NBA Preview: Utah Jazz (31-35) at Orlando Magic (27-39)

0

Continuing their six-game road trip, the struggling Utah Jazz will play the Orlando Magic on Thursday night in an effort to salvage their playoff chances.

With a 120-116 defeat in Dallas on Tuesday, Utah dropped its fourth consecutive decision and fell to 0-3 on its crucial road trip. Lauri Markkanen had 33 points in his ninth game in a row with at least 20 points, but the Jazz were unable to recover from the Mavericks’ 8-0 run with less than three minutes left in the game.

Following consecutive defeats in Oklahoma City to begin Utah’s six-game run, the team suffered a home defeat on Feb. 28 to pathetic San Antonio. One of three games during the current skid in which the Jazz failed to reach their season average of 117 points per game, the game against the Spurs saw them score just 94 points.

Despite the absence of leading scorer Markkanen (25.3 points per game), Utah only exceeded its average during this stretch in the loss to Oklahoma City on Sunday.

The Minnesota Timberwolves, Los Angeles Clippers and Lakers, New Orleans Pelicans, Thunder, and Portland Trail Blazers are among the teams competing for the four play-in spots in the Western Conference as a result of Utah’s tailspin. On Wednesday, the seven teams were separated by 2.5 games.

In addition, Orlando enters the Eastern Conference without a playoff team. Through Tuesday, the Magic were 4.5 games behind Washington, which is currently in the 10th spot and the last play-in bid.

The four-game homestand continues for Orlando. The Magic lost the first two games, losing 134-123 to the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday and 122-119 to Portland on Sunday.

Orlando has lost three of its last four games and has given up at least 122 points in all three of them, eight more than its season average of 114 points per game.

Utah’s efforts to reorganize offensively meet Orlando’s desire for greater defensive consistency. The Jazz’s scoring offense ranks seventh in the league heading into Thursday’s matchup.

The Jazz defeated the Jazz 112-108 in Salt Lake City on January 13 thanks to 28 points from Markkanen. He also helped secure the victory over the Magic by blocking a last-second attempt by Franz Wagner to score three points. Wagner scored 26 points for the Magic, while Paolo Banchero and Wendell Carter Jr. scored 19 points each.

NBA Preview: Houston Rockets (15-50) at Indiana Pacers (29-37)

0

The Indiana Pacers’ recent offensive prowess is not reflected in the season-long statistics, especially since the season resumed last month following the All-Star break.

Indiana’s overall offense is average, as evidenced by its 18th-place offensive rating prior to Tuesday’s NBA schedule. However, the Pacers have scored an average of 125 points per game in their six games since the All-Star break, ranking fourth in the NBA behind only the Sacramento Kings, Los Angeles Clippers, and Dallas Mavericks.

Over the past two weeks, the Indiana Pacers, who play Houston Rockets on Thursday in Indianapolis, have excelled offensively for a myriad of reasons. However, the most obvious is Tyrese Haliburton’s play, who is making his first All-Star team and has somehow increased his stardom since the break.

Since the All-Star Game, Haliburton has been averaging 27.6 points and 12.2 assists on 57.1 percent shooting. He matched a season-high 16 helps with 40 places in a wild 147-143 misfortune to the Philadelphia 76ers on Monday in what was one of the most mind-blowing rounds of his profession.

Pacers mentor Rick Carlisle praised the presentation of his group against the 76ers, yet any affirmation of how well Indiana is playing on offense begins with Haliburton.

The Rockets can only hope that Jalen Green, a guard in his second season, makes progress similar to Haliburton’s in his third NBA season. Green’s inconsistencies are understandable since he turned 21 last month.

In a 25-point performance against the Brooklyn Nets on Tuesday, Green missed 6 of 7 3-point attempts and shot 42.9 percent overall after scoring 31 points on 11 of 19 attempts in a 142-110 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on Sunday. He hasn’t shot something like 50% in that frame of mind back games since late December when he arrived at the midpoint of 26 focuses on 54.1 percent shooting against the Bulls and Celtics.

Green is not solely responsible for the inconsistencies that exist. As of Tuesday, the Rockets had the lowest 3-point percentage in the NBA, at 32.7 percent. Their inability to even pose a threat to their opponents from beyond the arc frequently clogs the paint for Green, whose prolific ability to penetrate is hampered by opposing traffic.

Green would be able to do what he does best at this early stage of his career if he could shoot from the perimeter better. Green will continue to have nights when it is difficult to convert shots against defenses designed to obscure his view of the rim until the Rockets discover it.

NBA Preview: Charlotte Hornets (21-46) at Detroit Pistons (15-51)

0

On Tuesday, the Detroit Pistons almost made up for the absence of numerous starters and second-team players. Their ninth consecutive loss was the final outcome.

They’ll hope to end the slide when they have the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday night.

Their home game against Washington was tied in the last moment, however the Cylinders permitted two exorbitant hostile bounce back and the Wizards won 119-117 on Daniel Gafford’s putback at the signal.

During the current skid, it was Detroit’s sixth loss by six or fewer points.

Bojan Bogdanovic (Achilles), Alec Burks (foot), Jalen Duren (ankle), Killian Hayes (hand), Hamidou Diallo (ankle), and Isaiah Stewart (hip) were among Detroit’s injured players. In November, franchise player Cade Cunningham suffered a shin injury that ended his season.

After spraining his ankle in Monday’s loss to Portland, Diallo will miss the remainder of the season.

With 26 points and 12 assists, rookie guard Jaden Ivey kept the Pistons in the game. James Wiseman scored 21 points after being acquired at the trade deadline last month.

On a 10-day contract, Eugene Omoruyi scored 15 points and grabbed six rebounds. 11 points were scored by R.J. Hampton, who signed with the team on February 23 after Orlando released him.

Detroit’s last victory came on February 10, when it beat San Antonio in double overtime. The Cylinders are 2-12 starting from the start of February, with the other triumph coming against the Hornets.

In that 118-112 win at home, Ivey scored 24 points. On February 27, the Hornets won 117-106 at home to avenge that defeat. That evening, Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball broke his right ankle.

Detroit holds a 2-1 lead over the season series overall.

On Tuesday, Charlotte ended a losing streak of three games and ended the New York Knicks’ winning streak of nine games. In the Hornets’ 112-105 victory, Kelly Oubre Jr. scored 27 points.

In the second half, Charlotte outscored the Knicks 62-39. Terry Rozier contributed 25 points and seven assists for the Hornets, and Gordon Hayward contributed 23 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists.

Charlotte had 12 turnovers to Charlotte’s 27 assists.

WNBA: Atlanta Dream Sign Lorela Cubaj to Training Camp Contract

The Atlanta Dream announced today that they have signed 6-4 forward Lorela Cubaj to a contract for training camp.

Cubaj, or coo-BYE, received the No. On draft night, the New York Liberty acquired the Seattle Storm’s 18th overall selection in the WNBA Draft. She played 8.0 minutes per game in 11 games for the Liberty, averaging 0.7 points and 2.1 rebounds.

After a successful five-year career at Georgia Tech, where she was named the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Year in her senior year in 2021, Cubaj returns to Atlanta for the first time this summer. She averaged a double-double of 10.1 points and 11.1 rebounds in her final season with the Yellow Jackets, making 41.9 percent of her field goal attempts (125-298).

Cubaj, who was born in Terni, Italy, has been a member of Umana Reyer Venezia this season. In 20 games, she has averaged 5.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 0.8 steals.

WNBA: Atlanta Dream Sign Cheyenne Parker to Contract Extension

The Atlanta Dream made the announcement today in Atlanta, Georgia, that the forward’s contract has been extended.

Head Coach Tanisha Wright stated, “To continue to have Cheyenne in a Dream uniform thrills me.” CP is driven to be the best she can be, not just for herself but for her teammates as well. She is accustomed to the hard work and dedication required to play at a high level, and during our first season together, she demonstrated such a strong desire to continue developing. I can’t wait to see the steps she takes to improve her game.

Parker has averaged 11.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.1 steals per game over her last two seasons with the Dream. Parker returned to the court for all 36 of Atlanta’s games in 2022, setting career-best records with 176 baskets, 163 defensive rebounds, 222 total rebounds, 71 assists, and 37 steals after missing the final half of the 2021 season to give birth to her daughter Naomi.

“I’m so honored to be a part of that,” Parker said, “I’m so excited about this extension, we’re building something special here in Atlanta.” Tanisha and the coaching staff will keep pushing me, and as a result, they will get the best out of me every time. It’s simple for me to fight hard for this staff because I respect them so much. All I know is that we will have a lot of fun.”

Parker had a career-high five double-doubles and three games in which he scored 20 points at the end of the 2022 season.

General Manager Dan Padover stated, “Last season Cheyenne showed her teammates and our staff how much pride she has in her game and playing for our team.” We are thrilled that Cheyenne will continue to bring that level of intensity and effort to the Dream every night when she takes the court. She has demonstrated that she is one of the best WNBA post players, and the thing that excites us the most is that we believe she has not yet reached her full potential eight years into her career.

Atlanta Dream Sign Allisha Gray to Contract Extension

The Atlanta Dream made the announcement today in Atlanta, Georgia, that they have extended the contract of Allisha Gray, their newly acquired guard.

“Having Allisha focused on our crew long haul is one more large move toward cementing our center for what was in store,” said Lead trainer Tanisha Wright. ” Gray will be a great ambassador for our organization off the court as well, and she will be an amazing addition to the court.”

Gray was traded to the Dream for the team’s 2023 No. earlier in the year to the Dallas Wings in exchange for a 2025 first round pick. In 2022, she had a career-best season with the Wings, averaging 13.3 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game. She now plays for the Dream.

Gray stated, “This is an amazing opportunity for me to call Atlanta home.” I haven’t even donned a Dream uniform yet, but this organization and its fan base have already been so welcoming to me. I’m excited to get started and grateful to be a part of what Tanisha and Dan are building here.

Gray, who was named WNBA Rookie of the Year in 2017, won a gold medal in the first Olympics 33 competition at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. She was named the 2021 USA B-ball 3×3 Competitor of the Year subsequent to aiding lead the USA to their gold decoration and is currently 27-3 all-time addressing USA five-in five and 3×3 public groups.

General Manager Dan Padover stated, “This is a big win for our franchise, just as we stated when we first acquired Allisha.” Allisha’s down justifies itself and she will assume a significant part in our interest to turning into a competitor. We and Allisha can now relax knowing that this is not a temporary stay and that we are all in this together.”

Gray, who attended Washington County High School in Sandersville, Ga., won the NCAA National Championship with the South Carolina Gamecocks in 2017 and is returning to the southeast for the first time in her career this summer.

MLS Preview: Atlanta United FC (1-0-1) at Charlotte FC (0-2-0)

0

Last season, Charlotte FC and Atlanta United FC played each other twice, with Atlanta winning by a score of 2-1 in March and Charlotte winning by a score of 1-0 in April. Adam Armour, who is currently recovering from an injury, is still on either of the two teams that scored the goals in the two games.

For the third time in the club’s history, Charlotte FC has lost three matches in a row dating back to the end of the previous season. After its first three-match losing streak (February-March 2022), Charlotte responded with three wins in four matches (L1), and after its second, it won three games in a row (August-September).

Atlanta United will play its first game on the road in 2023 after opening the season with a win and a draw at home. Last season, the Five Stripes only won one of their last 16 road games in all competitions (D5 L10), and they gave up multiple goals in 13 of those 16 games.

Only 38.9 percent of Atlanta United’s attempts (14/36) have been taken inside the box, the lowest percentage among teams that have played two games this season. Seventeen of Charlotte FC’s 21 shots this season (81.0 percent) have been attempted inside the box, the highest percentage in MLS.

Thiago Almada assisted on the only goal scored by Atlanta United against Toronto on Saturday after scoring both of the Five Stripes’ goals in the opening match. Almada has scored or assisted on seven of Atlanta’s last eight MLS goals since the end of last season, including four consecutive goals.

NWSL: Orlando Pride Signs 2023 NWSL Draft Pick Summer Yates

No. 39 overall pick inked to multi-year deal

ORLANDO, Fla. — The Orlando Pride has signed forward Summer Yates to a two-year contract through 2024, with an option in 2025, it was announced today. Yates was drafted by the Pride in the fourth round, No. 39 overall, in the 2023 NWSL Draft.

“Summer is a versatile, quality player who provides us the ability to play her in a few different positions. We’ve been very impressed with her play and are happy to sign her ahead of the season,” VP of Soccer Operations and General Manager Haley Carter said. “She is a hard worker who will create a multitude of problems for defenders with her nose for goal, distribution and finishing. We are excited to continue her development and for her to start her professional journey here in Orlando.”

“Playing professional soccer has always been a dream of mine and I am so grateful to be able to live out that dream here in Orlando,” Yates said. “This team and coaching staff is amazing, the amount of talent and experience they have has already allowed me to learn and grow so much on and off the field. I am honored to wear purple and I am ready to give it my all for this Club and our fans!”

Yates was drafted out of the University of Washington after appearing in 93 games, 86 of which were starts, scoring 27 goals along with 23 assists during her five-year collegiate career. Yates earned All-Pac 12 selections in four of her five years while with the Huskies along with United Soccer Coaches All-American Second Team honors, also landing on the All-Pacific Region Team twice.

In 2022, she led the Huskies with seven goals, six assists and 20 points, starting all 19 matches for the side. Her season was highlighted by bagging a brace in a 3-2 victory over the University of Utah as well as netting the tying goal on the road in the Apple Cup win over intrastate foe Washington State, the Huskies first win at Washington State since 1996.

On the international stage, Yates has appeared for the U.S. U-20 Women’s National Team, leading the side to the 2020 U20 Concacaf Championship.
