IN SUMMARY
Last season, Carolina earned just the second regular-season sweep of Boston in franchise history (2011-12). Frederik Andersen posted a 3-0-0 record, 0.33 goals-against average, .990 save percentage, two shutouts and an assist against the Bruins, marking the highest single-season save percentage in franchise history by a goaltender in at least three games against a single opponent. Carolina outscored Boston 16-1 in three games and scored 11 consecutive goals at TD Garden over parts of their two road games (1/18-2/10), becoming the second team in league history to score 10 straight goals against the Bruins in Boston within a single campaign (DET, 1952-53). The Hurricanes scored six or more goals in both games at TD Garden after Hartford/Carolina had accomplished the feat just four times in 103 previous games in Boston (7: 1/6/00 // 6: 12/18/86, 1/29/87, 2/28/02). The Hurricanes and Bruins then met in the Eastern Conference First Round, with the Hurricanes winning the series in seven games. Carolina registered a +12 goal differential at PNC Arena (18-6) and a -8 goal differential at TD Garden (14-6), failing to win any of its three road games during the series. The two teams have met in the playoffs in three of the last four seasons (also 2019 ECF and 2020 ECFR), and their seven postseason meetings all-time are tied for the Whalers/Hurricanes’ most playoff series against any opponent (also MTL).

MIXIN’ IT UP
Stefan Noesen was assessed a fighting major for dropping the gloves with Troy Stecher during the third period vs. ARI (11/23). According to HockeyFights.com, the fight was the third of his NHL career, as he previously dropped the gloves twice in 2017-18 while with NJD (10/11 at TOR, Matt Martin; 2/3 vs. PIT, Ian Cole). Noesen has also earned seven fighting majors in his AHL career, including two with the Wolves last season. The Hurricanes have now been assessed two fighting majors in 2022-23, as Jalen Chatfield also dropped the gloves with Noah Gregor at SJS (10/14).

WORTH A SHOT
The Hurricanes outshot the Coyotes 36-27 on Wednesday, and they have now outshot their opponents in 17 of 20 games in 2022-23. Carolina has registered 35 or more shots in 11 games this season, tied for the fourth-most such outings of any NHL team. The Hurricanes are posting the fourth-most shots per game of any team this season (35.3) while allowing the second-fewest (25.4), and their +9.9 shot differential ranks second in the NHL (NJD: +11.6). Seth Jarvis posted a team- and season-high five shots against ARI.

CREASE IS THE WORD
Pyotr Kochetkov made his third consecutive start vs. ARI (11/23), the first time any Hurricanes goaltender had started three straight games this season, and he stopped 23 of 26 shots faced in his first career NHL/Hurricanes regulation loss. Kochetkov has now earned a 2-1-2 record, 2.22 goals-against average, .908 save percentage and one shutout in five appearances in 2022-23 and signed a four-year contract extension with Carolina on Wednesday. He began his career as the 12th goaltender in NHL history to win each of his first five regular-season games and entered his last contest as the 13th netminder to earn a point in each of his first seven games (5-0-2). Kochetkov is sharing the crease with Antti Raanta, who has registered a 3-2-2 record, 2.53 goals-against average and .902 save percentage in seven games this season and last appeared in an overtime loss vs. COL (11/17). Both goaltenders faced the Bruins in the playoffs last season, with Kochetkov posting a 1-0 record, 2.30 goals-against average and .938 save percentage and Raanta earning a 3-2 record, 2.37 goals-against average and .927 save percentage.

FACING ADVERSITY
Following three straight overtime losses, the Hurricanes fell to ARI in regulation on Wednesday, extending their winless streak to four games (11/17-11/23: 0-1-3). Before this stretch, Carolina had been held without a win in no more than two consecutive games this season (10/20-10/22: 0-1-1, 11/6-11/9: 0-2-0), and the Hurricanes faced just one winless streak of four games in 2021-22 (3/13-3/20: 0-3-1). Carolina will look to avoid a fifth straight defeat for the first time since 2018-19 (10/28-11/6: 0-4-1) on Friday against the Bruins, who are undefeated on home ice this season (11-0-0).

FINNISH FISH
Sebastian Aho recorded an assist on all three of the Hurricanes’ third-period goals at WPG (11/21) for his fourth multi-assist game of the season, tied with Martin Necas for the team high. Aho has posted both of Carolina’s three-assist games in 2022-23 and leads the team with four three-point games. He also earned three assists in a single period for the first time in his career, becoming the first Hurricanes player to accomplish the feat since Jake Gardiner in the third period of a 6-5 shootout win at VGK on 2/8/20. With the helpers, Aho passed Teuvo Teravainen (2016-present: 231a) and Rod Brind’Amour (2000-10: 104 multi-point games) for the sixth-most assists and fifth-most multi-point games in franchise history, respectively. He also posted three or more points for the 30th time in his NHL/Hurricanes career, tying Blaine Stoughton (1979-84) for the fourth-most three-point games in franchise history. He has tallied a team-high 12 points in 11 games this month (11/3-11/23: 5g, 7a), with five points in his last four games (11/17-11/23: 2g, 3a).

FORGOT ABOUT DREI
Andrei Svechnikov registered two points (1g, 1a) at WPG (11/21), and his five multi-point games this season now rank tied with Sebastian Aho for second on the team behind only Martin Necas (7). He has scored a team-high 13 goals in 2022-23 and ranks tied with Tage Thompson (BUF), Mikko Rantanen (COL) and David Pastrnak (BOS) in that category behind only Bo Horvat (VAN, 16), Connor McDavid (EDM, 16) and Jason Robertson (DAL, 16). Svechnikov is the seventh player to score 13 or more goals through Hartford/Carolina’s first 20 games of any season (14: Blaine Stoughton, 1981-82; Pat Verbeek, 1989-90; Eric Staal, 2005-06 // 13: Blaine Stoughton, 1979-80; Geoff Sanderson, 1993-94; Jeff O’Neill, 2001-02).

FORCE OF NECAS
Martin Necas scored the game-tying, extra-attacker goal with 0:39 left in regulation to force overtime against the Jets on Monday, marking the seventh time in the last 10 seasons (2013-present) that the Hurricanes scored a game-tying goal in the final minute of regulation. Necas leads the team with 23 points (9g, 14a) this season, including four points in his last four games (11/17-11/23: 2g, 2a). Wednesday’s shutout marked the first time in four games that he was held off the scoresheet, and he has already posted three point streaks of at least three games in 2022-23 (also 10/12-10/20: 3-4—7 in 4 GP, 10/24-11/4: 4-6—10 in 6 GP) after managing just one such streak last season (11/16-11/20: 1-3—4 in 3 GP).

Carolina posted an 11-2-0 record with a +16 goal differential (49-33) in afternoon games last season. Six of those games were played as part of afternoon back-to-backs, as the Hurricanes went 5-1-0 with two sweeps (2/20 at PIT, 2/21 at PHI; 4/23 at NJD, 4/24 at NYI) and another first-game victory (3/12 vs. PHI, 3/13 at PIT).

QUICK ON THE DRAW
The Hurricanes won 57.1% of their faceoffs vs. ARI (11/23) and have now won at least 50.0% of their draws in 16 of 20 games this season. Sebastian Aho (10-for-15: 66.7%), Jordan Staal (11-for-17: 64.7%) and Jack Drury (9-for-15: 60.0%) each won the majority of their draws on Wednesday, and Aho (55.5%) and Jesperi Kotkaniemi (55.9%) are each above 55.0% on the season, which would mark a career-high win rate for both players.

GOING BACK-TO-BACK
The Hurricanes are opening their fourth of 14 sets of back-to-back games in 2022-23. Carolina is currently 1-2-0 in the first game and 3-0-0 in the second game of back-to-backs this season.

NBA Preview: Denver Nuggets at Los Angeles Clippers

0

With a full day to savor an overtime victory that began with a sizable fourth-quarter rally, the Denver Nuggets head to Los Angeles for their first meeting of the season against the Clippers on Friday night.

The Nuggets trailed by 15 points in the fourth quarter Wednesday on the road against the Oklahoma City Thunder before they rallied for an eventual 131-126 victory in the extra period. Aaron Gordon erupted for 17 of his 31 points in the fourth quarter, while Nikola Jokic scored 10 of his 39.

Denver shot 57.7 percent (15 of 26) from the field in the fourth quarter and overtime combined to pull off just its second victory in five games. The Nuggets entered just 2-4 over their last six contests following a four-game winning to open November.

Whether the Nuggets are poised for another winning run will depend largely on their health. They pulled off the victory over the Thunder despite playing without starters Jamal Murray (heel) and Michael Porter Jr. (rest). They also were missing Ish Smith (calf), Jeff Green (knee), Bones Hyland (illness) and Payton Watson (illness).

The victory was achieved with 10 active players, nine of whom saw time on the court. Jokic played 43 minutes, while Bruce Brown used his 45 minutes of action to score 17 points with 10 assists and 13 rebounds in his first career triple-double.

The Clippers return home after a 124-107 loss to the Golden State Warriors in San Francisco on Wednesday. The Clippers played without stars Paul George (hamstring) and Kawhi Leonard (ankle) and never threatened after trailing 66-47 at halftime.

Los Angeles received 19 points from Marcus Morris Sr. and 17 points from both Terance Mann and Norman Powell. The defense held Stephen Curry (22 points) well under his season average of 31.6 per game, but Andrew Wiggins had 31 points and went 6 of 10 from 3-point range.

Los Angeles entered the game on a three-game winning streak following Leonard’s return from residual knee soreness after surgery that cost him the entire 2021-22 season, but fell with their team leader out of action again. Sharpshooter Luke Kennard (calf) also was out.

Leonard’s absence was characterized as precautionary after he rolled his ankle in the fourth quarter of Monday’s home victory over the Utah Jazz, but George has now missed two consecutive games, while Kennard has missed the last four.

Like the Nuggets on Wednesday, the Clippers proceeded with 10 healthy players.

NBA Preview: Utah Jazz at Golden State Warriors

0

The Utah Jazz get an opportunity to show off their new look to the defending NBA champions when they visit San Francisco to take on the Golden State Warriors on Friday night.

The matchup of two of the season’s biggest surprises — one positive, one negative — comes two days after the Jazz struggled through arguably their most disappointing effort of the season, while the Warriors were flashing some of their championship form.

The Jazz watched as the Detroit Pistons scorched their defense for 49.4 percent shooting overall and 50.0 percent from 3-point range in a 125-116 surprise upset in Salt Lake City on Wednesday night.

Having ridden a high-flying offense to a 10-3 start, the Jazz lost for the fifth time in their last seven games (and held to fewer than 120 points for the sixth time in that stretch). Meanwhile, Utah’s opponent poured in 120 or more for the fourth time in those seven games, including each of the last two.

Utah has played its last two games without point guard Mike Conley, who suffered a strained left knee last Saturday against Portland. He isn’t expected to return until December.

Collin Sexton has been promoted from Utah’s potent reserve crew to start the last two games with mixed results. He had 10 points and just one assist in a road loss to the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday but turned in a 17-point, 12-assist outing against the Pistons two days later.

Jazz players admitted after Wednesday’s loss that complacency might have set in within a group that began the season with an underdog’s mentality.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr has had a similar complaint about his defending champs as they struggled through a 6-9 start. But things appear to have turned around a bit with Golden State having won three of four, including 124-107 at home over the Clippers on Wednesday.

One key to the recent success has been getting Stephen Curry some help offensively. Klay Thompson, Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins have all had big games of late.

Thompson began the turnaround with 20- and 41-point performances in wins over New York and Houston. Green, who has been seeing more minutes than usual trying to stabilize the second unit, has totaled 23 points, 22 rebounds and 27 assists in the last three wins.

But it was Wiggins who drew Kerr’s biggest praise after Wednesday’s win, one in which he had a season-high 31 points while bombing in six 3-pointers for a second consecutive game.

“He’s shooting the lights out,” Kerr gushed of Wiggins, who has averaged 24.3 points and shot 15-for-29 on threes in Golden State’s last three wins. He, Curry, Thompson and Green all sat out the only loss in the last four contests — Monday at New Orleans.

NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons at Phoenix Suns

The Detroit Pistons own the worst record in the Eastern Conference but are showing improvement with stellar back-to-back road victories.

Detroit now seeks its first three-game winning streak since late last season when it visits the Western Conference-best Phoenix Suns on Friday night.

The Pistons were mired in a seven-game losing streak and were 0-10 on the road before producing a 110-108 win over the Denver Nuggets on Tuesday and adding a 125-116 victory over the Utah Jazz one night later.

Detroit is saddled with a 5-15 record but the consecutive road wins provided a big boost.

Bogdanovic scored 22 points against Denver and 23 against Utah. He played the past three seasons for the Jazz before being dealt to the Pistons in the offseason.

Bogdanovic has been a big hit with Detroit and has scored 20 or more points in five straight outings and seven of the past eight. The 33-year-old is averaging 20.7 points per game.

The Pistons are thriving despite not having second-year pro Cade Cunningham (shin) for the past eight games. There is no timetable for the return of the No. 1 overall draft pick in 2021.

Saddiq Bey (ankle) flew back to Detroit for treatment and will miss his fourth straight game. Isaiah Stewart (toe) will sit out for the sixth straight game.

In addition, Killian Hayes (calf) was injured against the Jazz and isn’t expected to be available against the Suns.

Regardless, Detroit led by as many as 14 points against Utah and had 24 assists against just seven turnovers.

The Suns will be without one of the top ball-handlers in the history of the sport as Chris Paul (heel) was ruled out for the eighth straight game.

Phoenix has gone 4-3 without Paul, including back-to-back home victories over the New York Knicks and Los Angeles Lakers earlier this week.

The consecutive wins were the first since the Suns had a five-game winning streak snapped on Nov. 4.

Deandre Ayton said Phoenix isn’t worried about where the record stands after 17 games. He said the Suns are thinking about bigger things after losing in the NBA Finals to the Milwaukee Bucks two seasons ago and being punched out by the Dallas Mavericks in the second round last season.

Ayton had 14 points and 15 rebounds against the Lakers while Devin Booker and Mikal Bridges each scored 25 points.

Cameron Payne, who has topped 20 points four times since Paul was hurt, had just 11 on 5-of-15 shooting.

Landry Shamet (concussion) will miss his seventh straight contest.

The Suns have won the past three meetings after Detroit prevailed in the previous eight.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Lakers at San Antonio Spurs

The Los Angeles Lakers will be in search of their first road win of the year and hope to have LeBron James back to help Friday when they square off against the struggling Spurs in the first of back-to-back games between the teams in San Antonio.

The teams played in Los Angeles on Sunday with the Lakers cruising to a 123-92 win despite playing without James. James traveled with the team for its three-game Thanksgiving road trip and is expected to play in at least one of the two-games-in-two-nights set in San Antonio.

Los Angeles’ most recent outing was a 115-105 loss at Phoenix on Tuesday that snapped its season-best three-game winning streak. Anthony Davis led the way for the Lakers in the loss, scoring 37 points and grabbing a season-high 21 rebounds.

Davis is the first player in NBA history to score at least 35 points, 20 rebounds, five blocks and five steals since the league started recording blocks and steals.

He also became just the third Laker to score 30 or more points and grab 15 or more rebounds in four consecutive games, joining Elgin Baylor and Shaquille O’Neal.

Lonnie Walker IV scored 24 points, Russell Westbrook added 21 and Austin Reaves hit for 11 points for the Lakers. James did not play because of a lingering adductor injury. Los Angeles has dropped all six of their road games.

Los Angeles has played better as reserves Dennis Schroder and Thomas Bryant have finally seen the court after missing the start of the season. Lakers coach Darvin Ham expects his team to be even stronger when James, who hasn’t played since Nov. 9, returns.

The Spurs have spiraled down the West standings by losing six straight, including a 129-110 blowout at home to New Orleans on Wednesday. San Antonio missed it first eight shots and was down 9-0 before it scored a point, trailed by 10 after one period and by 19 at the half before mustering some fight in the second half.

It was the 11th loss for the Spurs in their past 12 games. Things are so bad in San Antonio right now that coach Gregg Popovich resorted to praising his team for playing New Orleans even after halftime.

Devin Vassell led San Antonio with 26 points, with Doug McDermott adding 21, Jeremy Sochan scoring 12 and Keita Bates-Diop hitting for 10. Jakob Poeltl pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds for the Spurs. Keldon Johnson, who had been San Antonio’s leading scorer, had a season-low five points on 2-of-9 shooting.

NBA Preview: Chicago Bulls at Oklahoma City Thunder

DeMar DeRozan is hopeful the Chicago Bulls’ erratic start to the season will settle into consistent production.

Coming off perhaps their best win and having won back-to-back games, the Bulls look to continue their momentum against the host Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday.

Even during Chicago’s four-game losing streak, which included a home loss to Orlando, that preceded their current winning streak, DeRozan was coming up big.

Over the last six games, the veteran forward is averaging 30.3 points and 4.7 assists while shooting 55.4 percent from the floor.

DeRozan’s impact has gone far beyond the raw numbers, Bulls coach Billy Donovan said after his team’s 118-113 win at Milwaukee on Wednesday.

DeRozan had 36 points on 14-of-24 shooting and added eight assists in the win over the Bucks that began Chicago’s season-long six-game road trip.

Chicago’s Goran Dragic missed Wednesday’s game with a left cervical stinger, opening the way for Coby White to see an expanded role.

Donovan praised White’s resiliency after missing the first eight games of November due to injury and working his way through struggles upon his return.

With wins over the Bucks and the Celtics during their current winning streak, the Bulls have beaten the teams with the NBA’s top two records.

While Chicago has played better of late, the Thunder have struggled.

Oklahoma City has dropped three consecutive games and eight of its last 11.

Wednesday night, the Thunder battled back from a 19-point deficit to take a 15-point lead in the fourth quarter before Denver forced overtime and ultimately won 131-126.

Oklahoma City continues to struggle on the defensive end, having dropped to No. 24 in the league in defensive rating after being in the top 10 earlier this month.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault is confident his team can get back to playing defense the way it did early in the season.

Thunder reserve guard Isaiah Joe is coming off a career-high 21-point performance where he went 7 of 10 from beyond the arc in the loss to the Nuggets.

Friday’s meeting is the first of two meetings between the teams this season.

The Bulls swept last season’s series.
