New York Sirens acquire 3rd overall Draft Pick, select Casey O’Brien in trade with Toronto

OTTAWA, ON – The New York Sirens have selected forward Casey O’Brien with the 3rd overall pick in the first round of the 2025 Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) Draft presented by Upper Deck. The selection took place during the live draft proceedings at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Ottawa.

New York acquired the pick via trade with the Toronto Sceptres, sending veteran defender Ella Shelton in exchange. Shelton, who stands 5’10”, played two seasons with the Sirens, totaling 15 goals and 22 assists during her tenure.

O’Brien, 23, joins the Sirens following a record-setting collegiate career at the University of Wisconsin. A native of Milton, Massachusetts, she served as co-captain for the Badgers, earning accolades as a three-time National Champion, recipient of the Patty Kazmaier Memorial Award, and a First Team All-American. In 2024–25, she led the NCAA in scoring with 88 points (26 goals, 62 assists) over 41 games, setting a new single-season program record. O’Brien graduates as Wisconsin’s all-time leading scorer with 274 points (97 goals, 177 assists) across 182 games, surpassing the previous mark held by Hilary Knight.

On the international stage, O’Brien has represented Team USA with distinction, capturing gold in 2018 and silver in 2019 at the IIHF U18 Women’s World Championship.
