TODAY’S GAME
OILERS AT SABRES
• This is the second and final meeting between the Sabres and Oilers this season.

• Last meeting: Buffalo defeated Edmonton 4-2 in Edmonton on Oct. 18, 2022.

• The Sabres are 7-3-0 in their last 10 games against the Oilers; 6-3-1 at home.

• This is the 83rd game all-time between Buffalo and Edmonton; Buffalo has a 30-41-11 series record.

• The Sabres are 17-16-8 at home against the Oilers all-time.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW
• A win today would give the Sabres three straight home wins against the Oilers for the first time since they defeated Edmonton in three consecutive home contests from Feb. 15, 2007 to Jan. 3, 2012.

• A win today would also give Buffalo 33 wins on the season, one more than they earned in 82 games in 2021-22. Buffalo last earned 33 or more wins in 2018-19 (33).

• Rasmus Dahlin has totaled 15 points (1+14) in his last 15 games and is one assist away from becoming the first Sabres defenseman since Phil Housley in 1989-90 (60) to record 50 or more assists in a single season.

• With an assist, he would join Housley and John Van Boxmeer as the only defensemen in franchise history to reach 50 assists in a single season.

• Tage Thompson has recorded 32 points (16+16) in his last 28 games, including 13 points (7+6) in his last nine games.

• Thompson needs one goal in tonight’s game to become the first Sabres skater to record 43 or more goals in a season since Thomas Vanek (43) in 2006-07.

• In his last 40 games, Jeff Skinner has notched 48 points (21+27), including 12 points (6+6) in his last nine games.

• In his last nine games, Jack Quinn has recorded nine points (4+5).

• Casey Mittelstadt (3+8) has collected 11 points in his last 11 games and a point in tonight’s game would give him his third three-game point streak of 2022-23.

• In his last 11 games, Dylan Cozens has recorded 10 points (6+4).

BACK-TO-BACK
• Today’s game begins Buffalo’s 11th of 15 sets of back-to-back games this season, which will conclude with a road matchup against the New York Islanders tomorrow night. The Sabres are 5-4-1 in the first game of back-to-back sets and 3-6-1 in the second game so far this season. Buffalo’s point breakdown in back-to-back sets this season is: four points (3), three points (0), two points (2), one point (2) and zero points (3).

NHL Morning Skate – March 6, 2023

0

* Countrymen Jesperi Kotkaniemi and Teuvo Teravainen combined for eight points as the Hurricanes blanked the Lightning and maintained their two-point lead on the Devils atop the Metropolitan Division.

Timo Meier and Jonathan Quick made their debut for the Devils and Golden Knights, respectively, with the former opening the scoring within the first 10 minutes of the game and the latter making 25 saves to pick up a win.

* Three of the NHL’s five 40-goal scorers will be on the ice when the Oilers visit the Sabres on Hulu, ESPN+, Sportsnet and TVA Sports (7:30 p.m. ET). In other action Monday, the Senators – one of the League’s top teams since the All-Star break – will look to extend their winning streak in pursuit of a playoff spot.

KOTKANIEMI, TERAVAINEN COMBINE FOR EIGHT POINTS IN SHUTOUT WIN

The Metropolitan Division-leading Hurricanes (41-12-8, 90 points) received a career-high five points from Jesperi Kotkaniemi (1-4—5) and a hat trick from Teuvo Teravainen (3-0—3) en route to their largest margin of victory in a home shutout in nearly 14 years.

* As they await the arrival of another Finnish-born player in Jesse Puljujarvi, Kotkaniemi and Teravainen became the first NHL teammates from the nation to combine for at least eight points in a game since Dec. 7, 2019 when Teravainen and Sebastian Aho totaled 3-5—8 (also for CAR).

* Teravainen’s hat trick marked the seventh this season by a Hurricanes player, tied for the most in one season in club history – the other instance came in 1985-86 when the Whalers set the benchmark.

Frederik Andersen became the third Carolina goaltender to record a shutout in 2022-23, marking the first time in Hurricanes team history that three netminders have had a shutout in the same season. It is the third such instance in franchise history, following 1984-85 and 1995-96.

Shayne Gostisbehere continued his impressive start with the club by becoming the first defenseman in franchise history to score a power-play goal in each of his first two games with the club. Check out #NHLStats Live Updates for more notes on Gostisbehere.

OTHER NEW ADDITIONS HELP DEVILS, GOLDEN KNIGHTS GET VICTORIES
Shayne Gostisbehere wasn’t the only recent acquisition who helped a team get a win Sunday:

Timo Meier opened the scoring at 9:09 of the first period in his Devils debut. Dougie Hamilton (18-43—61 in 62 GP) had the primary assist on both the 1-0 goal and overtime winner and became the fifth defenseman in franchise history to record 60 points in a season – he required the fewest games among that cohort to reach the mark, eclipsing Scott Stevens (66 GP in 1993-94).

Ivan Barbashev buriedhis first two goals in a Golden Knights uniform and Jonathan Quick (25 saves) earned a win in his team debut as Vegas (38-19-6, 82 points) vaulted past idle Dallas (34-16-13, 81 points) to reclaim first place in the Western Conference. Barbashev (2-3—5 in 4 GP) has five points since joining the Golden Knights, which trails only Brandon Pirri (6-0—6 in 4 GP) and James Neal (6-0—6 in 4 GP) for the most by a player through their first four games with the franchise.

THREE 40+ GOAL SCORERS IN ACTION ON HULU, ESPN+, SPORTSNET & TVA SPORTS

With 40 days left in the 2022-23 regular season, 23 teams either hold a playoff spot or are within seven points of one – including the Oilers (34-22-8, 76 points) and Sabres (32-25-4, 68 points) who will square off in a broadcast that will air exclusively on Hulu and ESPN+ in the United States and on TVA Sports and Rogers Monday Night Hockey (Sportsnet) in Canada. The contest will feature three of the League’s top five point-getters in Connor McDavid (52-70—122), Leon Draisaitl (41-55—96) and Tage Thompson (42-40—82).

TOP PERFORMERS IN MONTH SINCE ALL-STAR BREAK

A look at some of the top performers since the regular season resumed following the All-Star break, exactly four weeks ago today:

* Edmonton’s Connor McDavid tops all players with 11-19—30 over that span, finding the score sheet in 13 of 14 games including nine multi-point showings. McDavid, who holds a 26-point lead in the Art Ross Trophy race, has more points since the All-Star break than 77% of the League’s players have all season.

* Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon scored his 12th goal over that span in the Avalanche’s overtime loss Sunday, tying Minnesota’s Kirill Kaprizov and Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl for the League lead.

* Minnesota’s Filip Gustavsson tops the NHL in save percentage (.952) over that span (min. 5 GP) as he has posted a 6-1-2 record to help the Wild (36-21-6, 78 points) narrow the gap from eight to three points as they pursue the No. 1 seed in the Central Division.

* Boston’s Linus Ullmark (6-0-0) and Ottawa’s Mads Sogaard (4-0-1) are the only netminders with a minimum of four appearances since the All-Star break who have yet to post a regulation loss over that span.

* The Bruins, Devils, Golden Knights and Wild share the League lead with 20 standings points since the All-Star break, while Boston, Vegas, Los Angeles and New Jersey have the top four points percentages over that span.

* The Senators own an 8-3-1 record since the All-Star break and have the best points percentage over that span by a club not currently in a playoff position. Now holding a 32-26-4 record (68 points), Ottawa entered the All-Star break six points back of a Wild Card spot but have narrowed that gap to three points as they head to Chicago riding its longest winning streak since 2016-17 – the last time they qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

NBA Preview: New Orleans Pelicans (31-33) at Sacramento Kings (37-26)

0

When the New Orleans Pelicans conclude their three-game Western Conference trip with a game against the Sacramento Kings on Monday night, they will attempt to repeat recent history.

The first two games of the trip have been split, with New Orleans winning 121-110 at Portland on Wednesday and losing 108-99 at Golden State on Friday.

Meanwhile, Sacramento’s five-game winning streak came to an end on Saturday when they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves 138-134 at home.

Since their last meeting with the Pelicans, the Kings have not lost two games in a row. That was one month ago, on February 5, when the Kings defeated New Orleans by a score of 136-104 two days after losing to Indiana.

In that New Orleans victory, Trey Murphy III stunned the opponents by scoring 30 points and making six 3-pointers during a stretch in which the Pelicans won four of five games to maintain their position in the Western Conference playoff race.

Since then, they have lost five of their last six games, dropping two games below.500. On Wednesday, they will begin a four-game homestand against all Western playoff contenders.

In light of the fact that the Pelicans, who had the best record in the West at the middle of December, have dropped to the bottom of the pack in the Western race and Zion Williamson’s future remains uncertain due to a strained right hamstring, Brandon Ingram is aware that he must contribute to maintaining a positive outlook.

That is absolutely what Ingram has done. He has scored more than 30 points five times in his last 10 games, including a season-high 40 on Wednesday against Portland.

He and Sacramento’s De’Aaron Fox, who has essentially matched Ingram point for point in recent weeks, both missed the Kings’ trip to New Orleans last month.

The Rulers’ Top pick had gone for at least 30 places in eight straight appearances prior to adding up to 25 in Saturday’s misfortune to the Timberwolves. With 29 points, Kevin Huerter led the team in that game.

Coach Mike Brown has found himself reminding his team that the job is not done, despite the fact that Sacramento is currently in a rather comfortable position because they have seven fewer losses than the Pelicans.

With a record of 6-3 against all playoff contenders, the Kings have done well during a difficult stretch of the schedule. However, there are no lightweights in sight with the Milwaukee Bucks, Phoenix Suns, and New York Knicks following New Orleans.

The Pelicans and Kings are also scheduled to meet in New Orleans on April 4.

NBA Preview: Toronto Raptors (32-33) at Denver Nuggets (45-19)

0

The Eastern Conference playoff race is so tightly contested that a single game’s outcome can alter a team’s fortunes.

The Toronto Raptors, who are in the middle of the play-in bracket with 17 games remaining in the regular season, gained a significant advantage by defeating Washington on the road on Saturday, 116-109.

On a difficult five-game road trip that began with two games against the Wizards and ends with three games remaining, Toronto has won nine of its last 12 games. A trip to Denver to play the Nuggets on Monday night does not make the competition any easier.

The Raptors will face the best NBA home team with some insider knowledge. Will Barton, who was traded to Washington over the summer after seven seasons with Denver, was signed.

He signed with Toronto on Tuesday after being acquired by the Wizards and has only appeared in three games with his new team.

This season, the Raptors have struggled at home, but recently have performed better on the road. They won at Memphis last month and are 4-2 in their last six games.

Their most recent game required overtime, which is not good for their legs when playing in thin air and against a team that has only lost once at home since Dec. 6 and is trying to improve its grip on the Western Conference’s top seed.

The Nuggets are coming off a 113-97 victory over the Grizzlies, extending their lead over Memphis to six games, and have won three straight and seven of their last eight games.

Denver is excited to be the best team in the West, which means it will have home court advantage for the first three rounds. Since joining the NBA, the Nuggets have never reached the conference finals, and their 29-4 record at Ball Arena demonstrates how difficult they are to beat there.

On Friday night, the Grizzlies attempted physical contact with Denver to disrupt the high-scoring offense, but it did not slow them down; In response, the Nuggets only engaged in physical play.

It also helps when Nikola Jokic has a triple-double, which he has done in 25 games this year and in four of the last five games. When he reaches that point, Denver is unbeaten this year.

This year, Jokic is averaging a triple-double, putting him in the running to be named league MVP for the third year in a row.

Zeke Nnaji is the only rotation player who is not available, so the Nuggets are relatively healthy. He has a right shoulder injury, which the team said would be looked at again in two weeks.

NBA Preview: Atlanta Hawks (32-32) at Miami Heat (34-31)

0

Cody Zeller, a veteran center who stands 6 feet 11 inches tall and weighs 240 pounds, has recently found himself lost in the’shadows.’

Zeller, who was a Charlotte lottery pick, was waived twice in 2022 by Portland and Utah. However, Miami acquired him last month and he has helped the Heat out of the bench.

When the Miami Heat host the Atlanta Hawks for the second time in a row, it is anticipated that his role will be to play as a reserve once more on Monday night.

In Miami’s 117-109 victory over Atlanta on Saturday night, Zeller scored a season-high 13 points in 12 minutes.

Zeller is a member of the current Heat reserve team, which also includes Max Strus, Caleb Martin, and Victor Oladipo.

Zeller, 30, was selected fourth overall by the NBA in 2013 but hasn’t started a game since the 2020-21 season. Supporting Miami’s stars, Bam Adebayo, Tyler Herro, and Jimmy Butler, is now his responsibility.

On Saturday, Adebayo scored a game-high 30 points against Atlanta. He also had five assists and 11 rebounds.

Herro added 20 points on Saturday as well, and Butler had 15 points, 11 rebounds, and a team-high seven assists.

Kevin Love, the new Miami Heat power forward, has performed admirably in his six games since being acquired. However, he has only scored twice in the double digits for Miami.

So far this season, the Heat have won two out of three games against Atlanta.

Meanwhile, in 39 games, Atlanta has scored at least 100 points.

The Hawks have nonetheless struggled with inconsistent play.

Dejounte Murray, for instance, scored a career-high 41 points on 17-for-22 shooting in Friday’s game against Portland. On the other hand, he only managed 10 points on 3-of-14 shooting on Saturday against Miami. In Portland, he hit all five of his three-pointers, but in Miami, he missed all five of his long shots.

Trae Young, the Hawks’ superstar, is another example of inconsistent behavior. On Saturday against Miami, he was held to a season-low eight points on 2-for-13 shooting. That is a significant drop from his 26.7 season scoring average.

Young had an average of 22.1 points and 8.3 assists over his previous 15 games against Miami.

Positively, Saddiq Bey scored 22 points for the Hawks on Saturday. Since the Hawks acquired him on Feb. 9, it was his highest scoring game.

The Hawks’ record on the sidelines since hiring Quin Snyder as coach is 2-2.

NBA Preview: Portland Trail Blazers (30-34) at Detroit Pistons (15-49)

0

The Detroit Pistons begin a five-game homestand with a long losing streak.

Prior to their game against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night, the Detroit Pistons had lost seven straight.

On Saturday, Detroit was hammered by Cleveland by 114-90 and committed 24 turnovers. After falling nine points behind at the half, the Pistons were outscored 42-22 in the third quarter.

The fact that Casey’s starting five and rotation have been constantly changing due to injuries and roster additions and deletions has not helped matters.

Bojan Bogdanovic, the team’s leading scorer, missed Saturday because of a sore Achilles. Isaiah Stewart, power forward, and Jalen Duren, center, both missed time with injuries to their right hips, necessitating Casey’s creation of a brand-new frontcourt lineup. Watch Killian Hayes passed on the game in the second from last quarter because of a hand injury.

Marvin Bagley III, who led the Pistons with 20 points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks, was a bright spot. Since returning from a hand injury that kept him out for nearly two months, Bagley has been averaging 17.5 points and 13.0 rebounds in four games.

The Trail Blazers will play the third game of a six-game road trip and the tail end of a back-to-back. On Sunday, Portland defeated Orlando 122-119 to end a three-game losing streak.

Damian Lillard led the Trail Blazers with 41 points, his 14th game this season with 40 or more points. Over the past five games, he has scored 42.2 points on average.

In the final minute of the game against Orlando, Nassir Little hit the winning 3-pointer, and the Trail Blazers won the game with free throws.

Jerami Grant, a former Piston, scored 20, grabbed six rebounds, and provided seven assists. On Jan. 2, the Trail Blazers defeated the Pistons 135-106, and Grant scored 36 points in 28 minutes.

Portland played without starters Jusuf Nurkic (left calf strain) and Anfernee Simons (right lower leg sprain) on Sunday.

Billups will coach on Monday against the team he led to the 2004 and 2005 NBA Finals.

NBA Preview: Philadelphia Sixers (41-32) at Indiana Pacers (29-36)

0

The Philadelphia 76ers may be without two starters when they play the Indiana Pacers on Monday, despite winning what is widely considered to be their biggest game of the season.

After suffering injuries during Saturday’s dramatic 133-130 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, Tobias Harris (left calf soreness) and P.J. Tucker (back spasms) are unlikely to be available.

Milwaukee’s 16-game winning streak was snapped when Philadelphia came back from an 18-point deficit in the third quarter and scored 48 points in the fourth. James Harden finished with 38 points, 10 assists, and 9 rebounds, including 19 in the final period.

Tyrese Maxey had 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Georges Niang had 16 points. Joel Embiid had 31 points and 10 rebounds. In four consecutive games, Maxey has scored at least 23 points.

The Sixers, who had lost 106 games in a row when trailing by 14 or more points on the road going into the fourth quarter, could use the victory as a turning point.

Despite Philadelphia’s victory, Rivers wants to make sure his team remembers that it was only one game.

The final two games of the Sixers’ five-game road trip are against Indiana and the Minnesota Timberwolves. Indiana has won three of its last four, including a 125-122 triumph over the Chicago Bulls on Sunday.

After missing one game due to tightness in his right calf, Pacers point guard Tyrese Haliburton returned and scored 29 against Chicago, including the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.7 seconds remaining. With the victory, Indiana tied for 11th in the Eastern Conference.

Jordan Nwora, who was acquired from the Milwaukee Bucks a month ago, took Aaron Nesmith’s place in the starting lineup after he missed Sunday’s game with a sore left hip. In the win over Chicago, Nwora scored ten points and grabbed five rebounds.

Center Myles Turner, who scored 40 points in a loss to the Boston Celtics on February 23 to tie his career high, has also provided the Pacers with a boost over the past week. In January, Turner extended his contract with Indiana by two years and $60 million.
