MOST OVERTIME GOALS SINCE 2015-16 Connor McDavid – 14 Jonathan Toews – 13 Brad Marchand – 13 Sidney Crosby – 12
500 AND COUNTING Following his 500th career game on Nov. 7 at WSH, Connor McDavid finished ranked 6th all-time in NHL scoring (724 PTS) in your first 500 games. McDavid became the 9th player in Oilers franchise history to score a goal in his 500th NHL game, joining the likes of Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier and Leon Draisaitl.
200 CLUB Ryan Nugent-Hopkins scored his 200th career goal with the Oilers on Oct. 26 at STL which stood as the game winning goal. Nugent-Hopkins becomes just the ninth player in Oilers history to record 200 goals with the Oilers and has achieved the mark in 726 games all with the Oilers.
SHOOTING GALLERY The Oilers posted a franchise high 26 shots on goal in one period on October 24th vs. PIT. The previous record of 24 shots was done three times and most recently against Calgary on Feb. 1/20. Evander Kane also posted a team high nine shots against the Penguins and tied an Oilers record for most shots in a period by a player, recording eight shots in the second period. Taylor Hall co-holds the record, posting eight shots previously on Feb. 19/11 vs. ATL). Kane holds the league record of 10 shots in a period by a player, which he recorded on Nov. 1/18 against Columbus as a member of the San Jose Sharks.
McDAVID HITS 700-POINT MARK WITH SEASON-OPENING HAT TRICK With Edmonton trailing 3-0 midway through the second period, Oilers captain Connor McDavid factored on four of his club’s five consecutive goals, capping off the night with the NHL’s first hat trick of the 2022-23 season. McDavid (3-1—4) boosted his career totals to 242-459—701 (488 GP) and became the fastest active player to reach the 700-point milestone.
The three-goal performance marked the second season-opening hat trick of McDavid’s career (also Oct. 4, 2017) as he became the third player in NHL history to record multiple hat tricks in season openers alongside Brendan Shanahan (2) and Cam Neely (2).
The Oilers overcame a three-goal deficit to win a season-opening game for the first time in franchise history. Edmonton became just the ninth club in NHL history to do so and the first since Anaheim on Oct. 5, 2017. Coincidentally, the Ducks overcame a 3-1 deficit Wednesday night to record their second-ever multi-goal comeback win in a season opener.

Today is the Blueshirts’ fifth-straight game against a Pacific Division opponent. Against the Western Conference this season, the Rangers are 7-3-3 and 3-1-2 against teams in the Pacific Division.
The Blueshirts will play their second “afternoon” game of the season today (note: any game starting before 5 p.m. local is considered an “afternoon” or “matinee” game). In the first one, New York beat Dallas, 6-3, on October 29. Last year, the club went 7-2-0 in matinee contests.
When scoring first this season, the Rangers are 8-1-1.
At home against the Oilers, the Blueshirts have won four of their last six games, including a 4-1 win on Jan. 3, 2022.
New York ranks third in the NHL with 630 hits. Mika Zibanejad, Artemi Panarin and Adam Fox each have 23 points on the season. The Rangers are one of two teams (DAL) in the NHL with three or more players with 23 or more points.
The Rangers have been tied after two periods 11 times this season and carry a 6-1-4 record in those games. Their six such wins are the most in the NHL.

Jazz look to end another skid in showdown with Suns
The Utah Jazz snapped a three-game losing streak eight days ago when they edged the Suns in Salt Lake City.
The Jazz, losers of six of their past eight games, will hope for the same positive result Saturday night in Phoenix as they find themselves in the midst of another three-game streak.
This much is true: Utah will need to shoot a lot better to beat the Suns than it did while losing at Golden State 129-118 on Friday night, following losses to Detroit and the Los Angeles Clippers. Against the Warriors, the Jazz only made 11 of 45 3-pointers.
Golden State jumped to a 37-23 lead in the first quarter, but the Jazz overcame the early deficit. Sustaining that momentum proved too difficult, however. Utah briefly took a one-point lead in the third quarter, but Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson and company made the visitors pay for their off-night from 3-point range.
Against the Suns in last week’s win, Lauri Markkanen made 15 of 18 shots for a career-high 38 points, and the Jazz shot 56 percent from the field overall and made 16 of 31 from long distance.
Devin Booker had a huge outing against Utah — 49 points — in the 134-133 Jazz win on Nov. 18, and the Suns shot 52.1 percent from the field despite a 9-of-30 effort from 3-point range.
Phoenix beat Detroit 108-102 on Friday night despite shooting 24.1 percent beyond the arc. The Suns shot 48.3 percent overall, with Deandre Ayton leading the way by hitting 11 of 13 shots en route to 28 points.
Ayton also grabbed 12 rebounds and blocked two shots. He had a key putback bucket with 1:34 remaining vs. the Pistons to increase Phoenix’s lead to five.
Both teams will be without their veteran starting point guard. Chris Paul has been out seven games with a sore right heel, while the Jazz have struggled with Mike Conley (knee) sidelined during their latest losing streak.
Phoenix has replaced Utah atop the Western Conference standings since the two teams last met.
The Los Angeles Lakers will look to sweep a two-games-in-two-nights series against the reeling San Antonio Spurs when the teams square off Saturday night in the Alamo City.
It will be the third game between the teams over a seven-day stretch, with Los Angeles capturing the first two.
The Lakers, buoyed by the continued dominating play of Anthony Davis and the return of LeBron James, did enough to beat San Antonio 105-94 on Friday in the first game of the two-game set. It was the Lakers’ first road win of the year after six losses.
Davis had 25 points and 15 rebounds in Friday’s win, scoring 11 points in the fourth quarter after the Spurs clawed their way back into the game with a rousing third period. James was a force after being out with an adductor strain since Nov. 9, scoring 21 points. He also had nine of the Lakers’ 21 turnovers.
An 8-2 run over a three-minute stretch of the third quarter capped by a three-point play by Keldon Johnson allowed the Spurs to pull to 70-58, and Jakob Poeltl’s jumper at the 4:08 mark got them within 10 points. That spurt was a precursor to another that San Antonio forged over the rest of the period to draw to 79-75 heading into the final quarter.
Davis and James then combined for seven consecutive points early in the fourth during an 11-0 run to push the Lakers’ advantage to 12 points, and San Antonio never seriously challenged again.
Walker added 18 points in his return to San Antonio after signing with the Lakers as a free agent in the offseason. Troy Brown Jr. had 10 for Los Angeles, which has won four of its past five games. The Lakers were without Patrick Beverley, who sat out the first game of a three-game suspension for a shoving incident against Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton in the fourth quarter on Tuesday night.
San Antonio dropped its seventh straight game and 12 of its 13 contests in November.
Tre Jones led the Spurs with 19 points, with Devin Vassell scoring 18, Johnson 15, Jeremy Sochan 13 and Jakob Poeltl 10. San Antonio was missing key bench players Doug McDermott and Josh Richardson, both of whom had ankle injuries.
The Spurs trailed 33-21 at the end of the first quarter.
It takes more than a quarter of good play to beat the Lakers, especially with James back in the fold.
Houston coach Stephen Silas has spoken often about the need for the Rockets to be rewarded for their effort, to glean something tangible from spirited showings beyond another close defeat.
The Rockets finally secured a much-needed victory on Friday, outlasting the visiting Atlanta Hawks 128-122 by surrendering only 18 points in the fourth quarter while producing a plus-31 rebounding margin — including 22 offensive boards that yielded 37 second-chance points.
After surveying the celebratory mood in the locker room following a win that snapped a four-game homecourt losing skid, Silas recognized that the moment was short-lived at best.
The Rockets will host the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday in the second game of a back-to-back for both. The Thunder topped the Chicago Bulls 123-119 in overtime on Friday.
Beyond their overwhelming performance on the glass, the Rockets outflanked Atlanta with a collective offensive effort. Second-year guard Jalen Green was dynamic, posting 30 points, five rebounds and five assists before fouling out late in the fourth quarter, but he had ample help.
The Rockets, who were without starters Eric Gordon and Alperen Sengun, got 21 points apiece from KJ Martin and rookie Jabari Smith Jr., with Martin adding 15 rebounds and Smith nine. Kevin Porter Jr. chipped in a double-double of 12 points and 10 assists with seven rebounds while Garrison Mathews made the most of his rare playing time with 20 points off the bench.
Houston assisted on 25 of its 41 field goals while Green and Smith took 17 shots each and Porter hoisted 16. Martin finished 10 of 13 from the floor to underscore the egalitarian display.
The Thunder snapped a three-game skid with the win over the Bulls, one that featured another standout showing from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander: 30 points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
Outscored 47-29 over the final 17 minutes in an overtime loss to the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday, the Thunder took something positive from that collapse and applied it against the Bulls. Oklahoma City coughed up a double-digit lead, but this time recovered to finish.
Gilgeous-Alexander credited the “15-man roster” for carrying the Thunder through the finish line, one that included four starters scoring in double figures, Josh Giddey posting 10 points, 13 rebounds and nine assists, plus an additional 48 bench points, including 17 from Darius Bazley.
Thaddeus Young should have another chance to show his value to the depleted Toronto Raptors on Saturday against the visiting Dallas Mavericks.
The Raptors will be facing a Mavericks team motivated to make up for a 125-112 loss to the Boston Celtics in the opener of a three-game road trip on Wednesday despite 42 points from Luka Doncic.
Both teams have lost two straight.
With the Raptors dealing with injuries to players like Pascal Siakam (adductor strain), the 34-year-old Young has gone from providing experience off the bench to putting in significant minutes.
Toronto was down to 10 available players in a 112-98 home loss to the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday, and Young played 28 minutes a starter and delivered 12 points, eight rebounds, five assists and two steals.
In an overtime loss to the host Atlanta Hawks on Nov. 19, he recorded season-best 18 points with nine rebounds, four assists and four steals in 35 minutes.
Young’s first start as a Raptor was Nov. 12 when he registered 15 points and three steals against the host Indiana Pacers.
Siakam, injured in the loss at Dallas on Nov. 4, is not yet ready to return. Others out on Wednesday were Scottie Barnes (knee), Fred VanVleet (illness), Dalano Banton (ankle), Precious Achiuwa (ankle) and Otto Porter Jr. (dislocated toe).
Based on how well he worked with Doncic on Wednesday, Christian Wood could be making his first start of the season on Saturday.
The two worked together to cut a 17-point deficit to nine with three minutes to play at Boston.
One game after playing a season-low 17 minutes in a home loss to the Denver Nuggets, Wood played a season-high 34 against Boston and had 26 points and 12 rebounds.
Kidd has said that he prefers Wood and Tim Hardaway Jr. coming off the bench.
Wood, an offseason acquisition, prefers not to comment on the situation.
* The Bruins watched an NHL record fall following their matinee clash with the Hurricanes and became the first team in League history to win each of their first 12 home games of a season.
* Josh Morrissey and Jason Robertson each continued their strings of success to start 2022-23 as the Jets and Stars required overtime to decide a winner between the Central Division’s top two clubs.
* The Kraken find themselves within the NHL’s top four in points percentage following a fourth straight win and improving to 8-1-1 in their past 10 contests.
* Another full day of NHL action is ahead as the League celebrates the 105th anniversary of its founding in 1917.
BRUINS SET NHL RECORD WITH 12-0-0 START AT HOME Facing a 2-0 defict on home ice for the first time since February, the Bruins scored three unanswered goals – two by David Krejci and an overtime tally from David Pastrnak – to become the first team in NHL history to start a season with 12 straight wins at home.
* This marks the seventh time the Bruins have won at least 12 straight home contests within a regular season, but their current streak dates back further than the start of the 2022-23 campaign. Boston has left TD Garden with a “W” in each game since April 16, including three playoff victories (all vs. CAR), to mark the sixth instance in NHL history of a team winning 19 or more consecutive home games at any point.
* Krejci (127-274—401 in 493 GP) joined Patrice Bergeron (218-321—539 in 622 GP) and Brad Marchand (182-233—415 in 441 GP) as the third player to record 400 career points at TD Garden. It was the 118th regular-season game in that building in which Krejci, Bergeron, Marchand and Pastrnak all registered a point, with Boston improving to 100-11-7 in those contests.
* ICYMI: adidas and the NHL unveiled the special-edition jerseys the Bruins and Penguins will wear during the 2023 Discover NHL Winter Classic on Jan. 2. The jerseys go on sale Dec. 1.
JETS OUTLAST STARS IN BATTLE OF TOP CLUBS IN CENTRAL The Stars tied the game twice in the first period and Jason Robertson (2-1—3) scored twice in the final 2:12 of regulation to help Dallas erase a multi-goal deficit, but Josh Morrissey found the back of the net 34 seconds into overtime to lift the second-place Jets past the top team in the Central Division.
* Morrissey (4-16—20 in 19 GP) is one of three defensemen to lead their team in points this season, joining Erik Karlsson (11-19—30) and Adam Fox (6-17—23; tied). The Jets blueliner has only been held without a point four times so far, trailing only Quinn Hughes (3 GP) for the fewest among all defensemen in 2022-23.
* Hockey Fights Cancer Month holds a special meaning for Morrissey after his father, Tom, passed away in August 2021. Winnipeg hosts its Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night on Nov. 29 and during its 2021 celebration, Morrissey auctioned off the suit he had tailored for the game to pay homage to his dad who worked in the financial world and always wore suits.
* Robertson’s third straight multi-goal outing boosted his 2022-23 totals to 18-16—34 and overtook Connor McDavid (16 in 20 GP) and Bo Horvat (16 in 20 GP) for the most goals among all players. His rise up the NHL leaderboard includes a 14-game point streak – the longest by any skater in Stars team history and one back of Mitchell Marner (15 GP w/ TOR; active) for the longest of the season.
* Robertson is the fourth player in franchise history to sit atop the NHL in goals through the first quarter of a season following Jamie Benn (14 in 21 GP; 2015-16), Tyler Seguin (15 in 21 GP; 2014-15) and Dino Ciccarelli (tied w/ 20 in 18 GP; 1986-87).
* Robertson has now also recorded the second-most points among all skaters this season and has done so thanks in part to a 24-point month of November (14-10—24). With two scheduled contests before Dec. 1, Robertson sits one shy of becoming the third player in Stars/North Stars history with 25-plus points in a single month; Tom McCarthy (12-15—27 in Nov. 1983) and Neal Broten (5-20—25 in Jan. 1984 & 10-15—25 in Feb. 1982) are the only ones to do so.
KRAKEN CONTINUE TO COLLECT THE POINTS IN SECOND SEASON Andre Burakovsky (2-0—2) scored twice, including his first game-winning goal in a Kraken uniform, as Seattle improved to 12-5-3 (27 points) in 2022-23 – six more wins than they had through their first 20 games in 2021-22 (6-13-1, 13 points).
* Burakovsky (7-13—20), who joined the Kraken from the defending Stanley Cup-champion Avalanche, leads the team in points and goals (tied), and is one of 10 Seattle skaters with a double-digit point total – tied for the most among all teams in 2022-23 (also BOS, FLA, LAK & VGK w/ 10). In 2021-22, only six Kraken players had 10 or more points and none reached the 20-point mark.
HRONEK EXTENDS HOT STRETCH, HELPS RED WINGS CAPTURE FOURTH STRAIGHT WIN Filip Hronek (1-1—2) extended his goal streak to four games and captain Dylan Larkin scored the decisive marker in the shootout to lift Detroit (11-5-4, 26 points) to its fourth straight victory. Hronek joined Rasmus Dahlin (5 GP from Oct. 13-22) and Erik Karlsson (4 GP from Oct. 27 – Nov. 3) as the third defenseman with a four-game goal streak in 2022-23.
* Hronek now has 6-12—18 in 20 games this season – the second-most assists (tied) and third-most points among all Red Wings skaters. Only three Detroit defensemen in nearly 40 years (since 1984-85) have had as many points through their first 20 contests of a campaign: Paul Coffey (3-21—24 in 1994-95), Nicklas Lidstrom (3-17—20 in 2010-11; 3-16—19 in 2007-08 & 1995-96) and Larry Murphy (3-16—19 in 1998-99).
NYLANDER, MARNER LIFT MAPLE LEAFS TO VICTORY IN MINNESOTA William Nylander and Mitchell Marner, who extended his point streak, both found the back of the net Friday as the Maple Leafs earned a victory at Xcel Energy Center. While wearing a special patch to honor the late Börje Salming, Nylander tied Darcy Tucker and the Maple Leafs legend for 30th place on the franchise‘s all-time goals list; he also tied Salming for the second-most goals by a Swedish Maple Leafs player. Nylander dedicated his game winner to his fellow countryman following the contest.
THE NHL WAS FOUNDED ON THIS DATE IN 1917 A full day of hockey awaits on the 105th anniversary of the NHL’s founding, with a quadruple header on Sportsnet ready to mark the occasion.
* The NHL was founded on Nov. 26, 1917, at the Windsor Hotel in Montreal, following three days of meetings involving owners from the National Hockey Association – which had suspended operations weeks earlier. As noted in the meeting minutes, the owners decided “that the Canadiens, Wanderers, Ottawa and Quebec Hockey Clubs unite to comprise the National Hockey League.”
* Quebec’s entry into the NHL was delayed until 1919-20, but Toronto was granted a franchise and the League began with four clubs – the Montreal Canadiens, Montreal Wanderers, Ottawa Senators and Toronto Arenas. The League’s first contests were played on Dec. 19, 1917. Learn more in an article published in 2017 in celebration of the League’s 100th anniversary.
OVECHKIN CAN CATCH GRETZKY ATOP AN ALL-TIME GOALS LIST TONIGHT
Alex Ovechkin (11-10—21 in 22 GP) and the Capitals will open a six-game road trip when they visit the first-place Metropolitan Devils at Prudential Center, one day after he celebrated goal No. 791 in front of his son. It also marked his 147th career power-play tally at home, which moved him within one of Teemu Selanne (148) for third most in NHL history – an #NHLStats Pack detailing his road to 800, which was published after Ovechkin scored his 790th, can be found here.
* Ovechkin enters the contest with 401 career regular-season road goals, one back of Wayne Gretzky (402) for the most in NHL history. Of course, it isn’t the only all-time goals list Ovechkin is trying to catch Gretzky in – he now sits 103 tallies shy of matching The Great One for top spot on the NHL’s all-time goals list and nine from joining him and Gordie Howe (801) in the 800-goal club.
* The Capitals captainhas scored in 38 different buildings as a visitor, including 13 goals at Prudential Center (28 GP). Six players have scored a road goal in 50-plus different venues: Jaromir Jagr (55), Brendan Shanahan (52), Selanne (51), Steve Yzerman (51), Mark Recchi (50) and Brett Hull (50).
* Ovechkin has had nearly an even split in home/road goals throughout his career, with 50.6% of his total goals coming on the road (401 of 791). Among players with at least 100 career NHL goals, Martin Rucinsky (142 of 241; 58.9%) scored the highest percentage of his career goals on the road.
* Ovechkin has scored 14 regular-season hat tricks on the road, tied with Mike Bossy (14) for the fourth most in NHL history behind Gretzky (19), Mario Lemieux (19) and Marcel Dionne (17). Ovechkin’s only multi-goal effort at Prudential Center was Nov. 15, 2008, when he potted two against Scott Clemmensen, including the latest tying goal on the road in franchise history (19:59 of P3; a feat since matched).
* Did You Know? Two players in NHL history scored 10 career regular-season goals on the road before potting their first on home ice: Murray Wilson (first home goal: Feb. 7, 1973) and Wally Kilrea (first home goal: March 12, 1931).
* Ten players in NHL history have scored five or more goals in their career without ever scoring a goal on home ice. Dalton Prout, Fredrik Claesson and Milan Marcetta lead the way with seven career goals, all of which came on the road. Other notables among the 10 include current Canes defenseman Dylan Coghlan (6; all on the road) and Blue Jackets general manager Jarmo Kekalainen (5; all on the road).
