Toronto beat Charlotte, 4-0, at home on July 23 in the first MLS meeting between the sides. The Reds have won all four regular season matches against expansion sides since 2019, though they lost to Nashville, 1-0 in the 2020 playoffs.

Charlotte FC has lost consecutive home games for the first time in club history following a 2-1 defeat to Orlando City on Sunday. Charlotte has conceded five goals in those two losses after allowing just seven goals in its first 11 home MLS matches.

Toronto FC’s five-match unbeaten run (W3 D2) came to an end on Saturday with a 2-1 loss at Miami. Prior to the five straight matches collecting at least one point, Toronto had avoided defeat just four times in its previous 14 league games (W2 D2 L10).

McKinze Gaines’ 66th-minute goal on Sunday came on the end of a 24-pass move for Charlotte. Only one goal in MLS this season had a longer pass sequence to it: a 25-pass move for another Charlotte goal, scored by Karol Swiderski on July 9.
