The Starting 11 — Third-Year Quarterbacks Star As NFL Enters Fourth Quarter of 2022 Season

0

Four quarterbacks selected in the 2020 NFL Draft – Cincinnati’s JOE BURROW (No. 1 overall), Miami’s TUA TAGOVAILOA (No. 5), the Los Angeles Chargers’ JUSTIN HERBERT (No. 6) and Philadelphia’s JALEN HURTS (No. 53) – have shined in starting roles this season and each enter Week 14 ranked among the NFL’s top 10 in touchdown passes.

Only two draft classes over the last four decades have finished a season with four-or-more quarterbacks ranked among the top 10 in touchdown passes: The quarterback draft class of 1983 (Pro Football Hall of Famers JOHN ELWAYJIM KELLY and DAN MARINO, and TONY EASON and KEN O’BRIEN in 1986), and the class of 2004 (ELI MANNINGPHILIP RIVERSBEN ROETHLISBERGER and MATT SCHAUB in 2009).

Burrow, who ranks second in the league in passing yards (3,446) and tied for second in touchdown passes (25), looks to secure his second-consecutive winning season as the CINCINNATI BENGALS (8-4) host the CLEVELAND BROWNS (5-7) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS).

Herbert and the LOS ANGELES CHARGERS (6-6) host Tagovailoa, the NFL’s leader in passer rating (112.0), and the MIAMI DOLPHINS (8-4) on Sunday Night Football (8:20 PM ET, NBC). Tagovailoa, who is 24 years old, is bidding to become the second-youngest qualified player ever to lead the league in passer rating, behind Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO, who was 23 years old in 1984.

Herbert, who ranks fourth with 3,339 passing yards in 2022 and has 12,689 career passing yards, can break the NFL record held by ANDREW LUCK (12,957) for the most passing yards by a player in his first three seasons. Only PATRICK MAHOMES (13,387) and TOM BRADY (13,281) have more passing yards than Herbert over the past three seasons.

Hurts and the PHILADELPHIA EAGLES (11-1) look to secure their second-consecutive playoff berth under head coach NICK SIRIANNI when they visit the NEW YORK GIANTS (7-4-1) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX), the first game of a three-game road trip for the Eagles. Kansas City (Weeks 13-15) and Miami (Weeks 13-15) are also in the midst of three-game road trips, three of the four to occur during the 2022 schedule (Green Bay – Weeks 7-9).

The Starting 11 entering Week 14…

1.     BOUNCE-BACK TEAMS: In each conference, three teams that failed to make the playoffs last season enter this week in postseason position. In the AFC, BALTIMORE (8-4), MIAMI (8-4) and the NEW YORK JETS (7-5) would make the playoffs if the season ended today. Meanwhile, in the NFC, MINNESOTA (10-2), the NEW YORK GIANTS (7-4-1) and SEATTLE (7-5) would be playoff teams. Since 1990 – a streak of 32 consecutive seasons – at least four teams have qualified for the playoffs in every season that were not in the postseason the year before.

2.     NUMBER OF THE WEEK – 205: On the West Coast Sunday at 4:25 PM ET, the NFL will kick off the 205th game of the regular-season schedule, marking the beginning of the season’s fourth quarter.

  • The last six teams have their 2022 byes this week. Other than the period from 1999-2001, when the NFL had 31 teams and at least one club had a bye each week, Week 14 is tied for the latest bye weeks in league history (along with 2021). After this week, every team will have played 13 games, with four games remaining. The regular season ends in 33 days.

3.     PHILLY FACES GIANT OBSTACLES: Two of the Eagles’ final five games are against the NEW YORK GIANTS (7-4-1), starting Sunday at MetLife Stadium (1:00 PM ET, FOX). PHILADELPHIA (11-1) can clinch a playoff berth for the second-consecutive season with a win. Sunday marks the first time the Eagles and Giants have faced off with each team having at least seven wins since Dec. 19, 2010.

4.     SPOTLIGHT – INDIVIDUAL MATCHUP: Raiders wide receiver DAVANTE ADAMS this week sees Rams cornerback JALEN RAMSEY across the line of scrimmage on Thursday Night Football (8:15 PM ET, Prime Video). LAS VEGAS (5-7), looking for its fourth straight win, travels to SoFi Stadium to face the LOS ANGELES RAMS (3-9). Adams, who has registered seven touchdown receptions over his last five games, is tied for the NFL lead with 12 touchdown catches this season. Ramsey is a five-time Pro Bowler.

5.     SPOTLIGHT – TEAM MATCHUP: Since the beginning of the 2020 season, the Bills rank first in points scored (29.3 per game) while also allowing the NFL’s fewest points (19.4 per game).

  • This week, BUFFALO (9-3) hosts the NEW YORK JETS (7-5) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS). It’s the first time the teams have met with each team having at least seven wins since the end of the 2015 season. It’s also the 125th all-time meeting in the series (Buffalo leads, 67-57, including one postseason game, the Bills’ 1981 Wild Card playoff win over the Jets at Shea Stadium).
  • Jets rookie wide receiver GARRETT WILSON leads all NFL players since the beginning of Week 12 with 257 receiving yards while rookie running back ZONOVAN KNIGHT, who has at least 100 scrimmage yards in each of the past two weeks, joined PHILLIP LINDSAY (2018) as the only undrafted players in the common-draft era with at least 100 scrimmage yards in each of their first two career games.

6.     STREAK SPEAK: The Chiefs have won 13 straight over the Broncos, the NFL’s second-longest active winning streak by one team over another (the Patriots have won their last 14 meetings with the Jets).

  • When KANSAS CITY (9-3) visits DENVER (3-9) on Sunday (4:05 PM ET, CBS), PATRICK MAHOMES will return to the site of his first NFL start. Since that day, the 2017 regular-season finale, Mahomes leads the NFL with 22,799 passing yards and 181 touchdown passes.
  • With a Chiefs victory, ANDY REID will become the third head coach in NFL history to record at least 10 regular-season wins in eight consecutive seasons, joining BILL BELICHICK (17 consecutive seasons from 2003-19) and GEORGE SEIFERT (eight consecutive seasons from 1989-96).
  • A Kansas City victory combined with a Los Angeles Chargers loss would clinch a seventh-consecutive AFC West division title for the Chiefs.
  • The CLEVELAND BROWNS (5-7) draw the CINCINNATI BENGALS (8-4) in the latest installment of the Battle of Ohio on Sunday at Paycor Stadium (1:00 PM ET, CBS). Since head coach KEVIN STEFANSKI took the Cleveland reins, the Browns have won five straight over their in-state division rival, Cleveland’s longest series winning streak in the series since a seven-game stretch from 1992-95, when BILL BELICHICK was the Browns’ head coach.

7.     DID YOU KNOW?: The BALTIMORE RAVENS (8-4) have an opportunity to win the AFC North after finishing last in the division last year. In 2021, Cincinnati completed a worst-to-first turnaround, winning its division the year after finishing in last place. In 17 of the past 19 seasons (2003-21), at least one team has captured its division title the season after finishing in last or tied for last place.

8.     UNDER-THE-RADAR STORYLINE: The MINNESOTA VIKINGS (10-2) can clinch a playoff berth with a win or tie at DETROIT (5-7) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX). But another significant story could be developing in the other locker room. Head coach DAN CAMPBELL has his Lions in a position this season to become the first team since the NFL expanded the playoffs in 1990 to make the postseason after a 1-6 start. The Lions have won four of their last five and remain in the NFC hunt. This week could be key for Detroit, considering the history of 5-7 teams.

  • At least one team with a 6-7 record after 13 games has qualified for the playoffs in each of the past four seasons, including two such teams in each of the past two years.
  • Another 5-7 team, PITTSBURGH, has won three of its past four after opening 2-6. Only one team since 1990, Washington in 2020, has made the playoffs after beginning a season 2-6. The Steelers host BALTIMORE (8-4) on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, CBS).

9.     TREND TIME: Since Week 7, when quarterback DAK PRESCOTT returned from injury, the Cowboys are 5-1 and lead the league with 37.2 points per game over the past seven weeks. The Cowboys also rank second in total offense (411 yards per game) over that span, trailing only Kansas City (464.2). This week, DALLAS (9-3) hosts HOUSTON (1-10-1), on Sunday (1:00 PM ET, FOX). The Lonestar State teams have split their last two games, with each decided on an overtime field goal.

10.  THIS WEEK IN NFL HISTORY: Dec. 12, 1982 (40 years ago) – On a frozen, snow-covered field at Schaefer Stadium, New England takes a timeout with 4:45 remaining in the fourth quarter. Snowplow driver Mark Henderson clears a path for STEVE GROGAN, who then holds for a 33-yard field goal by JOHN SMITH that gives the Patriots a 3-0 win over the Dolphins. The contest, immortalized in Patriots lore as the Snowplow Game, doesn’t end up derailing the Dolphins, who go on to earn a berth in Super Bowl XVII. NEW ENGLAND (6-6) travels to ARIZONA (4-8) this week for a Monday Night Football contest (8:15 PM ET, ESPN). While the Phoenix area has received snow as recently as 1998, there’s no snow in the forecast for State Farm Stadium this week.

11.  AND LAST BUT NOT LEASTTOM BRADY grew up in San Mateo, Calif, and graduated from Junipero Serra High School, 17 miles south of Candlestick Park. When Brady was a toddler in 1979, the 49ers hired Pro Football Hall of Famer BILL WALSH, who then selected Pro Football Hall of Famer JOE MONTANA in the third round (82nd overall) of Walsh’s first draft. San Francisco was a combined 8-24 from 1979-80 before winning four of the next nine Super Bowls from 1981-89. Since Brady was born, the quarterback and the 49ers franchise have combined to appear in 17 Super Bowls, with 12 victories. … Brady and TAMPA BAY (6-6) face SAN FRANCISCO (8-4) on Sunday at Levi’s Stadium (4:25 PM ET, FOX).

Smith made his Major League debut with the Rockies in 2022 and was 0-1 with a 7.50 ERA and .791 opponents OPS in 15 relief appearances over six stints.  He struck out 23 batters in 18.0 innings but also walked 15.  The 27-year-old right-hander spent the balance of the season at Triple-A Albuquerque where he was 1-2 with 12 saves, a 3.09 ERA and .671 opponents OPS in 32 relief appearances.  Smith was originally selected by Miami in the 11th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft and was dealt to Colorado on Aug. 14, 2020 for pitcher Jesus Tinoco.  He is 15-12 with 40 saves and a 4.01 ERA in 184 career relief appearances over six seasons in the minors.  Smith has struck out 243 in 217.2 innings and walked 102 while surrendering just 18 home runs.

Criswell pitched for three different teams in the A’s farm system and combined for a 4-10 record, a 4.03 ERA and .724 opponents OPS in 24 games, including 21 starts, with High-A Lansing, Double-A Midland and Triple-A Las Vegas.  He struck out 119 in 118.1 innings and walked 45.  The 23-year-old right-hander was the A’s second round selection in the 2020 draft out of the University of Michigan and is 4-10 with a 4.07 ERA in 29 career appearances, including 26 starts, in two seasons as a professional.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
• The Kraken enter tonight’s game looking to extend their winning streak against the Canadiens to three games. Seattle went undefeated (2-0-0) against Montreal last season.

o A win tonight would make Montreal the third team that Seattle won three consecutive games against (Buffalo, Los Angeles).

• Cale Fleury was drafted by Montreal in the third round (87th overall) of the 2017 NHL Draft and played for the Canadiens during the 2019-20 season.

o Assistant Coach Jay Leach played for Montreal for part of the 2009-10 season.

• Entering play Monday, the Kraken ranked fifth in the NHL with a .688 points percentage this season.

• The Kraken were one of only five teams (Edmonton, Florida, NY Islanders Winnipeg) this season to have three different defensemen score at least three goals entering play Monday. Jamie Oleksiak (four), Vince Dunn (four) and Justin Schultz (three) have all scored at least three times for the Kraken this year.

o Despite only playing in 19 games this season, Oleksiak enters tonight’s matchup just two goals shy of tying his career high of six that he set during the 2020-21 season while playing for the Dallas Stars.

• Martin Jones’ five-game win streak was tied for the longest active winning streak among goaltenders this season entering play Monday.

o His next win will surpass his 2021-22 season total (12), despite playing in only 18 games so far this season.

o Jones’ 12 wins were tied for the second-most in the NHL this season entering play Monday, trailing only Boston’s Linus Ullmark (13).

• The Kraken are outshooting their opponents 581-504 at five-on-five this season. Their 52.8 percent shot share was good for fifth in the NHL entering play Monday according to Natural Stat Trick.

HOT AGAINST MONTREAL
• The Kraken earned their first-ever win at Climate Pledge Arena on Oct. 26, 2021 against Montreal.

• Andre Burakovsky scored his first NHL goal in his NHL debut on Oct. 9, 2014 against the Canadiens.

• Ryan Donato scored a goal in each of Seattle’s two meetings with Montreal last season.

• Yanni Gourde has four points (two goals, two assists) in his last three games against the Canadiens and scored in each of the two games Seattle played against Montreal last season.

o Gourde recorded his 100th NHL point against Montreal on Dec. 29, 2018.

• Philipp Grubauer has won his last four starts against Montreal dating back to March 24, 2018. He posted a 2.20 goals-against average and a .921 save percentage during that span.

• Martin Jones has posted a 9-1-0 record in 10 career games against the Canadiens. He has recorded a .934 save percentage, 2.00 goals-against average and one shutout in those games.

o His .934 save percentage is his best against any team that he has played more than once.

• Jared McCann registered a point (one goal, one assist) in each of the two games the Kraken played against the Canadiens last year.

• Jaden Schwartz has 10 points (three goals, seven assists) in his last 10 games against Montreal.

• Brandon Tanev enters tonight’s game riding a three-game point streak against the Canadiens, totaling four points (three goals, one assist) during that span.

• Alex Wennberg has 14 points (one goal, 13 assists) in his last 13 games against Montreal.

WINNING WAYS
• The Kraken have posted an 12-2-1 record in their last 15 games played dating back to Oct. 29 vs. Pittsburgh. Their 12 wins during that span were tied for second in the NHL entering play Monday and their .833 points percentage and 25 points both ranked third.

• The Kraken are averaging 3.87 goals per game since Oct. 29, which ranked fourth in the NHL entering play Monday.

o They have scored 58 goals in those 15 games dating back to Oct. 29, which ranked ninth the NHL during that span entering play Monday.

• The team is outscoring its opponents 58-42 in its last 15 games played dating back to Oct. 29. Seattle’s plus-16 goal differential ranked fourth in the NHL during that span entering play Monday.

• Seattle is currently ranked second in the Pacific Division with 33 points in 24 games played. They trail only the Vegas Golden Knights (37 points) for the division lead.

• The Kraken have a 7-2-1 record in their last 10 games played. Entering play Monday, they were one of eight teams in the NHL to win at least seven of their last 10 games.

CHEERS TO BENIERS
• Matty Beniers led all NHL rookies this season in goals (10) and points (21), and his 11 assists ranked fourth entering play Monday.

o Beniers’ 10 goals are ranked second on Seattle’s roster, and his 11 assists and 21 points are good for fifth and third, respectively.

• He enters tonight’s game having totaled 12 points (five goals, seven assists) in his last seven games played, dating back to Nov. 19 vs. Los Angeles. According to NHL Stats, it’s the first time a rookie has had at least 12 points over a seven-game span since Vancouver’s Elias Pettersson had 13 points (four goals, nine assists) in seven games from Dec. 4 to 16, 2018.

• Beniers’ 12 points (five goals, seven assists) since Nov. 19 were tied for the seventh-most in the NHL during that span entering play Monday.

• Beniers scored the game-winning goal in the Kraken’s game on Dec. 1, a 3-2 overtime win against the Washington Capitals. It was the first overtime goal of his career and his second game-winning goal of the season (Last: Nov. 1 at Calgary).

o Beniers’ overtime goal came seven seconds into overtime, the fastest overtime goal in franchise history. According to NHL Stats, it was also the fastest goal by a rookie from the start of a regular-season overtime in NHL history. Walter Jackson (0:08 on March 7, 1933) held the previous record.

o Entering play Monday, Beniers is one of two rookies (Fabian Zetterlund) to score an overtime goal this season and is one of three rookies (Pontus Holmberg, Shane Pinto) to score two game-winning goals this year.

• Entering play Monday, Beniers was the only rookie this season to have two three-point games, doing so on Nov. 23 vs. San Jose and on Nov. 27 at Anaheim.

• Beniers is also averaging 17:04 of ice time per game this season, which is the second-most among rookie forwards (Noah Cates; 17:51) and ranks fourth among Kraken forwards.

• The 20-year-old is currently on pace to finish the season with 34 goals, 38 assists and 72 points. 34 goals would be the most since Patrik Laine and Auston Matthews had 36 and 40 goals, respectively, during their rookie season in 2016-17.

EBS AND FLOW
• Jordan Eberle enters tonight’s game having recorded 21 points (six goals, 15 assists) in his last 21 games played and has 11 points (five goals, six assists) in his last 10 games at Climate Pledge Arena.

• His 22 points this season are the second-most on Seattle’s roster and his 16 assists are tied with Andre Burakovsky for the team lead.

• Among players from the 2008 NHL Draft class, Eberle ranks third in scoring this season, trailing only San Jose’s Erik Karlsson (34 points) and Tampa Bay’s Steven Stamkos (29 points).

o Eberle’s 617 career points also ranked third among 2008 draftees, again trailing Stamkos (1,001) and Karlsson (694).

o Eberle was originally selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the first round (22nd overall) of the 2008 NHL Draft. He is one of 28 players from the ’08 class that are still playing in the NHL, a list that includes Kraken teammate Justin Schultz.

• The 32-year-old is currently on pace to finish the season with 21 goals, 55 assists and 75 points. 55 assists would be the most of his career, surpassing his current career high of 42 that he set in 2011-12 while playing for the Oilers.

o 75 points would be the second-most of his career, one point shy of his career-best 76 points that he had in 2011-12. It would mark just the second time in his career that he would have at least 70 points in a season.

• Eberle has played 97:40 at five-on-five with linemates Matty Beniers and Jared McCann. When the trio are on the ice together, the Kraken are outscoring their opponents 10-3, outshooting them 54-40 and have 46 scoring chances to their opponents’ 35 according to Natural Stat Trick.

o The pair’s plus-10 goal differential at five-on-five ranks fourth among all defensive pairs this season according to Natural

Stat Trick.
• Additionally, according to Natural Stat Trick, the Dunn/Larsson pairing ranks eighth in the NHL with 18.3 expected goals.

• Dunn is pacing to finish the year with 14 goals, 41 assists and 55 points, all of which would surpass his current career bests (12 goals, 28 assists, 35 points).

YOU’RE A BURK
• Andre Burakovsky enters tonight’s game leading the Kraken with 25 points (nine goals, 16 assists) this season. It is the first time in his career that he has played a point-per-game pace through his first 24 games of the season.

SETTING THE PACE
• With 24 games played this year, the Kraken are roughly 30 percent of the way through their second season. Heading into tonight’s matchup with the Canadiens, 10 of the 19 veteran skaters on the Kraken’s active roster are on pace to surpass their career highs in scoring.

FORCE OF NECAS
Martin Necas tallied two points (1g, 1a) at LAK (12/3) for his team-leading eighth multi-point game in 2022-23, matching his total in 78 contests last season. He also extended his point streak to four games (11/26-12/1: 3g, 2a) and has now posted three point streaks of at least four games this season after failing to register a point in four consecutive games at any point in 2021-22. He paces the team with 28 points (12g, 16a) through 25 contests in 2022-23 and needs two more goals to reach his total from last season (14).

MEGASETH
Seth Jarvis registered an assist at LAK (12/3) to extend his point streak to five games (11/25-12/3: 2g, 3a), just one game shy of tying Martin Necas (10/24-11/4: 4g, 6a in 6 GP) for the longest point streak by any Hurricanes skater in 2022-23. Jarvis has now earned six points in his last seven games (11/21-12/3: 2g, 4a), with a team-high +6 rating over that span. Before this five-game stretch, he had been held to just one assist in his previous nine contests (11/6-11/23).

ROAD RAGE
With a win over LAK on Saturday, Carolina has now earned a point in each of its last seven road games (11/14-12/3: 4-0-3), marking just the eighth road point streak of seven or more games in franchise history (last: 4/1/21-4/27/21: 4-0-3). The Hurricanes have posted a 9-3-4 record away from home in 2022-23, marking the third-most road wins of any NHL team behind only NJD (11-1-0) and VGK (11-2-1). Carolina has already played 16 road games this season, tied for the second-most of any team, and they are scheduled to play each of their next three contests away from home (12/6-12/13).

Longest road point streaks, franchise history:
12 games: 2/23/04-3/27/04 (8-0-1-3)

Carolina has now converted on the man-advantage in four of its last five games (11/25-12/3: 6-for-15) after being held scoreless on the power play in six straight contests from 11/12-11/23 (0-for-20). Stefan Noesen tallied an assist on the goal and now ranks fourth on the team with seven power-play points (3g, 4a) in 2022-23.

BURN, BABY, BURN
Brent Burns recorded two assists at LAK (12/3) for his fourth multi-point and third multi-assist game in 2022-23. With another two points (1g, 1a) at STL on Thursday, Burns is the first Hurricanes blueliner to post back-to-back multi-point games this season and has joined Sebastian Aho (10/17-10/20: 1g, 5a), Andrei Svechnikov (10/17-10/20: 5g, 1a) and Martin Necas (10/29-10/31: 1g, 3a) as the fourth Hurricanes skater to accomplish the feat. Kochetkov has allowed two or fewer goals in six of his nine appearances this season, and in seven of his eight career wins. Saturday’s game marked just his 10th career NHL/Hurricanes start, and his eight wins are the most in franchise history through any goaltender’s first 10 career starts. Only six netminders in league history have posted nine wins through their first 10 starts, and only three this century: Martin Prusek (OTT, 2002-03), Viktor Fasth (ANA, 2013) and Igor Shesterkin (NYR, 2020).

PESCATARIAN
Brett Pesce tallied an assist in his 500th career NHL game against the Kings on Saturday. He has now registered five points in his last five games (11/25-12/3: 2g, 3a), with a point in four of those contests, after tallying just three assists through his first 20 games of the season. Selected by Carolina in the third round (66th overall) of the 2013 NHL Draft, Pesce became the 14th player and fifth defenseman from his draft class to skate in 500 NHL games. He also joined Nathan MacKinnon (COL, 1-1), Aleksander Barkov (FLA, 1-2), Sean Monahan (CGY, 1-6), Darnell Nurse (EDM, 1-7), Rasmus Ristolainen (BUF, 1-8) and Bo Horvat (VAN, 1-9), who were all selected in the first nine picks, as just the seventh player from his class to play 500 games with the team that drafted him.

RUSSIAN ALONG
Andrei Svechnikov scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season at LAK (12/3), giving him seven points in his last seven games (11/21-12/3: 3g, 4a). He required 10 fewer contests to reach the 15-goal mark than in any previous season (2019-20: 15-21—36 in 35 GP), and he has already tied his 55-game total from two seasons ago (2020-21: 15-27—42). Svechnikov has scored 10 of his 15 goals on the road and ranks tied with Bo Horvat (VAN) for the league lead in that category in 2022-23. Carolina is now 8-1-1 when he scores a goal and 12-2-2 when he registers a point, and only Martin Necas (13-2-3) has found the scoresheet in more of the Hurricanes’ wins this season.

LAST DALLAS STARS GAME
Dec. 4, 2022 – STARS 5 vs. WILD 6 (shootout)
Down 5-1 in the opening minute of the third period, the Stars staged an incredible comeback by scoring four unanswered goals to earn them a point in an eventual 6-4 shootout defeat against the Minnesota Wild at American Airlines Center on Sunday. The Stars became the second team in as many seasons to overcome a four-goal, third-period deficit to at least tie the game. The Florida Panthers, who eventually won the game, did so against the New Jersey Devils on April 2, 2022. Led by a three-goal four-point effort from Roope Hintz (3-1—4), a three-assist performance from Joe Pavelski (0-3—3) and two-point nights from Jason Robertson (1-1—2) and Mason Marchment (1-1—2), the Stars have earned at least one point in the standings in 10 of their past 11 games (6-1-4). Hintz’ hat trick was the second three-goal game of his career, while his four points matched a personal best first established on April 8, 2021 at Chicago (1-3—4). Pavelski assisted on three of Dallas’ four third-period goals to match the franchise record for most in a single period – a feat last achieved by Tyler Seguin on April 2, 2022 (0-3—3 in the first period). Robertson, meanwhile, extended his point streak to 18 consecutive games, which is two games shy of the franchise mark of 20 set by Brian Bellows from Jan. 11-Feb. 21, 1986 with the Minnesota North Stars. Goaltender Jake Oettinger made his 16th start and stopped 12 of 16 shots in 39:50 TOT. Scott Wedgewood came on in relief and turned aside 14 of 15 in the shootout defeat.

STORYLINES
SOGs
The Islanders have recorded 40 or more shots on goal in two straight games for the first time since March 2018. They registered 40 shots on goal in their 3-0 victory vs. the Blackhawks on Sunday night. Friday night vs. Nashville, the Islanders registered 49 shots on goal in their 4-1 loss. It is the most they have recorded in a single game since March 11, 2020, in Vancouver, a game that went to the shootout. In regulation, the Islanders have not recorded that many shots on goal since October 25, 2008. Nine of the Islanders’ season-high 49 shots on goal were taken by Mathew Barzal, who matched a career-high. Entering tonight’s game, defenseman Noah Dobson leads the team in shots on goal and is tied for fifth amongst NHL defensemen with 80 (Trouba). Brock Nelson is second on the Islanders, with 78.

29

Islanders forward Brock Nelson scored his 12th goal of the season on Sunday night, to help the Islanders defeat the Blackhawks at home. Nelson leads the Islanders with 12 goals so far this season. He has scored points in his last five straight games, the second Islander to record a point streak of five or more games this season (Barzal, 7). Nelson also leads the Islanders with four game-winning goals this season, one of just five NHLers to record four GWGs this season (L. Draisaitl, J. Robertson, A. Tuch, T. Hall). Since his first goal of the season on October 28, the Islanders are 10-0-0 when Nelson scores a goal.

18

Islanders forward Anthony Beauvillier tallied an assist in Sunday night’s game vs. Chicago, his 200th career NHL point. He is the 15th player from his 2015 NHL Draft class to reach the milestone, including teammate Mathew Barzal. Beauvillier is one of nine Islanders with 200 or more career points. He enters tonight’s game one goal away from his career 100th.

VARLAMOV
Islanders netminder Semyon Varlamov tallied his sixth win of the season on Sunday and his 12th shutout as an Islander when he turned away all 21 shots he faced vs. Chicago. It was his first shutout since April 1 (at NY Rangers) and the 37th of his NHL career. Varlamov’s 37 career shutouts are tied with Sergei Bobrovsky for tenth-most amongst active NHL netminders. The 21-save showing earned the Islanders their third shutout of the 2022-23 campaign, becoming just the third NHL club to record three shutouts so far this season (Detroit, Winnipeg).

AGAINST THE BLUES
The Islanders enter tonight’s game with a 9-2-2 record against St. Louis, dating back to the 2015-16 season. On home ice, the Islanders are 5-0-1 through their last six matchups.
