World Cup Preview: Argentina at Mexico

0

On Tuesday, we witnessed one of the biggest upsets in the history of the World Cup – Saudi Arabia beat Argentina 2-1, thus ending La Selección’s 34-game unbeaten run.

Lionel Messi & Co. have a chance to bounce back to the winning track this Saturday when they play against Mexico. Oddsmakers think they’re going to pull it off, making Argentina an odds-on favorite. Although we do agree with bookies, we also think this is going to be a real thriller.

Argentina Needs to Say Sorry to the Fans With a Big Win on Saturday
If the offside rule didn’t exist, Argentina would’ve beaten Saudi Arabia 4-2. Three of their goals on Tuesday were disallowed due to offside. One of those, however, should not have stood, but that’s a whole different story.

Argentina players mustn’t be angry with the referees, but with themselves. Not being able to score more than one goal (from the penalty spot) against Saudi Arabia is just embarrassing for a team with Lionel Messi, Lautaro Martinez, Angel Di Maria, and others.

We believe that not scoring more than once is even more embarrassing than conceding twice to Saudi Arabia. The thing is that Argentina’s defenders just aren’t great. Their offense, on the other hand, is one of the best in the world. They just didn’t show it in Round 1.

Mexico to Employ the Same Strategy as Saudi Arabia
The Saudis received six yellow cards in the second half, after getting to 2-1. They defended with all they got, which proved to be the right decision. We expect something similar from Mexico.

In Round 1, Mexico showed they know how to defend. Their goalie Guillermo Ochoa showed that he truly is a World Cup specialist – he saved Robert Lewandowski’s penalty on Tuesday.

This team will probably play very defensively on Saturday, possibly committing a lot of fouls on Lionel Messi. This is likely to frustrate his teammates, who might get into fight with the Mexicans. As a result, we’ll probably see a lot of yellow cards on both ends.

When it comes to their attacking plan, Mexico will almost certainly rely on counterattacks and set pieces. They got Napoli’s Hirving Lozano and Club America’s Henry Martin on the flanks, both of whom are quick and great when it comes to dribbling the ball.

Further, Mexico also has Raul Jimenez in the squad. The Wolves striker came on the pitch in the second half against Poland, but we might see him start the Argentina game. If he does, the Argentinians are in trouble as he’s great in the air.

He’s two inches taller than Nicolas Otamendi and six inches taller than Lisandro Martinez – the two center-backs who are expected to start for Argentina on Saturday.

Argentina vs Mexico Prediction
If you love soccer drama, you need to watch this match. We expect to see some great goals, some vintage saves, and plenty of violence. Argentina should win in the end, but we can’t say we trust them 100%. Instead, we’re more certain this game will see goals on both ends.

World Cup Preview: Spain vs Germany

Spain vs Germany is arguably the most exciting matchup of Round 2 of the 2022 World Cup. It’s because Die Mannschaft are in desperate need of points after suffering a humiliating loss to Japan in the first round. Winning points against Spain won’t be easy as La Furia Roja is playing top-level soccer as evident from the fact that they obliterated Costa Rica 7-0 in Round 1.

Record-Breaking Spain Ready for Next Challenge
On Wednesday, Spain beat Costa Rica 7-0, which was their biggest victory at the World Cup in history. They absolutely dominated the game from the very start, keeping the ball in their possession 82% of the time. They made 17 goal attempts, while stopping Costa Rica players from creating any goal attempts.

The Red Fury were impeccable against Costa Rica, but can they do something similar against motivated Germany? It’s very unlikely they’re going to be able to dominate that game as Germans are great in the midfield.

But what about Spain’s defense? Should they fear German attacks? No one can say for certain because Germany looked horrible in the offense against Japan.

Germany’s Offense Needs to Improve
Germany was the dominant force against Japan, keeping the ball in their possession for 74% of the game and making 25 goal attempts. Unfortunately for them, only one went in – Ilkay Gundogan score the only goal for Germany from the penalty spot.

Hansi Flick will have to make some changes in the final third to make sure his team does better offensively. We might see Niklas Fullkrug start the game or Thomas Muller move to the striker position.

Flick will also have to make some changes in the backline. Niklas Sule will probably be dropped in favor of Thilo Kehrer on the right side. Kehrer is just way quicker than his 6’5 220-pound colleague.

There’s one section of the German team that doesn’t require any adjustments – midfield. That’s Germany’s strongest point, which will probably play a key role on Sunday. If Kimmich & Co. establish dominance in the center of the pitch, Die Mannschaft will stand a chance against in-form Spain.

Spain vs Germany Prediction
Luis Enrique started two teenagers in the midfield three – Gavi (18) and Pedri (19). They did a fine job against Costa Rica, which is why they’re expected to start against Germany as well. However, we doubt they’re going to put the same level of performance once again.

Germany’s midfield players are going to run them over, keeping the ball in their possession throughout the game. The Germans are also going to create more scoring opportunities than Spain, but the question is how many of those will they turn into goals. Not too much is our answer, but we do think they’re gonna score at least once.

LAST DALLAS STARS GAME
Nov. 23, 2022 – STARS 6 vs. BLACKHAWKS 4
The Stars capped off one of the wildest comebacks in recent years with five unanswered goals in the third period to defeat the Chicago Blackhawks 6-4 at American Airlines Center on Wednesday night. In front of a sellout crowd of 18,532, the Stars erased a three-goal deficit with under 10 minutes remaining in regulation on goals from captain Jamie Benn (1-1—2) and forwards Mason Marchment (1-0—1), Ty Dellandrea (1-0—1) and the eventual game winner from Radek Faksa (1-0—1) to give the club its 12th victory of the season (12-5-3, 27 points) and a four-point cushion atop the Central Division. Forward Jason Robertson (2-0—2) pushed his point streak to 13 consecutive games (14-10—24), placing him in a tie for the longest streak in Dallas Stars history (1993-present) and the third longest in franchise history (1967-present). His second goal on the night put the game on ice in the closing seconds of the third period to give the Stars a 6-4 lead. In all, 12 players recorded at least one point in the win, including a multi-assist performance (0-2—2) from defenseman Jani Hakanpaa, whose point shot deflected off Dellandrea’s stick to even the score, 4-4, just 14 seconds after Marchment’s tally. The Stars have won four in a row (4-0-0) against the Blackhawks, including the past two consecutive contests at American Airlines Center. Goaltender Jake Oettinger improved to 5-1-2 in nine career appearances against the Blackhawks. His 27- save effort boosted his record this season to 8-2-2 in 14 games.

TONIGHT’S GAME: The Stars close out a four-game homestand against the Winnipeg Jets at American Airlines Center. (7:30 p.m. CT, TV: Bally Sports Southwest, Radio: The Ticket 96.7-FM/1310-AM). This opens Dallas’ second set of back to backs, as the club will face the Colorado Avalanche tomorrow at Ball Arena in Denver. Tonight’s contest against Winnipeg wraps up the three-game season series between the Stars and Jets, which has seen each club win on home ice.

WE NEVER GREW OUT OF THIS FEELING THAT WE WON’T GIVE UP

  • The Stars’ comeback victory over Chicago on Wednesday marked the second time in franchise history (1967-present) the club won a game in regulation after overcoming a three-goal, third-period deficit. The only other such instance was Nov. 29, 1983 vs. Pittsburgh (6-4 W).
  • This was, however, the first time in franchise history that the club won a game in regulation after overcoming a three-goal, third-period deficit with under 10 minutes remaining in regulation.
  • Dallas erased a 4-1 deficit on goals from Jamie Benn, Mason Marchment and Ty Dellandrea in a span of 3:57. Radek Faksa’s goahead tally (and eventual game winner) came just 4:15 later.
  • Prior to Wednesday’s game, the Stars/North Stars had overcome a 3+ goal deficit in the final 10 minutes of regulation and won in three different instances, all in overtime or a shootout: March 30, 2007 at Detroit (max deficit: 3; won 4-3 in a shootout), Oct. 21, 1993 at Ottawa (max deficit: 4; won 6-5 in OT) and Nov. 26, 1983 at Toronto (max deficit: 3; won 7-6 in OT).
  • The Stars became the first team to earn a third-goal, third-period comeback win this season.

HAVE A SEAT, COME RIDE WITH ME

  • The Stars and Jets have split the first two games of the season series, with both clubs winning on home ice. Dallas earned a 4-1 victory on Oct. 17 and Winnipeg won 5-1 on Nov. 8.
  • The Stars have points in six of their past seven games (5-1-1) against Winnipeg and have points in 10 of their previous 12 games (8-2-2) against them.
  • Dallas also comes into Friday’s tilt riding a seven-game home winning streak (7-0-0) against the Jets.
  • Jason Robertson is averaging better than a point per game against the Jets in his career (6-1—7 in 6 GP). Robertson tallied the lone goal in Dallas’ most recent game against Winnipeg, a 5-1 loss Nov. 8 at Canada Life Centre.
  • Robertson recorded his first career NHL hat trick against the Jets on March 4 to become the fourth player in Stars/North Stars history (1967-present) to cap a regular-season hat trick with an overtime goal and the first to do so since the club relocated to Dallas.
  • Forward Tyler Seguin leads active Stars and ranks sixth among active NHL skaters in career scoring against Winnipeg with 51 points (28-23—51) in 45 games, including 24 points (14-10—24) in 23 home games.
  • Seguin has points in five of his past six games (4-4—8) overall against the Jets and has points in eight consecutive home games (8-7—15) against them dating back to Feb. 24, 2018.
  • The 30-year-old has played more games vs. Winnipeg than any other opponent and has the most goals (28) against any team he’s faced.
  • Among active NHL skaters, Seguin shares third in goals (28), shares 11th in assists (23) and second in power-play tallies (13) and power-play points (26) against the Jets.
  • Captain Jamie Benn ranks second on the club with 40 points (18-22—40) in 40 career contests vs. Winnipeg.
  • Benn also ranks second among active Stars in power-play goals (8), power-play points (20) and shots on goal (121).
  • Benn has goals in four of his past seven games against Winnipeg (4-4—8) and has logged points (5-4—9) in six of the previous nine games against them.
  • Goaltender Jake Oettinger turned aside 24 of 25 shots in a 4-1 victory vs. Winnipeg in the series opener on Oct. 17 to improve his career mark against the Jets to 4-1-2 in eight appearances (2.40 goals-against average, .918 save percentage and one shutout).

2022-23 REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE
Oct. 17: Jets 1 vs. Stars 4 (American Airlines Center)
Nov. 8: Stars 1 vs. Jets 5 (Canada Life Centre)
Nov. 25 vs. Winnipeg

I THINK I’M ON THE EDGE OF SOMETHING NEW WITH YOU

  • With his first of two goals (2-0—2) against the Blackhawks on Nov. 23, forward Jason Robertson’s point streak reached 13 consecutive games, placing him in a tie for the longest streak in Dallas Stars history (1993-present) and the third longest in franchise history (1967-present).
  • There have been only seven point streaks (including Robertson) in franchise history of 13+ games, including only one since the club relocated to Dallas (Dave Gagner: 13 GP in 1993-94).
  • Robertson (23 years, 124 days) became the third Stars/North Stars player age of 23 or younger to have a streak of as many contests. The others: Brian Bellows (20 GP in 1985-86) and Steve Payne (13 GP in 1979-80).

Below is a list of point streaks of at least 13 games in franchise history (1967-present):
RANK PLAYER TEAM SEASON START DATE END DATE POINT STREAK G A P
1 Brian Bellows MNS 1985-1986 1/11/1986 2/21/1986 20 11 18 29

7 Dave Gagner DAL 1993-94 11/21/1993 12/19/1993 13 7 9 16

  • Robertson finds himself in rare company with 16 goals through the first 20 games of the 2022-23 campaign. Not only did he tie Mike Modano (16 in 1993-94) for the most goals through the first 20 games of a season in Dallas Stars history, but it also placed him in a tie for the second-most goals over that span in franchise history (Dino Ciccarelli had 24 in 1986-87).

It’s also the third most in franchise history through as many team games in a campaign, trailing only Dino Ciccarelli (39 in 1986-87) and Bobby Smith (35 in 1981-82).

  • He also shares second in the league in game-winning goals (3), ranks third in even-strength points (21), shares fourth in points per game (1.55) and is tied for 13th overall in plus-minus (+13).
  • Robertson holds the second longest point streak in the NHL this season, behind only Mitchell Marner’s active 14-game run.
  • Finally, Robertson leads the league with 21 points (12-9—21) in the month of November (11 GP).

Robertson followed Neal Broten from Jan. 23-Feb. 4, 1982 (7-12—19 in 7 GP), Jamie Benn from March 1-11, 2011 (6-1—7 in 6 GP), Mike Modano from Feb. 29-March 10, 1992 (7-2—9 in 6 GP) and Danny Grant from Oct. 16-29, 1969 (6-1—7 in 6 GP).
  • Robertson was named the NHL’s First Star of the Week for the week ending Nov. 6 after registering eight points (4-4—8) and scoring in all three of his outings to push his goal streak to a career-high five games (dating to Oct. 27: 6-5—11).
