WNBA Preview: Connecticut Sun (2-0) at Washington Mystics (1-1)

Stephanie White, the new coach of the Connecticut Sun, didn’t have to wait long for information about her team to be confirmed.

When the teams finish their home-and-home series on Tuesday night, Connecticut will have another chance to show that it is tough when it travels to Washington, D.C.

The Sun got off to a slow start against the Mystics, trailing 24-14 after one quarter, despite having won the season opener by a score of 70-61 at Indiana. However, they gradually drew Washington in, reducing the lead to four at halftime and one point after three quarters before taking over in the final ten minutes.

Connecticut was led by 21 points from DeWanna Bonner. Alyssa Thomas contributed 14 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists, while Brionna Jones had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas has been a detail sheet stuffer in the initial two games, averaging 16 focuses, 13.5 bounce back and six helps.

Washington almost followed up its great 80-64 triumph over WNBA Finals most loved New York with a decent street win. However, the Spiritualists turned cold after an extraordinary first quarter, when they shot 47.1 percent from the field, to complete the game at 39.1 percent.

Shakira Austin (21 focuses, 11 bounce back) and Elena Delle Donne (19 focuses, 11 bounce back) each gathered twofold pairs for Washington. Natasha Cloud contributed 13 focuses and six helps.

Delle Donne is pacing a decent assault through two games with 16 places and 7.5 bounce back per game. Cloud and Austin each are scoring 13.5 focuses per game.

Minneapolis, MN – The National Football League announced that Super Bowl LX will be hosted in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2026, with the game played at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara.

The announcement was made today at the NFL Spring League Meeting in Minneapolis, following a review of the proposal by the Fan Engagement & Major Events Advisory Committee and a vote by full ownership.

“The Bay Area was an incredible host for Super Bowl 50, and we are thrilled to bring the Super Bowl back,” said NFL Commissioner ROGER GOODELL. “We look forward to working with the 49ers and the Bay Area Host Committee to create an impactful Super Bowl LX in 2026 that showcases all the great things the region has to offer.”

Super Bowl LX comes exactly 10 years after Levi’s Stadium hosted Super Bowl 50 in 2016 and will be the second played in the stadium since opening in 2014. According to an independent study, Super Bowl 50 generated almost $250 million for the Bay Area economy

“We are honored to host the Super Bowl at Levi’s Stadium once again, and to be stewards of one of the biggest sporting events in the world,” said AL GUIDO, President of the San Francisco 49ers. “Since hosting Super Bowl 50 in 2016, Levi’s Stadium has cemented its reputation as a world-class venue. I’m confident Super Bowl LX will be a terrific event that benefits the entire community.”

As part of Super Bowl LX activities, the Bay Area will host a highly anticipated slate of events that make up Super Bowl Week, including NFL Honors, Super Bowl Experience, Super Bowl Opening Night, and a robust community program. The events are expected to take place across the Bay Area, with limitless opportunities for visitors and residents to have memorable experiences leading up to the game.

“The Bay Area is an exciting region for sports and is the perfect host for Super Bowl LX,” said ZAILEEN JANMOHAMED, President and CEO of the Bay Area Host Committee. “2026 will be a blockbuster year for the Bay Area on the world stage as it hosts both the Super Bowl and World Cup – and it’s fitting timing as San Francisco celebrates its 250th birthday. We are thrilled to bring another large-scale event to the area, and to showcase the Bay Area’s unique spirit and diversity.”

0

NFL clubs adopted the below resolution proposal today at the Spring League Meeting in Minnesota.

2023 RESOLUTION JC-6

Whereas, in 2023 Resolution JC-2 (as Amended) the membership approved a modified scheduling policy for short weeks in connection with the Thursday Night Football package; and

Whereas, given that Thursday Night Football is the only primetime package without flexible scheduling, the membership also wishes to apply flexible scheduling and/or “TBD” scheduling for Thursday Night Football on a trial basis; Be it

Resolved, that flexible scheduling is hereby expanded to Thursdays such that clubs may be required to switch Sunday afternoon regular season games, in Weeks 13-17, to approximately 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday (and vice-versa) upon at least twenty-eight (28) days’ notice from the League Office; and Be it

Further Resolved, that the League’s late season “TBD” scheduling mechanism is hereby expanded to allow the League Office to designate games originally identified as “TBD” games to be played at approximately 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday (in addition to Saturday, Sunday or Monday) in place of the originally scheduled Thursday night game (which shall be played on Sunday); and Be it

Further Resolved, that any club appearance on Thursday Night Football as a result of flexing or “TBD” scheduling will count toward the existing seven (7) appearance limit (as described in Section 4 of Exhibit A of 2021 Resolution M-1); and Be it

Further Resolved, that no club will be required by virtue of flexible scheduling to switch from Sunday afternoon to Thursday night on more than one (1) occasion, or to play more than two (2) games on Thursday night in total, in any season; and Be it

Further Resolved, that the League Office will apply flexible scheduling to Thursday Night Football no more than two (2) times in any season; and Be it

Further Resolved, that this Resolution will be in effect for the 2023 season only, unless flexible scheduling is not applied for Thursday Night Football during the 2023 regular season, in which case this Resolution shall remain in effect for the 2024 season.

Submitted by:  Media and Media O&O Committees

Reason and Effect:  To permit a one-season trial of modified scheduling policies for flexible scheduling in connection with the Thursday Night Football package.

2023 Bylaw Proposal 1A Approved at Spring League Meeting

0

NFL clubs adopted the below bylaw proposal today at the Spring League Meeting in Minnesota:

2023 BYLAW PROPOSAL 1A

Amend Article XVII, Section 17.3 of the Constitution and Bylaws, to reflect the following (new language underlined; deleted language struck through):

Active/Inactive Lists

17.3           One hour and 30 minutes prior to kickoff, each club is required to establish its 45-player Active List for the game by notifying the Referee of the players on its Inactive List for that game. Each club may also designate one emergency third quarterback from its 53-player Active/Inactive List (i.e., elevated players are not eligible for designation) who will be eligible to be activated during the game, if the club’s first two quarterbacks on its game day Active List are not able to participate in the game due to injury or disqualification (activation cannot be a result of a head coach’s in-game decision to remove a player from the game due to performance or conduct). If either of the injured quarterbacks is cleared by the medical staff to return to play, the emergency third quarterback must be removed from the game and is not permitted to continue to play quarterback or any other position, but is eligible to return to the game to play quarterback if another emergency third quarterback situation arises.

A club is not eligible to use these procedures if it carries three quarterbacks on its game day Active List [47- or 48-players in 2023].

Each club may also identify one player on its Inactive List who may dress for the game, provided that (1) such player is a quarterback; (2) the club has two quarterbacks on its 45-player Active List; (3) if the third quarterback enters the game during the first three periods, he must replace one of the club’s other two quarterbacks, neither of whom may thereafter return to the game under any circumstances; and (4) if the third quarterback enters the game during the fourth period or any overtime period, he must replace one of the club’s other two quarterbacks, either of whom is permitted to return to the game.

[The remaining language of Section 17.3 is unchanged.]

Submitted by Competition Committee

Effect:       Permits each club to designate an emergency quarterback who can be activated from its Inactive List if the two quarterbacks on the club’s Active List are injured or disqualified and unable to participate in the game.

Reason:     Integrity of game.
