NBA Preview: Indiana Pacers (13-11) at Minnesota Timberwolves (11-12)

0

Andrew Nembhard is proving to be quite the draft night steal for the Indiana Pacers, who conclude a seven-game road trip on Wednesday against the Minnesota Timberwolves.

The 6-foot-5 point guard continues to exceed expectations after being selected with the first pick of the 2022 NBA Draft’s second round.

Nembhard turned in the best performance of his young career on Monday, when he scored a season-high 31 points and added 13 assists and eight rebounds to lead the short-handed Pacers to a 112-104 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Nembhard is averaging 15.6 points and 7.2 assists while shooting 53.4 percent from the floor and 46.4 percent from 3-point range over his past five games.

Indiana snapped a three-game losing streak with the unlikely win over Golden State despite missing six players, including Tyrese Haliburton (left groin), Myles Turner (sore right hamstring) and Chris Duarte (left ankle sprain).

Nembhard could be asked to carry another heavy workload against Minnesota, which has lost four of its last five games.

The Wolves have had three days to regroup following a 135-128 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Saturday. The game featured eight technical fouls, including five on Minnesota.

Center Rudy Gobert was ejected early in the contest, leaving the Wolves vulnerable on the defensive end without Karl-Anthony Towns, who remains out with a calf strain.

Minnesota coach Chris Finch said his team’s lack of composure cost them against the Thunder.

D’Angelo Russell scored 27 points against Oklahoma City, while Anthony Edwards continued his hot streak with 26. The third-year guard has scored more than 20 in eight of his last 10 games.

Minnesota’s defense has become a major source of concern after allowing at least 135 points in three of its last four games. With Towns sidelined, the Wolves’ margin of error is fairly slim.

The Wolves have won their last three meetings against Indiana, including a 115-101 victory on Nov. 23.

NBA Preview: Sacramento Kings (13-9) at Milwaukee Bucks (17-6)

0

Domantas Sabonis and Giannis Antetokounmpo rekindle an old rivalry when the Sacramento Kings tip off a six-game trip with a visit to the Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday night.

Both teams are staring at a healthy amount of road games ahead as they duel for the first of two games against each other this season. They will meet in a rematch at Sacramento in March.

In a promising start to the season, the Kings have held their own away from home, going 5-5 while winning three of their last five. They earned a split on their longest previous trip, winning at Charlotte and Orlando on a four-game trek that included losses to the Miami Heat and Golden State Warriors.

Meanwhile, the Bucks won at Charlotte on Saturday and Orlando on Monday as they began a stretch of 10 of the next 13 on the road. Milwaukee’s one-game stopover at home to face the Kings is one of three one-game visits home in that 26-day stretch.

Sabonis and Antetokounmpo were twice selected as Eastern Conference All-Stars in the same year before the Bucks’ Central Division rival, the Indiana Pacers, dealt their star big man to the Kings last February.

Sabonis has gone head-to-head with the two-time MVP Antetokounmpo 17 times since 2017 without much success. The Bucks have won 12 of those games, including one against the Oklahoma City Thunder, with whom Sabonis began his career, and one last March against the Kings.

Sabonis has averaged 14.2 points and 9.0 rebounds in those games, recording two double-doubles, while Antetokounmpo has gone for 24.9 points and 12.2 rebounds, notching five double-doubles.

Antetokounmpo had a game-high 36 points and 10 rebounds when the Bucks won 135-126 at Sacramento last season. Sabonis countered with 22 points and seven assists.

After sitting out Milwaukee’s win at Charlotte on Saturday with a sore left knee, Antetokounmpo returned to top 30 points for his seventh straight game in a 34-point effort at Orlando. He completed a double-double with 13 rebounds.

The Bucks have won five of six overall, with the lone loss coming at home against the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday.

The Kings have won three in a row after having dropped three straight. They’ve been streaky. They opened the season with a four-game skid but put together seven wins in a row last month.

At 13-9, it has added up to the franchise’s best start since 2005.

That depth of talent was on display in Sunday’s 110-101 home win over the Chicago Bulls. Sabonis notched his first triple-double of the season with 11 points, 17 rebounds and 10 assists, and got plenty of help from Monk (20 points), Fox (16 points and seven rebounds) and Harrison Barnes (17 points). Kevin Huerter (12 points), Keegan Murray (11) and Chimezie Metu (10) also scored in double figures.

NBA Preview: Oklahoma City Thunder (11-13) at Memphis Grizzlies (15-9)

0

The Memphis Grizzlies were able to thrive against the Miami Heat on Monday, even without star point guard Ja Morant.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have had plenty of success lately when their own standout point guard, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, has been off the floor.

Wednesday, the Grizzlies hope Morant will return after missing the win over the Heat with left ankle soreness, while the Thunder hope they are able to continue thriving when Gilgeous-Alexander heads to the bench as the teams face off in Memphis.

Memphis has won three consecutive games and five of its last six, and Tyus Jones has been a big part of the Grizzlies’ success lately.

Against Miami, the Grizzlies’ first victory this season in four games without Morant, Jones had a career-high 28 points on 10-of-16 shooting with 10 assists.

Wednesday’s game is the second of four this season between the teams.

Memphis won the first meeting 121-110 on Nov. 18 in Memphis, with Jones posting 13 points and five assists off the bench.

The Thunder have been hot themselves, entering Wednesday on a three-game winning streak.

The run started against the Spurs in a game Gilgeous-Alexander missed. And while Gilgeous-Alexander has returned and played big roles in wins over the Timberwolves and Hawks to begin their season-long five-game road trip, Oklahoma City has been holding its own when Gilgeous-Alexander has gone to the bench.

The Thunder have outscored their opponents 75-53 in the fourth quarter in the last two games, and they were a combined plus-18 in the fourth when Gilgeous-Alexander checks out of the game.

Early in the season, Oklahoma City regularly struggled without their star and leading scorer on the floor. Now they’re starting to turn that around.

Gilgeous-Alexander has scored at least 30 points in each of his last seven games. He is averaging a career-high 31.3 points per game this season.

During that seven-game stretch, Gilgeous-Alexander has averaged 13.4 free-throw attempts per game. He’s shooting nearly 93 percent from the line this season.

In Monday’s win at Atlanta, Gilgeous-Alexander was 15 of 15 on free throws — all in the second half.

NBA Preview: Washington Wizards (13-13) at Chicago Bulls (9-14)

0

Falling a season-low five games below .500 carries a sting for the Chicago Bulls, to be sure.

Still, team leaders DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine remain steadfast the Bulls won’t allow the skid to discourage them.

Chicago enters Wednesday’s visit from the Washington Wizards on a three-game losing streak. The team’s West Coast road trip concluded with a 2-4 mark, though just one defeat came by double digits.

Acknowledging his personal struggles during Sunday’s 110-101 loss at Sacramento, DeRozan appeared confident the Bulls would work through matters to spark a turnaround.

LaVine displayed both brilliance and defiance in Sacramento, scoring a season-best 41 points while being whistled for a technical foul and darting from the floor to the locker room once the game ended.

Chicago slashed an 18-point deficit to two in the fourth quarter but was unable to sustain its charge as starter Javonte Green (right knee soreness) missed the game.

Washington has lost three straight and six of seven. The Wizards are coming off the largest of their defeats in that span, Sunday’s 130-119 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, which also saw leading scorer Bradley Beal depart in the first quarter with a strained right hamstring.

Beal, who is averaging 22.9 points and shooting a career-best 52.2 percent shooting, will miss the next three games.

Wednesday begins a stretch in which the Wizards will play eight of their next 10 on the road, including a six-game, West Coast road trip featuring a pair of back-to-backs.

Washington edged visiting Chicago 102-100 on Oct. 21 in the teams’ first of four meetings this season, as Beal hit a leaning bank shot with 7.4 seconds to play to provide the winning margin.

DeRozan led all scorers with 32 points, his 10th career effort of at least 30 points against Washington.

Chicago has won four of the past five meetings with Washington at United Center and seven of the past nine overall. The Bulls lead the all-time series 129-108.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Lakers (10-13) at Toronto Raptors (12-12)

0

The Toronto Raptors are preparing for a stern test against an improving team Wednesday night when they play the visiting Los Angeles Lakers.

The Lakers have been playing much better after a slow start to the season, and the combination of LeBron James and Anthony Davis provides a difficult challenge for any team.

Davis was ill and left the Lakers’ 116-102 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night after playing just eight minutes.

James scored 21 points and grabbed 17 rebounds and Thomas Bryant added 19 points and nine rebounds for the Lakers, who were outscored 31-19 in the fourth quarter. Donovan Mitchell scored 43 points for Cleveland to spoil James’ homecoming.

The Lakers are 2-1 halfway through a six-game road trip. They started the season 2-10 but have won eight of their past 11.

The Raptors are coming off a 116-110 home loss to the surging Boston Celtics, who were playing the second half of back-to-back games — as the Lakers will be.

Davis scored 55 points, grabbed 17 rebounds and blocked three shots in a 130-119 win over the Washington Wizards on Sunday. He shot 22-for-30 from the field.

Davis scored 44 points in a 133-129 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on Friday to open the trip.

Health has been an issue for Davis at times.

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawks (13-11) at New York Knicks (11-13)

0

Trae Young is back for the Atlanta Hawks — and just in time to face his favorite foe.

Young and the Hawks are slated to visit the New York Knicks on Wednesday night in the latest rematch of a 2021 Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

Young looks to put more distance between himself and the controversy stemming from his recent one-game absence. Young returned to the Hawks on Monday night, when he posted a double-double as host Atlanta fell to the Oklahoma City Thunder, 121-114.

The Knicks have been off since Sunday, when they continued a four-game homestand by beating the Cleveland Cavaliers 92-81.

Young put together a routine stat line while taking on his usual workload Monday. He finished with 23 points and 10 assists while playing 36:40 — right in line with his season averages of 27.6 points, 9.6 assists, 35.5 minutes per game.

It was his first appearance since Nov. 30.

The fifth-year star guard, battling a right shoulder injury, didn’t attend Friday’s 117-109 win over the Denver Nuggets. The Athletic reported Young’s absence stemmed from a Friday morning disagreement with head coach Nate McMillan, who requested Young attend the pregame shootaround and receive treatment on the shoulder during the walkthrough.

Young wanted to get treated during the shootaround, after which McMillan reportedly said Young could either contribute off the bench Friday or sit out. McMillan said Monday morning he never gave Young such an ultimatum.

Young said he wished the story hadn’t gone public.

Few teams seem to crystallize Young’s focus like the Knicks, against whom he is averaging 27.9 points and 9.2 assists per game in 14 regular season contests. He also averaged 29.2 points and 9.8 assists in the Hawks’ five-game win over the Knicks in the 2021 playoffs, when Young emerged as a Reggie Miller-like enemy during games at Madison Square Garden.

The Knicks will oppose a regular tormentor one game after getting the best of a potential budding thorn in their sides.

Donovan Mitchell, who was linked to New York in trade talks throughout the summer before being dealt to Cleveland, scored 23 points on 8-of-22 shooting Sunday. He collected 38 points on 12-of-20 shooting in the Cavaliers’ 121-108 win over the Knicks on Oct. 30.

The Knicks had much more on their mind Sunday than simply stopping Mitchell.

The win snapped a five-game home losing streak for New York, which was outscored by 28 points in the second half of a 121-100 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday. It also marked just its fourth win this season against a team currently occupying a playoff or play-in tournament spot.

The 81 points allowed were also a season-low for the Knicks, who surrendered the fewest and sixth-fewest points in the NBA, respectively, in Tom Thibodeau’s first two seasons as head coach. But the Knicks entered Sunday having allowed at least 120 points in three of their previous five games.

NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets (7-17) at Brooklyn Nets (13-12)

0

The Brooklyn Nets were dreaming of a perfect homestand until their offense ran into the Boston Celtics.

Now the Nets hold designs on finishing their season-high seven-game homestand with two more wins, starting with Wednesday’s visit from the struggling Charlotte Hornets.

The Nets won the first four games of their homestand with victories over the Portland Trail Blazers, Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards and Toronto Raptors to push their home winning streak to six games.

On Sunday, however, Brooklyn took its first home loss since Nov. 1, in coach Jacque Vaughn’s first game, by falling 103-92 to the Celtics.

The Nets fell to 12-3 when allowing less than 110 points, mostly because their offense could not do enough against the NBA-best Celtics. Brooklyn dropped to 1-4 when being held under 100 points after shooting 40.5 percent, marking the team’s third-poorest shooting performance of the season.

Kevin Durant, who was named Eastern Conference player of the week, scored 31 points but also committed four of his eight turnovers in the fourth quarter when he faced frequent double teams.

Durant also had little help at times. Kyrie Irving was held to 18 points and shot 7 of 21 (33.3 percent), marking his worst shooting performance since returning from his eight-game suspension on Nov. 20.

The Nets played a third straight game without Ben Simmons, who tweaked his calf in the second quarter on Nov. 28. Simmons is expected to sit again Wednesday and would be replaced in the starting lineup by Joe Harris, who is shooting 53.8 percent (21 of 39) over his past four games

Charlotte has lost three of four, with losses to Boston, the Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Clippers while playing without LaMelo Ball (high ankle sprain) and Gordon Hayward (shoulder).

On Monday, the Hornets took a 119-117 loss to the Clippers when they could not stop Kawhi Leonard on the final two possessions. The Hornets could not secure a defensive rebound as Leonard hit the tying putback with 39.7 seconds left and then hit the game-winning 18-footer with 1.4 seconds left.

Charlotte finished with a 49-47 rebounding margin but also allowed 25 second-chance points and 13 offensive boards.

Oubre scored 28 points, marking the fifth straight time he scored at least 20. P.J. Washington added 26 after going 0 of 13 on Saturday against Milwaukee.

NBA Preview: Los Angeles Clippers (14-11) at Orlando Magic (5-20)

0

With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George back in the lineup, the Los Angeles Clippers continue a four-game Eastern Conference road trip on Wednesday when they travel to meet the hapless Orlando Magic.

Orlando dropped its ninth consecutive game and the 11th in the last 12 contests Monday in a 109-102 decision against Milwaukee.

Rookie sensation Paolo Banchero recorded his second career double-double in the loss, with 20 points and 12 rebounds, as well as matching a career-high seven assists as he continued to regain his stride since returning from injury.

Banchero missed almost three weeks in November with an ankle injury. He returned to the lineup Nov. 25 and has scored at least 18 points in six of seven appearances since.

Banchero was one of four Magic scorers to notch at least 19 points against Milwaukee: Moritz Wagner posted 19, Markelle Fultz went for 20 in just his fourth game back from injury, and Franz Wagner scored a team-high 25 points.

An offensive jumpstart is needed for the struggling Magic, who enter Wednesday’s contest with the worst record in the NBA. Their 107.6 points per game ranked next-to-last in the league entering NBA play Tuesday, and they were dead last in assists, with just over 21 per game.

Orlando has strived to establish chemistry with a constantly changing rotation as players return from absences. In addition to Banchero and Fultz, Cole Anthony returned from a 16-game absence on Nov. 30.

Jonathan Isaac could return soon, as well. He was sent to the club’s G League affiliate for rehab practices on Tuesday, per the Orlando Sentinel.

As the Magic roster continues to take shape, the Clippers kicked off their road trip re-establishing a lineup that was ravaged by its own injuries in recent weeks.

Leonard played Monday for the first time in seven games, scoring 16 points — including the game-winning basket — and grabbing six rebounds in less than 28 minutes of work during a 119-117 win at Charlotte.

George played identical minutes to Leonard in his own return from a seven-game absence, recording 19 points and seven assists in Monday’s win.

While Norman Powell remains sidelined, Los Angeles is nearing its most complete rotation of the season. Luke Kennard also returned after missing nine games, connecting on two 3-pointers and scoring nine points off the bench against the Hornets.
