OAKLAND ATHLETICS NOTES:

No release available.

BALTIMORE ORIOLES NOTES:

YESTERDAY’S NEWS: Baltimore rallied with two runs in the seventh inning to tie the game but surrendered four runs in the final two innings and fell to Oakland, 8-4, last night…Jorge Mateo recorded his team-leading fourth multi-hit game of the season while Adley Rutschman tied the game in the seventh with a two-out single for the O’s.

AGAINST OAKLAND: The O’s and A’s are meeting for their first series of the year… Baltimore will play seven games against Oakland this season…The Orioles will travel to RingCentral Coliseum on August 18-20…The O’s went 3-4 against the A’s in 2022, dropping three of four games in Oakland from April 18-21 before taking two of three at Oriole Park from September 2-4.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Orioles will travel to Chicago to face the White Sox for three games tomorrow through Sunday, then have a scheduled off day before traveling to Washington, D.C. for two games against the Nationals from April 18-19.

BIG TIME RUTSCH: Adley Rutschman has tallied a hit in six consecutive games since April 7, the longest streak by an O’s batter this season, while slashing .526/.654/.895 (10-for-19) with one double, two home runs, six runs scored, four RBI, and seven walks during that stretch…He’s also reached base safely in nine straight games with a .513 on-base percentage since April 3.

Entering today’s games, Rutschman ranks among AL leaders in average (4th, .391), hits (T-4th, 18), on-base percentage (5th, .491), OPS (6th, 1.100), and total bases (T-9th, 28).

Homered in back-to-back games (4/9-10) for the first time in his career.

Rutschman is batting .412/.524/.588 (7-for-17) against lefties this season after slashing .173/.287/.265 (17-for-98) against southpaws in his rookie year.

Last night marked his first game-tying hit in the seventh inning or later of the season, knocking in Cedric Mullins with a two-out single in the seventh.

MOUNT UP: On Tuesday, Ryan Mountcastle became the third player in Orioles history with nine RBI in a game, tying Jim Gentile (5/9/61 at MIN) and Eddie Murray (8/26/85 at CAL) for the team record…Mountcastle is the first Oriole and third player to do so at Oriole Park, joining New York-AL’s Danny Tartabull (9/8/92) and Kansas City’s Mike Moustakas (9/12/15).

His grand slam in the seventh inning was the second of his career (5/22/21 at WSH) and the first by an O’s batter this season; the blast traveled 456 feet, the farthest home run by an Oriole this season and the farthest of his career.

He has seven career multi-homer games and two against the A’s (9/3/22).

His nine barrels this season are tied for third in MLB, per Statcast; his 20 batted balls of 95+ mph are tied for eighth-most.

HAYS OF OUR LIVES: Austin Hays batted leadoff on Tuesday for the first time this season and finished 4-for-5 with a double, a homer, a career-high four runs scored, and two RBI…He is only the second Oriole since 2015 to score four runs in a game, along with Ryan Mountcastle on May 30, 2022 at Boston…Hays homered in back-to-back games on Monday and Tuesday for the third time in his career and for the first time since April 24-26, 2022. Three of Hays’ four hardest-hit balls and six of 11 in 2023 have come in this series, including his leadoff double on Tuesday which was 110.2 mph, per Statcast; the double was the second-hardest hit ball of his career, trailing only a 110.3 mph home run on May 14, 2021. Tuesday marked his second game this year with at least four hits, joining a five-hit effort on April 1 at Boston; he and Adley Rutschman are two of the three MLB players with two games of at least four hits this season (MIA’s Luis Arráez) and the duo have accounted for four of the 18 4+ hit games in MLB this season.

NEED FOR SPEED: Baltimore’s 17 stolen bases are tied for second in MLB with Arizona and behind only Cleveland (19 SB)…Their 17 stolen bases through their first 12 games of the season are the most in O’s history (since 1954) to open a campaign…The O’s have only been caught stealing once for a 94.4 percent success rate…Jorge Mateo has swiped six of those, tied for the MLB lead with Cleveland’s Myles Straw and Atlanta’s Ronald Acuña Jr., while Cedric Mullins is tied for fourth in MLB with five steals…They are the only pair of teammates with at least five stolen bases apiece and their 11 combined stolen bases are more than 22 MLB teams have this season.

ROSTER MOVES: The O’s selected the contract of Ryan O’Hearn from Triple-A Norfolk prior to today’s game…O’Hearn was slashing .300/.349/.725 (12-for-40) with three doubles, a triple, four homers, 11 runs, 11 RBI, and three walks in nine games with the Tides…In a corresponding move, Anthony Bemboom was designated for assignment.

RISING TIDE: O’s minor league teams are 16-9 to start the season, the third-most collective wins and third-best winning percentage (.640) among MLB affiliates… The Orioles are ranked as the No. 1 farm system by MLB Pipeline…Marks the fourth consecutive time between the preseason and midseason lists that the O’s are in the top spot…Since Pipeline began ranking systems in 2015, only one other organization has claimed the top spot four times in a row, and that was the Padres (2018 pre/mid, 2019 pre/mid)…Baltimore is also ranked as the No. 1 farm system by ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, as well as in Baseball America’s preseason rankings for the first time since the publication began their Organizational Talent Rankings in 1984.

STARTING PITCHER – #19 COLE IRVIN LHP

HOME SWEET HOME: Owned a 5-5 record with a 3.07 ERA (36 ER/105.2 IP) and 78 strikeouts against 22 walks in 17 home starts in 2022, compared to a 4-8 record with a 5.26 ERA (44 ER/75.1 IP) and 50 strikeouts to 14 walks in 13 road starts…Of his career-high-tying 15 quality starts last season, 11 came at home…Has gone 1-1 with a 3.60 ERA (4 ER/10.0 IP) and 11 strikeouts to five walks in two career starts at Oriole Park.

STARTING STRONG: Irvin has allowed four earned runs in 8.0 innings of work in the first four innings this year, compared to five earned runs in 0.2 innings in the fifth…Opposing batters are hitting .286 (4-for-14) against him the first time through the lineup, .250 (4-for-16) the second time, and .667 (4-for-6) the third time.

HIT IT IF YOU CAN: Irvin relied on his four-seam fastball more than any other pitch in 2022, throwing it 36.1 percent of the time…Opposing batters slashed .222/.263/.387 (51-for-230) against his primary pitch, meaning that he recorded more strikeouts (69) by way of the heater than hits allowed (51)…Irvin induced 121 swings and misses on 941 fastballs for a 12.8 percent swing-and-miss rate.

The only seasons in which the Capitals did not reach the 100-point mark from 2014-15 to 2021-22 were the shortened 2019-20 (90 points in 69 games – a 106-point pace) and the 2020-21 (77 points in 56 games – a 112-point pace) seasons.
  • The Capitals have missed the playoffs for just the eighth time since the 1982-83 season (1997, 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2014).

THERE’S NO “I” IN TEAM — The Rays have 10 players with multiple home runs, including Wander Franco (4HR), Brandon Lowe (4HR), Randy Arozarena (3HR), Yandy Díaz (3HR), Isaac Paredes (3HR), Luke Raley (3HR), Harold Ramírez (3HR), Josh Lowe (2HR), Manuel Margot (2HR) and Jose Siri (2HR)…the next closest team is the San Francisco Giants, who have eight players with multiple homers.

Tampa Bay has an MLB-best seven players with 3+ HR…the next closest team is the Los Angeles Dodgers with five.

Tampa Bay has four players with 10+ RBI, including Randy Arozarena (15RBI), Wander Franco (12RBI), Brandon Lowe (10RBI) and Isaac Paredes (10RBI)… the only other team in the majors that has four players with 10+ RBI is the Los Angeles Dodgers (Max Muncy: 14RBI, Will Smith: 12RBI, Trayce Thompson: 11RBI and James Outman: 10 RBI).

ON THE OFFENSIVE — Tampa Bay has homered in each of its first 12 games, becoming one of 11 teams since 1901 to open the season with a streak of 12+ games with a homer…the last to do so was the 2020 New York Yankees, who also homered in 12 straight to open the year.

Tampa Bay’s 92 runs scored are its most ever through 12 games to start the year, ahead of the 1998 Rays (66R)…marks the most runs scored by an MLB team through 12 games since the 2019 Seattle Mariners (98R)

The Rays have hit three more home runs (30) than their total number of runs allowed (27).

BLAST OFF — The Rays have hit a major league-best 30 homers, ahead of Los Angeles-NL (24HR)…the Rays are one of only three teams since 1901 to have 30+ HR in the first 12 games of a season, joining the 2019 Seattle Mariners (32) and 2000 St. Louis Cardinals (31).

The Rays would need three home runs today to match the current MLB mark for most homers through 13 games, done by the 2000 St. Louis Cardinals and 2019 Seattle Mariners (33HR)…Tampa Bay has already registered three 4+ homer games (4/4 at WSH, 4/7 vs. OAK and 4/11 vs. BOS) after recording only one such contest in 2022 (6/21/22 vs. NYY).

NO FLY ZONE — Rays pitchers have allowed just five home runs across 108.0 innings, good for an MLB-best 0.42 HR/9.0IP…the five homers are the fewest allowed through 12 games in franchise history, surpassing the 2014 Rays (7HR)…the fewest home runs allowed through the first 13 games of a season in franchise history is nine by the 2014 club.

Overall, Tampa Bay’s pitching staff has produced an MLB-leading 2.17 ERA, including the best starter ERA (2.11) and third-best bullpen ERA (2.25) behind Milwaukee (1.37) and New York-AL (1.88)

The entire Rays pitching staff ranks among the league in first-pitch strike percentage (1st, 66.0%), fewest runs (1st, 27), fewest HR (1st, 5), fewest hits (T1st, 75), WHIP (2nd, 0.95), fewest walks (T2nd, 28) and SO/BB ratio (3rd, 3.93).

BOSOX IN THE BAY — The Rays play game four of a 13-game season series against Boston today at Tropicana Field…in 2022, Tampa Bay won the season series for the fourth consecutive year, winning 12 of 19 matchups…since 2019, the Rays are 45-25 (.643) against the Red Sox, their second most wins against any opponent in that span behind only Baltimore (46-21).

The Rays have won a franchise-best 12 consecutive home games over the Red Sox since 4/23/22, outscoring Boston, 60-32 (+28), in those games.

Tampa Bay last completed a four-game sweep of Boston from 7/11-14, 2022 at Tropicana Field…a win today would mark the fourth four-game sweep of Boston in club history (also: 4/16-9, 2010 & 8/10-13, 2020).

FOUR IS MORE — Following last night’s 4 RBI performance, Randy Arozarena is tied for third in the majors with 15 RBI…Arozarena joins Houston’s Yordan Alvarez (2G) and Los Angeles-NL Max Muncy (2G) as the only players with multiple 4+ RBI games this season.

IT’S A WANDERFUL LIFE — After going 3-for-5 with three doubles, 2 RBI and two runs in last night’s win, Wander Franco’s 11 extra-base hits are tied with Toronto’s Matt Chapman for the league lead…his three doubles marked a career high and were the most by a Rays hitter since Randy Arozarena on 8/28/22 at Boston (also 3 2B)…Franco is one of three players in the majors this season to record three doubles in a game, joining Pittsburgh’s Connor Joe (4/7 vs. CHW) and Cleveland’s Mike Zunino (4/10 vs. NYY).

TODAY’S STARTER: LHP JEFFREY SPRINGS (2-0, 0.00)
SPRING FEVER — A sixth-year veteran, Springs has not permitted a run while holding opponents to a .075 (3-for-40) average over his first two starts in 2023…is coming off a career year in 2022 that saw him post a 9-5 mark with a 2.46 ERA (135.1IP, 37ER) over 33 games (25 starts)… was acquired by the Rays along with RHP Chris Mazza from Boston on 2/17/21 in exchange for C Ronaldo Hernández and 2B Nick Sogard… signed a four-year, $31 million deal with Tampa Bay through the 2026 season on 1/25/23, including a club option.

ANOTHER DAY AT THE OFFICE — Crafted 7.0 scoreless frames while holding Oakland to three hits in Tampa Bay’s 11-0 win over the Athletics on 4/8 (7.0IP, 3H, 0R, 3BB, 7SO)…his 7.0 innings marked a career high… received a career-high nine runs of support in the outing (prev. 6R, 2x, last 9/3/22 vs. TOR)…has won back-to-back starts for the third time in his career, including the first since 9/13-18, 2022.

SPRINGS HAS SPRUNG — Springs’ 13.0 scoreless inning streak is tied for the third-longest by a Rays starting pitcher to open a season in club history, trailing only Mark Hendrickson (14.0IP, 2006) and Matt Moore (13.1IP, 2013)…Springs’ streak is also tied for ninth-longest by any pitcher to begin a season in Rays history (Elias).

BEANTOWN RUNDOWN — Has gone 0-2 with a 3.80 ERA (23.2IP, 10ER) across 12 career appearances (4 starts) against Boston…over his last two starts against the Red Sox (9/7/22 & 10/4/22), Springs has pitched to a 1.50 ERA (6.0IP, 1ER) while holding Boston hitters to a .143 average (3-for-21).

vs. AL EAST — Springs is 7-4 with a 2.85 ERA (104.1IP, 33ER), 35 walks and 135 strikeouts in 50 career outings (12 starts) against AL East opponents, including 4-3 with a 2.93 ERA (58.1IP, 19ER) in his 12 starts opposite the division.

Over his last five starts against division rivals since 9/2/22, Springs is 2-1 with a 1.59 ERA (22.2IP, 4ER), holding opposing hitters to a .159/.258/.259 (16-for-85) clip with zero homers in that stretch.

HOME COOKING — Has turned in a 5-2 record with a 1.98 ERA (68.1IP, 15ER) in 13 starts at Tropicana Field since the beginning of 2022, the 4thbest home ERA in the AL in that span (min. 10 home starts).

Springs has permitted three or fewer earned runs in each of his first 13 starts at Tropicana Field since joining the Rays…this includes eight home starts allowing one or zero earned runs.

SWING AND A MISS—Springs has registered a 36.8 pct. whiff rate this season, fourth highest among all qualifying pitchers behind TEX Jacob DeGrom (39.9%), MIN Pablo Lopez (37.1%) and ATL Spencer Strider (37.0%)

Has also produced a 47.2 pct. whiff rate on his changeup this season, fifth-best in MLB (min. 50 changeups thrown)…Springs has used his changeup 35.9 pct. of the time, the highest clip in the AL ahead of NYY Ron Marinaccio (35.8 pct.) (min. 100 total pitches thrown).

Jason Robertson mustered up another three-point performance to climb multiple elite lists and achieve an NHL-first during a Stars victory.

ISLANDERS LOCK UP NHL’S FINAL BERTH OF THE 2023 STANLEY CUP PLAYOFFS
The Islanders (42-31-9, 93 points) defeated the Canadiens to capture their fourth straight win at UBS Arena and clinch the NHL’s 16th and final berth of the 2023 Stanley Cup Playoffs. New York contested its final game of the 2022-23 season and awaits the result of Florida’s game against Carolina on April 13 to determine its First Round opponent.

Brock Nelson (2-0—2) netted his eighth multi-goal game of the season30th of his career and eighth game-winning goal of 2022-23. The veteran of 10 NHL seasons (all w/ NYI) has played a pivotal role in the postseason for the Islanders, potting 9-6—15 in 13 career potential series-clinching games – his 0.69 goals-per-game rate in such contests ranks second in franchise history (min. 10 GP) behind Mike Bossy (0.70)

New York’s all-time postseason home winning percentage of .644 is the third highest in League history (min. 100 GP) behind Montreal (.656 W%) and Edmonton (.646 W%).

ROBERTSON, HEISKANEN CLIMB ELITE LISTS IN STARS VICTORY
Jason Robertson (0-3—3) and Miro Heiskanen (0-2—2) both put up multi-point performances to climb elite lists as the Stars (46-21-14, 106 points) defeated the Blues and leapfrogged the idle Avalanche (49-24-7, 105 points) for first place in the Central Division standings.

* Robertson, who boosted his 2022-23 totals to 46-63—109 and surpassed Dino Ciccarelli (55-51—106 in 1981-82) for the second-most points in a season by a Stars/North Stars player, recorded his 13th three-point outing of the season. He tied Neal Broten and Bobby Smith (both w/ 13 GP in 1981-82) for the second-most three-point games in a campaign in franchise history behind only Ciccarelli (15 GP in 1981-82).

* Meanwhile, Heiskanen (11-62—73) established a Stars/North Stars record for the most assists in a season by a defenseman, surpassing Craig Hartsburg (17-60—77 in 1981-82). Heiskanen also moved into a tie with Brad Maxwell (19-54—73 in 1983-84) for the franchise’s second-highest point total in a season by a blueliner, behind only Hartsburg (1981-82).

TONS TO BE DECIDED AS NHL ENTERS PIVOTAL 15-GAME THURSDAY
With just two more nights and 17 games of regular-season action left in 2022-23, the NHL enters a loaded 15-game slate still looking to determine seven of eight First Round matchups and three division winners. From the 7 p.m. ET starts to ESPN’s Golden Knights-Kraken broadcast at 10:30 p.m. ET, there will be games that impact playoff positioning from start to finish Thursday.

METROPOLITAN, CENTRAL AND PACIFIC DIVISION CROWNS STILL UP FOR GRABS
The 2023 Presidents’ Trophy-winning Bruins are the only team to have clinched their division thus far, but the Metropolitan, Central and Pacific Division crowns are still up for grabs along with the Western Conference title.

 * The Hurricanes (51-21-9, 111 points) control their own destiny – a win in any fashion will secure them the Metropolitan Division title. They could also end the season as the division’s No. 1 seed if they get one point AND the Devils lose to the Capitals in any fashion, OR if the Devils lose in regulation.

* The Devils (51-22-8, 110 points), on the other hand, can grab the Metropolitan Division title if they defeat the Capitals in any fashion AND the Hurricanes lose to the Panthers in any fashion, OR if they get one point vs. the Capitals AND the Hurricanes lose to the Panthers in regulation.

* Should Vegas (50-22-9, 109) salvage at least one point from its matchup Thursday, it will capture its third division title in the franchise’s six-year history. The Golden Knights would clinch No. 1 in the Pacific if the Oilers lose to the Sharks in any fashion. The second-place Oilers (49-23-9, 107 points) also have a shot through the regulation wins tiebreaker if they win in any fashion and the Golden Knights lose in regulation. The winner of the Pacific Division will also claim top spot in the Western Conference.

* The Central Division has been a three-team race for months, with Colorado, Dallas and Minnesota all holding the top seed at some point since April 1. Entering play today, it will all come down to the defending champion Avalanche (49-24-7, 105 points), who have two games remaining, and the Stars (46-21-14, 106 points), who conclude their season tonight. Colorado will look to claim their division title for three consecutive seasons for the first time since a nine-season run from 1994-95 to 2002-03, while the Stars will look to finish the campaign as their division’s top seed for the first time in seven years (2015-16 Central Division).

* The Avalanche will clinch the Central Division if they defeat the Jets in any fashion AND the Stars lose to the Blues in regulation. For the Stars, they will clinch the Central Division if they defeat the Blues in any fashion AND the Avalanche lose to the Jets in any fashion, OR if they get one point vs. the Blues AND the Avalanche lose to the Jets in regulation.

* Should none of the scenarios presented above materialize, the battle for the Central Division crown will extend to the final day of the season Friday, when the Avalanche head to Nashville.

WHO WILL FACE OFF IN THE 2023 FIRST ROUND?

Eight First Round matchups will commence next week, but for seven of those series, the question remains: which teams will be facing off against one another? With just two days remaining in the regular season, the only confirmed matchup is the Maple Leafs-Lightning. There are still 10 seeds that could be claimed by two or more different teams heading into Thursday.

* Two of tonight’s games could be First Round matchups once the regular-season dust settles: Carolina-Florida (7 p.m. ET on BSSO, BSFL, TVAS) and Vegas-Seattle (10:30 p.m. ET on ESPN).

* A preview of a potential First Round matchup between the two newest NHL franchises – the Golden Knights and Kraken – will air at 10:30 p.m. ET as the second half of an ESPN doubleheader. Seattle will start their postseason in Vegas if they finish third in the Pacific Division and the Golden Knights finish as the division’s No. 2 seed.

* The Hurricanes have a number of potential opponents in the opening round of the 2023 postseason, including the Panthers, should the club finish atop the Metropolitan Division. Carolina and Florida, who have the second- and fifth-most regular-season wins since the start of the 2021-22 season, have never met in a playoff series. Should Carolina finish No. 2, it would tee up the second straight postseason to feature the Hurricanes facing off against the Rangers after the two clubs clashed in the 2022 Second Round and ended in a New York Game 7 victory. All-time, the Hurricanes and Rangers have split their two playoff series meetings. The Hurricanes could also end up facing the Islanders for the second time (4-0 W in 2019 R2).

* The Devils, who have the longest gap between playoff appearances among teams that have clinched so far in 2023 (four years), could face the Rangers or Panthers in the opening round. Both the Rangers and Panthers would mark the franchise’s first playoff series against that opponent since 2012, when New Jersey triumphed over Florida in the Conference Quarterfinals via a double overtime goal by Adam Henrique before facing New York in the Conference Finals – where Henrique once again clinched the series in the extra frame but this time in Game 6.
