WHAT TO KNOW
The Devils’ memorable 13-game winning streak ended on Wednesday night, after Toronto defeated Jersey’s team 2-1 at the Rock.
The Devils’ streak tied the franchise record for consecutive wins in a single season, which was earned Feb. 26, 2001, to Mar. 23, 2001.
The streak marked the NHL’s longest winning streak for the 2022-23 campaign, while Vegas’ nine-game winning streak ranked second for this season: Oct. 24-Nov. 10 (9-0-0).
The Devils enter tonight’s contest vs Buffalo with a 7-1-0 record in one-goal games. The seven wins are tied with Los Angeles and Vegas for the most wins decided by one goal in the NHL this season.
Tonight marks the second time this season that New Jersey entails a back-to-back set. The team hosts Washington on Saturday night.
On Wednesday, the Devils trailed 2-0 after the first period for the first time on their 13-game winning streak. The team trailed by two goals once on the streak, which was on Nov. 3, at Edmonton, when the team trailed the Oilers 3-1 after the second period (4-3, W).
The Devils earned five shots on goal in the first period, which tied a season-low for shots on goal in a single period this season (3 times, last: 11/21, vs EDM, 1st period, 5-2, W).
On Wednesday, the Devils were held scoreless after two periods of play for the second time this season, last: Oct. 28, vs COL, 1-0, W. The Devils are now 9-1-0 vs Canadian opponents this season.
After Wednesday’s loss, the Devils are 1-4-0 when trailing after two periods of play this season. Jersey also fell to 6-1-0 when trailing first in a game this season.
The team is 10-1-0 for the month of November, which tied the franchise record for the most wins in November: 10 wins: 1997-98 (10-4-0).
After Wednesday’s loss, the team recorded less than three goals in a game for the first time this season since Jersey’s 1-0 win over Colorado on Oct. 28, at the Rock (9 games).
The Devils are 13-4-0 when outshooting an opponent this season.
Jersey’s team enters Friday’s contest riding an eight-game road winning streak, which ranks third in franchise history. The Devils’ longest road winning streak was earned via Feb. 27, 2001, to Apr. 7.
Jersey’s second longest road winning streak is nine games, which was earned from Oct. 8, 2009, to Nov. 12.
Looking ahead…The last time the Devils were in first place for their division after the team’s first 20 games to start a season was Nov.
21, 2017, per NHL Pr.
As of Nov. 24, the Devils ranked first in the NHL in shots against, per game at 24.8, while Carolina ranks second at 25.4.
Additionally, as Nov. 24, the Devils are ranked second for shots on goal, per game, at 36.4 behind the Florida Panthers (40.4).

Since 1994-95, the franchise’s first Stanley Cup championship, the Devils have finished a season averaging under 25 shots against, per game seven times:
23.7 1997-98
24.7 1998-99
24.7 2000-01
23.2 2001-02
23.6 2002-03
24.4 2003-04
23.1 2012-13

The team clinched a playoff berth in six of those seasons, while winning a Stanley Cup championship in 2002-03, plus advancing to the Stanley Cup final in 2000-01. The team didn’t clinch a playoff berth in the shortened (lockout year) in 2012-13. Since 1994-95, the team’s highest shots per game total is 33.1, which was earned in 1999-00. The team then won its second Stanley Cup championship.

The Devils officially announced and revealed their second-ever Adidas Reverse Retro sweater, which turns back the clock and nods to the franchise’s Colorado roots. The team is scheduled to wear the sweaters four times this season and twice on the road:

It was Sorokin’s second shutout of the 2022-23 campaign (last: Oct. 26 vs. NYR), and his 49 saves were the third-most in a shutout by an Islander goalie in franchise history (J. Halak 51, G. Healy 50). He enters tonight’s matchup as one of five NHL netminders to post at least two shutouts so far this season. Sorokin becomes one of just three goalies in the expansion era to have 12 shutouts in their first 89 NHL games (T. Esposito, G. Resch).

SIX STRAIGHT
Islanders forward Mathew Barzal has recorded points in his last six games, the longest streak by an Islander this season. He has tallied eight points (2g, 6a) in since November 14. Barzal’s 21 assists in 21 games are second-most in the NHL (MacKinnon, 22), and the Coquitlam, BC native leads the Islanders in points (23) and assists (21). Barzal has found the scoresheet in four of his last five meetings with the Blue Jackets (dating back to October 21, 2021). Barzal’s 21 assists in 21 games is the 11th time in club history that an Islander has carried an assist-per-game pace through the first 21 games of the season. Bryan Trottier did so six times, and the last Islander to do so was Josh Bailey in the 2017-18 season.

25

Islanders defenseman Sebastian Aho recorded his second goal of the season in the Islanders’ win on Wednesday night vs. Edmonton. Aho has four points (1g, 3a) in four career games vs. Columbus, and the last time these teams met, Aho tallied two assists in a single contest for the first time in his career. Aho’s goal on Wednesday was the 17th goal and 49th point by an Islanders blueliner this season.

ON THE ROAD
Tonight, the Islanders will play their fifth road game in their last six contests. The Islanders have collected victories as the visiting team in their last three Eastern Conference matchups (NYR on Nov. 8, OTT on Nov. 14, TOR on Nov. 21). The Islanders are 3-2-0 in their last five on the road, and look to improve upon their 6-5-0 road record so far this season.

STORYLINES
SHORT-HANDED
On Wednesday night against Edmonton, Islanders forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau scored the eventual game-winner shorthanded. It was the 17th SHG of his career, tying Cal Clutterbuck, Jonathan Toews, and Jordan Staal for seventh place amongst active NHLers. Pageau scored less than three minutes later on the power play, becoming the seventh Islanders player to score both shorthanded and on the power play in a five-minute span. Pageau, 30, tallied the goals in a span of 2:06, the third-fastest an Islander has scored an SHG and PPG in franchise history. The Islander to
score a PPG and SHG in the same game was Zach Parise on April 12, 2022 vs. Pittsburgh.

3

Islanders defenseman Adam Pelech leads the team in time on ice with 21:21 per game, and plus/minus with a plus-nine through 21 games. Pelech leads active Islander defensemen in games played, and has skated each of his 402 contests in an Islanders uniform. The Islanders are 5-1-0 when Pelech finds the scoresheet this season, and the Toronto, ON native added his seventh assist of the season on Wednesday night vs. Edmonton. Pelech has tallied three multi-point games in 20 contests, the first time he has recorded as many multi-point games in a single campaign since the 2017-18 season. Pelech also set a new single-game season high amongst Islanders on Nov. 3, as he skated 24:30 TOI (his highest TOI since Dec. 19, 2021). The 28-year-old defenseman is nine goals shy of his career 100th.

THE THIRD
The Islanders remain most productive in the third period. 12 of the 13 victories they have captured so far this season have included an Islander finding the back of the net in the third (12-5-0 when they find the back of the net in the final frame). Since October 26, 48% (23 of the last 48) of Islander goals have been scored in the third. Their 31 third period goals this season are tied with the Boston Bruins and Buffalo Sabres for most in the NHL.

POINTS LEADERS
Brock Nelson leads the Islanders with nine goals. He has recorded a point in the last nine of the last ten Islander wins, and scored a goal in eight of them. He is second on the Islanders in points (20). The Warroad, MN native has recorded a team-high 66 shots on goal this season, and has been held off the scoresheet just four times this month. Islanders defenseman Noah Dobson leads Islanders blueliners in all three scoring categories, with 14 points (six goals, eight assists) through 21 games. Dobson’s six goals are tied with Cale Makar and Adam Fox for third-most in the league amongst defensemen (E. Karlsson 11, R. Dahlin 8). Dobson has tallied 62 shots on goal this season, leading defensmen by far and second only to Brock Nelson’s 66 amongst Islanders and eighth amongst NHL defensemen. The next closest defensemen to Dobson’s 62 shots on goal is Scott Mayfield, with 31.

SCORING
Entering tonight’s game, the Islanders have outscored opponents 69-55 through 21 games. Amongst the Metropolitan Divsion, only Pittsburgh Penguins (71) and New Jersey Devils (74) have recorded more goals this season. The Islanders are 8-1-0 when scoring first, and each of their last three victories (OTT, TOR, EDM) have seen the Islanders open the score. The Islanders are 6-3-0 when they find the back of the net at least three times so far this season. They have found the back of the net three times in all 13 of their wins this season.

HOME IN NOVEMBER
The Blue Jackets fell to 4-2-1 in the last seven games overall and 4-2-0 in their past six home games following a 3-1 loss to the Canadiens on Wednesday. It concluded a stretch of four consecutive games against Atlantic Division teams from November 17-23 (2-2-0). Friday’s game vs. the Islanders wraps up a season-high six-game homestand for the Blue Jackets (3-2-0). It’s part of a stretch of eight-of-10 games played at Nationwide Arena from November 10-28. Today’s game also concludes a stretch of eight consecutive games against Eastern Conference teams (4-1-1). The club will play three-straight against the Western Conference from November 26-December 2.

TWO DIFFERENT STRETCHES
Nine of the club’s first 12 games were competed against teams that made the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs, including facing off against the Stanley Cup champion Avalanche twice and Stanley Cup finalist once (Tampa Bay Lightning). The club is now in the middle of a stretch of 11-of-14 contests from November 10-December 7 played against teams that failed to make the postseason. The only playoff teams over the second stretch are Florida (Nov. 20), Nashville (Nov. 26) and Pittsburgh (Dec. 6).

FROM THE BLUELINE
CBJ blueliners have collected 7-18-25 in the last 13 outings and 11-24-35 in 19 games this season to rank sixth-T in the NHL in goals. Defenseman Erik Gudbranson tallied two assists last Thursday for his first multi-point game as a Blue Jacket as well as his third career multi-assist and seventh career multi-point effort. He is now one point from 100 for his NHL career with 27-72-99 in 659 games. Vladislav Gavrikov notched his second career overtime winner and fifth career game-winning goal on Nov. 15 vs. the Flyers, finishing with 1-1-2, while also skating in a career-high 28:40 TOI (previous 28:20 on Apr. 22, 2022 vs. OTT). He became the fifth different defenseman in NHL history to score each of his first two or more goals of a season in overtime and is also one off the franchise record for overtime goals by a defenseman in a single season (3; Seth Jones, 2016-17 & 2018-19).

ROOKIE REPORT
The club currently has eight rookies on the roster with forwards Trey Fix-Wolansky, Liam Foudy, Kent Johnson and Carson Meyer along with defensemen Nick Blankenburg, Marcus Bjork and Jake Christiansen and goaltender Daniil Tarasov. The skaters have had a strong start to the season, combining for 7-12-19 in 19 games. They have helped CBJ rank third-T among NHL teams in goals and fifth in points. Johnson, who was selected fifth overall at the 2021 NHL Draft, ranks third-T among NHL rookies in goals and fifth-T in points-per-game (.56; min 7 GP) with 4-5-9 in 16 games. He has registered 1-2-3 in his last five outings and 4-4-8 in his past 13 contests played. Bjork, who recorded an assist on Sunday, tallied points in his first two NHL games after scoring his first career goal in his NHL debut on Nov. 12 at NY Islanders and picking up his first career assist on Nov. 15 vs. Philadelphia. He is the first blueliner and seventh player overall in franchise history to score in his debut.

CAPTAIN BOONE JENNER
Boone Jenner had his four-game points streak (4-2-6 from Nov. 15-20) and six-game home points streak (7-2-9 from Nov. 5-20) snapped on Wednesday. He has 7-3-10 in the last nine contests overall. The forward ranks seventh in the NHL in goals scored at home this season with 8-5-13 in 13 outings and is eighth-T in goals scored in the month of November (seven). He also ranks seventh-T in the NHL in faceoff wins (232-of-411 faceoffs; 56.5 pct.). The 29-year-old, who was selected 37th overall at the 2011 NHL Draft, is the longest-tenured Blue Jacket in his 10th season with the club, including his second as the team’s captain. The forward skated in his 600th career game on Nov. 4 vs. Colorado, becoming just the third player to reach the milestone with the franchise. With his second goal on Nov.15 vs. Philadelphia, Jenner notched his 150th career goal with the Blue Jackets and became the third player to reach the milestone with the franchise, joining Rick Nash (289) and Cam Atkinson (213). He also ranks fifth on the franchise’s all-time list in points (298).

RK PLAYER TOTAL GP SEASONS WITH CBJ

  1. Rick Nash 674 2002-12 (9 seasons)
  2. Cam Atkinson 627 2011-21 (10 seasons)
  3. Boone Jenner 608 2013-current (10 seasons)
  4. Nick Foligno 599 2012-21 (9 seasons)

HERE’S JOHNNY!
Left wing Johnny Gaudreau, who registered his second three-point effort of the season with 1-2-3 on Sunday, had his four-game points streak (1-5-6 from Nov. 15-20) snapped on Wednesday and now has 2-7-9 in his last seven games. The six-time All-Star leads the club in assists and scoring and ranks second in goals with 7-11-18 in 19 games while recording points in 12 of his contests. The winger has done most of his damage at home with 7-9-16 in 13 outings, ranking seventh-T in the NHL in points. He played in his 313th consecutive game on Wednesday, the third-longest active iron man streak in the NHL and trailing only Phil Kessel (1,003) and Brent Burns (699). The Salem, New Jersey native, who signed a seven-year contract with Columbus in July, has collected 217-410-627 in 621 NHL games, including a career-high 40-75-115 in 82 games with Calgary last season when he earned First Team All-NHL honors.

TOUGH TO REPLACE Z
Zach Werenski recorded his first multi-point game of the season with 1-1-2 in last Thursday’s win over Philadelphia to extend his points-streak to three-straight games (1-3-4) before leaving the with an upper body injury. Unfortunately, that was the last CBJ will likely see the club’s top defenseman this regular season as it was announced Friday that he suffered a separated shoulder and torn labrum and likely to miss six months. He led the club’s blueliners in goals, assists and points at the time of the injury with 3-5-8 in 13 games. The two-time NHL All-Star blueliner set single-season career highs in assists, points and time on ice and posted the third-most assists (tied) and points by a defenseman in a single season in franchise history with 11-37-48 and 25:40 TOI in 68 games in 2021-22.

World Cup Betting: Whose Stock is Rising After First Round of Games?

Brazil’s win against Serbia in Qatar on Thursday night brought the first round of World Cup games to a close. So which teams saw their stock rocket in the first week like an unstoppable Saudi strike into the top corner? And which teams saw their stock dive like Cristiano Ronaldo in Ghana’s penalty box?

Stock Falling – Brazil
A controversial one, maybe. But stunning bicycle kicks aside, Brazil took a long time to break down a well-drilled and defensively minded Serbia team.

The Seleção Canarinho struggled for rhythm in the first half, as it gradually began to dawn on the world this team might not be the unstoppable force we thought it was.

With Neymar, the electric Vinicius Jr., Raphinha, and Richarlison up front, and the likes of Gabriels Jesus and Martinelli on the bench, Brazil has an attacking force to terrify the world.

That showed in the second half. But the team’s other components need to gel, and soon, if it’s to go all the way. Although we should note Casemiro was also excellent tonight.

Brazil was a 4-1 favorite to win the tournament at the start. Since beating Serbia, the team is now even shorter, at 5/2. Early days, but we’re not so sure.

Stock Rising – Spain
Spain announced itself as an emphatic contender to win the World Cup with a 7-0 thrashing of Costa Rica on Wednesday. We all know that Spain is technically elite, and the players showed it. But the sheer ruthlessness in front of goal was a surprise.

Gavi
Spain wonderkid Gavi proves he’s the real deal as he celebrates scoring against Costa Rica on Wednesday. (Image: Football 365)
Jordi Alba was sensational, completing a first-half hat trick in just ten minutes, while youngsters Gavi and Pedri showed why we should believe the hype. This team was 8/1 before the tournament started. It’s now around 13/2. That’s still a really good bet.

Stock Falling – Germany
Oh dear. What happened here? In Japan, they’re calling it “the Miracle of Doha” and there have been calls to mark the national team’s shock 2-1 victory against Germany with a public holiday.

The result seemed impossible after a lousy first half for Japan. In fact, the team had just 26.2% of possession for the entirety of the game, while riding its luck and hitting twice, decisively, on the counter.

That’s international football. The early stages of big tournaments almost always produce some shock results, as smaller nations defend deep and look to hit on the transition.

It’s disaster for Germany, which must beat Spain to have a chance of progressing past the group stage, and the Spanish aren’t in the mood to give the Germans an inch. Pre-tournament, the team was 10/1 and among the favorites. Now, it’s 25/1.

Stock Rising – England
England looked undercooked in the lead up to the World Cup, and there were questions about whether its technically gifted new golden generation had run out of steam just at the wrong time. Its dismal 4-0 defeat to Hungary in June was its worst at home since 1928.

None of that was on show this week when the team put six past Iran. And yes, it’s “only” Iran. But England played like a club side on Monday, pressing and counter pressing to devastating effect, while combining like a group of players who play with each other week in, week out. Keep that up and it has a chance.

Always among the favorites going into the tournament, England is now 7-1 to win the whole thing, although questions about defensive frailties and manager Gareth Southgate’s tactical limitations remain.

Stock Falling – Portugal
Portugal squeaked through 3-2 against a limited Ghanian team in a highly entertaining game. That match saw Cristiano Ronaldo become the only footballer to score a goal in five World Cups. That’s after he won and then converted a highly dubious penalty.

But considering the amount of individual talent in this squad, it has to go down as a poor performance from the Portuguese, and one that would flounder against superior opposition. With Bruno Fernandez starting on the right wing in a 4-3-3 and Joao Felix on the left wing, it felt like Fernando Santos was trying to cram all that talent onto the pitch somewhat desperately, irrespective of natural positions.

Ronaldo, at 37, is still one of the best players in the world. But his prodigious ego threatens to disrupt any project he’s involved in. He will be determined to win the World Cup single-handedly, nevertheless.

Stock Rising – Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia may not be everyone’s favorite authoritarian petrostate at the moment. But it was hard not to fall in love with its soccer team when it pulled off one of the most surprising results in the history of the World Cup on Wednesday.

Its shock – SHOCK! – victory against Argentina at the Lusail Iconic Stadium ended the latter’s 36-game unbeaten run, and gave the great Lionel Messi something to chew on.

The game was won in five mad minutes in the second half. And Salem Aldawsari’s winner could even be described as “Messi-esque,” as he plucked the ball from the sky and dribbled around two Argentine defenders before curling the ball into the top corner from the edge of the area.

Argentina (stock falling) was a 6/1 second favorite when the tournament started. It’s now eighth favorite at about 8/1. But it still has what it takes to progress to the next round.

NHL Morning Skate – Nov. 25, 2022

0

* The NHL will reach the Quarter Mark during Friday’s 14-game slate. A full day of hockey starts at 1 p.m. ET and will end about 12 hours later.

* The 2022 NHL Thanksgiving Showdown returns today with a doubleheader on TNT, Sportsnet and TVA Sports that opens with an intrastate rivalry between the Penguins and Flyers and concludes with the Blues visiting the Lightning.

* Legendary NHL defenseman Borje Salming, who revealed in August that he was battling ALS, passed away Thursday at the age of 71. Salming, the NHL’s first star player from Sweden and a Maple Leafs icon, was a Hall of Fame defenseman and pioneer who changed the perception of European players when he joined the Maple Leafs for the 1973-74 season.

2022 NHL THANKSGIVING SHOWDOWN DOUBLEHEADER LEADS FRIDAY SLATE
In addition to leftovers and Black Friday shopping, the 2022 NHL Thanksgiving Showdown returns with a doubleheader that will be broadcast nationally in the U.S. and Canada. It opens with a pair of Pennsylvania rivals squaring off when the Flyers host the Penguins and concludes with two teams who have combined for three of the last four Stanley Cup championships when the Blues visit the Lightning.

* The Flyers have a record of 103-36-12 (218 points) in 151 all-time home games against the Penguins – they are the only franchise to own 100+ wins on home ice when facing Pittsburgh. That includes a 6-2-0 mark in the last eight times they have hosted their intrastate rivals dating to Feb. 23, 2019.

* Penguins forward Sidney Crosby has recorded a point in 11 consecutive regular-season games against the Flyers dating to Jan. 31, 2020 (9-9—18 in 11 GP), marking the longest active point streak by one player against Philadelphia.

Nikita Kucherov leads all Lightning skaters with 10-18—28 in 19 games this season, including nine multi-point efforts. Should he record multiple points Friday, it would mark the second time in his career that he has posted 30 points within his first 20 games of a season. He previously reached the 30-point benchmark in 18 games during the 2017-18 campaign en route to his first career 100-point season.

* The Blues will look to halt the streaky win-loss trend to their season so far when they visit the Lightning – they opened the campaign 3-0-0 before losing eight consecutive games and following that up with seven straight wins before dropping their most recent appearance (6-2 L at BUF on Nov. 23). One streak they would like to continue is Jordan Binnington’s recent success head-to-head versus the Lightning: Binnington is 5-0-0 in his last five appearances against Tampa Bay dating to Feb. 7, 2019 (1.94 GAA. .938 SV%, 1 SO).

* The Bruins can set an NHL record for longest home winning streak to start a season should they improve to 12-0-0 at TD Garden today in their game against the Hurricanes.

* Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane (762) enters Friday one assist shy of tying Chris Chelios (763) for the fourth-most by a U.S.-born player. They trail Phil Housley (894), Mike Modano (813) and Brian Leetch (781).

* The two longest point streaks of 2022-23 will both be on the line with Maple Leafs forward Mitchell Marner (3-16—19 in 14 GP) and Stars forward Jason Robertson (14-10—24 in 13 GP) both in action. Marner can become just the sixth player in Maple Leafs history to register a 15-game point streak. Robertson, meanwhile, will attempt to mark the fifth instance of a Stars/North Stars player reaching 14 games – and first since the club has played out of Dallas (since 1993-94).

* Sharks forward Logan Couture can extend his goal streak to six games, which would tie Robertson (6 GP) and Lightning forward Nikita Kucherov (6 GP) for the longest goal streak by any player in 2022-23.
