Orlando Pride Forward Darian Jenkins Announces Retirement

UCLA product’s career comes to a close after six professional seasons

ORLANDO, Fla. — Orlando Pride forward Darian Jenkins has retired from professional soccer, the forward and Club announced today, bringing her six-year career to a close.

“After 21 years of playing, I have decided that it’s time for me to hang up my boots and step away from the beautiful game. My body and mind are ready for the next chapter. This isn’t an easy decision, but being able to retire on my own terms has given me peace. I know I’ve given everything I can to the game on and off the field, and feel proud of myself with how much I overcame in each phase of my career,” Jenkins said. “Thank you to the amazing people I have had the pleasure to work with during my career – my coaches, teammates, my agency and most importantly, the fans. You have helped make me into the confident and determined woman I am today. And a special thank you to my Pride girlies, I’m happy to have ended it in purple with you all and everything we overcame. It’s been such an amazing experience and one I’ll miss immensely.”

Jenkins, 28, joined the Pride ahead of the 2022 season, going on to make 23 appearances across all competitions with four goals and two assists. Both of Jenkins’ regular season tallies came in important moments, the first a 98th-minute equalizer on May 27 against Washington that, at the time, clocked as the latest goal in regular-season history. Just a week later, Jenkins came through in the clutch again, scoring a thrilling tying goal at the historic DAYTONA International Speedway in the Pride’s match as part of Daytona SoccerFest.

“Darian is an incredible player, professional and teammate, and we are going to deeply miss her here in Orlando. She’s a player who represented the values of our crest, both on and off the field, and we are lucky to have had her in purple,” Pride Head Coach Seb Hines said. “It’s never easy to see a player step away from the game but, having been in this position before, I’m happy that she is at peace and excited to start the next chapter of her life. On behalf of everyone at the Club, our fans, and our community, we thank Darian for being part of our history and wish her nothing but the best in what comes next.”

A native of Riverton, Utah, Jenkins joined the NWSL as the No. 7 overall selection in the 2017 NWSL College Draft by the North Carolina Courage. Prior to arriving in Orlando, Jenkins spent time in the NWSL with the Courage, OL Reign and Kansas City Current, as well as overseas stints with Australia’s Melbourne Victory and France’s Bordeaux.

Jenkins finishes her NWSL career with 83 total appearances, 11 goals and three assists.

At the collegiate level, Jenkins was an integral part of UCLA’s 2013 Championship winning team, leading the team in scoring during her freshman year and earning All-Pac-12 honors in three of her four seasons. Jenkins also appeared for the U.S. at the U-17, U-18 and U-23 levels, tallying six caps and two goals across all youth teams.

Houston Dash forward Ryan Gareis signs contract extension

NEED TO KNOW:

  • Gareis made six starts and 15 appearances during her rookie season
  • The University of South Carolina product was the only player selected by the Dash in the 2022 NWSL Draft
  • Gareis tallied two assists last season and her versatility was on display throughout the year as she earned minutes as a winger and defender

HOUSTON – Houston Dash forward Ryan Gareis signed a contract extension through the 2025 season, the team announced today.

“We are investing in Ryan’s development for the next several years and we are happy she chose to stay in Houston long term,” Dash general manager Alex Singer said. “Her potential is through the roof. The versatility she displayed in her rookie season was important for us, she stepped out of her comfort zone and played both as an outside back and a winger. Her attacking abilities and willingness to learn are qualities we look forward to seeing more of. She is a tremendous teammate with a very bright future.”

Gareis made an immediate impact during her rookie season. The Naperville, Ill. native made six starts and 15 appearances during Houston’s historic 2022 season. Gareis made her NWSL debut in the opening game of the 2022 Challenge Cup as a substitute in the 63rd minute of the match against her hometown team, the Chicago Red Stars, last March.

Gareis earned her first start in a regular season match at home against the Red Stars on July 16. Gareis recorded her first career assist in that match when she found Ebony Salmon in the second half. Houston’s 4-1 win over Chicago sparked a four-game unbeaten streak (3W, 1D).

Gareis closed the regular season with three consecutive starts. The stretch began against the Red Stars, continued against OL Reign and culminated versus the Washington Spirit. In the regular season finale against the Spirit on Oct. 1, Gareis recorded her second assist of the season in the match’s opening goal.

“I am so excited to extend my time in Houston,” Gareis said. “I have so much love for the team, community, the city, the organization. Everything about my experience here has made it feel like home. I have big goals for the team and myself, and I am excited to see how I can develop in such a great environment over the next few years.”

The 24-year-old was named to the game day roster for Houston’s first playoff match in club history on October 16.

Prior to her professional career, Gareis starred at the University of South Carolina. She finished with 99 career appearances and started 70 games. In her final collegiate season, Gareis scored four goals and tallied nine assists. The forward earned several awards while at South Carolina including multiple SEC Offensive Player of the Week awards and CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team honors as a senior.

The extension replaces Gareis’ rookie contract which she signed last February during the 2022 preseason.

TRANSACTIONHouston Dash and forward Ryan Gareis agree to contract extension through 2025 season.

Orlando Pride Acquires Brazilian National Team Forward Adriana

Decorated forward joins Pride on three-year deal via transfer from Corinthians

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Pride has acquired Adriana Leal da Silva, more commonly known as Adriana, via transfer from Brazilian side Corinthians, it was announced today. Adriana joins the Pride on a three-year contract, pending receipt of a P-1 visa and ITC, with Allocation Money used in both the signing and transfer.

“Adriana is an exciting, dynamic and entertaining player with an eye for the goal. She possesses great technical ability and an incredible work rate, and we’re extremely happy to have her as part of the Pride,” Orlando Pride Head Coach Seb Hines said. “She’s a player that thrives in one-on-one situations and one that will bring new attacking power to our front line. Adriana is already a winner for club and country but still has an ambition to take her career to the next level, and we’re happy to have her do so here in Orlando.”

“I am very happy to have signed with Orlando Pride, a special club. I am happy and excited to arrive there quickly and be able to do my best on the field to help Orlando win titles,” Adriana said. “It’s a big challenge ahead and we athletes are motivated by challenges. I’m ready to face all of them with all our strength as a team and fight tooth-and-nail. I hope it’s a very successful season for myself and for Orlando. Again, I am very happy to be part of this great club.”

Nicknamed “the Wizard”, Adriana has spent the previous five seasons with Brazilian side Corinthians, with her 2019 season shortened due to injury. Over her career in São Paulo, Adriana made 143 appearances, with 120 of them starts, scoring 72 goals, the second-highest in Corinthians history.

The forward led “Meu Timão” to a decorated history, with 10 total titles and a 116-9-18 record in games in which she appeared. Through her time, Adriana and Corinthians won the Brazilian Championship in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022; Copa Libertadores in 2021; the Paulista Championship in 2019, 2020 and 2021; as well as both the Brazilian Super Cup and Paulista Cup in 2022.

In 2018, after scoring 26 goals in 37 games and leading her side to the Brazilian Championship, the União, Brazil, native was named “Prêmio Craque do Brasileirão” – Player of the Year – by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF). Adriana was named to the CBF’s Team of the Year in both 2021 and 2022, the first two years the award was given in women’s football.

Prior to joining Corinthians, Adriana spent 2013-15 with Tiradentes and 2016-17 with Rio Preto.

Adriana made her debut for the Brazilian national team in 2017, scoring her first goal five days after her senior team debut, in a win over China. The forward was named to Brazil’s roster for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, but was ultimately replaced on the roster due to injury.

In 2021, Adriana was part of Brazil’s squad for the SheBelieves Cup hosted at Exploria Stadium, scoring a goal on Feb. 18 in a 4-1 win over Argentina (watch). Over her national team career, Adriana has scored 12 goals for the Seleção, including back-to-back braces against Argentina and Uruguay at the 2022 Copa América Femenina. With five goals in the tournament, Adriana tied countrywoman Debinha for second-highest goalscorer of the tournament, with her country ultimately lifting the trophy.

Season tickets for the 2023 Orlando Pride campaign are now on sale, with more information available at the link here.

Atlanta Dream Land Allisha Gray

Gold medalist Gray returns home to the southeast through a trade with the Dallas Wings

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Atlanta Dream have acquired Olympic gold medalist Allisha Gray in a trade that sent the team’s 2023 No. 3 pick and 2025 first round pick to the Dallas Wings, the organization announced today.

“Adding Allisha Gray is a huge step for our organization and we are all celebrating a big win today,” said Dream General Manager and Executive Vice President Dan Padover. “She is one of the best two-way guards in the world and is in the prime of her career. The intensity in her style of play will fit perfectly here in Atlanta. We can’t wait to watch our group, now with Allisha, grow together as we continue to build towards becoming a perennial contender in this league.”

Gray, a graduate of Washington County High School in Sandersville, Ga., returns to the southeast for the first time in her career since winning the NCAA National Championship with the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2017. She joins the Dream after a career-best season with the Wings in 2022, where she averaged 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game.

The 2017 WNBA Rookie of the Year, Gray took home a gold medal in the first Olympics 3×3 competition at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympics. She was named the 2021 USA Basketball 3×3 Athlete of the Year after helping lead the USA to their gold medal, and is now 27-3 all-time representing USA five-on-five and 3×3 national teams.

This is the Dream’s second trade of 2023 after the team acquired veteran guard Danielle Robinson in a trade with Indiana earlier this month.

The Vegas Golden Knights (28-16-2) were knocked off by the Detroit Red Wings (19-17-8) by a score of 3-2 on Thursday night at TMobile Arena. After Lucas Raymond’s opening goal less than three minutes into the game, Alex Pietrangelo got Vegas on the board and the teams went into the break level at 1-1. Dominik Kubalkik and Joe Veleno socred in the middle frame as Detroit carried a 3-1 lead into the third. A late goal from William Karlsson wasn’t enough in the 3-2 loss.

  • Karlsson’s goal was his third in four games to bring his total to 10 on the season
  • Reilly Smith’s two helpers gave him his seventh multi-point game of the season
  • Pietrangelo’s goal was Vegas’ first blue-liner tally since Nic Hague’s overtime winner on Dec. 31

Vegas’ contest with Washington on Saturday is the last of two meetings this season. The Golden Knights own a 7-2-0 record against the Capitals, and swept their series in 2021-22. • Seattle has not surrendered a power-play goal to Colorado in their last three meetings. They are 9-for-11 all time on the penalty kill against the Avalanche.

• Since the start of the New Year, the Kraken are leading the league in wins (nine), points (18), goals (48) and goals per game (4.36). They are one of only three teams (Edmonton, New Jersey) to be averaging four or more goals per game in 2023.

• Despite only playing in 44 games this season, the Kraken are the first team to have scored at least eight goals in a game four different times since the Pittsburgh Penguins also has four eight-goal games in 2011-12.

Boxing Preview: Jonathan Guidry (18-1-2, 10 KOs) at Bermane Stiverne (25-5-1, 21 KOs)

0

The world’s greatest boxing promoter, Don King, is returning to Casino Miami Jai Alai with another sensational championship card, “The Clash of the Champions! Let Freedom Ring!”, on Saturday, January 21.

The card will be highlighted by the WBA NABA Gold Heavyweight Championship as NABA Gold Heavyweight Champion Jonathan Guidry (18-1-2, 10 KOs) of Dulac, LA will be risking his title against former WBC Heavyweight Champion Bermane Stiverne (25-5-1, 21 KOs) from Las Vegas, NV via Canada.

Doors will open at 6 p.m. and the action will begin at 7 p.m.

Guidry is coming off a sensational performance against tough Dacarree Scott. Guidry won a tough battle with Scott and sent him to the canvas at 2:01 of the seventh round to claim the NABA Gold Heavyweight title on June 11, 2022 at Casino Miami Jai-Alai.

Guidry had started the year suffering his first loss after 17 straight victories as a professional, losing a split decision and the WBA Championship to Trevor Bryan in Warren, Ohio on Jan. 29.

Stiverne, like Guidry, lost his last fight to Trevor Bryan for the WBA Heavyweight Championship on Jan. 29, 2021 at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Bryan floored Stiverne twice, the last coming with 1:27 of the 11th round when referee Frank Gentile called a halt to the proceedings.

Don King Adds Seven Great Fights to Guidry-Stiverne Undercard
NABA Welterweight Champion Tre’Sean Wiggins (14-5-3, 8 KOs) of Newburgh, NY will defend his title against Nigel Fennel (13-1, 8 KOs) of San Diego in a 10-round bout. Wiggins thrilled fans at his last defense of his title at the Casino Miami Jai-Alai as he knocked out Travis Castellon at 2:07 of the first round on June 11.

WBA Continental Americas Middleweight Champion Ian Green (16-2, 11 KOs) of Haledon, NJ will defend his title against undefeated Alexander Castro (11-0, 9 KOs) from Tulua, Columbia in a 10-round title fight. Like Wiggins, Green was impressive on June 11 at Miami Casino Jai-Alai in winning a unanimous 10-round decision over Anthony Lenk. This will be Castro’s first fight in the United States.

The first two bouts of the night will feature a super lightweight attraction between Raynel Mederos (7-0, 2 KOs) of Miami, Fl via Cuba against Nelson Morales (3-1) from Scranton, PA via the Dominican Republic for 6 rounds. The other six-round bout is a light heavyweight attraction for six rounds featuring Kenmon Evans (9-0-1, 3 KOs) of New Smyrna Beach, FL against Cleotis Pendarvis (21-13-2, 9 KOs) of Lancaster, CA.

Three Cuban fighters will also be featured on the undercard. Alex Michael Perez (4-11) will fight in a six-round middleweight attraction against Carlos Crus (2-9, 1 KO) of Deerfield Beach via Nicaragua. Brayan Leon Salgado (1-1) will enter the ring in a four-round light heavyweight attraction against Salome Flores Torres (1-7) from Hastings, MN and the final Cuban fighter, Darian Favier Castro (1-1) will be in a six-round junior welterweight attraction against Ryan Schwartzberg (1-8-2, 1 KO) of Dania, FL
