Boxing Preview: Rene “Chulo” Santiago (10-3-0, 7 KOs) vs Carlos “Arañita” Ortega (15-6-3, 6 KOs)

FRIDAY: Rene Santiago-Carlos Ortega Junior Flyweight Showdown to Stream LIVE and Exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ – Streaming action from Panama City begins at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT

Puerto Rican junior flyweight Rene “Chulo” Santiago will defend his WBO Latino title in a 10-round main event this Friday, April 14 against hometown hero Carlos “Arañita” Ortega at Coliseo de Combates in Panama City, Panama.

Santiago-Ortega and undercard bouts will stream live and exclusively in the U.S. on ESPN+ starting at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT. Santiago (10-3, 7 KOs) is a 31-year-old contender who debuted as a pro in 2014. He captured his first regional title in January 2020 with a decision win over countryman Israel Vazquez. Following a near two-year layoff, he defeated Jose Calderon via second-round TKO and suffered his third pro loss via unanimous decision against Yudel Reyes in April 2022. Santiago is coming off a controversial DQ win over undefeated contender Gerardo Zapata last December. Ortega (15-6-3, 6 KOs), whose nickname means “Little Spider,” is a 14-year pro. He stopped Victor Berrio in the second-round of their May 2022 matchup.

In other streaming action from Panama City:

Derrieck Cuevas (24-1-1, 16 KOs), the fighting pride of Guaynabo, Puerto Rico, will defend his WBA Fedecentro junior middleweight title in a 10-round battle against Cuba’s Damian Rodriguez (13-1, 7 KOs). The 28-year-old Cuevas is coming off a second-round TKO against Esneiker Correa last December, while Rodriguez returns from a three-plus-year layoff.

In a battle of Central American light heavyweights, Panama’s Yunior “Bronco Man” Menendez (6-0, 5 KOs) and Costa Rica’s Juan Carlos Chavarria (6-1, 6 KOs) collide in an eight-rounder for the vacant WBC Fecarbox title.

Puerto Rican super middleweight knockout artist Luis J Rodriguez Fernandez (11-0, 11 KOs) looks to make hit 12 for 12 versus Ecuador’s Roger Guerrero (17-3-1, 10 KOs) in a 10-rounder.

NWSL Match Preview: San Diego Wave FC (2-0-0) at OL Reign (1-1-0)

Lumen Field | Seattle, Washington – Saturday, April 15 at 10:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

OL Reign forward Bethany Balcer got off the mark last week, scoring her side’s second goal in a 2-0 win over Gotham FC that also saw midfielder Jess Fishlock find the back of the net. The pair are now inches away from a set of milestones, with Fishlock one goal away from 40 regular season goals—all with OL Reign—which would make her the ninth player in NWSL history to reach that mark. Meanwhile, Balcer is sitting on 23 goals and is just two away from hitting 25, also having scored all 23 goals with OL Reign. One additional milestone to look for is in the assist category for Fishlock. She now sits on 24 assists—all with OL Reign—and is just one away from becoming just the fifth player in NWSL history to register 25 assists.

San Diego forwards Alex Morgan and Jaedyn Shaw have already begun to do in 2023 what they spent the majority of 2022 doing—tearing up opposition defenses and finding the back of the net. Morgan has already scored three goals in two games to sit second in the league’s scoring charts, while Shaw’s two goals in two games have her T-3rd with Washington’s Ashley Hatch in the same category. Interestingly, neither Morgan nor Shaw are near the top of the charts in shots or shots on goal, making the pair one of the more efficient across the league. Morgan has already converted both of her spot kick attempts on the year as well.

Match facts: OL Reign and San Diego Wave FC round out a five-game Saturday across the NWSL, potentially saving the best matchup for last as the two Western-based powerhouses collide at Lumen Field. San Diego is one of just two teams (Portland) to have won both opening contests, while OL Reign comes in off the back of their first win of the season having dropped their opening contest against Washington.

Failing to score in their opening encounter, it’s possible that the Reign needed just a little extra time to put the wheels in motion as was evidenced by their 2-0 win over Gotham FC on April 1. Balcer, who got off the mark last week with her first goal of the season, currently sits T-2 in the league in shots (7) and shots on goal (4), proving that the Reign have no problem moving forward and threatening in attack. Instead, one of the greater challenges will be limiting a prolific San Diego attack while also keeping shape and finding their own way forward on Saturday.

The Wave will enter Saturday night with nothing but confidence after back-to-back wins over Chicago and North Carolina to start the year, scoring three goals in each of those two games. Only Portland (8) has scored more goals in the opening pair of contests, though San Diego will face the same challenge as the Reign in terms of both finding a way forward and yet limiting the host’s attacking options via Balcer, Rose Lavelle, and many others. Morgan and Shaw will be two of the main threats going forward, with Morgan’s brace against North Carolina moving her alone into third place in the NWSL’s all-time regular season scoring table (56). Only Sam Kerr (77), Christine Sinclair (59), and Lynn Williams (58) have more regular season goals.

Also plenty familiar with each other, these two teams met four times across Challenge Cup and regular season action last year with San Diego failing to beat the Reign in any of those four contests. In the regular season, Rose Lavelle’s goal in a late May encounter was good enough to lift the Reign over the Wave, 1-0, at Lumen Field, while just two weeks later the pair dueled to a 1-1 draw with Morgan and Fishlock on the scoresheet that day.

NWSL Match Preview: Racing Louisville FC (0-0-2) at Angel City FC ( 1-1-0)

BMO Stadium | Los Angeles, California – Saturday, April 15 at 10:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

Angel City forwards Claire EmslieKatie Johnson, and Alyssa Thompson have all gotten off the mark in the 2023 season thus far, with Thompson scoring her first NWSL goal in her league debut to become the 4thyoungest player to tally in a league game. Thompson’s goal came in Angel City’s loss to open the year, while Emslie’s goal against Orlando last week was followed up by Johnson’s late match-winner in the 10th minute of added time in the second half. Emslie is also one of the league’s only players to have both scored and assisted a goal in just the two games played thus far.

Racing Louisville failed to score in its season-opening draw with Houston, and goals last week came from two players outside their forward line as defender Abby Erceg helped Louisville pull one back with a goal from a corner kick. Then, a few minutes later, midfielder Ary Borges scored a goal of the year contender from just outside the box that stood good enough to help the side earn a second consecutive draw. In goal, goalkeeper Katie Lund has already begun to continue her incredible form of last season, recording seven saves against Houston in a first clean sheet on the year and adding another three against Washington the following week to put her at second in the league in that category.

Match facts: Saturday night’s action rolls on as Angel City FC returns to BMO Stadium to host Racing Louisville FC in a promising encounter that features two new-look, ambitious sides. Angel City has won one and lost one coming in, while Louisville has both failed to win and yet managed to avoid defeat in their two games to date, setting up an intriguing matchup in Los Angeles.

Angel City showed out in front of a boisterous crowd at BMO Stadium in Week 1 and forward Alyssa Thompson’s goal gave the crowd something to go crazy about with her league debut goal to open the scoring. However, Gotham completed their own comeback with two goals in 10 minutes in the second half to overthrow Angel City’s lead and inflict a defeat to the hosts. However, resolve was shown in Week 2 as forward Claire Emslie opened the scoring against Orlando only for Pride forward Messiah Bright to equalize minutes into the second half. Undeterred, Angel City’s fight to the end paid off as forward Katie Johnson bundled the ball over the line in what was the 100th minute of time played—the latest regular season goal in NWSL history—to help her side earn a marathon three points.

On the other side, Racing Louisville FC has come out strong under head coach Kim Björkegren’s second campaign making a few key additions to help the side push for a playoff run in 2023. Two of those additions—Erceg and Ary Borges—were on the scoresheet against Washington in the club’s last time out, and attacking threats Wang Shuang and Uchenna Kanu have seen plenty of the ball in the first two games to suggest they will contribute throughout the year, though Kanu’s action last match was limited to just 42 minutes due to injury. Regardless, Louisville will have every reason to believe that their mix of familiar faces and new talent will be able to go into Los Angeles and potentially overcome this Angel City side.

The two teams have only ever met twice in NWSL action with results split and favoring the away side on both occasions. In June of last year, Angel City defeated Louisville, 3-2, at Lynn Family Stadium with goals from Christen Press and Savannah McCaskill. However, Racing got their revenge in late September in Los Angeles as all of Kirsten Davis, Alex Chidiac, and Emina Ekic contributed goals in a 3-1 win.

NWSL Match Preview: Kansas City Current (0-2-0) at Chicago Red Stars (0-2-0)

SeatGeek Stadium | Bridgeview, Illinois – Saturday, April 15 at 8:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

Chicago Red Stars forward Mallory Swanson suffered a long-term injury over the international break and underwent a surgery on a torn patella tendon. This leaves Chicago with a hole in their attack, one that draftee Penelope Hocking and attacking standout Yuki Nagasato will aim to help fill. In Chicago’s opener at San Diego, Nagasato scored her 19th career NWSL goal (17th with Chicago) and will aim to help the Red Stars carry on against a winless Kansas City team on Saturday night.

The Current are stacked with firepower but have yet to properly connect their pieces, with forward CeCe Kizerscoring the lone goal across their two regular season games this season. Goalkeeper AD Franch, though having conceded five goals in two games, has been plenty involved on the year with eight saves already. That puts her nine away from 400 career regular season saves. Also of note is Kansas City’s willingness to put faith in their draftees, as the Current are the only club to have started two draft picks in both regular season games, with forward Michelle Cooper and defender Gabby Robinson both in the starting XIs.

Match facts: Neither the Chicago Red Stars nor the Kansas City Current have picked up a point on the year so far and are two of only three teams (Orlando) in that category. However, that will change come Saturday night’s matchup at SeatGeek Stadium with at least one of the two sides earning at least a first point this season.

First, everyone is wishing Chicago forward Mallory Swanson a speedy recovery after her injury with the U.S. Women’s National Team over the international break. Swanson will be an obvious miss for the Red Stars with the attacking talent leading in shots and shots on goal as well as helping pace the league in those categories (shots – 3rd; shots on goal – T-2nd). This leaves Nagasato, Hocking, and the likes of Ava Cook, Sarah Griffith, and others to help fill the void. One bright spot for Chicago over the break was the debut of midfielder Julia Bianchi, though, who joined the club after two years with Brazilian side Palmeiras. Bianchi scored in her debut—a 5-2 friendly loss to the Mexico Women’s National Team—directly from a corner kick in the 39th minute.

Meanwhile, Kansas City didn’t seem to gel in their season-opening loss at North Carolina and were unfortunate in timing in meeting a rolling Portland side at the beginning of April for their second loss. However, another road trip to Chicago won’t be without its challenges as the Current seek a first result. The club boasts plenty of players with the ability to find the back of the net, with Kizer, fellow forward Kristen Hamilton, and midfielders Lo’eau LaBonta, Vanessa DiBernardo, and Debinha all boasting more than 10 regular season goals. That experience coupled with the arrival of the likes of draftee Michelle Cooper and forward Mimmi Larsson would suggest that, at least in due time, Kansas City will find their own momentum.

Though both teams underwent a bit of roster reconstruction in the offseason, their four meetings in all competitions last year mean they are plenty familiar with each other. The Red Stars fought their way to a point in the first regular season meeting in a 2-2 draw in June. But, the last time these two teams met at SeatGeek Stadium (September 2022), Chicago ended Kansas City’s 13-game unbeaten streak which was the second-longest such streak in NWSL history with a 4-0 win.

NWSL Match Preview: NJ/NY Gotham FC (1-1-0) at Orlando Pride (0-2-0)

Exploria Stadium | Orlando, Florida – Saturday, April 15 at 7:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

Orlando Pride forward Messiah Bright has scored the lone goal of the Pride’s season so far, an equalizer in the second half of a 2-1 loss to Angel City that saw her also open her NWSL account. Bright was Orlando’s second round draft pick and No. 21 overall out of TCU, and was signed to a three-year deal before the beginning of the regular season. Fans will also be eagerly awaiting the full return of Brazilian legend Marta, whose 2022 season was wiped out by injury. The attacker went 53 minutes in the loss to Portland to start the year and did not feature against Angel City.

Gotham FC forwards Midge Purce and Lynn Williams have already shown flashes of being a dangerous duo up top, with their two goals lifting Gotham over Angel City in Week 1. Though neither were able to get on the scoresheet in the club’s most recent outing against OL Reign, their movement and ability to draw defenders to the ball and create space for other runners could prove a dangerous tactic throughout the season. Goalkeeper Abby Smith will be one to watch as the year rolls on as well. Smith helped Gotham to three points in Week 1 and still made three saves in the club’s loss to the Reign.

Match facts: The Orlando Pride host NJ/NY Gotham FC at Exploria Stadium for the third game of Saturday’s action and the third game of each team’s season to date. Orlando, who dropped both of their opening contests to Portland (4-0) and Angel City (2-1) will look to right the ship in its second straight home game, while Gotham FC aims to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to OL Reign in its home opener before the international break.

Orlando has not had an ideal start to the regular season, falling 4-0 to Portland in the season opener as the side attempted to gel together quickly. However, more promising signs followed in their 2-1 loss to Angel City the week after, including rookie attacker Messiah Bright’s first NWSL goal to equalize against the visitors. A resolute performance that saw the Pride attempt to stack up statistically to Angel City was not enough, though, with forward Katie Johnson sealing the victory for the Los Angeles-based side in the 10th minute of added time in the second half.

Gotham, meanwhile, have been more than entertaining to watch despite their split results to start the year. Playing the spoiler in their season opener, goals from forwards Midge Purce and Lynn Williams were enough to complete the comeback and defeat Angel City 2-1 to start the year. However, Gotham’s home opener in front of 7,500-plus fans at Red Bull Arena went almost entirely the way of OL Reign as their 2-0 win saw their defense limit Gotham to zero shots on goal despite duels, tackles, and possession all falling relatively even.

The pair met twice in the Challenge Cup group stage last year, with Gotham defeating Orlando in Orlando, 1-0, in late March before a 1-1 draw toward the end of April. Gotham then walloped Orlando, 3-0, at the beginning of May in back-to-back contests against the Pride (one Challenge Cup, one regular season). However, Orlando did get the better of Gotham in a 2-1 win in August 2022 as Ally Watt’s 73rd minute strike was enough to separate the two sides.

NWSL Match Preview: Washington Spirit (1-0-1) at North Carolina Courage (1-1-0)

WakeMed Soccer Park | Cary, North Carolina – Saturday, April 15 at 7:00 PM ET

Players to watch:

North Carolina forwards Mille Gejl and Kerolin have provided the only two goals scored for their side in the season so far, and though Kerolin’s was a consolation in the club’s 3-1 loss to San Diego in Week 2, Gejl’s was good enough to be a winner from the debutant against Kansas City in the opening week of the regular season. Narumi Miura, who was also making her debut in that game, registered the assist. Courage goalkeeper Casey Murphy earned her 18th Courage shutout that game, becoming the club’s all-time leader in that category.

After last season fell by the wayside, it’s been an encouraging start to the year with Washington scoring three goals in two games as forwards Ashley Hatch (2) and Trinity Rodman (1) have gotten up and running. In Week 1, Rodman pulled up from 20+ yards out and ripped a low drive that became the match-winning goal against OL Reign in a 1-0 victory. Then, in a 2-2 draw against Louisville the next week, Hatch’s double helped stave off a push from the hosts to help earn a point. Hatch is also the club’s all-time leading goalscorer with 32 goals.

Match facts: The North Carolina Courage host the Washington Spirit at WakeMed Soccer Park in a rematch of the 2022 Challenge Cup Final, though North Carolina especially has a different look to them in 2023. North Carolina has seen many of the regular names in last year’s starting XI depart, but in exchange, have welcomed players like Emily Fox, Tyler Lussi, Gejl, Narumi, and more to the fold. Meanwhile, the Spirit are propelled in attack by familiar faces Hatch and Rodman, who are the only two players on their roster to have more than 10 all-time regular season goals.

A much changed North Carolina has plenty of potential, though, and head coach Sean Nahas will be looking to have his side bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to San Diego last weekend. A gritty win in Week 1 over the Current showed what this side is capable of, but as puzzle pieces begin to fall into place the Courage will want to take advantage of as many early point opportunities as possible.

Washington also has a midweek Challenge Cup match ahead of them, but early results against OL Reign and Racing Louisville have helped the side settle into the year nicely. With the good that Rodman’s and Hatch’s goals have provided, there is one blemish the Spirit will need to adjust to heading into the week—the red card shown to Paige Metayer in last week’s draw against Louisville. Metayer was shown two yellow cards for challenges just a few minutes apart and will miss the trip to Cary.

In 2022, this fixture brought goals and more goals as only one game saw the two teams fail to score four or more goals in five meetings. Both Challenge Cup group games were 2-2 draws with North Carolina lifting the Challenge Cup trophy after a hard-fought 2-1 win over Washington in early May. Then in the regular season, North Carolina defeated the Spirit 3-2 in Washington in mid-June before a six-goal thriller saw the clubs produce a 3-3 draw at WakeMed Soccer Park toward the end of July.

NWSL Match Preview: Houston Dash (1-0-1) at Portland Thorns FC (2-0-0)

Providence Park | Portland, Oregon – Friday, April 14 at 10:30 PM ET

Players to watch:

Portland forward Sophia Smith has already kicked off her 2023 season with a bang, scoring four of Portland’s eight goals across two games this year including a hat-trick in the club’s last time out against the Kansas City Current. Portland’s fire power also includes goals from Crystal DunnHina SugitaMorgan Weaver, and Michele Vasconcelos, with Vasconcelos joining the list of regular season scorers for the first time since 2019. Despite conceding the one goal against Kansas City to start April, goalkeeper Bella Bixby recorded her 19thcareer regular-season shutout against the Pride in Week 1 for the Thorns.

After a scoreless draw in their opening match, the Houston Dash were propelled to victory after goals from María Sánchez and newcomer Diana Ordóñez in a 2-1 win over Chicago in their last game. The goals from the Mexican duo were the first to be scored by Mexican National Team teammates in the same game, and for Ordóñez, the goal was her first in Houston colors. The club did concede a goal to Chicago, but its shutout draw against Louisville in Week 1 was goalkeeper Jane Campbell’s 23rd career clean sheet in the regular season.

Match facts: The NWSL returns to action on Friday night after April’s international break, and Portland Thorns FC hosts the Houston Dash at Providence Park as both clubs look to extend their respective winning streaks. Portland comes in seeking a third consecutive win to start the year, while Houston is aiming for a second consecutive win and third game unbeaten after a draw to start the year.

It’s no secret that Portland has come out hot from the gates, scoring a remarkable eight goals in its first two contests including a 4-1 win against the Kansas City Current in Week 2, a rematch of the 2022 NWSL Championship. Smith’s hat-trick against Kansas City was not only the first of the 2023 season, but it also made her the youngest player (22 years, 8 months) to reach the milestone of 25 regular season goals (Mallory Swanson – 24 years, 5 months) as well as the quickest, doing it in 41 games (Christen Press – 42 games). Two more milestones to look for now will be for goalkeeper Bella Bixby, whose next clean sheet will be her 20h in the regular season putting her on track to be the quickest to that number. In addition, should forward Christine Sinclair score, it will be her 60th regular season goal. Only Sam Kerr will have scored more, and no one has scored more for one club.

For Houston, back-to-back encouraging performances have seen them pick up four points in two games. A stingy scoreless draw against Louisville still provided plenty of action, but it was a victory over Chicago that helped carry momentum over and through the international break. This will also be the first meeting between new head coaches Sam Laity (HOU) and Mike Norris (POR), though the pair will be familiar with each other after Laity’s time with OL Reign and Norris with the Thorns prior to his appointment as Head Coach.

In recent years, Portland and Houston have split the series fairly evenly. Last year, Portland went to Houston and picked up a 4-0 win against the Dash in June. However, a few weeks prior, the Dash claimed a 2-0 victory over the Thorns in Portland. In fact, Portland has not beaten Houston in Portland since September 2019, with the only edge Portland’s way coming via a 2-2 draw in the 2021 Women’s ICC semifinals where the Thorns advanced on penalties.

Michael Amadio notched three points (2-1—3) as the Vegas Golden Knights (50-22-9) took down the Seattle Kraken (46-27-8), 4-1, on Tuesday night at T-Mobile Arena. Amadio opened scoring for Vegas five minutes into the opening period. Four minutes later, Yanni Gourde tied the game at 1-1. In the middle frame, Amadio scored his second of the night to put the Golden Knights ahead, 2-1. Reilly Smith found the back of the net with six minutes remaining in the period, extending Vegas’ lead to 3-1. In the third period, Jonathan Marchessault scored a power-play goal to make it 4-1. The Golden Knights locked down defensively and skated to the 4-1 win.

The Golden Knights matched the franchise record for single-season points (109) after defeating Seattle on Tuesday and enter the regular-season finale on Thursday just one win shy of matching the franchise record (51).

Dancing Knights
For the fifth time in six seasons, the Golden Knights have clinched a berth in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With Nashville’s loss to Pittsburgh on Mar. 30, Vegas became the first team in the Pacific Division and the Western Conference to have its postseason spot secured.

The Vegas Golden Knights have the edge in regular season play against the Seattle Kraken of 6-1-0 since the newest club joined the NHL. Vegas will close out its regular season facing Seattle in a home-and-home matchup, after winning the first game at T-Mobile Arena on Tuesday and concluding on Thursday at Climate Pledge Arena.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
• Tonight’s matchup is the final of three games the Kraken will play against the Golden Knights this season and the second time the two teams are playing in Seattle this year.

• Seattle has a 13-10-2 record against Pacific Division opponents this season and have beaten each of their division rivals at least once.

• Tuesday’s and tonight’s game marks the third time this season that the Kraken are playing the same opponent in consecutive games after facing Dallas on March 11 and 13 and then Nashville on March 23 and 25.

• Oliver Bjorkstrand became the Kraken’s sixth 20-goal scorer this season with a goal in the Kraken’s game on April 10 at Arizona. It marks the fourth time in his career that he has scored 20 or more goals in a season. The Kraken’s six 20-goal scorers were tied with Dallas, New Jersey, Ottawa, Pittsburgh and Toronto for the most in the NHL entering play Wednesday.

• Since Feb. 14, the Kraken have gone 67-for-76 on the penalty kill. Their 88.2 percent success rate on the penalty kill during that span was the third-best mark in the league entering play Wednesday.

• With one game remaining in the regular season, nine Kraken skaters have set or tied their career highs in goals, assists and points: Will Borgen, Vince Dunn, Morgan Geekie, Adam Larsson, Jared McCann, Jamie Oleksiak, Daniel Sprong, Brandon Tanev and Eeli Tolvanen. McCann’s next game played will be his 79th of the season, setting a career high.

• With the Kraken’s four-goal outing in their game on March 3 against Columbus, they surpassed their goal total from all of last season in 20 fewer games. Seattle has scored 288 goals in 81 games this season compared to 213 goals in 2021-22. The team’s 288 goals this season were the third-most in the NHL entering play Wednesday.

SECOND TIME AROUND
• Tonight’s game against Vegas marks the Kraken’s final game of the regular season.

• Even with one game remaining, the Kraken have increased their win total from last season to this season by 19 and their point total by 40. Entering play Wednesday, only the New Jersey Devils have a larger win (24) and point (46) improvement from last season to this season.

• The team has scored 75 more goals, allowed 35 fewer goals, improved their goals scored per game by 0.96 and have allowed 0.39 fewer goals per game.

• The Kraken finished the 2021-22 season ranked 30th in the NHL with 60 points and entered play Wednesday ranked 12th in the NHL with 100 points. The team’s 18-spot jump in the standings is second to only New Jersey (25) as the best year-over-year improvement in the league.
