MBB-FBS: Northern Illinois Huskies (5-12) at Miami-Ohio Redhawks (7-10)

DEKALB, Ill. – The Northern Illinois University men’s basketball team is back on the road for a pair of games this week, beginning on Tuesday, Jan. 17, when the Huskies travel to Oxford, Ohio, to face Miami. Game time against the RedHawks is slated for 6 p.m. CT and will be available on ESPN+, along with 94-9 WDKB and The Varsity Network app.

NIU is coming off an 84-67 setback to Toledo last time out. Darweshi Hunter (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Kaleb Thornton (Bolingbrook, Ill.) both scored career-highs against the Rockets, Hunter netted 22 points while Thornton had 21, both went 5-of-7 from three-point range in the contest.

Thornton also recorded seven assists, five rebounds and four steals in the contest. Including last Tuesday’s victory over Central Michigan, the Bolingbrook, Ill., native averaged 18.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 4.5 assists and 3.5 steals per game last week, while shooting 55 percent (11-of-20 from the field and 70 percent (7-of-10) from three-point range. Thornton currently ranks sixth in the MAC with 3.4 assists per game and ninth in the conference with a 1.46 assist/turnover ratio.

David Coit (Columbus, N.J.) is averaging 15.7 points per game over the last six contests. Coit ranks seventh in the league with 2.4 three-point field goals per game and is tied for sixth with 1.5 steals per contest. Oluwasegun Durosinmi (Lagos, Nigeria) is currently fifth in the MAC with 1.0 blocks per game.

The RedHawks bring a 7-10 overall record into Tuesday’s matchup, including a 1-3 mark in

MAC play. Miami is 6-5 at home this season and the RedHawks are coming off a 75-61 setback at Ball State last time out (Jan. 14). Three players score in double figures for Miami, led by 17.5 points per game from Mekhi Lairy. Morgan Safford adds 14.2 points, and a team high 5.9 rebounds, per contest while Anderson Mirambeaux is averaging 12.9 points per game.

Miami leads the MAC, and is ranked eighth in the country, in free throw shooting at 79.4 percent.

Four of the last five meetings between NIU and Miami have been decided by five points or less, including both meetings last season as the RedHawks claimed an 85-82 overtime decision in Oxford (Jan. 22, 2022) and a 78-75 victory in DeKalb (Feb. 19, 2022).

Following Tuesday’s trip to Miami, the Huskies will return to the road on Saturday, Jan. 21, when they visit Eastern Michigan. Game time against the Eagles is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CT.

NBA Preview: Brooklyn Nets (27-15) at San Antonio Spurs (13-31)

0

The Brooklyn Nets will be out to prove they can win again without Kevin Durant when they travel to San Antonio to play the struggling Spurs on Tuesday night.

The Nets will make their only trip of the regular season to San Antonio after a 112-102 loss at home to Oklahoma City on Sunday.

Brooklyn dropped its second straight game since Durant went down with a knee injury that will keep him sidelined for at least another week. The team also played without Ben Simmons, who has a sore back.

Seth Curry paced the Nets with 23 points off the bench in the loss while Nic Claxton added 17 points and 13 rebounds to record his team-leading 13th double-double. Kyrie Irving scored 15 points and Royce O’Neale tallied 11 for Brooklyn.

The Nets were up 80-75 heading to the final quarter but immediately surrendered a 15-6 run and never regained the lead. Brooklyn was doomed by 29.3 percent shooting from 3-point range.

Tuesday’s contest will be the first in a five-game trip for the Nets that also will take them to Phoenix, Salt Lake City, San Francisco and Philadelphia over a nine-day span.

The Spurs are just trying to find any way to win. San Antonio has dropped five straight games and eight of its past nine, including 132-119 at home to Sacramento on Sunday.

Jakob Poeltl led the Spurs with 23 points while Josh Richardson added 21 and Keldon Johnson scored 20. Key reserve Doug McDermott missed the game with upper-back tightness.

San Antonio led 64-63 at halftime but couldn’t slow the Kings in a pivotal third quarter and trailed 102-90 heading into the fourth. San Antonio clawed to within four points in the final quarter but could not get over the hump.

The Spurs have not won consecutive games since they captured three straight from Dec. 8-12.

NBA Preview: Portland Trail Blazers (21-22) at Denver Nuggets (30-13)

0

The altitude in Colorado has always given the Denver Nuggets an extra edge when playing at home, and this year they are taking full advantage.

Denver has risen above its opposition after winning 13 consecutive home games and will go for No. 14 when it plays host to the Portland Trail Blazers on Tuesday night.

The 13-game winning streak on their home court has helped vault the Nuggets atop the Western Conference standings halfway through the season. They have won 16 of 19 overall and last lost at home to Dallas on Dec. 6.

Denver had won four straight games by double digits until Sunday night when Orlando rallied from 15 down to take a four-point lead in the fourth quarter. Nikola Jokic bailed out his team by hitting a 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left to win it 119-116.

As stressful as it was, coach Michael Malone said the close victory was a positive.

One negative that came out of the win was a sprained ankle for backup point guard Bones Hyland. The injury happened in the first half, and he didn’t return to the game. Malone said Monday on Altitude Radio that Hyland is day-to-day.

If Hyland can’t go, it might mean more minutes for rookie Christian Braun, who has played well when given the chance. Malone has admitted he needs to find more playing time for Braun.

Denver will try to win the season series against Portland on Tuesday when the Northwest Division rivals play the last of four games against each other. The Trail Blazers won the first game at home, but the Nuggets have taken the last two, including a last-second win at Portland on Dec. 8 thanks to a Jamal Murray 3-pointer with 0.9 seconds left.

Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard scored 40 points in that loss and 34 in Denver’s 13-point win on Dec. 23. Lillard is averaging 35 points in the three games against the Nuggets and 28.8 points per game overall.

Lillard has dropped 50 points and 40 points in two of his last three games and is averaging 38 points over the last five games.

Lillard has been carrying the Blazers, but reinforcements have arrived. Gary Payton II returned after missing the first two-plus months of the season and Nassir Little is also back.

Portland’s Jusuf Nurkic, who played three seasons with the Nuggets before a 2017 trade to the Blazers, has averaged 15.2 points and 9.2 rebounds in 16 games against his former team.

NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (27-16) at Los Angeles Clippers (23-22)

0

Undefeated on the road since the start of the new year, the Philadelphia 76ers will be in a slightly different travel scenario when they visit the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday night in a game that will pit Sixers coach Doc Rivers against his former team.

On Sunday, the Sixers picked up their third road victory in three tries this month, this one against the Los Angeles Lakers. Afterward, there was no postgame travel itinerary as the team was able to stay put in rainy Southern California.

Using a new-look starting lineup, Philadelphia went down to the wire against the much-improved Lakers, earning a 113-112 victory after Joel Embiid provided an insurance basket with 45.7 seconds remaining.

Embiid then disrupted a potential game-winning shot by the Lakers’ Russell Westbrook in the final seconds.

In his fourth game since missing a handful of contests because of left foot soreness, Embiid had 35 points and 11 rebounds in 36 minutes. It was his second game of a back-to-back after he scored 30 points in 36 minutes of a victory at Utah on Saturday.

James Harden added 24 points for Philadelphia on Sunday, a day after he scored 31 against the Jazz, with 18 coming in the fourth quarter of another one-point victory, 118-117.

Tyrese Maxey used a rare game off the bench to score 16 points, including seven in the decisive fourth quarter as the Sixers moved a season-high 11 games over .500. It was just Maxey’s third game off the bench, and the first two were in his return from a fractured foot.

Rivers said Maxey suggested the lineup change, and Maxey confirmed his willingness to have a role in the second unit. Rivers was known for having Lou Williams anchor his second unit when he was the Clippers’ coach.

The Clippers enter Tuesday’s game off a much-needed 121-100 victory over the Houston Rockets on Sunday, just their second win in nine games. Without Paul George (hamstring) for the fifth consecutive game, Terance Mann scored a career-best 31 points for Los Angeles.

After seven seasons with Rivers as their head coach, the Clippers are in their third season with Tyronn Lue, who has been challenged with finding an effective mix of players in a season when the team has been crushed by injuries.

Kawhi Leonard, who has missed 24 games this season in a rocky return from knee surgery, had 30 points for Los Angeles on Sunday.

After the Clippers gave up 63 points in the first half, they held the Rockets to 10 in the fourth quarter.

Jones, Raymond and Kucherov Named NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the Week

0

NEW YORK – Seattle Kraken goaltender Martin Jones, Detroit Red Wings left wing Lucas Raymond and Tampa Bay Lightning right wing Nikita Kucherov have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Jan. 15.

FIRST STAR – MARTIN JONES, G, SEATTLE KRAKEN

Jones went 3-0-0 with a 1.67 goals-against average, .933 save percentage and two shutouts to help the Kraken (26-12-4, 56 points) earn four wins en route to becoming the first team in NHL history to sweep a road trip of seven or more games. He opened the week with consecutive shutouts, making 21 saves in a 4-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens Jan. 9 and 27 stops in a 3-0 win against the Boston Bruins Jan. 12 – the latter performance snapping the Bruins’ season-opening home point streak at 22 contests (19-0-3). It marked the second time in Jones’ NHL career that he has posted back-to-back shutouts, following Oct. 10-13, 2015 (w/ SJS), and the first clean sheet by a visiting goaltender in Boston since Feb. 10, 2022 (Frederik Andersen w/ CAR). Jones then turned aside 22 shots in an 8-5 triumph over the Chicago Blackhawks Jan. 14 as Seattle finished its road trip with a 7-0-0 record and extended its overall winning streak to eight games dating to Jan. 1. The 33-year-old Jones has made 28 starts and 31 total appearances in 2022-23, ranking third in the NHL with 21 wins (21-5-3) and sharing second place with three shutouts to go along with a 2.76 goals-against average and .895 save percentage.

SECOND STAR – LUCAS RAYMOND, LW, DETROIT RED WINGS

Raymond registered 3-4—7 in three contests to guide the Red Wings (18-16-7, 43 points) to a pair of victories. He began the week with consecutive three-point performances (a first in his NHL career), collecting 1-2—3 in both a 7-5 triumph over the Winnipeg Jets Jan. 10 and a 4-1 win against the Toronto Maple Leafs Jan. 12. The 20-year-old Raymond then scored once in a 4-3 loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets Jan. 14; it marked his 36th career goal, the third-most by a Detroit skater before age 21 behind only Steve Yzerman (83) and Dylan Larkin (40). Raymond, who compiled 23-34—57 in 2021-22 (82 GP) en route to being selected to the All-Rookie Team and finishing fourth in Calder Memorial Trophy voting, sits third on the Red Wings with 13-17—30 through 41 total games this season.

THIRD STAR – NIKITA KUCHEROV, RW, TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

Kucherov collected 3-4—7 (including 1-4—5 on the power play) in three outings to propel the Lightning (27-13-1, 55 points) to a perfect week. He notched 2-2—4, highlighted by the game-winning goal, in a 6-3 triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets Jan. 10. It marked Kucherov’s 21st career four-point performance, which ranks second in the NHL since he entered the League in 2013-14 (behind only Connor McDavid: 30). Kucherov then posted 1-1—2 in a 5-4 victory against the Vancouver Canucks Jan. 12 before closing the week with an assist in a 4-2 win versus the St. Louis Blues Jan. 14. The 29-year-old Kucherov has skated in 41 total contests this season, placing among the League leaders in assists (2nd; 45), power-play assists (2nd; 22), points (3rd; 62) and power-play points (3rd; 28).

Winnipeg Blue Bombers re-sign defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat

0

WINNIPEG, MB., – The Winnipeg Blue Bombers today announce the club has signed American defensive end Jackson Jeffcoat to a one-year contract extension. He was scheduled to become a free agent next month.

Jeffcoat (6-3, 243, University of Texas; born: December 26, 1990, in Dallas, TX) returns to the Blue Bombers for a sixth season in 2023.

Despite missing six regular season games due to injury, Jeffcoat finished the 2022 campaign with four quarterback sacks, 20 defensive tackles, one interception along with a forced fumble and fumble recovery.

He was especially effective in the playoffs with a sack in each of the Western Final and Grey Cup games, adding a forced fumble in the championship loss to the Toronto Argonauts.

Jeffcoat enjoyed a career year in 2021, racking up a career-best nine quarterback sacks to lead the Blue Bombers, while forcing a league-best four fumbles and adding 26 tackles and two pass knockdowns. Those totals saw him earn spots on both the West Division and CFL All-Star teams for the first time in his career.

Jeffcoat now has 30 sacks and 126 tackles in 64 regular season games with the Blue Bombers.

A star during his college days with the Texas Longhorns where he was a Consensus All-American and the Big 12 Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 2013, Jeffcoat joined the Bombers in 2017 after stints in the NFL with Seattle, Washington and Cleveland.
