MLS Preview: New England Revolution (5-1-1) at Columbus Crew SC (4-2-1)

0

The last four gatherings between the Columbus Team SC and the New England Revolution have finished in draws. Only three matches in MLS history have been played five consecutive draws. One of those matches was between the Crew and Chicago Fire in 2008-09, and the other was between the Revolution and Portland Timbers in 2016-2022, as well as Dallas and Houston in 2017-18.

Columbus has outscored opponents by 12 to 1 in each of its three victories. The plus-11 goal difference is the best it has been in a single regular season over a three-match stretch, and the 12 goals are the most in club history (August 1998)

Saturday’s 4-0 victory over the CF Montreal Impact was the New England Revolution’s fifth victory in seven games to begin the season (D1 L1). With a record of W6 D1 L0 to begin the 2005 season, this is only the second time in club history that New England has won five of its first seven games.

Lucas Zelarayan endeavored four shots, scoring once, and set up four opportunities for partners in the Columbus Group SC’s success over D. C. Joined on Saturday. Since joining the MLS in 2020, Zelarayan has attempted 218 shots and created 204 chances for teammates in regular season play. He is the only player with 200 of each since joining.

Giacomo Vrioni scored New England’s fourth goal on Saturday against the CF Montreal Impact after receiving a goal kick from Djorde Petrovic. Petrovic was the first Revolution goalkeeper since Matt Reis in 2011 against Sporting Kansas City to record a primary assist in an MLS match.

MLS Preview: Colorado Rapids (1-3-3) at Charlotte FC (1-4-2)

0

The previous meeting between Charlotte FC and the Colorado Rapids ended in a scoreless draw in Commerce City in April 2022. The draw was Charlotte FC’s first away point in Quite a while and its just attract its initial 15 association games.

A 3-1 defeat at Real Salt Lake on Saturday brought an end to Charlotte FC’s three-match unbeaten streak (W1 D2). Charlotte FC gets back where its lost just two of its last six matches (W2 D2) tracing all the way back to the furthest limit of last season.

Saturday, the Colorado Rapids defeated the Kansas City Chiefs 1-0, their first victory of the season, thanks to their third goal of the campaign. Colorado is the fourth team in MLS history to score three or fewer goals in its first seven matches; Sporting Kansas City, the team Colorado defeated, is one of only two teams to score less than two goals.

Saturday’s goal by Karol Swiderski against Real Salt Lake was Charlotte FC’s first goal this season from outside the box. Swiderski is credited with six of the 17 shots that Charlotte FC has taken from outside the box this season, which is the highest percentage in the MLS.

Darren Yapi provided the assist for Diego Rubio, who scored Colorado’s lone goal against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday. It was the primary objective the Colorado Rapids have scored since September that was not helped by Michael Barrios (had helped past four).

Club Recalls Right-Handed Pitcher Kutter Crawford from Triple-A Worcester

BOSTON, MA—The Boston Red Sox today placed right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly on the 15-Day Injured List due to right elbow inflammation. To fill Kelly’s spot on the active roster, the club recalled right-handed pitcher Kutter Crawford from Triple-A Worcester.

Chief Baseball Officer Chaim Bloom made the announcement.

Kelly, 28, allowed two runs in 0.2 innings last night against the Tampa Bay Rays before exiting the game. Entering last night, the right-hander had allowed just one run across his first five outings of the season, posting a 1.35 ERA (1 ER/6.2 IP) over the span. Signed by the Red Sox as a minor league free agent on December 21, 2020, Kelly is 1-0 with a 3.86 ERA (9 ER/21.0 IP) over 19 career relief appearances with Boston (2022-23).

The right-hander has gone 1-1 with an 8.00 ERA (8 ER/9.0 IP) over two starts this season, most recently allowing only one run in 5.0 innings Sunday in Detroit. Selected by the Red Sox in the 16th round of the 2017 MLB First-Year Player Draft out of Florida Gulf Coast University, Crawford owns a 6.11 ERA (62 ER/88.1 IP) in 25 career appearances (15 starts) with Boston (2021-23).

A’s claim LHP Richard Lovelady off waivers from Atlanta

OAKLAND, Calif. — The Oakland A’s claimed left-handed pitcher Richard Lovelady off waivers from Atlanta and assigned him to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. To clear space on the 40-man roster, the A’s transferred right-handed pitcher Freddy Tarnok to the 60-day injured list.

Lovelady appeared in four games for Triple-A Gwinnett in the Braves organization this season, allowing four runs in 5.0 innings while striking out four and walking two batters. He was originally selected by Kansas City in the 10th round of the 2016 First-Year Player Draft. The 27-year-old left-handed pitcher made his Major League debut in 2019 with Kansas City and is 2-3 with a 5.62 ERA in 46 career games in parts of three seasons with the Royals (2019-21). He was traded to the Braves for cash considerations on March 30, 2023.

Tarnok was placed on the 15-day IL on March 30 with a strained right shoulder. He allowed one run in 5.0 innings across two outings for the A’s this spring, striking out three and walking two.

NEW YORK, NY – The Minnesota Twins announced today that they have placed infielder Kyle Farmer on the 10-day Injured List with a facial laceration.

Farmer, 32, sustained the injury in the fourth inning of yesterday’s game against the Chicago White Sox at Target Field, after being struck by a pitch. He has hit .226 (7-for-31) with one double, one home run, five RBI, two walks and six runs scored in 11 games for the Twins this season.

NFL Enters Next Era of Helmet Safety with Advent of Quarterback-Specific Helmet

0

NFL impact data have driven customization, 9x rate of helmet improvement

Helmets considered top-performing only three years ago now prohibited due to development of safer models

NEW YORK, April 13, 2023 – As part of the release of its annual helmet testing results, the NFL and NFLPA announced today a quarterback-specific helmet will be available for the first time for the 2023 season. Half of all QB concussions occur when their helmets hit the ground. This helmet will reduce the severity of those specific impacts. The VICIS ZERO2 MATRIX QB performed 7% better in quarterback-specific testing than the most popular helmet worn by quarterbacks last season.

Helmets designed for the experiences of specific position groups is the latest innovation in the advance of helmet technology. Position-specific helmet designs take into account the unique locations and speeds of head impacts for each position group to offer players more customized protection. The league shares a wide range of game impact data with helmet manufacturers to inform their enhanced designs, including data from mouthguard sensors and advanced video footage. Position-specific testing will be extended to additional positions in the coming years.

The addition of a QB-specific helmet follows the introduction in the 2021 season of an offensive and defensive linemen-specific helmet. Two OL and DL-specific helmets now top the 2023 NFL-NFLPA helmet rankings.

“Helmets customized to the unique experiences of a position group promotes player safety,” said Jeff Miller, NFL Executive Vice President overseeing Player Health and Safety. “This is the next evolution in a rapidly advancing market for improved helmets. We’re proud to share the data necessary to design and build better equipment.”

The NFL and NFLPA’s release today of the results of their annual helmet laboratory testing demonstrate continued helmet safety innovation. Jointly appointed biomechanical engineers ranked 50 helmet models, including three new models. Two of the new models ranked in the ‘Top-Performing’ group, continuing a rate of improvement in helmet performance that has increased by nine times since before the start of the helmet testing program in 2015.

Rate of innovation is evidenced by helmets’ rankings over time: Seven helmets that were in the Top-Performing group in 2020 are now Newly-Prohibited for the season ahead.

The helmet rankings poster ranks and groups helmets according to their laboratory performance into three categories: Top-Performing (green); Not Recommended (yellow); and Newly-Prohibited (red). More than 99% of players wore Top-Performing helmets last season. As part of an NFL-NFLPA policy, Not Recommended and Newly-Prohibited helmets may only be worn by players who wore those helmets during the 2022 NFL season. No players will be permitted to wear the Newly-Prohibited models starting in the 2024 season.

Evidence of helmet innovation extends beyond the 2023 rankings released today, as demonstrated by the three awardees of the NFL Helmet Challenge, a $3 million competition designed to accelerate helmet performance and safety for NFL players.

The awardees – Kollide, Xenith, and Impressio – submitted helmet prototypes that demonstrate it is possible to both exceed performance of existing commercially available helmets while also decreasing helmet weight.  Their submissions reflect unique designs, including the use of advanced, energy-absorbing materials such as liquid-crystal elastomer (LCE) material, 3D printed mesh, and engineered energy control structures to redirect and optimize absorption of the forces from on-field contacts. The helmets drew recognition from the NFL Head Health Tech Helmet Challenge Committee, which includes experts in biomechanics and sports equipment safety, including engineers, scientists, and researchers.

The three awardees will continue work to further develop their prototypes in an effort to increase the field-readiness of their respective helmet models.

SAN DIEGO PADRES NOTES:

Padres lose their 1st series of 2023, fall 5-2 to Mets yesterday in rubber match
• Starter Blake Snell went 5.0 innings for the 1st time this season, but he allowed 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits and 5 walks…he was saddled with the loss (now 0-2) and allowed 2 homers while fanning 5.

• Juan Soto hit his 3rd double and his 3rd homer of the season on Wednesday (his homer was a 1st-inning 2-run shot). But the Padres’ offense went 0-for-7 with RISP. Uniform Breakdown: Padres to wear 5 different uni’s in the next 5 days

• Tonight, the Padres will wear their normal white pinstripes, on Friday, they’ll wear the City Connect uniforms, and on Saturday, every club will wear No. 42 to commemorate the anniversary of April 15, 1947, when Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball…on Sunday, the Padres will wear their camouflage jerseys for their usual Military Appreciation Sunday’s, and on Monday, the Padres will wear their 1948 replica jerseys from the Pacific Coast League Padres to honor San Diegan Johnny Ritchey breaking the color barrier 75 years ago with the PCL Padres…if you count the Padres’ road pinstripes on Wednesday, it’ll be 6 uniforms in 6 days. 1st road-trip of ’23 is a winning one: go 4-3 as they took 3 of 4 in Atlanta and 1 of 3 at New York Mets

• Despite losing yesterday’s game in New York, San Diego secured a winning 1st road-trip of 2023, having won 3 of 4 games from the Braves in Atlanta (the Braves hadn’t lost 3 straight games at home in all of 2022) and having won 1 of the 3 @ Citi Field.

• Despite yesterday’s loss, the Padres have now won 4 of their last 6 games and 7 of their last 11. Padres in a stretch of playing 18 games in 18 days; 21 games in 22 days

• San Diego had their 1st off day on Wednesday and will not enjoy their 2nd one until April 24th, playing 18 games in 18 days from April 6-23…their 3rd off day will be on April 28, and since April 6, their current stretch of games are also 21 games in 22 days.

• San Diego is also starting the regular season with 24 games in 25 days…they had 1 off day on April 5, they will have one in Chicago on April 24th, and they’ll have their 1st off day in San Diego on April 28.

Catching up to the heat
• The Brewers this year are leading the Majors in batting AVG. against fastball, hitting .320…the Padres, however, have the lowest clip vs. fastballs in the National League and 4th lowest in MLB at .206.

Friar pitchers have 4th-lowest opponent AVG vs. offspeed/breaking balls
• The SD pitching staff have held opponents to a .176 AVG against non-fastballs this year (off-speed & breaking balls), which is the 4th lowest opponent clip in baseball behind the Cubs (.167), Guardians (.166), and Twins (.160).

Juan Soto: walk machine
• Juan Soto has walked 11 times this season, T-3rd most in MLB this year, and over his career, the 24 year old has been issued free passes at 19.1%, a higher rate than all but 4 other players in the history of the game (min. 2,000 PA).

• His 19.1 % trails just Babe Ruth (19.4%), Max Bishop (20.1%), Barry Bonds (20.3%), and Ted Williams (20.6%).

STARTER – NICK MARTINEZ 21
Martinez gets 3rd start of season to kick off homestand
RHP Nick Martinez takes the mound for Game 1 of this 4-game set tonight vs. the Brewers…both of his 2 career appearances vs. the Brewers came last season…first as a starter, tossing 5.0 innings of 2-run ball behind a season-high 106 pitches in SD’s 3-2 victory on May 23 at Petco Park…he piggybacked Mike Clevinger on June 5 with 4.0 innings of 2-run ball in SD’s 6-4 victory…he would go on to make 2 more starts before moving into a full time relief role on June 22 through the NLCS. Christian Yelich’s 7 at-bats are the most of any Brewers hitter vs. Martinez (.429 AVG)… Rowdy Telez is 1-for-4 (.250), Tyrone Taylor is 1-for-3 (.333), Luis Urias is 1-for-3 (.333) and Victor Caratini (0-for-2) and Brian Anderson (0-for-1) are both hitless….Taylor’s double is the only XBH among all Brewers vs. Yelich.

Martinez doesn’t factor into SD’s 5-4 win
In his most recent outing last Friday, April 7 at ATL, Martinez tossed exactly 101 pitches for and allowed 4 earned runs for the 2nd consecutive outing to start his season, but got through just 4.2 innings as opposed to his 7.0 frames in his first start of the season on March 31 vs. COL…it’s the first time he’s tossed 100+ pitches in back-to-back Major Leauge games since May 3-8, 2017.

Representin’
On February 19, 2023, Team USA announced that Martinez replaced Clayton Kershaw on the 30-man roster for the United States team in the 2023 World Baseball Classic…he started Game 2 of pool play against Team Mexico and was the losing pitcher, allowing five hits and three runs with two strikeouts in 2 2/3 innings of the 11-5 defeat…after he wasn’t guaranteed to start for Team USA for the rest of the event, he returned to Padres spring training to prepare for the start of the major league season.

Cactus League play
Martinez went 2-1 with 1.93 ERA across his 4 Cactus League starts this Spring…he struck out 19 across 14.0 IP and opponents hit .245 against him.

Nick’s with us
He originally signed with SD on March 16, 2022 to a 1-year contract for the 2022 season with player options for 2023, 2024 and 2025…exercised his opt out clause after the ’22 season, but re-signed with SD to a 3-year contract through 2025 with a club option covering the 2024 and 2025 seasons…if the club option is declined, Martinez holds two separate player options and can either opt-out or extend the contract through 2024 and 2025.

A one-man category
In 2022, he converted 8 of his 9 save opportunities and collected 8 holds while also making 10 starts…he’s the only pitcher in MLB history to have 4+ holds and 8+ saves while also making 10+ starts in a single campaign.

Dad strength
After returning from the paternity list following the birth of his daughter, Stella, on August 1, 2022, he posted a career-long 15.0 scoreless-inning streak from Aug. 1 to Aug. 29 across 11 appearances. It was the 2nd-longest streak among all SD relievers in ‘22, trailing only Tim Hill (18.2 scoreless IP from July 9-Sept 6).
