0

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Dodgers activated outfielder Mookie Betts, recalled right-handed pitcher Andre Jackson, optioned infielder Yonny Hernández and placed right-handed pitcher Evan Phillips on the paternity list.

Betts, 30, returns after missing two games. He has appeared in all 17 games for the Dodgers this season, hitting .266 (17-for-64) with two homers and six RBI. He is in his fourth season with the Dodgers, and he has slashed .271/.356/.518 with 76 homers and 185 RBI in 336 games with the Boys in Blue. He is in his 10th Major League season, and he has a career batting average of .292 (1323-for-4524) with 215 homers and 655 RBI. The 2018 American League MVP was originally drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the fourth round of the 2011 Draft out of Overton High School (Nashville, TN).

Jackson, 26, returns for his second stint with the Dodgers and posted a 8.64 ERA (8 ER/8.1 IP) with seven strikeouts and a save. In his career, he is 0-1 with a 3.94 ERA (13 ER/29.1 IP) and 26 strikeouts in 11 games for the Dodgers. He pitched with Triple-A Oklahoma City last night, striking out the only batter he faced. He was drafted by the Dodgers in the 12th round of the 2017 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Utah.

Hernández, 24, appeared in one game for the Dodgers, pinch hitting in the ninth inning yesterday and grounding out. In 12 games for the Diamondbacks last year, he recorded two hits in 24 at-bats. He has been in the Majors parts of two seasons with Texas (2021), Arizona (2022) and Los Angeles (2023), batting a combined .196 (33-for-168) with five doubles and six RBI, while playing three different positions and recording a .977 fielding percentage. The Venezuelan native was hitting .308 (4-for-13) with two RBI in four games with Triple-A Oklahoma City. He was acquired via trade from the Oakland Athletics on December 15, 2022 for cash considerations.

Phillips, 28, has appeared in eight games for the Dodgers this season, allowing three runs in 7.0 innings and recording a team-leading two saves. He has been with the Dodgers since 2021 and he has posted an 8-4 record with a 1.68 ERA (15 ER/80.1 IP) and 94 strikeouts. He has been in the Majors parts of six seasons with Baltimore (2018-20), Tampa Bay (2021), Los Angeles (2021-23) and he is combined 9-7 with a 4.00 ERA (61 ER/137.1 IP) and 164 strikeouts in 128 games. He was originally drafted in the 17th round of the 2015 First Year Player Draft out of the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

The biggest rivalry of the modern boxing era will finally settle its score on April 22 when Southern California superstar “King” Ryan Garcia (23-0, 19 KOs) takes on Baltimore’s Gervonta “Tank” Davis (28-0, 26 KOs). Las Vegas, Nevada, the historic home of boxing’s greatest grudge matches, will play host to one of the most anticipated fights to date, as the undefeated fighters put their perfect records on the line in a 12-round, 136-pound catchweight bout.

Like all great boxing rivalries, including Muhammad Ali vs. Joe Frazier, Marvin Hagler vs. Thomas Hearns, to the most recent enmity between Manny Pacuiao vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. – King Ryan and Tank have circled each other for years, each calling the other out in a war of words as both built up undefeated resumes and scored knockout after knockout.

“This is the fight I want and this is the fight boxing needs. The hype, the storylines, the two athletes defining their sport inside the ring and out,” said Garcia. “I am going to knock Tank out and take my place as the face of our incredible sport, and I’m bringing a new generation of boxing fans with me. I appreciate Tank volunteering to get beat so that I can get to work.”

Garcia has built up an impressive resume across multiple weight classes, knocking out Olympian Luke Campbell in a 7th round TKO for the interim WBC lightweight belt, and most recently defeating Javier Fortuna in a 6th round knockout in front of a packed, star-studded audience at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles this July. Since then, he has been adamant about making his next bout the faceoff boxing fans have wanted to see for years, against longtime rival, Davis. As other banner boxing matches fell apart this fall, Garcia became a vocal advocate for player empowerment in the sport, arguing that negotiations among networks and promoters shouldn’t hold fighters and fans back from the superstar clashes the sport deserves. By saying what fans and fighters have felt for years, Garcia’s bold stance won him accolades across both the boxing community and the professional sports world.

Boxing Preview: Lukasz Rozanski (14-0-0, 13 KOs) vs Alen Babic (11-0-0, 10 KOs)

Lukasz Rozanski vs Alen Babic for vacant WBC World Bridgerweight Title headlines Rzeszów event presented in association with Knockout Promotions – The formidable Caroline Dubois fights overseas for the first time as a professional.

Martin Bakole vs Ihor Shevadzutskyi: BOXXER debut for ‘The Next King of Scotland’ Bakole, live on Sky Sports – Hard-hitting Jeamie TKV looks to make yet another emphatic statement on the heavyweight scene.

BOXXER heads to Poland next month for its second international event of 2023, presenting a world title fight and a stacked card of elite championship boxing on Saturday, April 22, in association with Knockout Promotions.

ROZANSKI VS. BABIC START TIME Date:
Saturday, April 22
Main card: 7 p.m. BST / 2 p.m. ET
Main event ringwalks (approx): 11 p.m. BST / 6 p.m. ET
Sky Sports will broadcast the fight in the UK
The fight will take place at the G2A Arena, Rzeszow, Poland.
The main card is set to get underway at 7 p.m. BST / 2 p.m. ET with the main event ringwalks scheduled for 11 p.m. BST / 6 p.m. ET.

Fresh from a successful event in Paris last weekend, where Dan Azeez captured the EBU light-heavyweight title and Lauren Price extended her unbeaten professional record, another huge trip to the continent is in the reckoning.

Caroline Dubois leads the star-studded travelling party to Rzeszów, along with brand new BOXXER signing Martin Bakole and fellow heavyweight Jeamie TKV – with Alen Babic headlining, live and exclusively in the UK & Republic of Ireland on Sky Sports, when he faces Lukasz Rozanski for the vacant WBC World Bridgerweight title.

Trained by Shane McGuigan, rising superstar Dubois (6-0, 5 KOs) blasted her way through Feriche Mashaury at the OVO Wembley Arena in February to make another emphatic stride in her burgeoning career.

Mashaury has fought the likes of Chantelle Cameron and Terri Harper and took recently crowned British Boxer of the Year Natasha Jonas the distance in 2019.

But former Team GB hero Dubois, 22, made light work of her Tanzania rival and dispatched her inside two destructive rounds. An opponent for April 22 will be named in due course.

The ‘Next King of Scotland’ Martin Bakole (18-1-0, 13 KOs) will make his highly-anticipated BOXXER debut when he takes on unbeaten Ukrainian, Ihor Shevadzutskyi (10-0, 8 KOs) in a battle of the behemoths.

Bakole signed a long-term deal with BOXXER back in February. And the Ayrshire-based heavyweight, who is ranked highly by the WBA, will be out to make a major statement when he collides with a man nicknamed ‘the Hulk’, who has wins over Kevin Johnson and Kamil Sokolowski on his CV.

Standing at a menacing 6ft 6in, Bakole hails from the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he was born a prince to the son of the ruler of the Kananga province. His brother is former WBC World Cruiserweight king, Ilunga Makabu.

His record is as impressive as his stature, having won 18 professional fights including his last in May 2022 when he celebrated a majority decision victory over Tony Yoka in the Rio 2016 Olympic champion’s homeland in Paris, France.

Bakole’s only defeat was in 2018 to American heavyweight Michael Hunter. But he has responded with seven successive wins since – five of which were knockouts, including triumphs against Kevin Johnson and Mariusz Wach.

Another impressive heavyweight on the fight card in Rzeszów is Jeamie TKV (4-0, 2 KOs).

The undefeated Londoner has made a great impression with BOXXER, enjoying four wins – including his breathtaking points victory over Harry Armstrong last month.

The 29-year-old has been training in Texas and can now look forward to his first fight outside of his capital city when he travels to Poland next month. Completing the line-up will be a hotly-contested main event which sees the popular Croatian knockout artist, Alen ‘The Savage’ Babic (11-0, 10 KOs) battle Poland’s own Lukasz Rozanski (14-0, 13 KOS) for the vacant WBC World Bridgerweight Championship.

BOXXER CEO & Founder, Ben Shalom said: “Another significant European adventure awaits. Paris was an incredible success and we believe that this fight night in Poland will be hugely impactful in the world of boxing.

“Caroline Dubois has proved unstoppable and this will be a brilliant test for her overseas. Jeamie TKV has lit up our screens with some hugely impressive heavyweight performances and you will not want to blink when the ‘Next King of Scotland’ Martin Bakole stands toe-to-toe with the ‘Ukrainian Hulk’, Ihor Shevadzutskyi in chief support.

“Topped by a huge world title fight with Alan Babic, we are looking forward to another showcase for our world class roster on the global stage with Sky Sports.”

Boxing Preview: Joe Cordina (15-0, 9 KOs) vs Shavkatdzhon Rakhmiov (17-0-1, 14 KOs)

Unbeaten Welshman Joe Cordina (15-0, 9 KOs) attempts to win his IBF Super-Featherweight World Title back against current belt-holder Shavkatdzhon Rakhmiov (17-0-1, 14 KOs) at the Cardiff International Arena.

Joe Cordina has the opportunity to become a two-time IBF Super-Featherweight World Champion when he faces current belt-holder Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov in what promises to be an electric night of boxing at the Cardiff International Arena on Saturday April 22, live worldwide on DAZN (excluding Australia and New Zealand).

RAKHIMOV VS. CORDINA START TIME Date:
Saturday April 22
Start time: 7 p.m. BST / 2 p.m. ET
Main event ringwalks (approx): 10 p.m. BST / 5 p.m. ET
The fight will be held at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff, Wales.
The fight and card can be watched around the world live on DAZN excluding Australia and New Zealand.
The event is set to get underway at 7 p.m. BST / 2 p.m. ET with the main event ringwalks scheduled for 10 p.m. BST / 5 p.m. ET.

‘The Welsh Wizard’ (15-0, 9 KOs) captured the famous red and gold belt with a stunning one-punch knockout of Japan’s Kenichi Ogawa on a memorable night at the arena last June to become his country’s latest World Champion.

Cordina was scheduled to make the first defence of his World Title against Rakhimov in Abu Dhabi last November but suffered a hand injury that required surgery and was subsequently stripped of his title by the IBF.

Tajikistan’s Rakhimov (17-0-1, 14 KOs) won the vacant title by stopping Manchester’s Zelfa Barrett in nine rounds on the undercard of Dmitry Bivol vs. Gilberto Ramirez, and the 28-year-old southpaw is relishing the challenge of defending his crown in Cordina’s backyard.

Welsh rivals Gavin Gwynne (15-2-1, 3 KOs) and Craig Woodruff (12-6-1, 4 KOs) will rematch for the British Lightweight Title following their thrilling draw at the Bolton Whites Hotel last September and Manchester Cruiserweight Jordan Thompson (14-0, 11 KOs) puts his IBF European Title on the line against Swindon’s Luke Watkins (16-2, 11 KOs) – with more undercard fights to be announced soon.

“I saw Rakhimov in Abu Dhabi and he’s certainly a good fighter,” said Cordina. “I respect him, he’s strong and tough but you need to have a more than that to beat me. I never lost my belt in the ring, so my mindset is that I’m going to be walking in as the champion and leaving as the champion. Last time out the fans were unreal, and I can’t wait to experience that incredible atmosphere again in Cardiff.”

“I cannot wait for Rakhimov against Cordina at the Cardiff International Arena,” said Matchroom Sport Chairman Eddie Hearn. “Last time out it was an incredible night as Joe was crowned the new IBF Super-Featherweight World Champion with a sensational one-punch knockout win over Ogawa – this time it’s going to be even bigger and better.

“This is a massive night for Welsh boxing and for Joe Cordina. He has a straight shot to become a two-time World Champion without ever losing his belt in the ring. We saw Rakhimov in an unbelievable fight with Zelfa Barrett in Abu Dhabi and I’m expecting another great fight on April 22.

“Gavin Gwynne puts his British Lightweight Title on the line for the second time against Newport’s Craig Woodruff following their thrilling draw in September and Manchester Cruiserweight contender Jordan Thompson returns as he puts his IBF European Title on the line against Swindon’s Luke Watkins. There’s plenty more to come as we gear up for another electric night in Cardiff!”

MMA Preview: UFC 71 – Sergei Pavlovich (17-1, 14 KOs) vs Curtis Blaydes (12-3-1, 12 KOs)

0

Sergei Pavlovich vs Curtis Blaydes is the main event of UFC Vegas 71, which is taking place on Saturday, April 22, at UFC Apex

Sergei Pavlovich (17-1) and Curtis Blaydes (12-3-1) are two heavyweights with championship ambitions. Both are great fighters but with different sets of skills. Pavlovich is a fantastic boxer, while Blaydes is a great wrestler.

Sergei Pavlovich vs Curtis Blaydes Odds

MoneylineOdds
Sergei Pavlovich+147
Curtis Blaydes-172

*Odds taken from Sports Odds Direct Thursday, April 20, 2023.

When, Where, and How to Watch?

  • Place: UFC Apex in Enterprise, Nevada
  • Date: Saturday, April 22, 2023
  • Time: ~10:00 PM ET
  • How to Watch: ESPN 2 / ESPN+

Sergei Pavlovich has an 84-inch-long reach, which makes it very hard for his opponents to get to him. He also averages 8.07 significant strikes per minute, which is among the best in the UFC. Plus, his strikes are incredibly powerful as evident from the fact that he’s got an 82.35% knockout rate.

Actually, this guy has won his last five UFC fights by KO/TKO. Can he add a sixth straight win by this method on Saturday? Oddsmakers aren’t so sure about that. They see his opponent as the favorite to triumph in the UFC Vegas 71 headliner.

Curtis Blaydes is a well-rounded fighter, but we honestly doubt he could outbox Pavlovich. After all, not even such great strikers as Derrick Lewis and Tai Tuivasa managed to outbox this guy. That said, Blaydes will probably try to outwrestle his opponent.

The American is a fantastic wrestler who lands 6.05 takedowns per 15 minutes on average. His takedown percentage is 53%, which is pretty solid as well. What’s interesting is that he’s never won a fight by submission. Instead, he prefers to go for “ground-and-pound” which explains why he’s won 12 of his fights by KO/TKO.

MMA Preview: Bellator 294 – Liz Carmouche (18-7, 8 KOs) vs DeAnna Bennett (13-7-1, 4 KOs) 2

0

Bellator 294 is coming to Hawaii this Friday, with the main event of the evening being the Women’s Flyweight Championship fight between Liz Carmouche (c) and DeAnna Bennett

This is going to be the second time Liz Carmouche and DeAnna Bennett meet in the ring. Their first fight took place in 2020 when we saw Carmouche beat Bennett by a rear naked choke.

Carmouche vs Bennett 2 Odds

MoneylineOdds
Liz Carmouche-450
DeAnna Bennett+350
*Odds taken from Sports Odds Direct on Thursday, April 20, 2023.

When, Where, and How to Watch?

  • Place: Neal S. Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu, Hawaii
  • Date: Friday, April 21, 2023
  • Time: ~10:00 PM ET
  • How to Watch: Showtime

Carmouche is 18-7 in her professional career with eight wins by knockout, four by submission, and six by decision. When it comes to her losses, two happened by submission and five by decision. As of 2023, she’s still without a single loss by KO/TKO.

A fun fact about Carmouche’s record is that she’s without a loss since joining Bellator MMA, with six wins in a row. The last time she lost was in 2019 in the title fight for the UFC Women’s Flyweight Championship.

In fact, most of her losses happened to elite fighters. In addition to Shevchenko, we also saw her lose to Miesha Tate, Alexis Davis, and so on. Can DeAnna Bennett get on this list?

The outcome of this fight depends solely on how Carmouche performs. Everything is in her hands, that’s how much superior she is to her opponent. But even the best fighters have a bad day sometimes. If that happens, can DeAnna Bennett take advantage of the situation?

Bennett is not a bad fighter, although she’s nowhere near Carmouche. She is 13-7-1 with three wins in a row. However, before that, she lost three straight wins. Her last three wins each happened by a decision, while two of those aforementioned losses happened by a submission.

Submission is the method by which she lost to Carmouche the first time they met.

CHICAGO CUBS NOTES:

CUBS CELEBRATE NO. 42: The Chicago Cubs, fresh off a 5-1 road trip at the Dodgers (2-1) and Athletics (3-0), tonight celebrate the life and legacy of baseball legend Jackie Robinson, and honor his contributions to the game of baseball, as the team plays the first of four games against the Dodgers at Wrigley Field. © For today’s celebration, head basketball coach from Simeon Career Academy Robert Smith will throw out the ceremonial first pitch and former NBA player and current college basketball analyst Stephen Bardo will sing the seventh-inning stretch.

Among the many ways the Cubs will pay tribute to the baseball icon during the Jackie Robinson Celebration at Wrigley Field, the team will fly “42” flags around the Wrigley Field Marquee and roofline.

5-1 IN THE CALIFORNIA SUN: The Cubs, winners of a season-high four-straight games, yesterday completed a three-game sweep of the Oakland Athletics with a 12-2 victory, putting a bow on a 5-1 road trip that started with a series win at Dodger Stadium last weekend … Chicago in the six-game sojourn batted .297 (66-for-222) with 38 runs scored (6.33 runs per game) while pitching to a 1.34 ERA (8 ER/53.2 IP).

The Cubs allowed two or fewer runs in all six games of the trip … the previous time the club held opponents to two or fewer runs in six-straight games of a road trip was Sept. 12-17, 1952, with two contests each against Philadelphia, Boston and New York.

Chicago outscored the Dodgers and Athletics by a combined 29 runs on the just-completed trip … the last time the Cubs outscored the opposition by more runs in six games, all on the road, was from Aug. 11-15, 1945 (The Cubs scored 49 runs while allowing only 18 – a difference of 31 against the Braves, Phillies and Dodgers) … thanks to Ed Hartig for his research assistance.

CURRENT EVENTS: Chicago has started the season 11-6, winning at least 11 of its first 17 games for the first time since 2020 (13-4) and for the seventh time since 2000.

Thanks in part to a 12-run outburst yesterday in Oakland, the Cubs have plated 10 or more runs in five of their first 17 games … it’s the third time since 1901 Chicago has recorded five 10-run games within its first 17 season contests, also done by the 2004 and 2019 clubs.

Chicago has won four-consecutive series (2-1 vs. TEX, 2-1 vs. SEA, 2-1 @ LAD, 3-0 vs. OAK) and aims to win five-straight series (of two or more games) for the first time since Aug. 5-21, 2022 (2-1 vs. MIA, 2-1 vs. WSH, 2-1 @ CIN, 2-1 @ WSH, 2-1 vs. MIA).

© Hoerner has gone 28-straight plate appearances without a strikeout, the
longest active streak in the majors.

NOBODY BEATS THE WIZ: Patrick Wisdom has at least one extra-base hit in each of his last six games, the first Cub to turn that trick since Frank Schwindel had seven-consecutive games with an extra-base knock Aug. 12-18, 2021.

Wisdom homered in each of the first four games of the just-completed road trip, including a multi-homer effort Monday in Oakland … he is the first Cub with five homers in four games since Willson Contreras did it Aug. 3-6, 2017, and the seventh to do it since 2000 (combined 17 occurences).

Wisdom’s eight homers thus far are tied for the major league lead … he hit the eight homers in his first 15 games, making him the fourth Cub to hit at least eight homers in the first 15 games of a season (also Lee Walls, 1958; Hank Sauer, 1954; and Gabby Hartnett, 1925).

ABOUT THE BATS: Cubs hitters rank second in the majors with a .286 average (172- for-601) while the team’s 5.82 runs per game rank third behind only Tampa Bay (7.00) and Texas (6.22).
