MONTREAL — The Montreal Alouettes have announced a one-year contract extension for American defensive tackle Mustafa Johnson, securing his place with the team through the 2026 season. Johnson, who was already signed for 2025, has proven to be an invaluable member of the Alouettes’ defense.

Standing six feet tall and weighing 285 pounds, the Aurora, CO native delivered an impressive performance last season. Over the course of 15 games, Johnson racked up 35 defensive tackles, six sacks, one blocked kick, and four pass knockdowns. Since joining the team in 2022, he has solidified his reputation as a cornerstone of the Alouettes’ defensive unit and a premier defensive lineman in the CFL.

“Mustafa is one of the best players at his position, and we’re thrilled to have secured him for an additional year,” said Alouettes General Manager Danny Maciocia. “He’s a key piece of our defense and an important leader in the locker room. As he enters the prime of his career, we believe his game will continue to rise to new levels.”

A product of the University of Colorado, the 26-year-old Johnson has played 40 career games, recording 96 tackles, 15 quarterback sacks, and one touchdown. He has also contributed in five playoff games, including the Alouettes’ memorable Grey Cup victory over Winnipeg in 2023.

Johnson’s standout 2023 season earned him a spot on the East Division All-CFL team. He finished that season with 47 tackles and seven sacks across 18 games, highlighted by his first career touchdown—a fumble recovery he ran into the end zone in Edmonton on Oct. 14.
