The Starting 11 — NFL celebrates Madden’s incomparable legacy

0

Thanksgiving just wouldn’t be Thanksgiving in the National Football League without Pro Football Hall of Famer JOHN MADDEN.

After the iconic coach, broadcaster and entertainment pioneer passed away late last year, the league determined that Thanksgiving was the best way to truly honor one of its most impactful individuals and preserve his legacy in perpetuity.

The inaugural “John Madden Thanksgiving Celebration” this week will feature special broadcast tributes during respective Thanksgiving games on CBS, FOX and NBC. Additionally, each network will select a “Madden Player of the Game,” who will receive a $10,000 donation in their name from the NFL Foundation to the youth or high school football program of their choice.

And to honor Madden in this week’s Starting 11, the league remembers the pro football legend through 11 of his most memorable quotes…

1.     ATTITUDE OF GRATITUDE“Since 1981, I’ve spent every Thanksgiving Day broadcasting a game, and it is one of my favorite days. You can say, ‘Woe is me, I never get to be part of the tradition,’ or you can say, ‘Heck, we’ve got our own tradition, and it’s pretty good.’”

  • Traditions were important to Madden. Whether honoring the game, family, the turducken dish he discovered in New Orleans and shared with his bus drivers, colleagues and friends, or the NFL’s long history of playing on Thanksgiving, time-honored celebrations were held in high regard by the Pro Football Hall of Famer.
  • And another tradition that surely would’ve made Madden proud is the NFL’s long trend of teams overcoming down years and rebounding to make the playoffs. Two teams in that category will meet on Thanksgiving Day at AT&T Stadium (4:30 PM ET, FOX), when the NEW YORK GIANTS (7-3) visit the DALLAS COWBOYS (7-3). In each of the last 32 seasons (1990-2021), at least four teams annually have reached the playoffs after failing to make the postseason the previous year. In 2021, Dallas was one of seven teams that earned playoff berths after missing the postseason the year before. This season, the Giants have put themselves in prime position to join that group.
  • Madden and longtime broadcast partner Pat Summerall were in the Texas Stadium booth for CBS the last time the Giants met the Cowboys on Thanksgiving, Nov. 26, 1992.

2.     NUMBER OF THE WEEK – 99“Sometimes we think video games are just games for kids, and then once they get out of grammar school or high school, they never play again. But that’s when they really start playing.”

  • Madden helped create one of the most exclusive groups in sports: The 99 Club, made up of those players with a 99 rating in the Madden NFL video game.
  • One current member of that club, defensive end MYLES GARRETT, will meet a recent 99 overall member, quarterback TOM BRADY, when TAMPA BAY (5-5) travels to CLEVELAND (3-7). Sunday’s game at FirstEnergy Stadium (1:00 PM ET, FOX) also features Browns running back NICK CHUBB, who currently carries a 98 Madden rating. In real life, Chubb has the second-highest career rushing average (5.3 yards per carry) in NFL history (minimum 1,000 attempts).
  • Other current members of the 99 Club are Raiders wide receiver DAVANTE ADAMS, Rams defensive lineman AARON DONALD and 49ers tackle TRENT WILLIAMS.

3.     CONVICTION AND HUMILITY“Self-praise is for losers. Be a winner. Stand for something. Always have class, and be humble.”

  • Three players that epitomize those qualities and certainly would’ve impressed Madden in 2022 will meet on Sunday when BALTIMORE (7-3) squares off with JACKSONVILLE (3-7) at TIAA Bank Field (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Quarterback LAMAR JACKSON has first-place Baltimore in position to reach the playoffs for the third time in his four seasons as the Ravens’ starter. Meanwhile, the Jaguars’ TREVOR LAWRENCE has shown remarkable improvement, having already passed for more touchdowns than his rookie season. Additionally, in four of his past five games, Lawrence has not thrown an interception. Jacksonville running back TRAVIS ETIENNE has averaged 120.0 scrimmage yards per game since Week 7. Only TONY POLLARD and DERRICK HENRY have higher averages over the past five weeks in the NFL.

4.     MADDEN SPOTLIGHT – INDIVIDUAL MATCHUP“Football isn’t nuclear physics, but it’s not so simple that you can make it simple. It takes some explaining to get it across.”

  • Remembered as one of the best teachers in football history, Madden became the first American sports broadcaster to use a telestrator during the Super Bowl XVI broadcast on CBS, as the 49ers defeated the Bengals, 26-21. He certainly would’ve used that telestrator this week to explain the chess match at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, FOX) when SAN FRANCISCO (6-4) hosts NEW ORLEANS (4-7).
  • Saints wide receiver CHRIS OLAVE has 51 receptions for 760 yards, both first among NFL rookies.
  • San Francisco safety TALANOA HUFANGA, a big reason the 49ers have shut out opponents in the second half of each of their past three games, has emerged as a leader in the San Francisco secondary.

5.     MADDEN SPOTLIGHT – TEAM MATCHUP“Discipline is knowing what you’re supposed to do and doing it as best you can.”

  • Don’t expect a lot of laundry on the field when the LOS ANGELES RAMS (3-7) visit the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS (8-2) on Sunday (4:25 PM ET, FOX). The Rams rank second in the league with just 4.3 penalties per game while the Chiefs (5.1) are tied for the fourth fewest.
    •
  • In the last meeting between the clubs (Week 11, 2018), the Rams defeated the Chiefs, 54-51, the first game in NFL history in which each team reached 50 points. In the third-highest-scoring game (105 combined points) of all-time, the two clubs combined for 1,001 total yards of offense.

6.     THAT’S A LOUD DEFENSE“You got one guy going BOOM, one guy going WHACK, and one guy not getting in the end zone.”

  • The WASHINGTON COMMANDERS (6-5) have won five of their last six games heading into Sunday’s matchup with the ATLANTA FALCONS (5-6) at FedExField (1:00 PM ET, FOX). Over that stretch, since Week 6, the Commanders rank second in the league in goal-to-go defense, allowing touchdowns on just 45.5 percent of opponents’ goal-to-go possessions. Washington linebacker JAMIN DAVIS is tied for second in the NFL with six goal-to-go tackles this season.

7.     DRESSING FOR SUCCESS“It’s a lot easier to get a suit than it is to get a coach.”

  • When Pro Football Hall of Famer AL DAVIS hired Madden as Raiders head coach in 1969, Madden was just 32 years old. So, naturally, he would’ve been impressed with the effort of another rookie head coach, Minnesota’s KEVIN O’CONNELL.
  • This week, O’Connell and the MINNESOTA VIKINGS (8-2) host BILL BELICHICK and the NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS (6-4) on Thanksgiving night (8:20 PM ET, NBC). Belichick earlier this season surpassed Pro Football Hall of Famer GEORGE HALAS for the second-most wins in NFL history, including the postseason.
  • O’Connell has an opportunity to join a significant group of rookie head coaches. In the NFL’s previous 102 seasons, only 22 individuals have won at least nine of their first 11 games as an NFL head coach, a list that includes Madden (nine in 1969) and Halas (nine in 1920).

8.     GOODS & PROVISIONS READY TO GO“Don’t worry about the horse being blind; just load the wagon.”

  • The DETROIT LIONS (4-6) have won three straight and enter Thanksgiving against the BUFFALO BILLS (7-3) in second place in the NFC North. Running back JAMAAL WILLIAMS leads the NFL with 12 rushing touchdowns, the most by a Lions player since Pro Football Hall of Famer BARRY SANDERS had 16 in 1991. Head coach DAN CAMPBELL and his club are bidding for the franchise’s first playoff berth since 2016.

9.     MUSIC CITY, MEADOWLANDS PATIOS COULD BE CROWDED“If you can’t run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.”

  • Tennessee’s DERRICK HENRY leads the NFL in both carries (230) and rushing yards (1,010) this season. In last week’s win, he became the fifth running back all-time with at least 10 rushing touchdowns in five consecutive seasons, joining Pro Football Hall of Famer LADAINIAN TOMLINSON (nine consecutive seasons) as well as ADRIAN PETERSON (seven), SHAUN ALEXANDER (five) and MICHAEL TURNER (five). TENNESSEE (7-3) hosts CINCINNATI (6-4) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS) in a rematch of a thrilling 2021 AFC Divisional playoff game.
  • Meanwhile, CHICAGO (3-8) visits the NEW YORK JETS (6-4) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX). Since Madden led the Raiders to a Super Bowl title in 1976, only two teams have averaged more than 200 rushing yards per game: The 2019 BALTIMORE RAVENS (206.0) and the 1977 CHICAGO BEARS (200.8). The 2022 CHICAGO BEARS (197.9) have a chance to join that group, led by quarterback JUSTIN FIELDS, who last week became the second player in the Super Bowl era with at least one touchdown pass and one rushing touchdown in five consecutive games, joining KYLER MURRAY (five consecutive games in 2020).

10.  THIS WEEK IN MADDEN HISTORY: Nov. 28, 1976 (46 years ago) – Future Pro Football Hall of Famers KEN STABLER and CLIFF BRANCH connect on a 35-yard touchdown as the Raiders dominate Tampa Bay in a 49-16 victory. The Raiders go on to win their next five games, including Super Bowl XI over Minnesota. From the start of that ’76 season through Oct. 9, 1977, Madden and Stabler would lead the Raiders to wins in 20 of 21 games, including the postseason … “I’ve often said, ‘If I had one drive to win a game to this day, and I had a quarterback to pick, I would pick Kenny.’ Snake was a lot cooler than I was. He was a perfect quarterback and a perfect Raider. When you think about the Raiders, you think about Ken Stabler.”

11.  HIGH-CALORIC AROMAS“The only things that smell good are fat and sugar. Tofu being boiled doesn’t smell good. Anything that smells good is fattening.”

  • The franchise that drafted Madden in 1958, the Philadelphia Eagles, certainly would’ve impressed him this season, especially with the team’s play on the offensive line. Philadelphia has started the same five offensive linemen – LANDON DICKERSONLANE JOHNSONJASON KELCEJORDAN MAILATA and ISAAC SEUMALO – in nine of its 10 games, losing just one start due to injury.
  • This week, PHILADELPHIA (9-1) hosts GREEN BAY (4-7) on Sunday Night Football (8:20 PM ET, NBC).

2 MINUTE DRILL
• Matt McDonald’s 42-yard touchdown pass to Ta’ron Keith with just nine seconds left in the game lifted Bowling Green to a 42-35 win over Toledo on Tuesday night (Nov. 15). With the win, the Falcons (6-5, 5-2 MAC) are still in the hunt for the MAC East Division title, became bowl eligible and won at Toledo for the first time since 2008. This marks the first time since 2015 that Bowling Green is bowl-eligible.

• Redshirt junior quarterback Kurtis Rourke went 12-for-16 with one touchdown in 169 yards, while redshirt sophomore quarterback CJ Harris took over just before halftime, going 5-for-8 with 34 yards in the air as Ohio (8-3, 6-1 MAC) topped Ball State, 32-18. Graduate student wide receiver Sam Wiglusz led the receivers with one touchdown on 80 yards while junior wide receiver Jacoby Jones recorded 87 yards on five receptions.

• Eastern Michigan used a dominant second half to lift itself to a 31-24, MAC cross divisional victory over Kent State. Down 17-7 at half, EMU
(7-4, 4-3 MAC) used a 24-0 second-half spurt to take control of the game and seal the victory. The Eagles were led by senior QB Taylor Powell, who tossed for a career-high 315 yards on 30-of-39 passing and three TD’s. Defensively, senior defensive end Jose Ramirez finished with a team-high seven tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss.

• Aveon Smith threw for 185 yards and one touchdown and added 105 yards on the ground and two scores as the RedHawks downed the Northern Illinois Huskies 29-23 on Wednesday evening at Huskie Stadium. With the win, Miami improves to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in Mid-American Conference.

• The Victory Cannon is coming back to Western Michigan University as the Broncos defeated Central Michigan, 12-10, on the road at a snowy Kelly/Shorts Stadium on Wednesday night. WMU’s Sean Tyler had a career-high 177 yards on the ground on 26 carries to lead the way for the Broncos in the win.

MAC NOTES
Headed To The ‘Ship
Toledo (7-4, 5-2 MAC) has already clinched a share of the MAC West Division title and a trip to the MAC Championship Game in Detroit on Dec. 3. The Rockets secured their trip to Ford Field thanks to a 28-21 victory over Ball State on Nov. 8 and a loss by Western Michigan a day later. Toledo has now won or shared 12 MAC West Division crowns. This will be Toledo’s seventh appearance in the MAC Championship Game and first since 2017. Toledo is 3-3 all-time in the MCG.

East Division Scenarios
With an Ohio win over Bowling Green … Ohio (7-1) will be the outright East Division Champion and will head to the MAC Football Championship Game. With a BGSU win over Ohio + Kent State win over Buffalo… Bowling Green (6-2) and Ohio (6-2) will share the East Division title and Bowling Green will advance to the MAC Football Championship Game due to its head-to-head win against vs. Ohio.

Tiebreaker Scenario Using Uneven Number of Games Policy
With a BGSU win over Ohio + Buffalo win over Kent State Bowling Green 6-2 (.750) Ohio 6-2 (.750) Buffalo 5-2 (.714)

First tiebreaker: Head-to-Head record amongst tied teams
a) All three teams split the head-to-head series during the regular season (1-1) Second tiebreaker: Winning percentage vs. ranked division opponents (top to bottom vs. East Division common opponents)
b) Bowling Green, Buffalo and Ohio each defeated Miami (1.000)
c) Bowling Green & Ohio lost to Kent State (.000), while Buffalo would have defeated Kent State (1.000) in this tiebreaker scenario.
d) Buffalo wins tiebreaker and will advance to MAC Football Championship Game

Goin’ Bowlin’
Toledo: Toledo is bowl eligible for the 13th consecutive season, the longest streak in the MAC. The Rockets have reached bowl eligibility every year since 2010.

Ohio: Ohio’s 45-24 victory over Buffalo on Tuesday (Nov. 1) marked their sixth victory of the season, making them bowl eligible. The Bobcats’ last bowl was the 2019 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl, where Ohio defeated Nevada 30-21.

Eastern Michigan: The Eagles are headed to the postseason for the sixth time in program history, and the fifth under ninth-year Head Coach Chris Creighton, that the team has qualified to play in a bowl game. Moreover, it marks bowl eligibility for the fourth consecutive year (excluding the COVID-19, 2020 season), which is a program record.

Bowling Green: The Falcons are bowl-eligible for the first time since 2015 after Tuesday’s (Nov. 15) dramatic 42-35 win over Toledo. Currently BGSU has the most season wins (6) and MAC wins (5) since 2015 when BGSU went 10-4 overall and 7-1 in MAC play.

Have a Night, Bert Emanuel Jr.
Last Wednesday, Bert Emanuel Jr. rushed for 293 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries for a 12.2 yards per carry average. The 293 yards rank as the fourth most rushing yards in a single game in school history and set a school-record for most single-game rushing yards by a quarterback. The last time a Chippewa player rushed for 200 or more yards was Lew Nichols (219 yards) at Ball State on Nov. 17, 2021. The 293 rushing yards are the most by any FBS Quarterback since 2019.

UB’s Fuqua Named National Defensive Player of the Week Buffalo safety Marcus Fuqua was named the Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week following his standout performance against Toledo. He’s the first UB player to ever earn the honor. The junior had a career-high three interceptions against the Rockets to become just the fourth UB player to record three interceptions in a game. Fuqua leads the MAC and is tied for the FBS lead with five interceptions. He was named the MAC East Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season following his performance against Toledo.

Not 1, Not 2, Not 3 …
Sophomore cornerback Quinyon Mitchell was named the Walter Camp Football Bowl Subdivision National Defensive Player of the Week following his four-interception performance in Toledo’s 52-32 victory at Northern Illinois on Oct. 8. Mitchell returned two of his three first-half interceptions for touchdowns as Toledo bolted out to a 35-7 lead at the break. Mitchell snuffed out a potential NIU touchdown by grabbing his third pick of the half in the NIU end zone on a pass from three-yard line with 16 seconds left. He gathered up his fourth pick of the game in the third quarter, a diving catch on NIU’s opening drive of the half, giving him four interceptions in slightly more than 30 minutes of play. The four interceptions were the first four of Mitchell’s career, tied the school record set back in 1950, and was the first time a Rocket had two pick sixes in one game. Mitchell is the second Toledo player to earn Walter Camp National Player of Week honors. Safety DeJuan Rogers earned the award following the Rockets’ upset of No. 18 Arkansas on Sept. 12, 2015.

Ramirez Earns National Recognition
Eastern Michigan senior defensive lineman Jose Ramirez has garnered national acclaim after a career-best performance against Western Michigan University Saturday, Oct. 8. Ramirez was named the Reese’s Senior Bowl Defensive Player of the Week as well as the EastWest Shrine Bowl’s Breakout Defensive Player of the Week. Ramirez made history Saturday when he recorded a career-high 4.0 sacks against Western Michigan en route to a 45-23 victory over the Broncos. The sack total is a single-game record at Eastern Michigan, and is the second-best individual performance in the NCAA this season.

Flashes of Brilliance
The Kent State Golden Flashes re-wrote the program record books and held off a feisty Ohio Bobcats squad in a thrilling 31-24 overtime victory on a homecoming Saturday at Dix Stadium. The Flashes rolled up 736 yards of offense in the game, the second-most in school history and the second-most this season in an FBS game. Kent State also became the ONLY team in FBS HISTORY to have a 240 yard rushers (Marquez Cooper) and 40 yard receiver (Dante Cephas) in the same game.

B1G Wins
The MAC has won a regular season game vs. Big Ten opponents in each of the last 16 consecutive seasons (2006-2022*) the longest streak in MAC history. Miami’s 17-14 win at Northwestern on Sept. 24, 2022 extended the streak. During this 16-year stretch, MAC teams have defeated 12 different Big Ten programs—Illinois (4); Indiana (5); Iowa (3); Maryland (1); Michigan (1); Michigan State (1); Minnesota (3); Nebraska (1); Northwestern (4); Penn State (1); Purdue (6) and Rutgers (2) for a total of 32 wins during this stretch. Miami (14), Bowling Green (9), Toledo (6), Central Michigan (6) and Northern Illinois (6) have the most wins vs. Big Ten opponents. *The MAC did play any non-conference games in 2020 due to the pandemic.

Say Cheez
Eastern Michigan was named the Cheez-It Bowl National Team of the Week following the Eagles 30-21 win over Arizona State on Sept. 17, as selected by the FWAA. EMU’s win over the Sun Devils marked the first regular season win for a MAC school over a Pac12 opponent. It also marked the first time that EMU earned Team of the Week honors and the first for a MAC school since Buffalo on Nov. 28, 2020. The Eagles became only the sixth MAC school to win the award since it debuted in 2002. EMU’s Evans Named Doak Walker Running Back of the Week Eastern Michigan running back Samson Evans exploded through the Arizona State defense, rushing for 258 yards on 36 carries in the win. His career-best numbers for carries and yards that led to the first regular-season win for a MAC school over a Pac-12 opponent earned Evans the Doak Walker National Running Back of the Week honors.

Six Named As Campbell Trophy Semifinalists
The National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) proudly announced the 156 semifinalists for the 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy®, college football’s premier scholar-athlete award. The impressive list of candidates boasts an impressive 3.62 average GPA, with more than half of the semifinalists having already earned their bachelor’s degrees. Among those listed were a total of six student-athletes from the MAC.
• Bowling Green’s Matt McDonald (QB)
• Buffalo’s Alex McNulty (K)
• Central Michigan’s Robi Stuart (DL)
• Eastern Michigan’s Dylan Drummond (WR)
• NIU’s Michael Kennedy (DE)
• Western Michigan’s Dylan Deatherage (OL)

Fly The Flag!
The MAC has totaled eight FBS non-conference wins over Northwestern (Big Ten), Arizona State (Pac-12), Georgia State (Sun Belt) Marshall (Sun Belt), Florida Atlantic (C-USA), UConn (Independent) and UMass (Independent) twice. In 2017, the MAC concluded its non-conference regular season schedule with 14 FBS wins, which tied for second most for the MAC since 2000. The most non-conference regular season wins by the MAC in a single year is 16 FBS wins in 2012, while the 14 FBS wins during the 2017 season matched the total from 2008. A “Fly the Flag” victory is a win an over “Autonomous Conference”. This season the MAC has two “Fly The Flag” wins as Eastern Michigan topped Arizona State (Pac-12), while Miami defeated Northwestern (Big Ten).

Motor City #MACtion
MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon A. Steinbrecher announced in conjunction with the Detroit Lions, that the MAC has secured a three-year contract extension to host the MAC Football Championship Game at Ford Field in Detroit through the 2024 football season. The MAC is the only non-autonomous FBS conference to sustain a championship game at a neutral site. The MAC has a long association with Detroit and Ford Field as the MAC has held its MAC Football Championship Game as a neutral site championship event at Ford Field since 2004. CFB: Week 13 Conference Notes – Conference-USA (C-USA)

UPCOMING GAMES (ALL TIMES CT)

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 26
WKU at Florida Atlantic (CBSSN) 11 am

Rice at North Texas (ESPN+) 1 pm

UTEP at UTSA (Stadium) 2:30 pm

UAB at LA Tech (CBSSN) 2:30 pm

Middle Tennessee at FIU (ESPN3) 5 pm

MTSU IS BOWL ELIGIBLE, FOUR MORE ON THE VERGE

Joining UTSA (9-2), North Texas (6-5) and WKU (7-4), Middle Tennessee is now bowl eligible (6-5), while Florida Atlantic (5-6), Rice (5-6), UAB (5-6) and UTEP (5-6) are just one win away heading into the final weekend of the regular season.

TWO STILL ALIVE FOR FINAL C-USA CHAMPIONSHIP GAME PLACE
Though North Texas (5-2 C-USA) is in the driver’s seat for the 2022 Ryan C-USA Championship Game, WKU (5-2 C-USA) is still very much alive for the final spot and an opportunity for a rematch with regular season champion UTSA. Though Florida Atlantic could also potentially finish in a three-way tie with North Texas and WKU at 5-3, they would not win that by virtue of the combined record tiebreaker between those three teams (see below for further explanation). North Texas can clinch a spot in the title game with a win over Rice in the final week of the season, OR
if they were to lose to Rice AND FAU beats WKU, it would be a three-way tie at 5-3 with FAU and WKU (North Texas would win the three-way tiebreaker by virtue of holding a 2-0 record against FAU and WKU, while FAU would be 1-1 and WKU would be 0-2 in this scenario). WKU can clinch a spot in the title game with a win in the final week of the regular season at FAU coupled with a North Texas loss to Rice.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK, PRESENTED BY BLENDERS EYEWEAR (WEEK 12)
OFFENSE
QB CHASE CUNNINGHAM, MTSU
Redshirt Senior, Knoxville, Tennessee
Cunningham threw for a career-high 448 yards on a personal-best 40 completions (second most completions in school history) in Middle Tennessee’s 49-21 win over Florida Atlantic. Five touchdown passes are the 12th-most in a single game in the country this season and second-most in C-USA and his 40 completions in a game are the sixth-most nationally in 2022. Cunningham set single-game program half records by completing 31-42 passes for 372 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. It was his second 400-yard passing game of his career.

DEFENSE
DB TELDRICK ROSS, MTSU
Redshirt Junior, Macon, Georgia
Ross finished with seven tackles and a career-high five pass break-ups in Middle Tennessee’s 49-21 win over Florida Atlantic on Saturday to lift the Blue Raiders to six wins and bowl eligibility. Five pass break-ups in a single game is the most in Conference USA and second-most in the country this season (one shy of the national high this year).

SPECIAL TEAMS
K, JARED SACKETT, UTSA
Redshirt Senior, Fort Worth, Texas
Sackett extended his streak of consecutive field goals made to nine, after going 2-2 in UTSA’s 41-7 road win over Rice on a cold and rainy Saturday afternoon in Houston. The senior kicker split the uprights from 30 and 36 yards in the third quarter to help the Roadrunners clinch the C-USA regular season crown and the right to host the championship game for the second straight year. Sackett also made all five extra-point attempts to push his season tally to 48 without a miss. Sackett is 17-21 on the year, ranking 16th nationally with 1.55 field goals per game.

QUICK HITTERS
A LOOK AT WEEK 13
Ten C-USA teams are in action yet again this week, all of which are key conference fixtures. A five-game slate on Saturday kicks off at 11 a.m. CT in Boca Raton between Florida Atlantic and WKU, a 1 p.m. CT matchup that sees North Texas host Rice, a 2:30 p.m. kickoff in San Antonio between regular season champion UTSA and the UTEP, another 2:30 p.m. CT kickoff in Ruston between UAB and Louisiana Tech, and a 5 p.m. CT kickoff in Miami as FIU hosts Middle Tennessee.

A lot is at stake when WKU (7-5, 5-2 C-USA) travels to Boca Raton to take on Florida Atlantic (5-6, 4-3 C-USA) on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT on CBS Sports Network. WKU has an opportunity to potentially clinch a return trip to San Antonio for the 2022 Ryan Conference USA Championship Game with a win (and a North Texas loss to Rice), while Florida Atlantic is seeking its sixth win and bowl eligibility. WKU fell 41-17 at Auburn last week in a non-conference tilt, while FAU was beaten 49-21 at Middle Tennessee last week.

North Texas (6-5, 5-2 C-USA) has its second chance to clinch a berth in the 2022 Ryan C-USA Championship Game and can do so with a win, when it hosts Rice (5-6, 3-4 C-USA) at 1 p.m. CT in Denton on ESPN+. North Texas was off last week, but fell 41- 21 at UAB on Nov. 12, while Rice was beaten 41-7 at home last week. The Owls can earn bowl eligibility with a win and reach the postseason for the first time since 2014.

USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll No. 25 UTSA (9-2, 7-0 C-USA) hosts UTEP (5-6, 3-4 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CT on Stadium. UTSA has already sewn up hosting duties for the 2022 Ryan C-USA Championship Game, but is looking to finish a perfect 8-0 in conference play, something that eluded them in the final week of the regular season in 2021. UTEP on the other hand, is seeking a sixth win and bowl eligibility in a second straight season under head coach Dana Dimel. UTSA was dominant last week in a 41-7 win at Rice, while UTEP won comfortably, 40-6, at home over FIU.

UAB (5-6, 3-4 C-USA) travels to Ruston to take on Louisiana Tech (3-8, 2-5 C-USA) on Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m. CT, on CBS Sports Network. UAB is looking to win its sixth game of the season and earn bowl eligibility, while LA Tech is in search of a positive punctuation on the 2022 season, the first under new head coach Sonny Cumbie. UAB fell at No. 6 LSU last week 41-10, while the Bulldogs dropped a
26-21 decision at Charlotte.

The final game of the day sees Middle Tennessee (6-5, 3-4 C-USA) travels to Miami to take on FIU (4-7, 2-5 C-USA) at 5 p.m. CT on ESPN3. Middle Tennessee handled its business last week, 49-21 on senior day against Florida Atlantic, while FIU fell 40-6 on the road at UTEP. Middle Tennessee is in search of a perfect 3-0 record against teams from the Sunshine State after already having dispatched of then-No. 25 Miami and Florida Atlantic.

UTSA CLINCHES SPOT AND HOSTING DUTIES FOR C-USA TITLE GAME
UTSA (9-2, 7-0 C-USA) was dominant for the second consecutive week, beating Rice (5-6, 3-4 C-USA) 41-7 on the road on Saturday afternoon to clinch a berth and hosting duty for the 2022 Ryan C-USA Championship Game. QB Frank Harris totaled five touchdowns (three on the ground) in just two and-a-half quarters of play, while carrying seven times for 124 yards in the win. UTSA’s defense forced three Rice turnovers and held
the Owls to just 230 yards of total offense (3.1 yards per play).

Rice travels to North Texas next week with a chance to earn a sixth win and bowl eligibility. North Texas on the other hand, can clinch a spot to play UTSA on Dec. 2 in San Antonio with a win.

MTSU GETS BOWL ELIGIBLE WITH 49-21 WIN OVER FLORIDA ATLANTIC
Middle Tennessee is now bowl eligible for the seventh time in the last 10 seasons after a commanding 49-21 win over Florida Atlantic (5-6, 4-3 C-USA) on Saturday, where the Blue Raiders totaled 615 yards of total offense at a 6.8 yards per play clip. QB Chase Cunningham threw for 448 yards and five touchdowns, while RB Frank Peasant found the end zone on three occasions (twice through the air). Peasant caught eight passes for 107 yards, and WR Jaylin Lane hauled in eight for 95 yards. Defensively, LB Christian Dixon led the Blue Raiders with eight tackles, a sack, 1.5 tackles for loss and a forced fumble in the win.

UTEP PICKS UP FIFTH WIN OF THE SEASON
UTEP (5-6, 3-4 C-USA) moved within one win of bowl eligibility with a 40-6 win over FIU on Saturday in El Paso. The UTEP defense held FIU to 71 yards of total offense, the fifth-fewest allowed by a team in C-USA history.

FEWEST YARDS ALLOWED GAME
41 Southern Miss vs. Savannah State (9-10-16)
53 Cincinnati vs. Kansas (9-20-97)
60 Louisville vs. Grambling (9-9-00)
70 UTEP vs. UTSA (10-25-14)
71 UTEP vs. FIU (11-19-22)

WR Rey Flores led the Miners on the ground, carrying 13 times for 128 yards and two scores in the win. UTEP ran for 335 as a team.

Charlotte (3-9, 2-6 C-USA) picked up a 26-21 win in its final game of the season, knocking off Louisiana Tech (3-8, 2-5 C-USA) on Saturday on Senior Day. RB Cameron Camp carried 11 times for 111 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Louisiana Tech wraps its season next week at home against UAB.

WKU FALLS AT AUBURN
WKU (7-5) fell 41-17 at Auburn (5-6) in its final nonconference game of the season. The Hilltoppers rallied to tie the game at 17-17 after trailing early, however turnovers doomed the Hilltoppers on Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium. WR Malachi Corley led the way offensively for WKU, hauling in 12 catches for 99 yards. WKU (5-2 in C-USA play) remains in the C-USA title game chase and would clinch a spot next week with a win over Florida Atlantic, combined with a North Texas loss to Rice in Denton.

UAB DROPS GAME AT NO. 6 LSU
UAB (5-6) lost 41-10 at No. 6 LSU (9-2) under the lights in a rainy Death Valley in Baton Rouge on Saturday night. The Blazers need a win next week in its final game of the season to earn win No. 6 and bowl eligibility. UAB travels to Ruston, Louisiana, to take on Louisiana Tech at 2:30 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network. It was a tough night in Baton Rouge for the Blazers, who were led defensively by DB Jalen Key, who recorded a game-high 12 tackles, nine of which were solo.

Provided below are some select quotes from Julian Edelman: A Football Life:

– “He was one of the most dependable players that I have ever played with. His heart and his toughness will forever go down in what his character is all about, and that’s what we all love about him.” – Tom Brady

– “I knew football. So it gave me an opportunity to play undersized and really learn technique of how to play the game with angles and vision and setting up blocks. Even when I was a smaller player though, I always felt I was the best football player on the field at all times.” – Julian Edelman on switching positions to quarterback in high school

– “I just walked away thinking ‘I can’t believe this guy’s work ethic.’ His determination to try and play in the National Football League is what stuck with me.” – Scott O’Brien

– “I think that play is really a true signature play for Julian. His competitiveness, his aggressiveness, his physical and mental toughness to fight and compete and ultimately, to concentrate to secure the ball in an almost impossible situation.”  – Bill Belichick on Edelman’s crucial catch in Super Bowl LI

– “He was bummed. But Julian and I have a rabbi lesson every Friday and we talk about sadness. We stayed sad for a day, then we said, ‘Nothing we can do, let’s just move forward.'” – Frank Edelman on Julian’s recovery from an ACL injury

– “He takes his craft seriously. He was an Emmy nominee even after year one. Which means that people saw the impressive talent that was there. Year two he is delivering substance.” – James Brown on Edelman joining the Inside The NFL cast

– “It was definitely a team journey and I wouldn’t be there without my dad or without my mom, because there are sacrifices that you have when you’re trying to chase dreams.” – Julian Edelman

New York’s 11 occurrences of 35 shots or more or tied for the third most in the league while its six occasions with 40-plus shots ranks fourth in the league.

SPREADING IT OUT

The last time New York had three 20-point scorers prior to its 20th game in a season was in 2006-07 (Jaromir Jagr, Brendan Shanahan & Michael Nylander). The Blueshirts are one of four teams (NYR, DAL, TOR, EDM) with three players with 20 or more points this season.

FOX ON FIRE

PANARIN ONE ASSIST AWAY FROM 400
Artemi Panarin is one assist away from 400 in his career. In notching the feat, Panarin would be the third player in the NHL to record 400 or more assists since Panarin made his NHL debut in 2015-16 (McDavid – 474, Kane – 408). If Panarin records one assist tonight in his 528th game, he would require the 22nd fewest games of any NHL skater to reach the milestone and the fifth fewest of any active player (McDavid – 426 GP, Crosby – 448 GP, Malkin – 527 GP).

Panarin would become the 57th undrafted player in league history to collect 400 assists and of those undrafted players, he would notch 400 assists in the fifth fewest games. Of his 399 assists, Mika Zibanejad has the most goals from Panarin with 41 while Chris Kreider is tied for fourth with 32. Panarin has 10 points in his last 11 games (1G-9A) and 22 points (5G-17A) in 19 games. Panarin ranks tied for seventh in the league in assists. Since 2019-20, Panarin ranks tied for second in the NHL in assists and fifth in points. His 80 multi-point games are the
fifth most in the league since 2019-20.

Zibanejad was the first Rangers player to reach 10 goals and 10 assists in a season in 18 games or fewer since Marian Gaborik in 2009-10 (12G-10A—22 PTS in 16 GP). When Zibanejad records a point this season, the Rangers are 9-2-2 and 5-0-0 when he notches multiple points. Seven of Zibanejad’s 10 goals have come on the power play, his seven PPGs rank tied for the most in the NHL (McDavid – 7). Moore became the first California-born skater to record a hat trick for a California-based team in NHL history. The Thousand Oaks, Calif. native is the sixth California-born skater overall to record a hat trick in league history. It marked the first three-goal performance by an LA King since Viktor Arvidsson on March 4, 2022 versus Columbus:

STAT OF THE GAME
Forward Blake Lizotte scored his first career NHL game-winning goal last season against the Rangers on Jan. 10, 2022, guiding the Kings to a 3-1 victory over the New York. Lizotte enters tonight with four points in four career games against New York, tallying a point in each contest he’s played versus the Rangers. The Lindstrom, Minn. native has six points (5-1=6) in 21 games this season, and sits five goals shy of tying his career-high of 10 previously set in the 2021-22 season. Lizotte has registered 63 points (24-39=63) in 198 career NHL games, all with the Kings. With two more games played, Lizotte can become 45th active undrafted skater to appear in 200 games.

Per NHL PR, among players to debut with the Kings in the past 20 years, only Anze Kopitar (32), Michael Cammalleri (29), Gabriel Vilardi (26) and Tyler Toffoli (24) have scored more goals through 100 contests.
