NHL Morning Skate – Nov. 22, 2022

0

Patrice Bergeron joined a rare list of players to record 1,000 points with the Bruins.

* The Devils earned their 13th consecutive victory to match a franchise record, while the Blues recorded a first-of-its-kind winning streak.

* The Sabres, Canadiens, Rangers and Kings are in action tonight before 30 teams take to the ice Wednesday during the NHL’s second 15-game day of the season.

BERGERON BECOMES FOURTH PLAYER TO RECORD 1,000 POINTS WITH BRUINS
Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron (409-591—1,000 in 1,235 GP) recorded the 1,000th point of his NHL career in familiar style – by assisting on a Brad Marchand goal – and was quickly mobbed by teammates to celebrate the occasion. Bergeron became the eighth active player to reach the milestone and the fourth skater to record 1,000 points with Boston (17-2-0, 34 points), which tops the NHL standings and extended its winning streak to seven games.

* Bergeron has assisted on 146 of 357 goals scored by Marchand. Only three other players in franchise history have assisted on as many goals scored by a teammate including Marchand, who has factored on 159 of 409 tallies by Bergeron. The others are Ken Hodge (160 of 459 goals by Phil Esposito) and Esposito (153 of 289 goals by Hodge).

DEVILS EXTEND WINNING STREAK TO 13 GAMES, MATCH FRANCHISE RECORD
Nico Hischier (0-3—3), Jesper Bratt (1-1—2), Dawson Mercer (1-1—2) and Jack Hughes (0-2—2) each had multiple points as the Metropolitan Division-leading Devils (16-3-0, 32 points) improved to 13-0-0 in their last 13 games and tied their franchise record for longest winning streak (also 13-0-0 from Feb. 26–March 23, 2001). There have been only six instances in NHL history of a team recording a winning streak of longer than 13 contests.

* Hischier (9-13—22 in 18 GP) and Hughes (7-14—21 in 19 GP) became the second and third New Jersey players to reach the 20-point mark this season, joining Bratt (8-16—24 in 19 GP). It marked the second instance in franchise history where the Devils had three 20-point scorers prior to their 20th game in a season, following 1986-87 (Pat VerbeekAaron Broten & Kirk Muller).

ICYMI: The Devils hosted their Hockey Fights Cancer Night at Prudential Center and Dougie Hamilton used a specially-designed stick for his friend Thea Roelofsen, who he met as a member of the Calgary Flames during the team’s annual hospital visits. Thea passed away in 2017, but the relationship he forged with her and her family carries a meaningful significance that has impacted Hamilton’s life. You can read more about Hamilton and Thea by clicking here.

ACCIARI SCORES 11 SECONDS IN AS ST. LOUIS SECURES SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIN
Noel Acciari opened the scoring at 0:11 of the first period and added an empty-net goal as the Blues (10-8-0, 20 points) earned their second straight win against the Ducks (also 6-2 W on Nov. 19) and seventh consecutive victory overall. St. Louis‘ run marks the longest winning streak in NHL history by a team immediately after they suffered losses in eight or more consecutive games.

MORE FROM THE CENTRAL DIVISION FEATURED IN #NHLSTATS: LIVE UPDATES
Mondays’ edition of Live Updates featured more notes from the 10-game slate, including three other Central Division teams gaining ground on the first-place Stars (11-5-3, 25 points):

Cody Glass got the game-deciding goal in the shootout for the Predators (9-8-2, 20 points) as David Poile became the first general manager in NHL history to reach the 1,500-win milestone. Lou Lamoriello, who ranks second on the League’s all-time list, kept pace with Poile via the Islanders rallying past the Maple Leafs on Monday.

* The Jets (11-5-1, 23 points) surrendered a 3-0 lead in the final 5:00 of regulation, but Josh Morrissey (2-0—2) scored the overtime winner as Winnipeg quelled Carolina’s comeback attempt. The Jets became the seventh team in NHL history to earn a win after relinquishing a three-goal lead in the final 5:00 of regulation, following the Canucks (March 31, 2018), Predators (Jan. 3, 2015), Canadiens (March 1, 2012), Hurricanes (Oct. 31, 2000), Flames (Nov. 1, 1991) and Rangers (Oct. 23, 1983).

Cale Makar (53-147—200 in 195 GP) opened the scoring for the Avalanche (11-5-1, 23 points) during their eventual shootout win versus the Stars and became the fastest defenseman in NHL history to reach the 200-point mark. Makareclipsed the previous mark set by former Dallas blueliner Sergei Zubov (36-165—201 in 207 GP), who recorded his first 200 points with the Rangers and Penguins before joining the Stars.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Lakers at Phoenix Suns

0

Anthony Davis is enjoying his best stretch of the season and the Los Angeles Lakers aim to extend their season-long winning streak to four games Tuesday night when they visit the Phoenix Suns.

Davis hadn’t reached the 30-point mark prior to the current run but he is averaging 35 points a game during the span after outings of 37, 38 and 30 points.

Davis also is averaging 17.3 rebounds during a stretch in which the Lakers are playing without LeBron James (adductor), who is listed as questionable for Tuesday and could miss his fifth consecutive game.

Los Angeles coach Darvin Ham said the club will continue to be cautious with James. He sees no reason to rush things with the season not even 20 percent over.

Russell Westbrook was also ailing after injuring his right thumb during Sunday’s game. But post-game X-rays were negative, and Westbrook did not appear on Monday’s injury report, signaling he will play Tuesday.

In the Lakers’ 123-92 trouncing of the visiting San Antonio Spurs on Sunday, Davis had 30 points and matched his season best of 18 rebounds in only 27 minutes, 46 seconds on the court. The team reported Monday that the performance marked the first time a Laker had amassed 30 points and 15 rebounds in less than 30 minutes of action since Wilt Chamberlain did it in 1969.

He also became just the third player in Lakers history to post 30 points and 15 rebounds in three consecutive games, joining Shaquille O’Neal and Elgin Baylor.

The Lakers, after all, started the season 0-5, and won just two of their first 12 games before the current three-game winning streak.

Los Angeles is opening a three-game road against the Suns, a team they struggled with last season. Phoenix went 4-0 against the Lakers with the wins coming by an average of 17 points.

The Lakers complete the short trip with back-to-back contests in San Antonio on Friday and Saturday.

Meanwhile, the Suns are expected to be without point guard Chris Paul (heel) for the seventh straight game. Phoenix coach Monty Williams said the team will continue to be cautious about the 37-year-old’s health.

Cameron Payne continues to step up in place of Paul and he scored 21 points in Sunday’s 116-95 home triumph over the New York Knicks.

Payne has topped 20 points four times during the stretch while averaging 20.2 points and 6.3 assists. He also has made 20 of 44 (45.5 percent) from 3-point range while thriving as a starter.

Phoenix is 8-1 at home — the Lakers are 0-5 on the road — but has sputtered since opening the season with six wins in seven games.

The Suns are just 4-5 since the solid start but haven’t been able to maintain it with Paul, forward Cameron Johnson (knee) and backup guard Landry Shamet (concussion) out of the lineup.

NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons at Denver Nuggets

0

When the Denver Nuggets had to play without three starters — including two-time MVP Nikola Jokic — for successive games against the Mavericks in Dallas, Friday’s 28-point loss to Dallas was not unexpected, but Denver’s impressive response in Sunday night’s rematch was downright surprising.

The Nuggets not only played better — they beat the Mavericks 98-97 to earn a split.

On Tuesday night, Denver will try to replicate that performance when it hosts the slumping Detroit Pistons.

Denver did not practice Monday and has not updated the status of Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon, who did not make the two-game trip to Dallas. Jokic (three games) and Murray (two games) are in health and safety protocol, and Gordon has missed three games with a non-COVID illness.

It was understandable that the Mavericks took advantage of the absences Friday night, but Bones Hyland said he took the loss personally — and Sunday he did something about it. He scored 13 of his career-high 29 points in the fourth quarter.

Hyland skipped an optional shooting day Saturday to study film from Friday.

It would help to get the reigning MVP back as well as Murray and Gordon. Without them in the lineup, the Nuggets’ bench was stretched thin but overcame the disadvantage to stop a two-game losing streak.

Denver will face a Pistons team coming off a tough loss at Sacramento, Detroit’s seventh loss in a row. Cade Cunningham has missed six games with left-shin soreness and could miss much more time with what the team fears is a stress fracture.

Detroit also has played the past three games with Isaiah Stewart (big-toe strain), and Saddiq Bey missed Sunday’s loss with a foot strain.

Even with that, the Pistons nearly beat the surprising Kings. Detroit led late in the fourth quarter before Sacramento went on a run to win 137-129.

Since winning on opening night, Detroit has lost 13 of 15 games and has the worst record in the NBA.

NBA Preview: Sacramento Kings at Memphis Grizzlies

0

The last team to see the “old” Sacramento Kings will become the 12th to experience the new-and-improved edition when the Western Conference’s hottest team visits the Memphis Grizzlies on Tuesday night.

The last time the clubs met, the Grizzlies handed the Kings their fourth consecutive loss to open the season as the Grizzlies got 31 points from Desmond Bane in a 125-110 victory in Sacramento.

Much has changed in the nearly four weeks since. While the Kings have won nine of 11, including six in a row, the Grizzlies are just 6-6 while losing Bane to a sprained right big toe and Ja Morant to a sprained left ankle.

Sacramento’s winning ways figure to get tested on a four-day trip to Memphis, Atlanta and Boston that will sandwich Thanksgiving.

The winning streak has featured double-figures scoring from seven different players, including De’Aaron Fox, who has used 57.7 percent shooting to fashion a 24-point scoring average during the run.

Fox hit 11 of 18 shots from the field and totaled 33 points in Sunday’s 137-129 home win over the Detroit Pistons, a game in which the Kings topped 130 points for the third straight time and 120 for the sixth consecutive game.

Fox had 27 points and Barnes 20 in the earlier loss to Memphis, while Domantas Sabonis missed a triple-double by one assist.

While their outstanding play has continued, a key to the Kings’ improvement has come via the 3-point shooting of Kevin Huerter and Terence Davis, who have combined to go 32-for-64 during the winning streak.

Over the six games, Sacramento has shot 40.8 percent from 3-point range, the fourth-best mark in the league over that stretch.

Meanwhile, the Grizzlies have lost their way defensively. After holding Charlotte and Washington to 99 and 97 points in the final two outings of a three-game winning streak at the beginning of the month, Memphis has watched each of its past seven opponents go for 102 or more.

Two of those foes topped 120, including the Brooklyn Nets in a 127-115 home win over Memphis on Sunday. Dillon Brooks paced the short-handed Grizzlies with 31 points.

Jaren Jackson Jr. joined Bane and Morant on the sidelines Sunday because he’s being brought along slowly following off-season surgery on his right foot. He’s expected back to face the Kings.

Memphis is 0-2 this season in games in which neither Bane nor Morant has played. Tyus Jones has started both of those games and has averaged 15 points and 5.5 assists.

NBA Preview: Brooklyn Nets at Philadelphia Sixers

0

Coming off his best showing for the Brooklyn Nets since being traded from the 76ers, Ben Simmons heads into Tuesday’s return to Philadelphia feeling good even while anticipating the reaction from 76ers’ fans.

Given their injury woes, Philadelphia will not be necessarily focused on the return of Simmons, who averaged 15.9 points in 275 regular-season games for them before making his last appearance with the team in Game 7 of the 2021 Eastern Conference semifinals.

The 76ers will be without star Joel Embiid with a left mid-foot sprain Saturday night and will miss at least two games.

Already without James Harden for another two weeks because of a strained right foot, the Sixers lost Tyrese Maxey to a broken left foot Friday, and then Embiid injured his foot Saturday after colliding with teammate Georges Niang in the second half of a 112-109 loss to the visiting Minnesota Timberwolves. Tobias Harris (sore left hip), Furkan Korkmaz (knee) missed Saturday’s game, and defensive specialist P.J. Tucker — who often guards Brooklyn star Kevin Durant — left that game due to an unspecified injury.

Simmons is averaging 7.9 points in his first 12 games with the Nets, who obtained him from Philadelphia before last season’s trade deadline along with Seth Curry when Harden sought a trade. When the Nets played in Philadelphia on March 10, Simmons sat on the bench as he missed the final two months with a back injury.

Simmons started slowly by averaging 5.2 points in his first nine games, but in his past three, the former No. 1 overall pick is averaging 16 points, 8.7 rebounds and five assists while making 84.6 percent (22 of 26) of his shots.

On Sunday, he helped the Nets get their sixth win in nine games by scoring 22 points on 11-of-13 shooting and a team-high eight rebounds in a 127-115 win over the visiting Memphis Grizzlies. Simmons’ efficient showing was part of a Brooklyn performance in which they shot 60.2 percent with a season-high 33 assists.

Durant scored 26 points, making it 17 in a row with at least 25 points while Kyrie Irving finished with 14 in 26 minutes in his return from a team-imposed suspension that lasted eight games.

IN THE RANKINGS: Neither Sacramento State, nor UC Davis are ranked nationally entering the 2022-23 season.

HORNETS PICKED FIFTH TO START 2022-23: Sacramento State was picked to finish fifth in the Big Sky Conference standings according to a vote of both the league’s head coaches and the media released by the conference office on Oct. 26. The Hornets, who finished seventh a season ago, received 146 points and a first-place vote in the media poll, while picking up 46 points in the coaches’ poll. Montana State, which finished tied for second in the regular season and won the Big Sky Tournament title, was picked atop both polls, earning nine of the 10 first-place votes from the coaches, and 24 first-place votes from the media that cover the league.

BIG SKY HIGH: The Hornets’ fifth-place prediction is the highest for the program since Sacramento State was picked to finish third in both the coaches and media polls prior to the 2015-16 campaign, after winning 18 games and advancing to the third round of the WNIT the season prior. The Hornets actually finished tied for second in the 2015-16 coaches poll with former member North Dakota, but the Fighting Hawks received one first-place vote to win the “tiebreaker.”

NATABOU ON MID-MAJOR AWARD WATCH LIST: One season after showing she’s one of the best in the West, junior post Isnelle Natabou is garnering national attention heading into the 2022-23 campaign, named as one of 25 players to the watch list for the 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats on Oct. 19. The first Big Sky Conference student-athlete ever to be named to the list for this particular award, Natabou is joined by 24 of her peers on the initial watch list and is only one of four from the West Coast named to the list along with Gonzaga’s Brynna Maxwell, Portland’s Alex Fowler, and San Francisco’s Ioanna Kimili. For more details, read the complete release on HornetSports.com.

NATABOU NAMED TO BIG SKY’S PRESEASON HONOR ROLL: In addition to her national honor, Natabou was also named to the seven-member preseason all-conference team, joining Montana State’s Darian White (who also was selected the MVP), Idaho’s Beyonce Bea, Montana’s Carmen Gfeller, Northern Colorado’s Hannah Simental, Montana State’s Kola Bad Bear, and Weber State’s Daryn Hickock. The native of the Czech Republic became only the third Hornet to earn preseason all-league honors in the process, joining former standouts Kennedy Nicholas (2019-20) and Brianna Burgos (2016-17).

BUT WAIT… THERE’S MORE!: The accolades continued to roll in for Natabou, who was also named the Big Sky’s Preseason Player of the Year according to ESPN.com, which made its picks for all 32 Division I conferences on Oct. 25.

ABOUT THE AGGIES: UC Davis enters the week with a 2-1 overall record following a seven-point win over Boise State at home in its only game last week… The Aggies opened the year with a win over Bethel College before falling at Washington… Senior guard Evanne Turner leads the team in scoring at 21.0 ppg, adding 4.0 rpg, shooting .467 from the field, and .441 from three-point range… She scored a career-high 26 points in the win over the Broncos… Junior transfer Tova Sabel is the only other Aggie in double figures at 10.0 ppg, while freshman Megan Norris is averaging a team-high 5.3 rpg.

SERIES NOTES: UC Davis holds a narrow 34-31 lead in the all-time series according to records that date back to 1970, but the Aggies have won the last five meetings since 2016… Sacramento State’s last win in the series came in 2015, posting a 92-77 victory at UC Davis… Only two of the last five meetings have been decided by single digits: a 79-72 decision in 2017 and a two-point double-overtime decision in 2019… The Hornets won 11 straight in the series from 1974-77, while the Aggies’ longest streak is seven consecutive wins from 1989-2005.

A “GOLDEN” OPPORTUNITY: For the second consecutive season, the Causeway battle with rival UC Davis will have a slightly different look to it as the Hornets and the Aggies will take the floor at the Golden 1 Center in the first game of a doubleheader with the two school’s men’s teams. Last year, UC Davis took the first-ever meeting, 75-46.

JUST FIVE MORE MINUTES, MOM: Sacramento State and UC Santa Barbara needed five more minutes to decide their back-and-forth clash at The Nest on Saturday (Nov. 19) — the first overtime game for the Hornets since a 76-73 win over Idaho on Jan. 22 of last season. It was the second-straight overtime win for Sacramento State, which had lost its previous four extra-time contests before its triumph over the Vandals.

COMEBACK KIDS: Slowly, but surely, the Hornets chipped away at an 11-point second-half deficit against the Gauchos en route to their overtime win, posting their largest comeback since trailing by 18 in the third quarter against San Jose State on Nov. 14 last season, eventually sinking the Spartans, 75-65, for the first win in the Mark Campbell era.

DIALED IN FROM DISTANCE: Sacramento State’s 13 three-pointers in the win over UC Santa Barbara marked the Hornets’ first double-digit make performance from beyond the arc since sinking 11 (for 20) against Northern Colorado on Jan. 24 last season and the most since draining 15 from distance in a victory at Eastern Washington on Feb. 1, 2020

TAKE IT AWAY, TAKE IT AWAY, TAKE IT AWAY NOW: The “giving season” may be upon it, but the Hornets were in a taking mood against the Gauchos, posting a season-high 12 steals — including three apiece by Benthe Versteeg and Katie Peneueta. The 12 steals were the most since Sacramento State had the same number against Sonoma State last season and the most against a Division I opponent since the Hornets finished with 13 against Eastern Washington on Jan. 30, 2021.

WHO SHOT OUT THE LIGHTS?: Sacramento State continues to shine from the field, hitting just over 47 percent from the field in the win over UC Santa Barbara on Saturday — marking the seventh time in the team’s last eight contests dating back to last year that the Hornets have shot better than 40 percent from the floor as a team.

LET IT FLY: Sacramento State enters the week leading the Big Sky in field goal percentage (.497) and ranking No. 11 in the NCAA in that category as of Nov. 21, while the Hornets’ sharpshooters also stand atop the league rankings, pacing the conference by shooting .426 from three-point range, standing No. 12 in the country.

MINUTE WOMEN: There haven’t been many players in the Big Sky — let alone the entire country — who have seen more time on the court to start the year than the Hornets’ Katie Peneueta (40.42 mpg — including all 45 minutes against UC Santa Barbara on Saturday), Kahlaijah Dean (38.53 mpg), and Isnelle Natabou (37.91 mpg). The trio ranks first, third, and fourth, respectively, in the league in minutes while all standing among the top 25 in the NCAA: Peneueta ranks third in the nation, Dean ranks 10th in the country, and Natabou ranks 24th in the NCAA.

HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE KAHLAIJAH?: A Rubik’s Cube has 27 blocks that one has to maneuver in order to solve the puzzle. Senior Kahlaijah Dean has proven to pose a similar problem to opposing defenses over the last two games, scoring 27 points in each of her last two games to help the Hornets to victory. Dean has hit 22-of-37 (.595) from the field en route to those two performances, including 7-of-11 from three-point range, leading the Big Sky in scoring and ranking No. 20 in the nation at 22.7 ppg entering this week’s contests.

GIVING NO QUARTER: Of Dean’s 27 points against UC Santa Barbara, 10 of those — en route to 16 first-half points — came in the first quarter alone, marking the second time this season that she has gone for double-digits in a single quarter along with her 16 point third quarter at Santa Clara. Isnelle Natabou joins her in that double-digit club, finishing with 10 in the first period against UC Irvine on Nov. 12 and adding 11 more in the opening 10 minutes against the Broncos on Nov. 14.

SHE SLICES, SHE DICES, SHE DISHES, SHE SCORES: Does she julienne? We don’t know, but when she’s not putting the ball in the basket, Kahlaijah Dean is doing her best trying to help her teammates do so, averaging 6.7 assists per game — standing second in the league and No. 16 in nation entering the week. She is one of only two players in the nation averaging at least 22.7 ppg and 6.7 assists, joined in that select group by Iowa’s Caitlin Clark, who is fifth in the NCAA at 26.8 ppg and No. 14 at 6.8 apg.

THE DEAN OF SCORING: Dean brings with her a pedigree of knowing where the basket is, reaching the 1,000 career point milestone as only a junior at Oakland University and finishing her four years with the Golden Grizzlies with 1,425 points to her name. Following her first three performances in the green and gold, the Bakersfield, Calif., native has brought her total up to 1,493 career points, ranking tied for No. 31 among active scorers across the country entering the week and posting a total that would rank fifth on Sacramento State’s all-time scoring list.

GOING BIG IN THE BIG SKY: Dean’s two 27-point performances are the most by a Big Sky Conference player entering the week (as of Nov. 21), while Natabou’s 23 at Santa Clara stand sixth. In addition, Dean’s two games with 11 makes from the field against the Broncos and UC Santa Barbara — along with Natabou’s 10 makes against Santa Clara — hold down the top three spots in the conference, while Dean’s nine assists against the Broncos are the second-most in the league.

RIDING WITH RANDHAWA: The senior transfer from Utah State made her presence known in a big way against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 19, posting her Sacramento State career high with 17 points to go with three rebounds and a pair of assists. She hit 6-of-11 from the field — including five from beyond the arc — en route to her total, nine of which came in the fourth quarter as the Hornets rallied to tie the Gauchos at 60 and force overtime.

THREE IS MORE THAN TWO: And Katie Peneueta has certainly done the math. In 25 career games with the Hornets, the Vancouver, Wash., native has made a living from long distance, sinking 65 of her 69 career field goals from behind the three-point line — her last coming as the game-tying triple with two seconds remaining in regulation against UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 19. Entering the week, Peneueta’s last 28 makes from the field have all been three-pointers as her last two-pointer came at Northern Arizona with 21 seconds left in a 76-62 Sacramento State victory on Feb. 3 last year, finishing 7-of-10 from the floor overall and 6-of-8 from three-point range.

THE PENEUETA IS MIGHTIER THAN THE SWORD: Peneueta enters the week ranked among the top five in the Big Sky in five different categories, leading the league in minutes (see above) and blocks per game (2.00), standing third in three-point percentage (.529) and three-pointers per game (3.00), and fourth in rebounding (7.0 rpg) to go along with her 9.7 ppg.

ALMOST AUTOMATIC: Get her close and Isnelle Natabou rarely misses. The junior from the Czech Republic is a combined 23-for-32 on the year, ranking fifth in the NCAA in field goal percentage at .719 through the team’s first three games and standing as one of only seven players across the country to enter the week shooting better than 70 percent overall from the field. It’s right where Natabou left off in 2021-22, when she shot .643 (182-283) from the field in her first year with the Hornets, ranking second on the school’s all-time single-season list (Sue Digitale shot .651 in 1976-77).

ARE YOU BOARD?: Natabou clearly wasn’t in the Hornets’ season opener against UC Irvine, as her 20 rebounds were the most since she had 22 against Idaho in an overtime win on Jan. 22 of last year and was her third career game with 20-or-more rebounds. Nationally, the 20-rebound performance is tied for the fourth-highest in the NCAA for a single-game — and the most of any Big Sky Conference player — as of Nov. 21, and stands as one of only ten 20-rebound games across the country entering the week.
