GOLDEN KNIGHTS LAST GAME RECAP
March 9 – Vegas Golden Knights 4, Tampa Bay Lightning 3 OT
Alec Martinez scored at 3:09 of overtime to lift the Vegas Golden Knights (39-20-6) to a 4-3 victory against the Tampa Bay Lightning (38-21-6) on Thursday night at Amalie Arena. Vegas wasted little time getting on the board as Teddy Blueger set up Keegan Kolesar for the first goal of the game just 27 seconds in. Four minutes later, Brayden Point scored his 40th goal of the season to tie the game at 1-1. After a scoreless middle frame, William Karlsson potted a shorthanded goal to give Vegas a 2-1 lead early in the third period. Chandler Stephenson added to the advantage as he deflected a Shea Theodore shot past Andrei Vasilevskiy for a power-play goal. Nikita Kucherov scored with 2:07 to go and Point scored with less than 30 seconds to play to get the game to overtime. Three minutes into the extra session, Jack Eichel fired a shot that leaked through Vasilevskiy and Martinez knocked the loose puck home to lift Vegas to the 4-3 overtime victory.

Against the Hurricanes
The contest between the Golden Knights and the Hurricanes on Saturday is the second and final this season. The Golden Knights are 4-2-3 all-time against the Hurricanes and will look to secure their first win at PNC Arena since Jan. 31, 2020. LAST GAME
The Hurricanes posted a 1-0 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at PNC Arena on Thursday, extending their win streak to four games and earning their first 1-0 win on home ice since 4/4/21. Andrei Svechnikov scored the game’s only goal, with assists from Martin Necas and Brent Burns. Burns became the second player to play a game with Hartford/Carolina on his 38th birthday, while Jesperi Kotkaniemi skated in his 300th career NHL game. Pyotr Kochetkov stopped all 19 shots faced in net to register his team-high fourth shutout of the season in just his 20th appearance.

In their last three encounters with Toronto FC, Columbus Crew SC has prevailed 2-1. Before this run, Columbus had won just two of its previous 14 meetings with the Reds, including playoff games, from the beginning of 2016 to the present (D5 L7).

With a 1-1 draw at Atlanta on Saturday, Toronto FC ended a six-match losing streak that began last year. Since dropping five consecutive games at BMO Field in March-May 2012, the Reds have not lost three consecutive home games in all competitions. They lost their final two games at home last season.

Columbus defeated D. C. United 2-0 at home on Saturday to earn its first victory of the season. Following each of the club’s 10 victories in the previous season, the Crew played to a draw in 2022, going without a win for the entire season.

Federico Bernardeschi scored Toronto’s solitary objective in its 1-1 draw with Atlanta on Saturday, his subsequent straight game with an objective. Jozy Altidore scored in each of Toronto’s first four MLS games in 2019, despite missing the team’s first game that year. Only one player has scored in each of Toronto’s first three games.

In Saturday’s 2-0 victory over D.C. United, Lucas Zelarayan scored both goals on five attempts, while Cucho Hernandez took six shots. In the Crew’s first two matches this year, Zelarayan and Hernandez have made 17 of the 19 shots they have attempted (A. Matan and J. Russel-Rowe have made 1 each).

The Philadelphia Union have won all 11 of their home games against the Chicago Fire in all competitions (W8 D3), with Chicago’s most recent victory coming in Chester in August 2013. Since 2016, Philadelphia has won seven of its eight home games against the Fire, with Chicago’s only point coming in a 1-1 draw in 2021.

The Philadelphia Union have won 12 consecutive home games, including the playoffs, since June, the second-longest streak in MLS history. The San Jose Earthquakes were the only other team in MLS history to win 14 consecutive games at home, including playoffs, from August 2001 to July 2002.

The Chicago Fire’s season began with a 1-1 draw against New York City FC, marking the record-breaking 14th time in MLS history that the Fire have not won their season opener (D6 L8). Since 2013, Chicago has only won one of its first two games, a 2-0 victory over Real Salt Lake in its second match in 2017.

In Philadelphia Union’s first home game of the season against the Crew, Daniel Gazdag was responsible for all four goals (two goals and two assists). Gazdag has scored 21 goals (14 goals, 7 assists) in his last 11 games at Subaru Park, including playoffs, contributing to at least one goal in 10 of those 11 games.

In 2022, the Chicago Fire had a strong road season, winning five of its last seven away games (D2). The Fire had only won three of their 38 regular-season games away from home (D9 L26) and had lost seven of their previous eight games on the road (D1).

New York City FC has won six of its seven meetings with Inter Miami FC (L1), including the first-round 3-0 victory that knocked the Herons out of the playoffs last season. NYCFC has outscored Miami 7-0 in each of its three home matches against them.

The first two games of the season, both played on the road, netted New York City FC one point. NYCFC won 10 home games during the regular season, more than Los Angeles Football Club (13) and the Philadelphia Union (12). In all competitions, NYCFC has won 13 of its last 19 home games, including the last four (D4 L2).

For the first time in club history, Inter Miami FC has started the season with consecutive victories, keeping clean sheets in both games. In the history of the MLS, only two teams have begun a season with three consecutive shutout victories: Seattle Sounders in 2009 and the Los Angeles Galaxy in 2010 respectively.

In Saturday’s 0-0 draw with the Chicago Fire, Brazilian Gabriel Pereira scored New York City FC’s first goal of 2023, continuing the trend of the team’s attack being influenced by South America. South Americans have scored 44 of the team’s 45 MLS goals (not including own goals) since mid-May of last year, including the last 19.

Even though Miami’s star acquisition Josef Martinez only attempted two shots in his first two games, neither of which was successful, the team is off to a strong start. In Martinez’s MLS career, this is only the third time he has failed to score in two consecutive starts—he did it in September 2018 and mid-May 2021.

BRINGING COMEBACK CATS BACK AS FLORIDA CONTINUES PLAYOFF PUSH
Trailing 2-0 midway through the third period, the Panthers scored twice in 29 seconds to tie the game before Eetu Luostarinen gave Florida its first lead of the night a few minutes later. A tying goal from the Blackhawks in the final minute of regulation set the stage for Brandon Montour to record his second career overtime winner as the Panthers (33-27-6, 72 points) moved within two points of the idle Penguins (32-22-10, 74 points) for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

* Montour recorded his fourth game winner of 2022-23 and tied the Panthers record for the most game-winning goals by a defenseman in a season, a mark that Aaron Ekblad hit three times (4 in 2017-18, 2015-16 & 2014-15). With an assist on the play, Aleksander Barkov recorded his 22nd career overtime point and matched Jonathan Huberdeau for the most in franchise history.

* The Panthers led the NHL in both third-period comeback wins (15) and multi-goal third-period comeback wins (4) in 2021-22.

BRUINS LOOK TO CLINCH PLAYOFF SPOT ON NATIONAL BROADCAST
A 15-game Saturday features a matinee doubleheader on ABC, ESPN+ and SN1, headlined by the NHL-leading Bruins (49-9-5, 103 points) who will look to become the fastest team in NHL history to reach 50 wins in a season and clinch a playoff spot when they clash with the Red Wings (29-26-9, 67 points) at TD Garden.



* Boston, which can clinch a playoff berth with a win against Detroit and pending results from other games, would secure its seventh consecutive trip to the Stanley Cup Playoffs and 76th playoff appearance – the second most in NHL history behind longtime rival Montreal (85).

* The Bruins can become just the third team to clinch a playoff spot in 64 or fewer contests in an 82-game schedule (since 1995-96) – a feat only the 1995-96 Red Wings (59 GP on Feb. 25, 1996) and 1998-99 Stars (63 GP on March 10, 1999) have achieved to date.

MAPLE LEAFS, OILERS CLASH ON HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA
Mitchell Marner and the Maple Leafs (39-17-8, 86 points) host Leon Draisaitl and the Oilers (36-22-8, 80 points) at Scotiabank Arena during the first game of a doubleheader nationally broadcast on CBC and Sportsnet.

* Draisaitl (41-56— 97 in 64 GP) can become just the fifth player born outside of North America to record four-plus 100-point seasons – he would join Peter Stastny (7x), Jari Kurri (6x), Jaromir Jagr (5x) and Alex Ovechkin (4x).

Due to an ankle injury, Kevin Durant’s much-anticipated home debut on Wednesday was postponed, and the Phoenix Suns’ midseason acquisition will be out for the remainder of the month.

That leaves Durant watching from the sideline when the Suns have the Sacramento Lords on Saturday in a Western Gathering confrontation.

Durant will be re-evaluated in three weeks, according to the Suns’ announcement on Thursday, and there is speculation that he may miss the remainder of the regular season. The Phoenix Suns face the Los Angeles Clippers on April 9.

Durant shot 69 percent (29 of 42) from the field in his first three games with the Suns, all of which were played on the road, and averaged 26.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.7 assists per game.

Durant’s departure comes at a time when Phoenix is playing well, winning 16 of their last 21 games and four in a row. However, as they prepare for a run to the postseason, the Suns were still hoping to become completely at ease with Durant on the court.

Without Kevin Durant, the Phoenix Suns dominated the Oklahoma City Thunder 132-101 on Wednesday. However, coach Monty Williams observed that Durant’s face lacked joy.

Devin Booker, a star guard, has scored at least 35 points in four games in a row, shooting 17-for-23 from the field to score 44 points. During this stretch, he is scoring 38 points on average.

The Suns (37-29) have moved up to fourth in the West, but they still want to be the No. 2 seed. Sacramento (39-26) and Memphis Grizzlies share that position going into Friday.

Following their 122-117 victory over the visiting New York Knicks on Thursday, the Kings have now won seven of their last eight games.

Domantas Sabonis matched his league-leading 53 double-doubles with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and 10 assists for his ninth triple-double of the season. In the final period, fellow All-Star De’Aaron Fox scored 15 of his 23 points.

Against the Suns, Sacramento coach Mike Brown will closely monitor one aspect. He was unhappy with the Knicks’ 58-42 rebounding advantage and 23-6 offensive boards advantage.

The longest current playoff drought among the four major professional sports is 16 seasons, and Sacramento is well on its way to ending it. The Kings are just three wins away from securing their first winning season since 2005-06, which was also the season in which they made their last appearance in the postseason.

Booker scored 38 points per game earlier this season as Phoenix defeated Sacramento twice.
