MLS Preview: Vancouver Whitecaps FC (2-2-3) at Austin FC (2-3-1)

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC have won three of its first four meetings with Austin FC, including a 2-0 win in the last meeting in October. The Vancouver Whitecaps FC could become the second team to record four wins over Austin FC in MLS play, joining Los Angeles Football Club (5, including playoffs).

After winning consecutive matches in early March, Austin Fc has just one point from its last three matches, including a 3-0 defeat to the Los Angeles Football Club on Saturday. Austin FC has just one regular season losing streak since the beginning of June 2022, losing three in a row in August-September last year.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC are winless in 13 consecutive away matches in all competitions (D6 L7) following a 3-0 loss at Los Angeles Football Club in the Concacaf Champions of League on Tuesday. Vancouver has won only four of its last 47 away matches in all competitions, though two of those, including the most recent win, have come in Texas.

Maximiliano Urruti has scored a career-best nine goals in 21 career appearances against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC, finding the net against Vancouver for five different teams, including Austin FC. Urruti has scored at least once against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC in six of the last seven season dating back to 2016, only failing to do so in 2020.

Vancouver Whitecaps held the Portland Timbers to just two shots in its 1-0 victory Saturday, the fewest its ever held an opponent to in a match in the club’s MLS history. Portland did not attempt a shot in the first half, the second time in club history Vancouver has played a half without facing a shot (1st half vs San Jose Earthquakes in September 2014).
