The New York Yankees acquired minor‑league catcher Omar Alfonzo and outfielder Luis Cruz from the Pittsburgh Pirates in a deal that sends veteran reliever Camilo Doval and cash considerations to Pittsburgh, the club announced Sunday.

Alfonzo Provides On‑Base Ability and Experience Across Three Levels

Alfonzo, 22, has split the 2026 season across three affiliates, batting .238/.337/.419 with 11 doubles, nine home runs, 35 RBI, and 30 walks in 62 games for Double‑A Altoona, the FCL Pirates, and Single‑A Bradenton. Over six minor‑league seasons in the Pirates system, the left‑handed hitter owns a .240/.360/.386 career line with 44 home runs, 198 RBI, and 242 walks in 420 games.

A native of Minneapolis, Alfonzo originally signed with Pittsburgh as a non‑drafted free agent in August 2019.

Cruz Brings Speed and Plate Discipline at Rookie Levels

Cruz, 18, has impressed in the Dominican Summer League, hitting .300/.463/.380 with 14 runs, eight RBI, 14 walks, and seven stolen bases across 18 games for the DSL Pirates Gold and DSL Pirates Black squads. In two seasons, he has posted a .260/.421/.333 line with 37 walks and 13 stolen bases in 57 games.

The Santo Domingo Este native signed with the Pirates as an international free agent in January 2025.

Doval Departs After Two Seasons in New York

Doval, 29, leaves the Yankees after posting a 3–1 record, one save, and a 4.54 ERA across 44 relief appearances this season. Since joining New York at the 2025 trade deadline, he has logged a 4.63 ERA over 58.1 innings.

Across six Major League seasons with San Francisco and New York, Doval has compiled a 29–20 record, 109 saves, and a 3.53 ERA in 341 appearances, striking out 393 batters in 326.1 innings. He was originally signed by the Giants as a non‑drafted free agent in 2015.

The trade adds two developing prospects to the Yankees’ system while giving Pittsburgh a proven late‑inning arm with extensive high‑leverage experience.
