Josh Hart, a swingman for the New York Knicks, arrived at his press conference following Saturday’s game wearing a T-shirt designed by Jalen Brunson.
However, perhaps Brunson and the remainder of the Knicks ought to have been donning Hart Shirts.
Now that Hart’s condition is uncertain due to a sprained ankle, the Knicks will play the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 of the best-of-seven series on Tuesday night in an effort to extend their lead in the Eastern Conference first round.
In the fourth quarter of Saturday night’s game, when the Knicks lost all of their 10-point lead but recovered to defeat the Cavaliers 101-97, Hart and Brunson each had big games.
Together, they scored 16 of the Knicks’ 23 points in the fourth quarter. They were especially effective in the last two minutes, when they scored the first seven points of the Knicks’ 9-4 run that won the game.
Jarrett Allen’s tip-in with 2:12 remaining gave the Cavaliers a 93-92 lead, which they maintained with nine straight points. When Donovan Mitchell missed a potential go-ahead three-pointer with 1:32 remaining after a timeout, Hart made a long 3-pointer and got the rebound.
After that, Brunson made a stepback jumper from the foul line to make it 97-93 in favor of the Knicks. Mitchell depleted a couple of free tosses, and Hart missed a long 2-pointer before Brunson changed over a floater.
Brunson procured the Shirt treatment by scoring 21 focuses in the last part in the wake of being restricted to nine minutes in light of foul difficulty in the main half. However, Hart’s rare bench double-double set the tone for New York, which outscored the Cavaliers’ reserves 37-14.
Hart had 17 focuses and 10 bounce back, the main Knicks save with a twofold in a season finisher game since J.R. Smith had 15 focuses and 10 bounce back against the Indiana Pacers on May 18, 2013.
However, Hart also suffered a left ankle sprain during the game and was limited in Monday’s practice. The Knicks recorded him as far fetched for Game 2 and Knicks mentor Tom Thibodeau said Hart’s status will rely heavily on how he feels Tuesday morning.
While primarily relying on Mitchell and Allen, the Cavaliers, who are in the playoffs without LeBron James for the first time since spring 1998, nearly won. Allen recorded a double-double in 43 minutes with 14 points and 14 rebounds, while Mitchell scored 38 points in 43:38 of play.
However, the Cavaliers were reminded by the complete nature of the Knicks’ victory and the urgency with which New York played the final minutes that they will likely need to put in a more balanced effort in order to win their first playoff series since James’ final season in charge in the spring of 2018.
Darius Garland of the Cavaliers, who played 43 minutes, joined Mitchell and Allen in playing at least 40 minutes on Saturday. Only Hart, Julius Randle, RJ Barrett, and Hart of the Knicks played more than 30 minutes. Forward Cedi Osman drove Cavaliers saves with nine places.
