DALLAS STARS NOTES:

LAST DALLAS STARS GAME
Dec. 4, 2022 – STARS 5 vs. WILD 6 (shootout)
Down 5-1 in the opening minute of the third period, the Stars staged an incredible comeback by scoring four unanswered goals to earn them a point in an eventual 6-4 shootout defeat against the Minnesota Wild at American Airlines Center on Sunday. The Stars became the second team in as many seasons to overcome a four-goal, third-period deficit to at least tie the game. The Florida Panthers, who eventually won the game, did so against the New Jersey Devils on April 2, 2022. Led by a three-goal four-point effort from Roope Hintz (3-1—4), a three-assist performance from Joe Pavelski (0-3—3) and two-point nights from Jason Robertson (1-1—2) and Mason Marchment (1-1—2), the Stars have earned at least one point in the standings in 10 of their past 11 games (6-1-4). Hintz’ hat trick was the second three-goal game of his career, while his four points matched a personal best first established on April 8, 2021 at Chicago (1-3—4). Pavelski assisted on three of Dallas’ four third-period goals to match the franchise record for most in a single period – a feat last achieved by Tyler Seguin on April 2, 2022 (0-3—3 in the first period). Robertson, meanwhile, extended his point streak to 18 consecutive games, which is two games shy of the franchise mark of 20 set by Brian Bellows from Jan. 11-Feb. 21, 1986 with the Minnesota North Stars. Goaltender Jake Oettinger made his 16th start and stopped 12 of 16 shots in 39:50 TOT. Scott Wedgewood came on in relief and turned aside 14 of 15 in the shootout defeat.

2022-23 REGULAR SEASON SCHEDULE
Oct. 20: Maple Leafs 3 vs. Stars 2 (OT) at Scotiabank Arena
Dec. 6 vs. Toronto

NEW MONTH, NEW ACCOLADE

  • Forward Jason Robertson was named the NHL’s Third Star of the Week for the week ending Dec. 4 after sharing the league lead with five goals in three outings (5-1—6) to power the Stars (14-6-5, 33 points) to a 2-0-1 week.
  • He scored once in a 4-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Nov. 28, followed by his third career hat trick – including the game-winning goal – in a 5-0 triumph against the Anaheim Ducks on Dec. 1. Robertson closed the week with two points (1-1—2), as well as a shootout tally, as Dallas erased a four-goal third-period deficit in an eventual 6-5 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Dec. 4.
  • It’s the third time this season Robertson has been named an NHL Star of the Week, and it comes just a week after the 23-year-old was named the league’s First Star for the month of November. (More on that below).

BRIGHTEST STAR FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER

  • Robertson was named the NHL’s First Star for the month of November after leading the league with 15 goals and 26 points in 14 games (15-11—26) to power the Central Division-leading Stars to an 8-3-3 November.
  • Robertson, who became the first player in franchise history to top the league in both goals and points during a calendar month, found the scoresheet in each of his 14 November appearances to extend his point streak to 16 contests (now 18 as of Dec. 6) dating to Oct. 27 (17-12—29)

– the second-longest such stretch in franchise history (1967-present) behind Brian Bellows’ 20-game run from Jan. 11–Feb. 21, 1986 (11-18—29).

  • Robertson’s November goal and point totals also ranked second for a single month in franchise history, behind Dino Ciccarelli’s 16 tallies in March 1986 (14 GP) and Tom McCarthy’s 27 points in November 1983 (12-15—27 in 13 GP).
  • Overall, Robertson recorded multiple points in nine of his 14 outings and a quartet of multi-goal performances, highlighted by three straight such games from Nov. 21-25 (6-1—7).
*Robertson’s point streak is currently at 18 games. (More on that below).

YOU’VE GOT THIS SILLY WAY OF KEEPING ME ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT

  • Robertson extended his career-best point streak to 18 consecutive games with a multi-point (1-1—2) performance on Dec. 4 vs. Minnesota.
  • Robertson has 21 goals and 34 points (21-13—34) over that span, which is the second-longest point streak in franchise history (1967-present). Only Brian Bellows’ 20-game point streak from Jan. 11-Feb. 21, 1986 with the Minnesota North Stars is longer.
  • Only two active players have recorded a longer point streak age 23 or younger: Paul Stastny (20 GP in 2006-07), Sidney Crosby (19 GP 2007-08 & 16 GP in 2008-09).
  • Robertson holds the second longest point streak in the NHL this season, behind only Mitchell Marner’s active 19-game run.
  • He has goals in 15 of his 18 games on his current point streak and has 12 multi-point efforts over that span, including three consecutive multi-goal performances (Nov. 21 vs. Colorado, Nov. 23 vs. Chicago and Nov. 25 vs. Winnipeg).

  • Robertson has been named the NHL’s First Star of the Week twice already this season for the weeks ending Nov. 27 and Nov. 6.

  • With two goals on his 26th birthday on Nov. 17 at Florida, Hintz became just the second player in franchise history (1967-present) to score multiple goals on his birthday (also Dave Gagner, Dec. 11, 1990).
  • Hintz is one of four players on the Stars to have a shorthanded goal this season (also Radek Faksa, Luke Glendening and Joel Kiviranta).
  • Hintz and Robertson became the third pair of Stars/North Stars teammates with simultaneous 10-game point streaks, joining Brian Bellows and Neal Broten (10 GP from Jan. 23-Feb. 13, 1986) as well as Steve Payne and Bobby Smith (10 GP from Feb. 10-28, 1980).
  • On Nov. 29 the Stars signed forward Hintz to an eight-year contract extension, which begins in the 2023-24 season and runs through the 2030-31 campaign. The eight-year contract extension is worth $67.6 million and has an average annual value (AAV) of $8.45 million.

THERE’S JUST A FEW THINGS I THINK THAT YOU SHOULD KNOW

  • Forward Joe Pavelski (0-3—3) assisted on three of Dallas’ four third-period goals on Sunday vs. Minnesota to match the franchise record for most in a single period – a feat last achieved by Tyler Seguin on April 2, 2022 (0-3—3 in the first period).

  • He passed Chris Chelios (948) for 12th all-time in points among U.S.-born skaters with an assist against the Ducks on Dec. 1.
  • With his 157th career power-play goal scored on Nov. 26 at Colorado, Pavelski tied Mike Modano for the fourth most by a U.S.-born player. (Jeremy Roenick is third all-time with 184 PPG). It marked Pavelski’s 10th goal of the season and the 431st of his NHL career.
  • With 431 career NHL goals, Pavelski needs two more to tie Patrick Kane (434) for seventh all-time in goals among U.S.-born skaters. Kane is also the only active U.S.-born skater to have more goals than Pavelski.
  • Pavelski has eight multi-point games on the season and 44 since joining the Stars in 2019-20.
  • Only two Stars have notched more multi-point games for the franchise than Pavelski over that span: Jason Robertson (50) and Roope Hintz (48).

‘CAUSE I’M A WISHFUL THINKER WITH THE BEST INTENTIONS

STORYLINES
SOGs
The Islanders have recorded 40 or more shots on goal in two straight games for the first time since March 2018. They registered 40 shots on goal in their 3-0 victory vs. the Blackhawks on Sunday night. Friday night vs. Nashville, the Islanders registered 49 shots on goal in their 4-1 loss. It is the most they have recorded in a single game since March 11, 2020, in Vancouver, a game that went to the shootout. In regulation, the Islanders have not recorded that many shots on goal since October 25, 2008. Nine of the Islanders’ season-high 49 shots on goal were taken by Mathew Barzal, who matched a career-high. Entering tonight’s game, defenseman Noah Dobson leads the team in shots on goal and is tied for fifth amongst NHL defensemen with 80 (Trouba). Brock Nelson is second on the Islanders, with 78.

29

Islanders forward Brock Nelson scored his 12th goal of the season on Sunday night, to help the Islanders defeat the Blackhawks at home. Nelson leads the Islanders with 12 goals so far this season. He has scored points in his last five straight games, the second Islander to record a point streak of five or more games this season (Barzal, 7). Nelson also leads the Islanders with four game-winning goals this season, one of just five NHLers to record four GWGs this season (L. Draisaitl, J. Robertson, A. Tuch, T. Hall). Since his first goal of the season on October 28, the Islanders are 10-0-0 when Nelson scores a goal.

18

Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier tallied an assist in Sunday night’s game vs. Chicago, his 200th career NHL point. He is the 15th player from his 2015 NHL Draft class to reach the milestone, including teammate Mathew Barzal. Beauvillier is one of nine Islanders with 200 or more career points. He enters tonight’s game one goal away from his career 100th.

VARLAMOV
Islanders netminder Semyon Varlamov tallied his sixth win of the season on Sunday and his 12th shutout as an Islander when he turned away all 21 shots he faced vs. Chicago. It was his first shutout since April 1 (at NY Rangers) and the 37th of his NHL career. Varlamov’s 37 career shutouts are tied with Sergei Bobrovsky for tenth-most amongst active NHL netminders. The 21-save showing earned the Islanders their third shutout of the 2022-23 campaign, becoming just the third NHL club to record three shutouts so far this season (Detroit, Winnipeg).

AGAINST THE BLUES
The Islanders enter tonight’s game with a 9-2-2 record against St. Louis, dating back to the 2015-16 season. On home ice, the Islanders are 5-0-1 through their last six matchups. Tonight’s game will be the Islanders’ second time hosting St. Louis in franchise history. The last time the Blues visited UBS Arena was a matinee game on March 5, 2022, a 2-1 Islander win. Brock Nelson and Oliver Wahlstrom scored in the win. The Islanders enter tonight’s game with a 4-4-0 record against Central Division opponents and and 8-4-0 record against Western Conference teams. The Islanders and Blues last met on November 3, when the Islanders earned a 5-2 win at Enterprise Center. Ten Islanders found the scoresheet. Anders Lee, who has recorded 11 points (six goals, five assists in 14 career games against the Blues, tallied a goal and an assist in the victory.

THIRD PERIODS
14 Islander victories in the 2022-23 campaign have included at least one third period goal. The Islanders have outscored opponents 36-28 in the third period through 26 games this season. Their victory on Sunday was only the second time this season the Islanders have won a game without finding the back of the net in the third. However, they score three times in the second frame, the fifth time this season they have recorded at least three goals in the second frame. They scored a season-high four goals in the second period on November 3, the last time they faced St. Louis.

17

Islanders forward Matt Martin scored his third goal of the season and the eventual game-winning goal. It was his 14th career game-winning tally and his first since December 29, 2019. With his third goal of the season, Martin ties his goals total from the 2021-22 campaign. Last year, the Windsor, ON native did not score his third goal of the season until Islander game #77. Martin leads the Islanders with 86 hits through 26 games so far this season, eighth-most in the league.

11

Islanders forward Zach Parise scored his eighth goal of the season on Sunday. Parise is second on the Islanders in goals and leads active Islanders in points against St. Louis. He enters tonight’s matchup with 22 points (10g, 22a) in 43 career games against the Blues.

He served as captain of the Tucson Roadrunners (AHL) during the 2021-22 season, before signing with the Islanders as a free agent on August 23, 2022. This season with Bridgeport (AHL), the Milwaukee, WI native has tallied 10 points (seven goals, three assists) in eighteen games.

PENALTY KILL
The Islanders enter tonight’s game 81.5% on the penalty kill through 26 games this season. They have allowed 15 power play goals this year. Just three teams have allowed fewer (Boston, San Jose, Winnipeg). Islanders defenseman Scott Mayfield has recorded 89:34 shorthanded TOI this season, leading the Islanders and fourth-most amongst all NHLers (Lindell, Hakanpaa, Savard). Mayfield is a +6 through 26 games this season. Adam Pelech has skated 76:04 shorthanded TOI, and enters tonight’s game as the Islanders plus-minus leader (+13).

GOALS AGAINST
Entering tonight’s game, the Islanders have a team goals-against average of 2.54 through 26 games. It is tied with Toronto for third-lowest in the league, and is second-lowest in the Metropolitan Division behind New Jersey. Islanders netminder Ilya Sorokin has a save percentage of .932 through 18 games this season, second-most amongst goalies with at least ten appearances so far this season. On November 28, the NHL announced that Ilya Sorokin was selected as the the Third Star of the Week ending in November 27. In his last five starts (since November 21), Sorokin has made 152 saves on 160 shots, and has posted a .950 save percentage. Sorokin’s next win will be the 50th of his career.

In 27 games this season, Fiala’s 20 assists are tied for ninth-most in the league among forwards and sits six behind Edmonton’s
Connor McDavid (26) the lead league. Of Fiala’s 28 points, 20 have come at even-strength. Since the beginning of last season, Fiala has notched 87 even-strength points, which is tied for seventh-most among all skaters in the league:

Nevada Takes on Pepperdine in Tuesday Night Matchup

RENO, Nev. – The University of Nevada Men’s Basketball team will continue their current three-game road stretch on Tuesday night, as they are set to face Pepperdine at 8 p.m.

The Pack will seek to bounce back after suffering just their second loss of the season Saturday evening at the hands of LMU.

Nevada had a solid defensive outing against the Lions, limiting them to 64 points on a 30 percent shooting from three; however, the Pack’s offense went cold in the second half, as they dropped the first of three consecutive road games.

Jarod Lucas had another strong offensive outing for Nevada, scoring 18 points on 6-12 shooting from the field, including 4-7 from behind the arc. The senior guard has now scored in double-figures in eight of nine contests this season for the Pack, and he currently ranks first on the team and fourth in the Mountain West in scoring at 17.2 points per game. Lucas also ranks second in the conference in free throw percentage (87.0%) and third in 3-point field goal percentage (42.2%).

Nick Davidson also had a solid outing for the Pack on the offensive end of the floor, scoring 11 points to reach double figures in scoring for the second consecutive game for the first time in his career. The redshirt-freshman forward now ranks fifth on the team in scoring (7.7 PPG), fourth in rebounding (4.1 RPG), third in field goal percentage (48.6%), and first in 3-point field goal percentage (47.4%).

Following another strong defensive performance against LMU, the Pack continues to rank in the top five of the Mountain West in almost all defensive statistical categories. Nevada ranks first in opponent field goal percentage, limiting their opponents to just 36.8 percent shooting from the field, in addition to ranking first in the conference in blocked shots (4.78 BPG).

Nevada also ranks fourth in scoring defense (62.0 PPG), third in opponent 3-point field goal percentage (27.8%), and fourth in defensive rebounding (27.7 per game).

Offensively, the Pack ranks first in the Mountain West and 21st in the country in free throw percentage and second in the conference in 3-point field goal percentage, shooting a stellar 37.5 percent this season.

Just as he has done for the majority of the season, senior guard Kenan Blackshear continues to lead the conference in assists per game, averaging 5.8 per contest. Blackshear’s mark of 5.8 assists per game leads the next closest player in the Mountain West by nearly 1.0 assists, as he has done a sensational job of facilitating the Nevada offense this season. Blackshear also ranks 12th in the Mountain West in rebounding (5.9 RPG) and 20th in steals per game (1.1).

Freshman forward Darrion Williams currently leads all freshmen in the Mountain West Conference in points per game (8.3), rebounds (7.6 RPG), assists (2.6 APG), and steals (1.6 SPG). Williams is also shooting phenomenal clips of 49.1 percent from the field, 46.2 percent from behind the arc, and 84.6 percent from the free throw line.

The NCAA released their first NET rankings of the season, one of the primary metrics used in the selection process for the NCAA Tournament, and Nevada earned the 43rd overall ranking in the country, good for third highest in Mountain West.

The Pack will have the opportunity to boost their ranking with a road victory against Pepperdine Tuesday night; however, they will need to lock in defensively and slow down a high-powered Pepperdine offense in order to bounce back from the loss against LMU and achieve their eighth victory of the season.

Scouting Pepperdine

Pepperdine owns an overall record of 5-2 this season, most recently picking up an 88-69 victory over Northern Arizona this past Saturday.

The Waves have been highly successful on the offensive end of the court this season, as they are averaging an impressive 81.0 points per game. Pepperdine plays at an extremely fast pace and takes a large number of pointers, as 41.2 percent of their shots come from behind the arc.

Pepperdine is knocking down an exceptional 42.2 percent of their 3-point attempts, ranking as the sixth-best 3-point field goal percentage in the nation.

The Waves rely heavily on their backcourt to carry them on offense, as they have three guards who are averaging at least 13.7 points per

game.

Sophomore Maxwell Lewis leads the way, ranking third in the West Coast Conference in scoring at 18.0 points per game on 63 percent shooting from the field and 50 percent from three.

Fellow sophomore guard Houston Mallette is also having a strong season for the Waves, as he is averaging 14.9 points per game, while shooting 43.4 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from three.

Sophomore Mike Mitchell Jr. completes the dangerous trio of guards, averaging 13.7 points per game, while hitting 47.2 percent of his shots, including 54.8 percent of his 3-pointers.

Nevada has been exceptional at defending the 3-point line this season, and they will need to maintain that and prevent Pepperdine from getting offensive rebounds and extra possessions on Tuesday night to secure a road victory over the Waves.

Series History

Nevada and Pepperdine have faced off twice throughout history, splitting the series with each team earning one win apiece. The two teams last met in November of last year, with Nevada earning a 79-66 win at home over the Waves.

* Just a day after the Stars rallied from a 5-1 deficit to force overtime against the Wild, the Canucks mounted the first four-goal comeback win of the 2022-23 season, capped off by Elias Pettersson scoring the fastest overtime goal in Canucks history.

* The Golden Knights held off a Bruins comeback attempt to earn a win in their 400th game and became the first team to capture a victory at TD Garden since April 16 (regular season & playoffs).

Mitchell Marner and Jason Robertson are set to put their 19- and 18-game point streaks on the line when the Maple Leafs and Stars face off at American Airlines Center.

ROLLER COASTER RIDE CONCLUDES WITH CANUCKS OVERTIME VICTORY
The Canadiens built a 4-0 lead through the first 16:17 of play but that was only the prelude of what was to come between Montreal and Vancouver. While Jack Studnicka gave the Canucks a 5-4 lead 8:49 into the third period and Josh Anderson restored a one-goal advantage for the Canadiens with three minutes remaining in the final frame, Andrei Kuzmenko (1-1—2)once again tied the game for the Canucks with 1:25 remaining in regulation and set the stage for Elias Pettersson (1-2—3) in overtime.

* A day after Dallas’ four-goal, third-period comeback fell just short against Minnesota, Vancouver secured its third four-goal comeback win in franchise history following Jan. 16, 1973 (vs. TOR) and Oct. 15, 1971 (at CGS).

* Vancouver is the first team to erase a four-goal deficit to win in 2022-23 after four teams accomplished the feat in 2021-22: Arizona (April 29), Florida (April 2 & April 5), Buffalo (March 28) and Carolina (Jan. 1).

DID YOU KNOW?
Overall, there have been 13 four-goal comeback wins dating to 2018-19 (5 seasons), while the previous stretch of 13 such victories spanned from 2003-04 to 2016-17 (13 seasons).

MORE FROM VANCOUVER’S FOUR-GOAL COMEBACK

Elias Pettersson (12-20—32 in 26 GP), who eclipsed the 30-point mark in 2022-23, netted the overtime winner 13 seconds into 3-on-3 action – the fastest goal to start an overtime period in Canucks history, besting Dixon Ward (0:15 on Nov. 29, 1993).

Bo Horvat (20-7—27 in 26 GP) scored his 20th goal of the season 103 seconds before Ilya Mikheyev tied the game 4-4 in the third period to join Jason Robertson (23 in 25 GP) and Connor McDavid (22 in 26 GP) as the NHL’s third 20-goal scorer in 2022-23.

Bruce Boudreau earned his third career win in a game where his team trailed by four-plus goals (also Dec. 23, 2008 w/ WSH & March 31, 2014 w/ ANA). Only two other coaches have as many such victories: Joel Quenneville (5x) and Glen Sather (4x).

GOLDEN KNIGHTS CLAIM VICTORY IN 400TH GAME, SPOIL BRUINS’ HOME WINNING STREAK
The Golden Knights built a 3-0 lead only to have the Bruins rally to force overtime, but Logan Thompson made 40 saves and turned aside all five shootout attempts to help Vegas earn a victory in its 400th contest and snap Boston’s NHL-record season-opening home winning streak at 14 games.

* The Golden Knights helped Bruce Cassidy capture a victory in his return to TD Garden – an arena where he posted a 149-59-23 record during his tenure with the Bruins (regular season & playoffs). Vegas’ 235 all-time victories are tied with Toronto for the third-most wins since entering the League in 2017-18, trailing only Tampa Bay (261) and Boston (247).

* Thompson, who leads all rookie goaltenders with 13 wins this season and sits one behind Linus Ullmark (14-1-0 w/ BOS) for the most among all netminders, posted his second straight road game with at least 40 saves (also 43 on Dec. 1). He became just the 11th rookie goaltender since 1955-56 (when shots on goal began being tracked) to register 40-plus saves in consecutive appearances, both on the roadJuuse Saros (Dec. 5 & Dec. 14, 2017 w/ NSH), Jeff Deslauriers (April 11 and Oct. 12, 2009 w/ EDM) and Dan Blackburn (Nov. 23 & Dec. 1, 2001 w/ NYR) are the only ones to do so since the 1990s.

In a contest that featured the Rangers and Blues combine for four game-tying tallies as well as five goals in a span of 3:53, Artemi Panarin (0-2—2) and Adam Fox (1-0—1) propelled New York to victory. Only three contests in 2022-23 have featured more game-tying goals: Nov. 29 (SEA at LAK: 6), Nov. 1 (ANA at SJS: 5) and Oct. 27 (EDM at CHI: 5).

* Panarin (193-406—599 in 534 GP), who moved within one point of 600 in his career, registered his 103rd career multi-assist game since making his NHL debut in 2015-16. Connor McDavid (137 GP) is the only player with more over that span.

* Fox scored the third of five goals during the 3:53 span to extend his home point streak to nine games dating to Nov. 3 (3-7—10). Only five defensemen in the past 15 seasons have posted a longer home point streak than the Rangers blueliner: Brent Burns (12 GP in 2017-18), John Klingberg (11 GP in 2017-18), P.K. Subban (10 GP in 2015-16), Torey Krug (10 GP in 2013-14) and Mike Green (14 GP in 2009-10).

NHL-FIRST TAKES SPOTLIGHT AT AMERICAN AIRLINES CENTER
Mitchell Marner and Jason Robertson, who each hold the two longest point streaks in 2022-23, will be on opposite ends of the ice when the Maple Leafs visit the Stars at 8:30 p.m. ET on Hulu, ESPN+ and Sportsnet. It will mark the first game in NHL history to feature two players with an active point streak of at least 18 consecutive games.

* Toronto and Dallas first faced off on Oct. 20, with neither Marner nor Robertson finding the score sheet. It wasn’t until three and four games later, respectively, that the pair began their current point streaks.

* Marner (9-17—26 in 19 GP) can become the fourth active player to record a point streak of at least 20 games. The others: Patrick Kane (26 GP in 2015-16 & 20 GP in 2018-19), Sidney Crosby (25 GP in 2010-11) and Paul Stastny (20 GP in 2006-07).

* Robertson has recorded 21-13—34 through his 18-game run. Only seven different players in NHL history have scored more goals during a point streak of at least 18 contests, including one active skater: Sidney Crosby (26 in 25 GP; 2010-11 w/ PIT).
