MLS Preview: St. Louis City SC (12-7-2) at Los Angeles Football Club (9-6-6)

The Los Angeles Football Club has won all six of its meetings against expansion teams, outscoring them, 14-1, in those games. An expansion team has defeated the defending MLS Cup champions only four times since 2010 (D5 L9), though two of those wins came last season (Charlotte FC over New York City FC).

Following a 1-1 draw with the San Jose Earthquakes over the weekend, the Los Angeles Football Club has just one win in its last seven home games in all competitions (D2 L4). Prior to this stretch, the Los Angeles Football Club had failed to win just four of its previous 22 matches at home (W18 D2 L2, including a penalty shoot-out win in the MLS Cup Final).

St. Louis City SC has won three straight matches, marking the team’s league winning streak of at least three games this season. In the post-shootout era (since 2000), St. Louis City SC is the first MLS expansion team with three different winning streaks of at least three games in their inaugural season.

Denis Bouanga both drew and converted a penalty kick against the San Jose Earthquakes. Bouanga is one of two MLS players with multiple PKs drawn and multiple PK goals scored in 2023, along with teammate Carlos Vela.

Aziel Jackson scored his first career MLS goal as the lone goalscorer in St. Louis City SC’s 1-0 win over Toronto FC on Saturday. Jackson is the 13th different goalscorer for St. Louis City SC this season in league play, toed for the most different players with a goal of any MLS team in 2023.
