NBA Preview: Cleveland Cavaliers (26-15) at Utah Jazz (20-23)

0

With the Cleveland Cavaliers visiting Utah on Tuesday night, there will be a lot of attention surrounding a former Jazz guard, one who was quite popular with the fans.

This refers to Raul Neto? Ricky Rubio? Not exactly.

Ready or not, Jazz fans. Donovan Mitchell is returning to town for the first time since he was traded away last summer. Considering recent remarks he has made about enjoying Cleveland more than Salt Lake City, it seems some Shakespearian sports drama may accompany Mitchell’s visit.

The question for some Jazz fans my be: To boo, or not to boo?

Outwardly, Jazz owner Ryan Smith and CEO Danny Ainge say they eagerly await his return and continue to root for the All-Star, whom they dealt for a treasure trove of players and draft picks when they decided to break up the Mitchell-Rudy Gobert pairing.

Ainge concurs about Mitchell, who averaged 23.9 points during his first five NBA seasons in Utah. Mitchell is having his best year yet with Cleveland, scoring a career-high 28.8 points per game on 48.8% shooting.

Cleveland comes into Utah having won four of its last five games, including two wins over the Phoenix Suns. Jan. 2 proved a historic night for Mitchell, who sparked the Cavaliers to an overtime win over Chicago by scoring 71 points, with 11 assists and eight rebounds.

Mitchell scored 23 points and sat out the fourth quarter of a 122-99 win over Utah in his first game against former team in Cleveland on Dec. 19.

It wasn’t so fun for the Jazz, who have won only three times since that game. Utah has lost nine of 12, including back-to-back games road games vs. Chicago (126-118) and Memphis (123-118) over the weekend.

As for Mitchell’s reception on Tuesday, new teammate Darius Garland believes it will be positive.

NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets (12-30) at Toronto Raptors (17-23)

0

The Toronto Raptors ended a three-game losing streak on Sunday and will try to build on that win Tuesday night against the visiting Charlotte Hornets.

The 117-105 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers gave the Raptors a 1-2 record halfway through a six-game homestand that they hope will turn their season around.

Tuesday’s contest will be the first of a two-game set at home against the Hornets; Game 2 will be Thursday.

Charlotte is coming off a 116-111 loss Sunday to the Indiana Pacers at Indianapolis. The Hornets opened their four-game trip Friday with a 138-109 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, who defeated the Raptors in overtime on Wednesday.

The Hornets led by nine points early in the fourth quarter against Indiana.

Toronto and Charlotte both have struggled. The Raptors’ victory was only their fourth in the past 15 games, while the Hornets have won three of their past 10.

The teams will meet Tuesday for the first time this season. The Raptors won two of three from the Hornets last season.

Against Portland on Sunday, the Raptors forced 24 turnovers, leading to 29 points. Toronto’s reserves, who have had some recent problems, outscored Portland’s 21-3.

Pascal Siakam led Toronto with 27 points, and Scottie Barnes added 22 points and nine rebounds. Barnes had a heated discussion with reserve teammate Thaddeus Young — who finished with four points and six rebounds — during the halftime warmup.

The Hornets, meanwhile, were outscored 43-32 in the fourth quarter against the Pacers on Sunday.

P.J. Washington led Charlotte with 22 points, and Terry Rozier had 19.

NBA Preview: Oklahoma City Thunder (18-22) at Miami Heat (21-20)

0

It will be a Kentucky reunion when the Oklahoma City Thunder visit the Miami Heat on Tuesday night.

Oklahoma City’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, a first-round pick out of Kentucky in 2018 and the 11th overall selection, has improved his scoring average in all five of his NBA seasons.

The 24-year-old has become a monster this season, averaging 30.9 points, 5.6 assists, 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 steals. He leads the Thunder in free-throw percentage (91.1) and is shooting 34.3 percent on 3-pointers and 52.7 percent on 2-pointers. He has an impressive 24 games this season with at least 30 points.

Miami’s Tyler Herro, a first-round pick out of Kentucky in 2019 and No. 13 overall, is averaging a career-high 21.2 points. Herro, who will turn 23 on Jan. 20, also is averaging 6.0 rebounds, 4.4 assists and a steal per game.

A third ex-Kentucky player who is expected to play Tuesday is Heat center Bam Adebayo, who is averaging 21.4 points and 9.9 rebounds but has been battling a thigh injury and a right-hand contusion.

Butler, who is averaging 21.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, 5.6 assists and 2.1 steals, missed what would have been the game-winning shot at the buzzer Sunday night in a 102-101 loss to the visiting Brooklyn Nets.

The Thunder have won three of their past four games, including 120-109 over the visiting Dallas Mavericks on Sunday night. Dallas was without star Luka Doncic.

Gilgeous-Alexander scored 33 points against the Mavericks, making 11 of 17 shots from the floor. He also hit 11 of 13 free throws.

Greatness has long been predicted for Gilgeous-Alexander. As a freshman following road games, he would sit next to an assistant coach on the plane, going over the film while his teammates slept.

While Gilgeous-Alexander is the face of the Thunder’s attempted revival, other key contributors include 6-foot-3 guard Lu Dort, an elite defender who is averaging 14.3 points; and 6-7 wing Josh Giddey, who is averaging 15.3 points, a team-high 7.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists.

The Thunder’s young core of Gilgeous-Alexander, Dort, 23, and Giddey, 20, also includes 7-foot rookie center Chet Holmgren, 20. But Holmgren, the second overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft, is out for the season due to a foot injury.

Jalen Williams, a 6-6 wing, is another Thunder rookie first-rounder. He has played well, starting 23 of his 36 games while averaging 11.6 points.

White showing All-Star form, Gilgeous-Alexander continues to preach dirty work for the Thunder.

NBA Preview: Detroit Pistons (11-32) at Philadelphia Sixers (24-15)

0

The Philadelphia 76ers will look for a two-game sweep over the visiting Detroit Pistons when the teams meet Tuesday night for the second time in three days.

Playing without Joel Embiid (sore left foot), the Sixers cruised past the host Pistons 123-111 on Sunday.

Embiid has missed the last three games and remains day-to-day.

James Harden more than picked up the slack with 20 points, 11 assists and 11 rebounds against the Pistons for his 71st career triple-double.

Tyrese Maxey scored 23 points and Montrezl Harrell added 20, but Harden was the catalyst throughout the game.

Harden struggled in the previous game against the Chicago Bulls, shoting 4 of 17 from the field in a 126-112 loss. To be fair, the whole team scuffled in the surprising home setback.

Harden didn’t let the loss linger.

Philadelphia’s P.J. Tucker also sat out Sunday’s game with a non-COVID illness. Tucker, who has been hampered with a pinched nerve in his right hand, continues to receive physical therapy. His status for Tuesday also is to be determined.

The Pistons will look to avoid a third consecutive defeat when they visit Philadelphia.

Detroit is playing without Cade Cunningham, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2021 draft, due to surgery on his left shin. Jalen Duren (ankle) and Marvin Bagley III (hand) were also out Sunday.

The result was another loss for the Pistons (11-32), who have the most losses of any team in the league.

Killian Hayes led the Pistons with 26 points and Bojan Bogdanovic added 20, but they were unable to overcome 23 turnovers that led to 23 Sixers points.

Already short-handed, the Pistons are fully aware that they must play a cleaner game at Philadelphia.

Perhaps a road game for the Pistons will help. They actually have more wins on the road (six) than they do at home (five).

While the season has been a struggle, coach Dwane Casey sees a glimmer of hope.

Houston Dash sign MF Emily Curran

NEED TO KNOW:

  • MF Emily Curran has re-signed with the Dash through the 2023 season, with option for 2024
  • Curran made five starts in 17 appearances during the 2022 regular season for Houston
  • Curran returned to the pitch in 2022 after suffering a season-ending injury during the 2021 season

HOUSTON – The Houston Dash and midfielder Emily Curran (formerly Ogle) have agreed to a new contract through the 2023 season with an option for 2024, the team announced today.

“We are thrilled to have Emily return to Houston,” Dash general manager Alex Singer said. “Emily came back from a very difficult injury last season and proved to be a valuable member of our midfield as we pushed to a playoff spot. I am excited to see her continue her development these next few years.”

Curran made 17 appearances and five starts in her return to action after she recovered from a season ending injury suffered in August 2021. The Strongsville, Ohio native picked up where she left off and played a key role in solidifying the midfield. During her 17 appearances, Curran had six key passes and had a 76 percent passing completion rate, one of the highest on the team.

Curran joined the Dash before the 2021 regular season after being acquired in a trade with Portland Thorns FC. The midfielder played collegiately at Penn State University where she made 100 appearances and scored 20 goals for the Nittany Lions.

“Houston has become home. I’ve been here for two years now, the team, the girls, and the staff, they’re all family,” Curran said. “The biggest thing for me is where the club is moving. You can tell they’re trying to become one of the top destinations, one of the top clubs in the world. I’m excited to be a part of an organization that is willing to work for us, be there for us and support us.”

Houston now has 21 players under contract. The current Houston Dash roster can be found listed below in alphabetical order and by position:

Goalkeepers (3): Jane Campbell, Ella Dederick, Devon Kerr

Defenders (7): Julia Ashley, Allysha Chapman, Annika Creel, Caprice Dydasco, Katie Naughton, Natalie Jacobs, Ally Prisock

Midfielders (4): Emily Curran, Shea Groom, Sophie Schmidt, Marisa Viggiano

Forwards (7): Michelle Alozie, Joelle Anderson, Ryan Gareis, Paulina Gramaglia, Nichelle Prince, Ebony Salmon, Maria Sanchez
