* A pair of Kings joined elite lists Monday, with Anze Kopitar recording his 1,100th career point and Kevin Fiala posting four points on the power play as Los Angeles bested Edmonton at Crypto.com Arena.

* A trio of goaltenders put up big performances to help backstop their respective clubs to victories on the road, including Juuse Saros who became the first netminder in over 27 years with 102 combined saves in consecutive starts.

* A number of U.S.-born players will look to reach season benchmarks Tuesday, including Jack Hughes and Matthew Tkachuk who will both aim to hit the 50-point mark when their respective clubs take to the ice on a 10-game slate.

KOPITAR JOINS KINGS ROYALTY, FIALA HAS FOUR-POINT NIGHT
Anze Kopitar (0-1—1) notched his 1,100th career point and Kevin Fiala (2-2—4) found his name all over the score sheet as the Kings (24-14-6, 54 points) moved within two points of the idle Golden Knights (27-13-2, 56 points) for the top spot in the Pacific Division.

* Kopitar (376-724—1,1000 in 1,254 GP) joined Marcel Dionne (550-757—1,307 in 921 GP) and Luc Robitaille (557-597—1,154 in 1,077 GP) as just the third player to hit the 1,100-point milestone with the Kings franchise. He also became the fifth active skater to reach the mark, following Alex Ovechkin (809-649—1,458 in 1,317 GP), Sidney Crosby (537-919—1,456 in 1,147 GP), Patrick Kane (437-770—1,207 in 1,144 GP) and Evgeni Malkin (456-725—1,181 in 1,020 GP).

* Fiala recorded all four of his points on the man advantage and became the first Kings skater to put up at least four power-play points in a game since Adam Deadmarsh (0-4—4) on Feb. 8, 2002. Only one active player has posted more than four power-play points in a contestTyson Barrie (1-4—5) on Feb. 20, 2018.

ROAD TEAMS SKATE TO VICTORIES MONDAY
The Predators, Kraken and Flyers each picked up wins on the road Monday, with the help of big performances by their goaltenders:

Juuse Saros made 38 saves – for a combined 102 over his past two consecutive starts (64 saves on Jan. 5) – and Roman Josi scored the game winner as the Predators (19-14-6, 44 points) blanked the Senators to gain ground on the Oilers (21-18-3, 45 points) for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference. Saros became the first goaltender in over 27 years to post as many combined saves in two consecutive starts.

Vince Dunn (1-1—2) kept up his high-scoring ways in 2023 while Martin Jones (21 saves) recorded his second shutout of the season to help the Kraken (23-12-4, 50 points) keep pace with the Kings in the Pacific Division playoff race. Seattle, which won its fifth straight game to begin the calendar year and leads all teams in wins and points over that span, has seen a 26-point increase compared to its total at this time last season (10-19-4, 24 points on Jan. 9, 2022) – the only team with a better year-over-year improvement is Boston (+30 points).

Travis Konecny factored on two of his team’s four goals while Samuel Ersson turned aside all 28 shots he faced to backstop the Flyers to a shutout win against the Sabres at KeyBank Center. Ersson (5 GP) required the fifth-fewest appearances by a rookie goaltender to record his first career shutout with the Flyers, behind only Robbie Moore (1 GP in 1978-79), Anthony Stolarz (2 GP in 2016-17), Bob Froese (3 GP in 1982-93) and Doug Favell (3 GP in 1967-68).

U.S.-BORN PLAYERS LOOK TO REACH SEASON BENCHMARKS ACROSS 10-GAME SLATE
A number of U.S.-born players will look to reach season benchmarks across a 10-game slate, including Jack Hughes and Matthew Tkachuk, when the Devils (25-12-3, 53 points) face the Hurricanes (25-8-7, 57 points) and the Panthers (18-19-4, 40 points) visit the Avalanche (20-15-3, 43 points) during a doubleheader on HULU and ESPN+.

* Hughes, who has multiple points in three consecutive games, is one point shy of 50 in 2022-23 (26-23—49 in 40 GP). Should he find the score sheet Tuesday, Hughes will tie John MacLean (41 GP in 1988-89) for the fewest games in Devils/Scouts/Rockies history to reach the mark.

* Tkachuk (20-29—49 in 38 GP) can require the fewest games of his career to reach the 50-point mark (current best: 44 GP in 2018-19). Tkachuk, who is on pace for his second straight 100-point season, can become the third player in Panthers history to record 50 points in 39 or fewer games – he would join Pavel Bure (34 GP in 1999-00) and Jonathan Huberdeau (37 GP in 2021-22 & 38 GP in 2019-20).

* Kyle Connor, who netted a hat trick against Vancouver on Sunday, enters Tuesday one point shy of 50 this season (20-29—49 in 40 GP). He can become just the fourth player in Jets/Thrashers history to record six consecutive campaigns with at least as many points – he would join Ilya Kovalchuk (8), Blake Wheeler (7) and Mark Scheifele (7).

Jason Robertson (28-29—57 in 41 GP) can become the fourth player to reach the 30-goal mark this season and the third to hit 60 points. Robertson, who can become the fastest player to post 30 goals in a campaign with the club since it relocated to Dallas (currently held by Mike Modano: 48 GP in 1993-94), is also on course to match the Stars/North Stars record for most goals (55) and points (114) in a season.

NBA Preview: Orlando Magic (15-26) at Portland Trail Blazers (19-20)

0

Having endured seven straight road setbacks, the Portland Trail Blazers are surely salivating at their upcoming schedule.

Portland begins a stretch in which it plays 10 of 11 games at home on Tuesday night when it entertains the Orlando Magic.

A Jan. 17 game at the Denver Nuggets marks the lone time the Trail Blazers will be away from home the rest of this month.

Yet Josh Hart wasn’t too interested in the location of games after Sunday’s 117-105 loss to the host Toronto Raptors.

Hart has a point: Portland committed 60 turnovers — an average of 20 per game — during a 0-3 road trip that also included losses to the Minnesota Timberwolves and Indiana Pacers.

Trail Blazers coach Chauncey Billups was highly disappointed after the club’s season-worst 24 turnovers against the Raptors.

Overall, Portland has lost seven of its last nine games and has dropped below .500 for the first time this season at 19-20.

Trail Blazers star Damian Lillard scored 34 points against Toronto, the third time he has reached that output in the past seven games. However, he has scored less than 20 three times during the span.

His outside shooting touch has been off during the stretch. Lillard has made just 18 of 66, a meager 27.3 percent.

Lillard was sidelined with a season-ending abdominal injury when the Magic recorded a 113-95 home win over the Trail Blazers on Feb. 8. That halted Orlando’s 10-game losing streak against Portland.

The Magic have lost five of their last seven overall games after being routed 136-111 by the Sacramento Kings on Monday night. The Kings made a franchise-record 23 3-pointers and took advantage of an Orlando defense that allowed 107 points over the first three quarters.

Orlando is 1-1 on a five-game road trip, having delivered a 115-101 win over the Golden State Warriors on Saturday to open the excursion.

While the Magic stand 15-26 at the season’s midway point, the good side of the equation is they have won 10 of 16 games since a porous 5-20 start.

The improvement has Mosley optimistic about the second half of the season.

Standout rookie Paolo Banchero scored 17 points against Sacramento to see a stretch of four straight 20-point efforts conclude. Banchero’s hot streak included a 30-point performance and two 25-point outings.

Franz Wagner had topped 20 in three straight games before having 16 versus the Kings.

Markelle Fultz was 8-of-10 shooting and scored 16 points — his second game with 16.

Magic forward Bol Bol cleared health and safety protocols and is slated to join the team in Portland. He has missed the past four games.

Trail Blazers forward Justise Winslow (ankle) will miss his eighth straight contest.

Angels sign OF Brett Phillips to one-year contract

0

ANAHEIM – The Angels today agreed to a one-year, $1.2 million contract with OF Brett Phillips. In a corresponding 40-man roster move, RHP Austin Warren has been designated for assignment.

Phillips, 28, played in 83 games between the Rays and Orioles during the 2022 season and appeared defensively at all three outfield positions. In 2020, he was a member of Tampa Bay’s American League Championship team and delivered the game-winning hit in the Rays walk-off victory in Game 4 of the World Series.

A native of Seminole, Fla., Phillips was originally selected by Houston in the sixth round of the 2012 Draft and made his Major League debut with Milwaukee in 2017. He has totaled 354 career games across parts of six seasons with the Brewers (2017-18), Royals (2018-20), Rays (2020-22) and Orioles (2022).

YOUTH & CONSISTENCY HIGHLIGHT THE PLAYOFF QUARTERBACKS

The 2022 postseason is filled with young stars on the rise and veterans at the top of their game at the quarterback position.

Ten teams can start a quarterback who is under the age of 28 – Baltimore (TYLER HUNTLEY, 24 or LAMAR JACKSON, 26), Buffalo (JOSH ALLEN, 26), Cincinnati (JOE BURROW, 26), Jacksonville (TREVOR LAWRENCE, 23), Kansas City (PATRICK MAHOMES, 27), the Los Angeles Chargers (JUSTIN HERBERT, 24), Miami (TUA TAGOVAILOA, 24 or SKYLAR THOMPSON, 25), the New York Giants (DANIEL JONES, 25), Philadelphia (JALEN HURTS, 24) and San Francisco (BROCK PURDY, 23). The most quarterbacks under the age of 28 to start at least one game in a single postseason is eight (2012 and 2020).

Two quarterbacks have won at least one Super Bowl title and have been named Super Bowl Most Valuable Player:

  • Tampa Bay quarterback TOM BRADY, who has a league-record seven Super Bowl titles (including leading the Buccaneers to a Super Bowl LV title in 2020), set the NFL single-season record for completions (490) in 2022 and added 4,694 passing yards and 25 touchdown passes as the Buccaneers earned consecutive NFC South division titles for the first time in franchise history. Brady is the postseason’s all-time leader in games played (47), passing yards (13,049) and touchdown passes (86) and has been named Super Bowl MVP five times, more than any player in league history.
  • Kansas City quarterback PATRICK MAHOMES led the NFL with 5,250 passing yards and 41 touchdown passes this season to help the Chiefs earn their seventh consecutive AFC West division title and fifth since he became the starting quarterback in 2018. In 11 career postseason starts, he has 3,381 passing yards (307.4 per game) with 33 touchdowns (28 passing, five rushing) against seven interceptions for a 105.7 rating and has led the Chiefs to four consecutive AFC Championship games with two Super Bowl appearances in the past four seasons. During the 2019 season, Mahomes became the youngest quarterback to win Super Bowl MVP honors as Kansas City earned the Super Bowl LIV title.

Six quarterbacks can make at least their second career postseason appearance:

  • Buffalo quarterback JOSH ALLEN, who led Buffalo to its third-consecutive AFC East division title, recorded 4,283 passing yards with 42 touchdowns (35 passing, seven rushing) this season and became the first quarterback in NFL history with three career seasons of at least 35 touchdown passes and five rushing touchdowns. In his first six playoff starts, he has totaled 1,718 passing yards (286.3 per game) with 14 touchdowns against one interception for a 106.6 rating, the highest passer rating in postseason history among quarterbacks who have started at least five games. He also has 371 rushing yards, one rushing touchdown, and one receiving touchdown in his playoff career. Allen has 176 career combined passing and rushing touchdowns (138 passing, 38 rushing) in the regular season since entering the NFL in 2018, the most by a player in his first five seasons in NFL history.
  • Cincinnati quarterback JOE BURROW recorded 4,475 passing yards with 40 touchdowns (35 passing, five rushing) and a 100.8 rating this season and led the Bengals to a second-consecutive AFC North division title. Last season, Cincinnati became the fifth team to appear in a Super Bowl after finishing in last place in its division the season prior and Burrow became the first quarterback selected No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft to start a Super Bowl within his first two seasons. In four career postseason starts, Burrow has 1,105 passing yards (276.3 per game) with five touchdown passes and a 97.3 rating.
  • Minnesota quarterback KIRK COUSINS is set to appear in his fifth-career playoff game, fourth as a starting quarterback, after leading the Vikings to their first NFC North division title since 2018. In three career postseason starts, he has four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) with a 91.0 rating. This season, Cousins passed for 4,547 yards and 29 touchdowns and became the fifth player ever to record at least 25 touchdown passes in at least eight consecutive seasons.
  • Philadelphia quarterback JALEN HURTS is slated to make his second postseason start after leading the Eagles to their first division title since 2019. He passed for 3,701 yards and 22 touchdowns and added 760 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns, becoming the third quarterback ever with at least 3,500 passing yards, 20 touchdown passes and 10 rushing touchdowns in a season. In his first postseason start last season, he totaled 297 yards (258 passing, 39 rushing) with one touchdown pass.
  • Dallas quarterback DAK PRESCOTT makes his fourth trip to the postseason after leading Dallas to back-to-back playoff berths. In four career postseason starts, he has nine touchdowns (six passing, three rushing), including three consecutive games with both a touchdown pass and a rushing touchdown. Prescott passed for 2,860 yards and 23 touchdowns in 12 starts this season as the Cowboys ranked third in scoring offense (27.5 points per game), including recording 24-or-more points in 10 of Prescott’s 12 starts.
  • Baltimore quarterback LAMAR JACKSON could make his fifth-career postseason start on Super Wild Card Weekend. In his postseason career, he has registered 1,267 combined passing and rushing yards (316.8 per game) with four touchdowns (three passing, one rushing) and is responsible for two of the six 100-yard rushing games by a quarterback in postseason history. Quarterback TYLER HUNTLEY could also make his first-career playoff start.

As many as seven quarterbacks can make their first-career postseason start on Super Wild Card Weekend. The most quarterbacks to make their first career postseason start in a single postseason is seven (1999).

  • Los Angeles Chargers quarterback JUSTIN HERBERT makes his postseason debut after leading the Chargers to their first postseason berth since 2018. He recorded 4,739 passing yards with 25 touchdown passes this season and became the first player in NFL history with at least 4,500 passing yards in two of his first three career seasons. Herbert also joined Pro Football Hall of Famer PEYTON MANNING as the only players in NFL history with at least 25 touchdown passes in each of their first three seasons.
  • New York Giants quarterback DANIEL JONES can make his first career postseason start after leading the Giants to their first postseason berth since 2016. He registered career bests in passing yards (3,205), passer rating (92.5), rushing yards (708) and rushing touchdowns (seven) in 2022 and added 15 touchdown passes in 16 starts this season.
  • Jacksonville quarterback TREVOR LAWRENCE became the sixth quarterback since 2000 to be selected No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft and reach the postseason in one of his first two career seasons after leading the Jaguars to their first AFC South division title since 2017. He set career highs this season in passing yards (4,113), touchdown passes (25) and passer rating (95.2) and over the final 10 weeks of the season (Weeks 9-18), led all AFC quarterbacks in passer rating (104.6).
  • San Francisco rookie quarterback BROCK PURDY is expected to start after helping the 49ers earn their first NFC West division title since 2019. He became the third rookie quarterback ever to win each of his first five career starts, joining BEN ROETHLISBERGER (won first 13 starts in 2004) and MIKE KRUCZEK (first six in 1968) and is one of two rookies in NFL history (JUSTIN HERBERT) with at least two touchdown passes in six consecutive games. Purdy can become the first rookie quarterback selected in the seventh round or later or that was undrafted to start a postseason game in the common-draft era.
  • Seattle quarterback GENO SMITH is expected to make his first playoff start and is looking to become the first quarterback since 2000 (RICH GANNON) to win his first postseason start at least 10 years into his NFL career. He recorded a career-high and franchise-record 4,282 passing yards with 30 touchdown passes and a 100.9 rating this season.
  • Miami quarterback TUA TAGOVAILOA can make his first career postseason start after helping the Dolphins reach the playoffs for the first time since 2016. He recorded career highs in passing yards (3,548) and touchdown passes (25) this season and led the NFL with a 105.5 passer rating, becoming the second-youngest qualified player ever to lead the league in passer rating, behind Pro Football Hall of Famer DAN MARINO, who was 23 years old in 1984. TEDDY BRIDGEWATER can also make his second-career postseason start while rookie SKYLAR THOMPSON can make his postseason debut on Super Wild Card Weekend. Thompson can join Purdy as the only rookie quarterbacks selected in the seventh round or later or that was undrafted to start a postseason game in the common-draft era.

2023 NFL Draft First Round Order

0

CHICAGO BEARS HOLD FIRST PICK IN 2023 NFL DRAFT

The Chicago Bears hold the No. 1 pick in the 2023 National Football League Draft, which is scheduled for April 27-29 in Kansas City, Missouri.

The tentative order of the first round was announced today by the NFL, subject to the results of the playoffs.

The draft order is determined by the following procedures:

(A)            The winner of the Super Bowl game selects last and the loser selects next-to-last in all rounds, regardless of the record of the clubs in the regular season.

(B)            The losers of the Conference Championship games select 29th and 30th in all rounds, according to the reverse order of their standing.

(C)           The losers of the Divisional Playoffs select 25th through 28th in all rounds, according to the reverse order of their standing.

(D)           The losers of the Wild Card games select 19th through 24th in all rounds, according to the reverse order of their standing.

(E)            Clubs not participating in the playoffs select in the first through 18th positions in all rounds, according to the reverse order of their standing.

If, after all the foregoing procedures have been applied, ties still exist in any grouping except (A) above, such ties shall be broken by figuring the aggregate won-lost-tied percentage of each involved club’s regular season opponents and awarding preferential selection order to the club which faced the schedule of teams with the lowest aggregate won-lost-tied percentage.

If ties still exist between teams in the same division or the same conference, the divisional or conference tie-breaking method is used, whichever is applicable.

If ties still exist, the procedures for breaking ties for teams of different conferences shall be applied.

Clubs involved in two-club ties will alternate positions from round-to-round. In ties that involve three or more clubs, the club at the top of a tied segment in a given round will move to the bottom of the segment for the next round, while all other clubs in the segment move up one position. This rotation continues throughout the Draft.

NFL: 2023 Opponents Determined

0

The opponents confirmed to date for the 2023 regular season have been determined by the NFL.

Under the NFL scheduling formula, each team plays 17 games as follows:

  • Home and away against its three division opponents (six games).
  • The four teams from another division within its conference on a rotating, three-year cycle (four games).

  • The four teams from a division in the other conference on a rotating, four-year cycle (four games).

  • Two intraconference games based on the prior year’s standings (two games). These games match a first-place team against the first-place teams in the two same-conference divisions the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place and fourth-place teams in a conference are matched in the same way each year.

  • One interconference game based on the prior year’s standings on a rotating four-year cycle (one game). These games match a first-place team from one division against a first-place team in an opposite-conference division that the team is not scheduled to play that season. The second-place, third-place and fourth-place teams in each division are matched in the same way each year. The home conference for this game will rotate each season, with the AFC teams hosting the game in 2023.

The scheduling formula implemented in 2002 with realignment guarantees that all teams play each other on a regular, rotating basis.

The 2023 schedule, with playing dates and times, will be announced in the spring.

Following are the 2023 scheduling rotation and team-by-team opponents.

NBA Preview: Dallas Mavericks (23-18) at Los Angeles Clippers (21-21)

0

As if it was not obvious already, the Dallas Mavericks over the weekend received even more evidence on just how important MVP candidate Luka Doncic is to their cause.

Doncic missed a game for the fourth time this season on Sunday, this one due to left ankle soreness, and the Mavericks were dumped 120-109 by the host Oklahoma City Thunder. The result gave Dallas two defeats in its last three games, and it will now be looking to get back on the winning track when it heads to Los Angeles on Tuesday for a meeting with the Clippers.

In all four games Doncic has missed this season, the Mavericks have lost. And in the most recent instance before Sunday — Dec. 17 at Cleveland — Dallas also lost in Doncic’s return two days later at Minnesota.

Then the next seven games after that, all victories, showcased Doncic’s immense talent. He averaged 41.7 points, 11.0 rebounds and 9.9 assists during the seven-game winning streak, highlighted by a 60-point, 21-rebound, 10-assist performance Dec. 27 against the New York Knicks. He scored 51 points four days later against the San Antonio Spurs.

Without him Sunday, Christian Wood stepped up with 27 points and 16 rebounds, while Spencer Dinwiddie had 21 points and Tim Hardaway Jr. scored 19. Even without their star, however, the Mavericks made no excuses for the defeat.

The Mavericks are making the best of their long visit to Los Angeles. Doncic and head coach Jason Kidd attended the College Football Playoff Championship Game on Monday at SoFi Stadium between TCU and Georgia. And Tuesday’s game against the Clippers will come before a Thursday contest against the Lakers.

The Clippers likely won’t be in the mood for outside festivities. Their season-long losing streak was extended to six games when they fell 112-108 to the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday. The Clippers trailed by 17 in the second quarter, led by 11 with 6:45 remaining then watched the Hawks close on a 21-6 run.

It is the longest losing streak in the three-season tenure of Clippers head coach Tyronn Lue, who has dealt with a rash of injuries since the campaign began. Paul George (hamstring) and Luke Kennard (calf) both were out against the Hawks.

After Kawhi Leonard sat out a road loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday during the second day of a back-to-back, he returned Sunday to score 29 points in a season-high 38 minutes.

NBA Preview: Phoenix Suns (20-21) at Golden State Warriors (20-20)

0

The Phoenix Suns hope to extend a winning streak and end a losing skid at the same time when they visit the Golden State Warriors and possibly Stephen Curry on Tuesday night in San Francisco.

In a duel between last year’s Western Conference regular-season and NBA postseason champs, Phoenix exacted a double-dose of revenge for their disappointing ending last May with 134-105 and 130-119 home wins over Golden State early this season. Now the Suns will try to make it four straight wins over the Warriors dating to last season.

The Suns were 15-6 at one point before plummeting of late, dropping to 20-21 after losing nine of 10, including the last six in a row.

Playing without Devin Booker, Cam Johnson, Cameron Payne and season-long holdout Jae Crowder, Phoenix has failed to score 100 points in any of its last four games.

The Suns were held to 98 in their most recent outing Sunday against the Cleveland Cavaliers, a 14-point home loss during which Chris Paul joined his teammates on the sidelines with a hip injury.

Paul remains out for the Golden State game as Phoenix tips off a seven-day, four-game trip.

With or without Paul, Deandre Ayton insisted the Suns are capable of bigger and better things.

Ayton (left ankle sprain) is considered questionable for the Suns.

To add insult to injury, the Suns could find themselves the untimely visitors on the night when Curry returns to the Golden State lineup.

The Warriors star, who had 50 points in the most recent loss at Phoenix in November, has missed Golden State’s last 11 games with a dislocated left shoulder. However, he was able to practice over the last two days and the Warriors in turn have slapped a “probable” tag on his potential return for the nationally televised contest.

If the Warriors learned anything from their previous game, a 115-101 home loss to the Orlando Magic on Saturday, it was not to expect much from a player coming off a long absence.

Against the Magic, Golden State got Andrew Wiggins back after 15 games off due to an adductor strain followed by an illness, and saw Andre Iguodala make his season debut following season-long hip rehab. They combined for 12 points (all by Wiggins) in 31 minutes (19 by Wiggins).

Should Curry be able to play, it would come on a special night. The Warriors plan to honor his brother-in-law, Damion Lee, in a pregame ceremony during which he will receive his 2022 championship ring.

Lee, who is married to Curry’s sister Sydel, joined the Suns as a free agent over the offseason after having spent the last four years with Golden State. He currently leads the NBA in 3-point field goal percentage (48.0).

He made four of his five 3-point attempts and totaled 14 points in the two earlier Suns wins over his former team.
