“BORING” FOOTBALL: Prior to last weeks game vs. TEN (10/3), New York Jets Head Coach Robert Saleh was discussing rookie quarterback Zach Wilson’s progression in learning when to take the underneath throws and when to take shots down the field,  something he has termed “boring” football.

Last week vs. TEN (10/3), Wilson threw 18 of his 34 passes (52.9%) seven air yards or less, taking the underneath throws • While those plays accounted for just 24.9% of his passing yards and only 36.4% of his first downs passing, he completed 77.8% of them for a 102.3 passer rating and wasn’t hit in protection.

THE RETURN: Linebacker C.J. Mosley, who missed all but two games the last two seasons due to injury (2019) and opting out (2020), leads the team in tackles with 37, a top 10 total in the league this season • Additionally, Mosley has recorded 10+ tackles in each of his last three games, the first time he’s done so in his career, joining James Farrior, Jonathan Vilma, Sam Cowart, Avery Williamson, Dawan Landry, David Harris and Marvin Jones as the only Jets to do so since 2000. In run support, Mosley has contributed with 18 tackles coming after an average gain of 2.78 yards, the sixth best in the league this season.

YOUNG & EFFECTIVE: This season, the Jets defense has seen a league-high 1,029 snaps from rookies or second-year players, including 776 snaps from defensive backs, the most of any team in the league • Among the young Jets defenders with 100+ snaps on defense this season are: Bryce Hall (271), Michael Carter II (182), Bryce Huff (148), Javelin Guidry (147) and Brandin Echols (138).

BACKFIELD DISRUPTION: Following their 7.0 sack, 14 quarterback hit performance last week vs. TEN (10/3), the Jets defensed now ranks in the top five in the league in sacks (13.0) and tied for sixth in quarterback hits (27) • Additionally, the pass rush isn’t the only time the team has made play in the opposing backfield as a league-high 23 opposing carries have produced zero or negative yards this season.

Entering the season, the Jets starting defensive line of Folorunso Fatukasi, Bryce Huff, John Franklin-Myers and Quinnen Williams has played 101 career games between them and had totaled 19.5 career sacks • This season, the group – who have started every game – have already totaled 8.5 sacks (on pace for 34.0), while increasing their collective quarterback hit rate from approx. one QBH every two games (51 total in 101 career games) to averaging over one QBH per game this season (18 in 16 games played).
