater who earned a power-play goal this season. Last season, after the team’s first 18 games of 2021-22, Jersey witnessed six different skaters earn a PPG. Haula entails points in consecutive games (1g-1a=2 PTS). Nico Hischier enters his third season as team captain. Damon Severson is the longest-tenured Devil via 2014-15. Dawson Mercer is the first player in franchise history to wear No. 91. COACH’S CORNER

The Swiss-born netminder logged a personal season-high 25 saves. Schmid’s career-high for saves in a single game is 27, which was earned on Jan. 31, at Toronto. Vitek Vanecek won his eighth consecutive “decision” on Thursdayand became the third different goaltender in franchise history who earned a win in eight consecutive decisions:

M. Brodeur 6 times, last: 9-0-0, Nov. 17, 2007-Dec. 7
C. Terreri (8-0-0, Jan. 29, 1992-Feb. 18.
Vanecek is also the first Devils netminder who won five consecutive road games since both Martin Brodeur and Johan Hedberg earned the feat in 2011-12. The last Devils netminder to earn a six-game road winning streak was the great Martin Brodeur in 2009-10, when he finished with an 8-game road winning streak.

How about tonight’s ‘players’ to watch…for the first time this season the Devils experienced a game when both J. Hughes and J. Bratt didn’t earn a point in a contest via Saturday. The two look to display their speed and skill vs a high-flying Edmonton squad.

NBA Preview: New York Knicks at Oklahoma City Thunder

0

RJ Barrett said the shots are going to keep coming.

Barrett will try to end his most recent slump on Monday night when the Knicks visit the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second night of a back-to-back.

Over the Knicks’ past five games, Barrett is just 20 of 76 (26.3 percent) from the floor and 2 of 25 (8 percent) from 3-point range.

In Sunday’s loss at Phoenix, Barrett was 3 of 11 from the floor, including 1 of 3 from beyond the arc.

Barrett’s recent struggles began in New York’s 145-135 loss to the Thunder on Nov. 13, though he’s struggled much of the season. Barrett, who is in his fourth season, is shooting a career-low 39.1 percent from the floor.

In the first meeting against Oklahoma City this year, Barrett was 2 of 10 from the field and finished with four points — his lowest-scoring performance in nearly a year.

While the Knicks are trying to get Barrett going, Oklahoma City will look to get Shai Gilgeous-Alexander back to being the kind of player he’s been for much of the season.

In Oklahoma City’s 121-110 loss at Memphis on Friday night, Gilgeous-Alexander had a season-low 15 points on 6-of-18 shooting. But he said he didn’t feel like he was getting worn down.

Still, the Thunder’s four-game trip was successful for Gilgeous-Alexander, who averaged 32.8 points, 7.3 assists, 5.3 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.3 blocks.

Oklahoma City will be short-handed vs. the Knicks, with Aleksej Pokusevski, Tre Mann, Isaiah Joe, and Darius Bazley listed as out because of injuries.

Pokusevski is the newest addition to the Thunder’s injury report after suffering a left-ankle sprain in the second quarter of Friday’s loss. Pokusevski also injured that same ankle earlier in the week against Boston but returned in that game.

Joe missed that game with right-knee soreness while Bazley (right-ankle sprain) and Mann (lower-back soreness) have missed five and three consecutive games, respectively.

The Knicks were without forward Cam Reddish, who is dealing with a groin injury, in Sunday’s 116-95 loss to Phoenix.

Mitchell Robinson returned Sunday after missing eight games with a knee sprain, recording two points, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal off the bench.

The Thunder have won the past three meetings between the teams.

Monday’s game will begin a three-game homestand for Oklahoma City and will wrap up a five-game trip for New York.

After winning the first two games on their trip, the Knicks have dropped back-to-back games.

NBA Preview: Golden State Warriors at New Orleans Pelicans

0

The Golden State Warriors finally won a road game.

Now they’ll try to make in two in a row when they visit the New Orleans Pelicans on Monday night.

The defending NBA champion Warriors lost their first eight road games of the season before they defeated the host Houston Rockets 127-120 on Sunday night. Klay Thompson scored a season-high 41 points and Stephen Curry added 33 for Golden State.

Thompson made 14 of 23 field-goal attempts, including 10 of 13 3-pointers. Curry finished 11 of 20 from the field, including 7 of 14 from long distance. He added a season-high 15 assists, one less than his career high.

On Monday night, the Warriors likely will face Zion Williamson, who said he expects to be back in the lineup.

The Pelicans’ leading scorer, who is averaging 23.5 points a game, has missed the past three games because of a bruised foot. New Orleans won the first two games without him before losing to the visiting Boston Celtics 117-109 on Friday night.

Trey Murphy III, who had started in Williamson’s place and made 8 of 12 3-pointers combined in wins against Memphis and Chicago, suffered a bruised foot of his own against the Celtics and is day to day.

The Celtics made 10 3-pointers in building a 40-25 lead at the end of the first quarter. They made just 10 more from beyond the arc the rest of the way but never relinquished the lead.

The Pelicans are moving on from the NBA runners-up to the NBA champions.

One of Golden State’s road losses came against the Pelicans — 114-105 on Nov. 4.

The Warriors played without Curry, Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins because of injury maintenance.

NBA Preview: Miami Heat at Minnesota Timberwolves

0

The Minnesota Timberwolves will aim to stretch their season-best winning streak to four games when they host the injury-ravaged Miami Heat on Monday night.

The Timberwolves will attempt to move above .500 for the first time since Oct. 30 against a Heat squad that will be without star Jimmy Butler for the third straight game.

Minnesota averaged 122.3 points while winning the final three contests of a four-game trip. The Timberwolves defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 112-109 in Saturday’s excursion-ending game.

The fourth quarter was shaky as Minnesota saw a 15-point lead with under nine minutes to play trimmed to one with 29.1 seconds left before holding on.

Minnesota coach Chris Finch was pleased with the escape but not with the late-game play.

Minnesota’s Anthony Edwards had 25 points, marking the third time he has scored at least 25 in the past four games. He leads the Timberwolves with a 22.1 scoring average this season.

Karl-Anthony Towns is Minnesota’s second-leading scorer with a 21.3 average. But he had just 12 points Saturday after averaging 29.5 over the previous two games.

The Timberwolves will look to beat Miami for the eighth time in the past nine meetings and might be catching the Heat at the right time.

Butler is back in Miami due to his knee injury, and sharpshooter Tyler Herro (ankle) is expected to miss his eighth consecutive game. Gabe Vincent (knee) is moving closer to a return, but fellow guard Victor Oladipo (knee) remains without a timetable.

The absences hurt on Sunday night as the Heat were pounded 113-87 by the Cleveland Cavaliers to fall to 0-3 on a four-game trip. Miami has lost its past six road contests.

Coach Erik Spoelstra readily acknowledged his club couldn’t compete at Cleveland’s level. The 87 points were a season low.

Miami trailed 95-64 after three quarters of a contest that guard Max Strus termed “a good old-fashioned (butt) kicking.”

Bam Adebayo scored 21 points to lead the Heat and Caleb Martin added 17. But Miami shot just 38.8 percent from the field and a porous 6 of 31 (19.4 percent) from 3-point range. The Heat also were outrebounded 49-30.

Veteran point guard Kyle Lowry had just nine points on 2-of-10 shooting from the field in 31 minutes against Cleveland. The 36-year-old played 51 minutes two nights earlier in a 107-106 overtime loss to the Washington Wizards and scored a season-high 24 points.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic at Indiana Pacers

0

The red-hot Indiana Pacers will look to extend their current winning streak to five games and seek a second straight win over the Orlando Magic on Monday in Indianapolis.

The same two teams played on Saturday, with Indiana outlasting Orlando for its sixth win in the past seven games, 114-113.

Tyrese Haliburton and Myles Turner both recorded double-doubles in the win, Haliburton with 22 points and 14 assists and Turner with 20 points and 11 rebounds. The duo helped pace Indiana to its fourth single-digit-margin win in the month of November.

The Pacers also continued to show off their depth with the reserve duo of Aaron Nesmith and Bennedict Mathurin going for 19 and 12 points, respectively.

On the season, Mathurin is Indiana’s second-leading scorer at 19.1 points per game, behind only Haliburton’s 20.6 points per game. Mathurin has come off the bench in all 15 games.

Indiana weathered three 20-point-plus scoring efforts from Orlando’s Franz Wagner (29 points), Bol Bol (22 points) and Mo Bamba (21 points) in Saturday’s win, which was the Magic’s third loss in the last four games.

Orlando was playing the second leg of a back-to-back on Saturday, the second game in a brief, three-game road swing that opened Friday with a thrilling win at Chicago.

After giving up a 19-point lead to the Bulls, the Magic rallied in the closing minute to set the stage for Jalen Suggs’ game-winning 3-pointer.

Orlando nearly scored another win in the closing seconds on Saturday, but both Wagner and Bol missed looks at the rim.

Wendell Carter Jr., who played Friday against the Bulls, missed Saturday’s game with a foot injury. Gary Harris also sat against the Pacers after contributing seven points in 24 minutes at Chicago.

The absences compounded season-long personnel issues for Orlando, which remains without No. 1 overall draft pick Paolo Banchero due to an ankle injury.

Banchero — who is averaging 23.5 points and 8.3 rebounds per game — last played on Nov. 7. The Orlando Sentinel reports he will miss another seven to 10 days.

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawks @ Cleveland Cavaliers

0

Hawks try to maintain good vibes on road, visit Cavs

The Atlanta Hawks will try to continue their road success on Monday when they travel to Cleveland, where the Cavs have lost only once this season.

Atlanta has won two of its last three road games, most recently handing Milwaukee its first home loss of the season last Monday. The Hawks are 4-3 overall on the road this season. But Cleveland is 6-1 at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse, their best start at home since the 2016-17 season.

Atlanta is coming off a dramatic 124-122 overtime win over Toronto on Saturday in which rookie AJ Griffin got a lob pass from Trae Young and dropped in the game-winner at the buzzer. Cleveland has won two straight after Sunday’s 113-87 victory over the Miami Heat.

This is the first of three meetings between the two teams this season. Atlanta won three of four games against Cleveland last year and has won three in a row in the series.

Cleveland had a hard time slowing down Young last year. He averaged 32.5 points and scored 41 in a victory on Feb. 15. Young had 33 points and 12 assists against Toronto and is averaging 27.3 points and 9.5 assists on the season.

Dejounte Murray is averaging 21.1 points and 7.4 assists and Clint Capela is averaging 11.5 points, 11.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks and has a team-leading eight double-doubles.

Atlanta has scored at least 100 points in each of its first 16 games for just the fourth time in franchise history, and in 37 straight, the longest active streak in the NBA.

Cleveland’s Darius Garland scored 25 points in the win over Miami. He is averaging 35 points over the last four games, which included a 51-point performance against Minnesota on Nov. 13.

Garland had four 3-pointers on Sunday, which moved him past Mo Williams and into sole possession of 10th place on the Cavs’ all-time 3-point list. He’s now made 418 shots from deep, while Williams sunk 414.

Donovan Mitchell, who leads the team with 29.9 points per game, has scored 30-plus in nine of his last 14 games.

The Cavs may be without Caris LeVert, who sat out the second half of Sunday’s game with a left ankle injury. Cleveland is missing Kevin Love, who sustained a hairline thumb fracture on Friday, and Dean Wade has missed five games with a knee infection.

Williams has five games with at least two rushing touchdowns this season and he is the fourth player since 2000 with multiple rushing touchdowns in at least five of his team’s first 10 games of a season, joining SHAUN ALEXANDER (six games in 2005), Pro Football Hall of Famer LADAINIAN TOMLINSON (six in 2006) and PRIEST HOLMES (five in 2003).

Hutchinson has 5.5 sacks and two interceptions this season and is the second player since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic, with at least five sacks and two interceptions in his first 10 career games, joining LESLIE O’NEAL (1986).
  • Dallas running back TONY POLLARD had 189 scrimmage yards (109 receiving, 80 rushing) and two touchdown receptions and linebacker MICAH PARSONS recorded two sacks and a forced fumble in the Cowboys’ 40-3 win over Minnesota.

Pollard is the fourth player since 1990 with at least 75 rushing yards, 100 receiving yards and two touchdown receptions in a single game, joining JOEY GALLOWAY (November 12, 1995), TODD GURLEY (December 24, 2017) and Pro Football Hall of Famer LADAINIAN TOMLINSON (December 7, 2003).

Parsons recorded his eighth-career game with at least two sacks, tied with SHAWNE MERRIMAN (eight games) and Pro Football Hall of Famer REGGIE WHITE (eight) for the second-most such games by a player in his first two career seasons since 1982, when the individual sack became an official statistic. Only ALDON SMITH (nine games) has more.
  • Las Vegas wide receiver DAVANTE ADAMS recorded seven receptions for 141 yards and two touchdowns, including the 35-yard game-winning touchdown catch in overtime of the Raiders’ 22-16 comeback victory in Denver.

Adams has three career overtime touchdowns, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer LADAINIAN TOMLINSON (three) for the most overtime touchdowns in NFL history.

Adams, who has 10 touchdown receptions this season, is the fourth player in NFL history with at least 10 touchdown receptions in at least six of his first nine seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famers JERRY RICE (seven seasons), MARVIN HARRISON (six) and RANDY MOSS (six).
  • Other notable performances from Sunday include:
    • Buffalo quarterback JOSH ALLEN threw his 21st touchdown pass of the season in the Bills’ 31-23 win over Cleveland.

Allen has 159 career combined passing and rushing touchdowns (124 passing, 35 rushing), tied with PATRICK MAHOMES (159) for the third-most by a player in his first five seasons in NFL history. Only Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO (171) and CAM NEWTON (160) have more.
    • Cincinnati quarterback JOE BURROW passed for 355 yards and four touchdowns with a 104.1 rating in the Bengals’ 37-30 win at Pittsburgh.

Burrow has 10,189 passing yards in 36 career games, tied with Pro Football Hall of Famer KURT WARNER (36 games) for the third-fewest games to reach 10,000 career passing yards in NFL history. Only PATRICK MAHOMES (34 games) and JUSTIN HERBERT (35) reached the mark in fewer games.
  • Chicago quarterback JUSTIN FIELDS totaled 238 yards (153 passing, 85 rushing) and two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing) in Atlanta on Sunday.

Evgeni Malkin celebrated his 1,000th career game with a goal while Sidney Crosby had a four-point night as the Penguins improved to 97-9-5 when both players score.

* Blue Jackets netminder Daniil Tarasov set a mark for the most saves in a game by a rookie so far this season with a 47-save performance Sunday, spotlighted on the most recent edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates.

* New Jersey will aim to win its 13th straight game and match its franchise record for longest winning streak when the club hosts its Hockey Fights Cancer Night during a 10-game Monday.

MALKIN CELEBRATES 1,000TH GAME WITH A GOAL
On the night the Blackhawks raised Marian Hossa’s No. 81 jersey to the rafters, Evgeni Malkin (1-0—1) had his own reason to celebrate as he scored in his 1,000th career game and helped Pittsburgh (9-7-3, 21 points) earn a win in Chicago for the first time since Feb. 27, 2009.

* Malkin became just the second player in Penguins history to skate in 1,000 career games with the club, joining captain Sidney Crosby (1,127 GP), as well as the 64th player in NHL history to skate in at least 1,000 contests with one team.

* Crosby (1-3—4), who already owns the most four-point outings among active skaters (37), recorded his fifth three-plus point performance of the season, matching Connor McDavid and Mikko Rantanen for the most among all players. It also marked the 59th three-assist game of Crosby’s career, tied with Steve Yzerman and Jaromir Jagr for the 10th most in NHL history.

ICYMI: Malkin’s teammates paid homage to his unique pre-game warmup routine, getting loose “Geno style.”

ROOKIE TARASOV MAKES 47 SAVES ON #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES

A 47-save performance from Blue Jackets rookie netminder Daniil Tarasov helped him earn his second career win and was highlighted on Sunday’s edition of #NHLStats: Live Updates. Only four goaltenders this season have recorded more saves in a game: Anton Forsberg (53 on Oct. 29), Andrei Vasilevskiy (52 on Nov. 3), Anthony Stolarz (48 on Nov. 5) and Carter Hart (48 on Oct. 27).

A BUSY MONDAY UP AHEAD

Twenty teams will be in action to open the week on a busy Monday night, with no shortage of lengthy streaks on the line as the Devils, along with Mitchell Marner and Jason Robertson can all extend double-digit runs.

* Marner, who has found the score sheet in each of his past 12 games, will aim to match his career-high point streak Monday (also 13 GP from March 15 – April 9, 2022). In fact, only six players in Maple Leafs history have recorded a longer point streak than 13 contests. Marner can also become the fifth skater in the past 30 years to record multiple 13-plus game point streaks in a calendar year – he would join Patrick Kane in 2019 (20 GP & 15 GP), Leon Draisaitl in 2019 (14 GP & 13 GP), Dave Andreychuk in 1992 (18 GP &16 GP) and Pierre Turgeon in 1992 (18 GP & 13 GP).

* Robertson can become the ninth different player in Stars/North Stars history to record a point in 12 or more straight games should he find the score sheet when the Stars welcome the Avalanche and the first since Patrick Sharp in 2015-16 (12 GP). Only three players in franchise history have recorded a point streak of 12-plus contests at age 23 or younger: Brian Bellows (20 GP in 1985-86), Steve Payne (13 GP in 1979-80) and Jude Drouin (15 GP in 1970-71).

* The Devils come into Monday’s contest riding a 12-game winning streak and can match the longest run in franchise history (13-0-0 in 2000-01). New Jersey is scoring 4.25 goals per game since the start of their run on Oct. 25 (51 GF in 12 GP) – the best pace among all teams over that span. Should the Devils keep up the pace and score at least four more against the Oilers, they would establish their highest-scoring 13-game stretch in more than two decades when they recorded 61 goals during part of their franchise-best win streak in 2000-01.

KARLSSON CLOSES IN ON 30-POINT MARK OF THE SEASON
Erik Karlsson (11-17—28 in 20 GP), who tops his club along with all defensemen in points, will welcome his former Senators to SAP Center just two points shy of 30 points in 2022-23 – he’s recorded more multi-point outings so far this season (9 GP) than games without a point (7 GP). Should Karlsson reach 30 points, he would require the fewest contests to hit the benchmark in a campaign by a Sharks skater.

NBA Preview: Utah Jazz at Los Angeles Clippers

0

Jazz hope to keep overachieving vs. Clippers

One month into the season, the Western Conference is up for grabs. Seven teams entered Sunday tied for the fewest losses (six), and the top 10 teams were within three games of each other.

Nobody could’ve guessed who’d be in sole possession of first place out West, though. After impressive back-to-back wins over Phoenix and Portland, the Utah Jazz claimed the top spot with a 12-6 record heading into Monday’s showdown in Los Angeles against the Clippers.

After Utah traded All-Stars Donovan Mitchell and Rudy Gobert along with steady starters Bojan Bogdanovic and Royce O’Neale, some might not have expected the Jazz to amass a dozen victories all season.

There were only positive things to say about the performance of Malik Beasley, who had a game-high 29 points. Jordan Clarkson was also impressive, scoring eight straight points in the final two minutes before finishing with 28, and All-Star candidate Lauri Markkanen followed his career-high 38 points versus the Suns with 23 points and 10 rebounds against Portland.

The Jazz have already picked up one win in Los Angeles over the Clippers this season. On Nov. 6, Utah earned a 110-102 victory paced by 23 points and five assists from Clarkson and 22 points from Collin Sexton to help overcome 20 turnovers.

That performance prompted Hardy to say, “Finding ways to win is fun.”

The Clippers, on the other hand, have been trying to find ways to win without their full complement of players.

Sure enough, the Clippers have won five of seven since that disappointing home loss to Utah and, though Paul George left Saturday’s game against the San Antonio Spurs early, Los Angeles has Kawhi Leonard back in the rotation.

Leonard has averaged 8.5 points, four assists and 23.5 minutes in two games, both wins, after being sidelined for 12 games with stiffness in his surgically repaired right knee.

George had 21 points in the Clippers’ 119-97 win over San Antonio, while Norman Powell added 26 off the bench and Reggie Jackson scored 20. The Clippers made 21 3-pointers, with George and Powell each draining five. John Wall dished out 15 assists.

George didn’t play in the second half after tweaking his calf. Lue said he’s “doing OK,” but hasn’t announced whether he’ll play Monday or not.

The Clippers are learning to play well with whomever they have on the court, though.

The Jazz will be without starting point guard Mike Conley, who left Saturday’s game with a left knee injury. Conley did not suffer major ligament damage, tests revealed, and is expected to miss at least two weeks, according to the Sports Gaming Journal.
