The Maple Leafs are set to take on the Buffalo Sabres tonight in the second of three matchups between the clubs this season. Toronto won their first meeting of the 2022-23 campaign against Buffalo by a 5-2 score on November 19, 2022. John Tavares (1G, 2A), William Nylander (2G) and Mitch Marner (2A) all recorded a multi-point game in Toronto’s win over Buffalo. — Carolina is facing St. Louis in the second and final meeting between the teams during the 2022-23 season.

Kaleb Thornton (Bolingbrook, Ill.) moved into 10th place on NIU’s all-time assists list with his seven against Miami, passing Carl Armato (284 – 1979-80, 81-84). Thornton has 286 career assists. The Bolingbrook, Sick., local likewise moved into the single-season top-10 against Miami, as his 119 helps this season is the seventh-best imprint in Huskie history.

On Saturday against the RedHawks, Anthony Crump (Inkster, Mich.) recorded his second double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Crump is the only Huskie to have played in all 27 games this season. Over the last three games, he has been averaging 14.7 points and 11.0 rebounds per game. Crump ranks fourth in the MAC in field goal percentage (62.9%) and 14th in rebounding (5.6 boards per game) in conference play.

On Tuesday in Athens, the Huskies will be aiming for their seventh victory on the road of the season. NIU’s six road victories this season rank third in the MAC, behind only Toledo and Kent State, with Ball State.

The Bobcats’ overall record is 16-11 and their conference record is 8-6. Ohio has won five games in a row, the most recent of which was a 76-59 victory over Central Michigan on February 18. Ohio has four players scoring in the double digits, with Dwight Wilson leading the way with 15.6 points per game. Additionally, Wilson is averaging 9.3 rebounds per game, which ranks third in the MAC. Jaylin Hunter scores 12.5 points per game on average; Miles Brown contributes 10.8 points to each game, and AJ Brown contributes 10.0 points to each game.

The Nevada Men’s Basketball team’s four-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday after a difficult road defeat at Utah State; However, the Pack will try to make a big comeback at home on Tuesday when they play San Jose State at the Lawlor Events Center at 7 p.m. 

The Pack is coming off a tough road loss to Utah State, where they lost 66-75 to the Aggies after their offense let them down in the final 20 minutes and gave up a 15-point halftime lead.

When Nevada takes on San José State on Tuesday night, the Pack will be looking to get back in the win column and keep their perfect home record, which stands at 13-0 this season at the Lawlor Events Center.

Nevada defeated the Spartans by a decisive score of 67-40 in the first meeting between the two teams earlier this season. 

In the first game, Nevada was outstanding on defense, holding SJSU to just 40 points on an embarrassing 33.3 percent field goal percentage and 25% from behind the arc. 

The Pack had allowed the fewest points in a game since 2008, when they gave up 40 against Nevada. 

Nevada also went on their biggest run of the season in the game, going on an incredible 25-0 run in the last 9:41 of the first half, which helped the Pack defeat the Spartans in a close game.

In the first game against San José State, Nevada had eight players score at least three points, led by redshirt freshman Nick Davidson, who had one of his best performances ever. Davidson pulled down a career-high nine rebounds in addition to scoring a game-high 15 points on 6-12 shooting from the field and 2-5 from behind the arc. In a career-high 27 minutes of action, he posted a plus/minus of +36, a game-high. 

In the first game against the Spartans, Jarod Lucas and Kenan Blackshear also scored in the double digits, scoring 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Nevada outrebounded San José State 42-31 on the glass, forcing the Spartans into 20 turnovers, and Nevada also dominated the glass. Nevada put on an outstanding performance overall, outscoring San José State 36-16 in the paint.

Last Time Out The Pack will enter the second game against the Spartans having lost to Utah State by nine points.

Will Baker scored 25 points for the Pack against the Aggies on 7-13 shooting, 6-8 from behind the arc, and 5-6 from the free throw line. Baker set a new career high by making six 3-pointers. The redshirt junior scored 22 points in a row over the first 4:53 of the game, going 7-7 from the field and 6-6 from behind the arc. He had an incredible start to the game. 

Baker now ranks third in the Mountain West in field goal percentage (56.4%), fourth in free throw percentage (83.9%), and 12th in points per game (14.0 PPG) following his outstanding offensive performance.

This season, Baker has played flawlessly at home, scoring 17.7 points per game on 68.1 percent shooting from the field and 40 percent shooting from behind the arc in 12 home games for the Pack. He also averages 5.6 boards per game.

In the game against Utah State, Kenan Blackshear also scored in double figures with 14 points and a team-high six assists. Blackshear has now scored in the double digits in 18 consecutive games and has tossed at least three assists in seven consecutive games and in 25 of the 27 games this season.

In a wide range of distinct statistical categories, Blackshear maintains its position among the top 15 schools in the Mountain West. He currently ranks second in the conference for assists per game (4.8 APG), sixth for steals per game (1.6 SPG), eighth for points per game (14.8 PPG), eighth for field goal percentage (45.6%), and 10th for free throw percentage (78.5%).

At Utah State, Jarod Lucas’ streak of 25 games in which he reached double figures came to an end. He still leads the conference in a number of offensive statistical categories this season, though.

Lucas is second in the league for made 3-pointers (71), free throw percentage (85.9%), points per game (17.3 PPG), 3-point field goal percentage (39.7%), and field goal percentage (41.1%).

Darrion Williams, a freshman, put on another impressive all-around performance against Utah State. He scored nine points on 4-7 shooting from the field and 1-3 from behind the arc. He also grabbed 11 rebounds, which was a game-high, and added two blocks. Williams has now overshadowed twofold figures in bouncing back in nine games for the Pack this season, and he has driven Nevada in bouncing back in 14 challenges this year. 

Williams is currently fifth in the league in rebounds per game, averaging 7.3 per game, and he continues to rank near the top of the conference in rebounding this season. Williams also has the ninth-highest average of 1.4 steals per game in the league. 

Nevada held Utah State, one of the nation’s best 3-point shooting teams, to just 25% from behind the arc throughout the game, despite losing to the Aggies. Nevada also put together a strong defensive effort. 

This season, the Pack’s defense is still among the top five in many categories in the Mountain West. Nevada is second in the conference when it comes to opponent field goal percentage (42.0 percent), fourth when it comes to opponent points per game (66.8 PPG), fourth when it comes to forced turnovers (345), fourth when it comes to defensive rebounding (26.2 per game), fifth when it comes to opponent 3-point field goal percentage (32.9 percent), and fifth when it comes to steals per game (6.0 SPG).

Nevada will attempt to achieve a perfect record at home for the entire season for just the third time in the program’s history on Tuesday night, defeating a talented and deep San Jose State team to move to 14-0 at Lawlor Events Center and earn their 21st victory of the season.

Scouting San José State: San José State has a record of 16-11 overall and 7-7 in Mountain West play heading into Tuesday’s matchup. 

The Spartans have been faultless on the glass this season, as they lead the gathering in consolidated group bounce back (37.7 RPG) and hostile bouncing back, pulling down 11.9 hostile sheets per game. 

This season, San José State has performed admirably on the defensive side of the court. They are sixth in the Mountain West in terms of opponent points per game (67.3 PPG), fourth in terms of opponent 3-point field goal percentage (34.9%), and sixth overall.

Omari Moore, one of the best players in the Mountain West, is in charge of San José State on an individual level. In terms of assists per game, Moore is first in the conference with 4.9 APG and fourth in the league with 17.0 PPG. This season, he has made 43.5 percent of his attempts at field goals and 34.3 percent of his attempts at 3-pointers. Moore has scored more than 20 points in ten games this year and led SJSU in scoring in 16 games.

The Spartans have had contributions from a wide range of players this season, with seven different players averaging at least 5.6 points per game. This is in addition to Moore. 

If Nevada wants to get back into the win column and keep their perfect record at the Lawlor Events Center this season, they will need to keep the Spartans off the offensive glass and put on another outstanding defensive performance against San José State, which is athletic and powerful.

ANAHEIM DUCKS NOTES
TONIGHT’S GAME: The Anaheim Ducks continue a four-game road trip and close out a back-to-back matchup tonight against the Tampa Bay Lightning at Amalie Arena (4 p.m. PT, TV: Bally Sports SoCal AUDIO: Ducks Stream). Anaheim enters today’s game with a 4-3-3 last 10 road games and 6-4-3 last 13 contests away from home. The Ducks have also earned points in seven of their last 10 games overall (4-4-2) in addition to a 5-5-2 record the last 12 contests. The Ducks close their eighth set of back-to-back contests this season, posting a 2-9-4 record overall, earning points in four of the seven first half contests (1-6-1). * Connor Hellebuyck and John Gibson both made 50 or more saves Monday, marking just the third time since 1955-56 (when shots on goal were officially tracked) that two goaltenders have posted as many on the same day.

* Tuesday’s nine-game slate will feature a showdown between the Sabres and Maple Leafs at KeyBank Center on Hulu and ESPN+.

PASTRNAK SCORES TWICE, RECORDS THIRD CAREER 40-GOAL SEASON
David Pastrnak (2-0—2) scored his 49th career game winner to reach the 40-goal mark for the third time in his career and for the second straight season as the League-leading Bruins (43-8-5, 91 points) matched the 1979-80 Flyers (56 GP) for the NHL record for fewest contests to 90 points in a campaign.

* Pastrnak (41) joined Connor McDavid (42) as the second player to reach the 40-goal plateau this season, further heating up the Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy race – he has already won it once before (2020).

* Pastrnak became the fifth player in Bruins history to register at least three 40-goal seasons with the club, following Phil Esposito (7x), Rick Middleton (5x), Cam Neely (4x) and Ken Hodge (3x). He also became the first Bruins skater to record consecutive 40-goal seasons sinceNeely more than 30 years ago.
 



GOALTENDERS ACHIEVE NOTABLE FEATS MONDAY
Monday saw a trio of goaltenders each put up impressive performances en route to achieving notable feats:

* Samuel Ersson (6-0-0) made 32 saves to become the 11th goaltender in League history to start his career with wins in each of his first six-plus decisions – a feat only one other Flyers netminder accomplished: Bob Froese (8-0-0 in 1982-83).

* Connor Hellebuyck made 50 saves to help Winnipeg snap New York’s 10-game point streak, marking the second-most saves in a contest in his career (51 saves on Nov. 1, 2019 at SJS). He also tied for the fourth-most saves in a game in Jets/Thrashers history.


* John Gibson made 51 saves to help Anaheim earn a point and tied the third-most saves in a single game in Ducks history – two shy of the franchise record, a mark he established just 10 days ago (53 saves on Feb. 10). Gibson became the third goaltender on record to post multiple 50-save games in a single month, joining Gump Worsley (3x in January 1963) and Al Rollins (2x in October 1955).

* Morrissey recorded his ninth multi-assist game of 2022-23 and tied Jacob Trouba (2018-19) for the second most by a Jets/Thrashers defenseman in a season. Morrissey boosted his 2022-23 totals to 11-47—58 (57 GP), surpassing Dustin Byfuglien (2013-14: 20-36—56 in 78 GP) for the most points in a season by a blueliner in franchise history.

MAPLE LEAFS VISIT SABRES ON HULU, ESPN+

Tuesday’s nine-game slate will feature the “Battle of the QEW” on HULU and ESPN+ when the Maple Leafs (34-15-8, 76 points) visit the Sabres (28-22-4, 60 points) at KeyBank Center. Buffalo will look to move within two points of a Wild Card position.
 

* John Tavares leads the Maple Leafs’ active roster in points against the Sabres with 23-23—46 (39 GP) – tied for his third-highest total against a single opponent – including 1-2—3 in Toronto’s first game against Buffalo in 2022-23 (Nov. 19, 2022). Tavares’ 1.18 points-per-game average against the Sabres sits fourth among active players (min. 25 GP), behind Sidney Crosby (1.43 P/GP), Evgeni Malkin (1.32 P/GP) and Nikita Kucherov (1.27 P/GP).

Stützle, MacKinnon and Larkin Named NHL ‘Three Stars’ of the Week

NEW YORK – Ottawa Senators left wing Tim Stützle, Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon and Detroit Red Wings center Dylan Larkin have been named the NHL’s “Three Stars” for the week ending Feb. 19.

FIRST STAR – TIM STÜTZLE, LW, OTTAWA SENATORS

Stützle led the NHL with 4-6—10 and two game-winning goals in four contests to power the Senators (27-24-4, 58 points) to seven out of eight possible standings points (3-0-1). He factored on Ottawa’s first six goals of the week, matching a personal high with 1-3—4 (highlighted by his second career overtime goal) in a 4-3 victory against the Calgary Flames Feb. 13 and posting 1-1—2 (as well as a shootout goal) in a 3-2 triumph over the New York Islanders Feb. 14. Stützle then added one assist in a 4-3 overtime loss to the Chicago Blackhawks Feb. 17 before closing the week with 2-1—3 (including his ninth career game-winning goal and third of 2022-23) in a 7-2 victory against the St. Louis Blues Feb. 19. The 21-year-old Stützle, who is playing in his third season after being selected third overall in the 2020 NHL Draft, paces the Senators with 26 goals and sits second on the team with 59 points – both career highs – through 51 total appearances in 2022-23 (26-33—59).

SECOND STAR – NATHAN MacKINNON, C, COLORADO AVALANCHE

MacKinnon ranked second in the NHL with 3-6—9 across four games – all multi-point efforts – to also propel the Avalanche (31-19-5, 67 points) to a 3-0-1 week. He collected 1-1—2 in each of his first two outings, a 4-3 shootout loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning Feb. 14 and a 3-2 victory (featuring the game-winning goal) over the Minnesota Wild Feb. 15. MacKinnon then assisted on two goals in a 4-1 triumph against the St. Louis Blues Feb. 18 and registered 1-2—3 (his seventh three-point performance of the season) in a 6-5 overtime win versus the Edmonton Oilers Feb. 19. The 27-year-old MacKinnon, the No. 1 overall pick from the 2013 NHL Draft, places 14th in the League with 19-48—67 overall this season despite missing 11 contests (44 GP). His 2022-23 average of 1.52 points per game ranks second in the NHL, behind only Connor McDavid (1.79).

THIRD STAR – DYLAN LARKIN, C, DETROIT RED WINGS

Larkin recorded 4-4—8 in four appearances to guide the Red Wings (26-21-8, 60 points) to a 3‑1‑0 week. He scored twice, including his fourth game-winning goal of the season, in a 6-1 triumph over the Vancouver Canucks Feb. 13 before posting 1-1—2 in a 5-4 shootout win versus the Edmonton Oilers Feb. 15. Larkin then matched a career high with three assists (last achieved Feb. 12, 2022 vs. PHI) in a 5-2 victory against the Calgary Flames Feb. 16. He finished the week with one of Detroit’s two goals in a 4-2 loss to the Seattle Kraken Feb. 18. The 26-year-old Larkin, the 15th overall selection from the 2014 NHL Draft, leads the Red Wings in goals (22), assists (34) and points (56) – as well as power-play goals (11) and power-play points (21) – through 54 total games this season.
