MLS Preview: Vancouver Whitecaps FC (11-9-8) at Real Salt Lake (11-11-7)

Real Salt Lake has lost only two of its 14 home matches against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC (W8 D4), though the last meeting in Sandy, Utah ended in a 1-1 draw in August 2022.

Real Salt Lake has lost six of its last seven matches in all competitions (W1) after losing just three of its previous 24 games (W14 D7). Real Salt Lake has conceded 17 goals over its last seven matches, conceding at least three times in four of those games.

This will be the Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s sixth consecutive away match, having not played at home since August 20. The Vancouver Whitecaps FC had gone unbeaten in four straight to start this road trip (W3 D1) before a 4-1 loss at the Houston Dynamo FC on Wednesday, its first road defeat since July 1 in Kansas City.

Cristian Arango has scored in four straight matches for Real Salt Lake, the fifth player in club history to score in four straight matches. The only Real Salt Lake player to score in five straight regular-season matches is Damir Kreilach, who did so in September-October 021.

The Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s lone goal in its 4-1 loss to the Houston Dynamo FC came via an own goal from Houston dynamo FC defender Erik Sviatchenko. It was the fourth own goal scored for the Vancouver Whitecaps FC this season, the most of any MLS team in 2023 and the most in a single season in the Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s MLS history.
